"I even turned around to Bernie Sanders at one point and said, ‘Bernie, say my name, will you? Say my name.'"

"In that kind of environment, I was either going to be Mr. Angry or I was going to be a potted plant. That was the only way to try to get into the conversation," said Jim Webb, complaining about the "rigged" debate.

I love the "say my name" business. So "Breaking Bad"...

The Democrats could have had someone resembling a traditional statesmanlike presidential candidate with actual qualifications in Jim Webb, but that old political granny porn can be as intoxicating as it is intimidating, it seems. Still, I always wish those who get what they deserve good and hard the very best of luck with their choices.

How long has Mr. Webb been in politics??

In the first Fox debate, Trump spoke for just over 11 minutes total, which was more than any other R sharing the stage. Jim Webb, currently polling at 0.8%, spoke for well over 15 minutes last Tuesday night.

It makes sense for candidates to be able to respond when called out. In early R debates last cycle, candidates were given equal time, and this encouraged pig-piling the front runner. Plus, allowing response to attacks gives front runners proportionally more time, which they have frankly earned.

Personally, the whining about debate moderators is huge turn-off. If I was inclined to be charitable to Mr. Webb, however, I could point out that he is just aping the successful tactics of Donald.

His party has left him, but Jim hasn't figured it out yet.

As I wrote commenting on another thread, the day after the debate my wife glanced at Drudge and told me that Hillary had no gaffes, which means that she has to have had copies of the questions in advance. And here I thought I was the cynical one.

Five democrats. Ten Republicans. Re-do the math.

That "say my name" use was pre-planned.

I heard that when Bernie starts to talk about the email snafu and before he even gets very far, Hillary is nodding her head up and down in approval of what he is about to say.

If true, the fix is in.

Weird ... Webb's comment is sex talk. What people say when they're boinking.

Say my name makes me think of Beyoncé, not Walter White.

The same thing happened to Rand Paul in the debates. he got like 4 minutes with all the back and forth over what Donald Trump said. Same with Scott Walker.

Yup. A war hero? A guy who killed someone else? With a gun? Probably in a war of aggression over natural resources. Hey hey, how many babies did you kill today?

Jim Webb would fit in with democrats maybe 15 years ago. But now he would considered a warmongerer. he also has views on guns that would allow citizens to keep them. BAD, Jim Webb. Bad.

So - surprise! - no candidates for the succession.

And maybe even use them and showcase them and brandish them whenever and however he wants!

Bad college campuses, schools, churches and businesses for wanting place restrictions on the violent gunpowder machines! BAD!

I was surprised how lackluster he was in that debate. But at least he was not as bad as that Chaffee "paradigm" person.

Big Mike said...

@pm317, according to focus groups, Webb finished a strong second to Sanders, with Hillary finishing a poor third (under 10%), not much above Chaffee and O'Malley. The pundits anointed Hillary the winner, not the people, and it's the pundits who are dismissing Webb, not the people.

Jim Webb is a Democrat for the real people in the party, but not for the Democrats who dominate hashtag politics.

I'd like to see Webb do well, his views seem to be closest to mine of all the candidates. But I think he has neither the political chops nor the maniacal ambition needed to be elected POTUS.

" Hillary is nodding her head up and down"

She dos that a lot. Early Parkinsons most likely.

Poor Jim Webb, he left the GOP to join Bill Clinton's Democrat Party, and now he learns that it no longer exists.

Michael K said...

"now he learns that it no longer exists."

It has;t for some time. Probably 1975. Clinton's party was the GOP Congress that was elected in 1994. They made him successful.

Roughcoat said...

He's war hero, sure, but he's also a jerk. I mean, an industrial-strength jerk. In a bullying, blowhard sort of way.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Well, anyone upset about the fact that the Old Democrat party no longer exists can visit their Dixiecrats among the Republicans, which welcomed them with open arms.

But I forgot. Parties never change support bases and the segregationists like Strom Thurmond, etc., never bolted for the Republicans after Buckley's defense of segregation and Theodore Roosevelt never called himself a "progressive" and Republicans were always a conservative party of theocrats like Ralph Reed (and Barry Goldwater, he was a very conservative Christian and early supporter of the "moral majority").

