Shame on you all for judging other cultures by our standards.....
You know, like freedom to keep (some percentage of) the wealth you produce, speech (absent speech that offends certain groups), thought (for now), religion (so long as the expression/practice of your beliefs does not offend certain groups)....
My Chinese medical student pointed out to me that the area of China where the NK refugees land is one of the poorest areas of China and hence they get little sympathy.
South Korea is also, or used to be, complicit in returning refugees because it fears the collapse of NK with a flood of refugees, sort of like what Europe is seeing now.
It's worth noting that the pundits of that era like Walter Lippmann thought that there was no functional difference between the North Koreans and our South Korean allies.......Perhaps in the fullness of time South Vietnam would have evolved into a far better place than North Vietnam. That's a concept beyond the imagination of most liberals. There are many mitigating factors in he Chavez story and nothing redeeming to be said about Pinochet.
Nothing redeeming about Pinochet? Really? Including stepping down peacefully and setting your country on the path to becoming the most prosperous on your continent? Remind me which leftist dictator has ever done either of those things?
I saw no evidence that South Koreans don't care about North Koreans, when I was there. Quite the opposite, many of them are close relatives. The Republic of Korea supports North Korean refugees almost any way they can. Of course they want to avoid the disruption that occurred in Germany when East Germany collapsed. Who wouldn't?
Comrades, let's not forget that the North Koreans are all equal. No one stands above another (well, perhaps excluding the Party leadership) and equality is the first, second and last policy for every state decision.

"If I had the things Americans throw away, I wouldn't have left North Korea."
Heck we are sooo smart we use our food to fuel our automobiles.
Not to worry, socialism will work this time!
And if we keep digging through all of those manure piles,we're bound to find a pony!
All they really would need, is the 2nd Amendment. The rest of the good things, follow.

A commenter on my blog asked what the point is of reading about this if there's nothing we can do. I'd just like to point out that there is something you can do: you can help my friend Peter Prosol raise the last $1,000 he needs to rescue another person from North Korean.

Nothing to envy