It is important for Republicans to be able to rewrite history in order to defend their place in it. The facts will be changed, because a partisan, revisionist, ideological political agenda is all that matters.

When it comes to party loyalty, Republicans are the new Communists.

Remember, Jim Webb is ex-military, so I think more of Sam Kinison:

Say it! Say it!

Reminds me of McCain with the constant harking back to his service in Vietnam. Another guy who ran as a "Conservative Democrat" then became a liberal Senator when he got to DC. Now he's back playing the "conservative Democrat" shtick again.

Who knows, maybe Trump will make him Secretary of the Navy.

rcocean said...

Webb and Chaffee should just hang it up. No one even knows why they're running. They're selling a product way past its sell date that no one wants to buy.

Beldar said...

Webb is a very odd man, but he's not stupid, and he knows he cannot possibly win the Democratic nomination. But he's trying to make a point in his candidacy, and he knew this was his first and quite possibly his only chance to do that.

He's essentially fussing at CNN for not pretending hard enough that they take him seriously. But that doesn't mean he takes his chances of winning seriously himself, it just means he wants to be taken as a serious person whose views (he believes) are entitled to consideration by the Democratic Party at this particular moment.

This happens in both parties. Remember which party was on the slavery side in the civil war. Which party passed Jim Crow. Which party ran Eugenics programs.

Also remember which party runs our currently segregated public schools which are screwing black kids. Also remember who was president and whose policies were inflicted on the nation the last 7 years while black family wealth dropped by record amounts. Who repealed Glass-Stegall and who passed Dodd-Frank leading the to fastest rate of consolidation in the banking industry in a long time.

Both parties are in it to screw the poor. Stop pretending like the democrat party even gives a shit. That just makes you a stupid tool.

Achilles said...

If Webb got up there and said he would repeal Dodd-Frank, Replace Glass-Steagall, and break up the big 5 banks he would instantly be relevant - in both parties. All of the Democrats on that stage would have looked over and their eyes would have bugged out of their heads. Clinton would melt instantly.

He would be an instant front runner. But you don't get donations that way.

All I can think of is the scene in American Pie II where Allyson Hannigan's character, in the throws of ecstasy, screams out: "Say my name...SAY MY NAME BITCH!".

Makes me laugh, but then that's just me.

I hate the 'say my name' business. So '90s LLCoolJ (among many). In the case of Breaking Bad, so insecure white guy (writers) trying to be tuff by appropriating and living vicariously through porny hip hop fantasies that were absurd to begin with. Stupid.

All those restrictions are doing is keeping sane people from having the means to defend themselves against armed sociopaths who won't respect those restrictions.

It's like trying to stop an armed invasion of your country by a hostile foreign power by putting up a "KEEP OUT" sign at the border.

Webb is NOT a conservative. He is a deeply patriotic liberal who is proud of this country's military.

That's a type that is nearly extinct these days. But it sure wasn't extinct 50 years ago. JFK was a war hero. FDR had ordered a big military buildup back when the GOP was solidly against it. Etc.

I had a generally favorable opinion of Webb based on his service as a Marine and in the reagan admin. Then, I read his book on the history of the Scots-Irish in America "Born Fighting" and liked him a lot. great book, I highly recommend it.

Then he proved himself to be a total scumbag not deserving even to be elected dogcatcher. In January 2007 he gave his aide a gymn bag to take to the office. the bag had Webb's gun in it. The gun was discovered, the aide was arrested and Webb let him spend a night (2 nights?) in jail before coming forward to say the gun was his.

Webb had a permit to carry the gun in DC, provided that it was unloaded. It was not. Webb was in violation of the law even if he had been personally carrying the gun. I also don't see why a former Marine, who should know better, put a loaded gun in a gym bag regardless of who was going to carry it and what permits they had. It just seems careless.

So, Jim Webb, go fuck yourself. You dishonored the Marine Corps and yourself by this action. You deserve to be unemployed for the balance of your life.

Jim Webb exposed his lack of understanding of the aging process. Bernie Sanders is 74 years old and thus is subject to normal age-related cognitive memory loss which brings on a "senior moment" when name recall is impeded momentarily. Short memory loss becomes real when forgetfulness takes over and name recall failure happens frequently.
