"Holding homemade signs reading 'God Hates Renoir' and 'Treacle Harms Society,' the protesters... chanted: 'Put some fingers on those hands! Give us work by Paul Gauguin!'..."

"... and 'Other art is worth your while! Renoir paints a steaming pile!'... The [Museum of Fine Arts] hasn’t commented on the fledgling movement..."

I'm glad finally somebody cares enough to do something about this longstanding travesty. Catch up with Max Geller's Renoir Sucks at Painting, which has entries like this:

ADDED: This post made me click my "Renoir" tag, and that got me to a quote from "Lady Chatterley's Lover": "Renoir said he painted his pictures with his penis... he did too, lovely pictures! I wish I did something with mine."

WTF, Renoir paints good. He's not a Dutch Calvinist Rembrandt, but he's pretty good for a Frenchy.

There are those who just can't get enough of that too-pink, soft-focus take on a zaftig female image. But then there's the olive-shaded, stretched out ovaloid look that Amadeo M preferred, or the cut-up cubist craziness that became all the rage a bit later, to say nothing of the wacked out, torn apart perspective of W deK.

So many wonderful and entertaining protests yet to come at BMoFA.

If we could only do something about the crappy poetry Garrison Keilor reads in his "writer's almanac" thing for NPR. I wonder how much they pay him reciting this dreck? All the poems sound as though they are written by upper middle class housewives with MFA's from the university of Iowa. Here is today's example:

The dock is done, pulled out in the lake. How I love
Putting my wet foot
On the boards I sawed myself!
It is a ladder stretching back to land…

So many secrets are still hidden.
A walker digs up a tin box with secrets
And then joyfully buries it again
So that the night and day will remain fresh.

The horse stands penned, but is also free.
It is a horse whose neck human
Beings have longed to touch for centuries.
He stands in a stable of invisible wood.

It's by Robert Bly, but it still sounds as though it was written by an upper middle class housewife with an MFA from the University of Iowa.

"hurts my eyes. A nefarious act of #aestheticterrorism."

Maybe for Renoir it was unintentional but much of modern art intends to hurt and terrorize. (And hurt the rich in their wallets, terrorize them into masking their cultural insecurity by shelling out big bucks for crap.)

Renoir said he painted his pictures with his penis...

Yeah, I've heard that before. How did he clean his brush? (Not with turpentine, I hope...)

How does someone have so little to do in life that they attend a "playful Renoir protest"? What the hell is this even supposed to mean?

And for the record, if you don't like Renoir, you are a Philistine with no taste.

HoodlumDoodlum said...

Aren't Renoir's sculptures and the sculptures he collaborated with others on supposed to be pretty good, though?

Also, what do you want to be the same people sneering at Renoir just love some bullshit like Damien Hirst or (insert postmodern hack artist here)?

A few years ago I went to a Monet exhibit at the High and they had a room-sized (40+ feet) triptych of his Water Lillies. I was disappointingly unimpressed--even from a distance they didn't look very good, and up close it was a mess. However, in the hallway to that room they had some of his smaller paintings, including one from the Houses of Parliament series, and it was really amazing. So, you know, if Renoir had some misses and the wrong work of his gets the attention, maybe he's still pretty damn impressive anyway.

Monet had cataracts later in life, and the water lily series benefits from being approached with that in mind. As the former bearer of cataracts, I never see those paintings without thinking of what I've been spared. It's Gauguin I'd be protesting.

I need a sign that says, "Can't Stand Gauguin."

I recommend browsing with text white and background middle grey, by the way. It's far superior to what page designers choose.

excuse me for my ignorance but can't you people just choose not to look at the paintings that offend you?

It's not that Renoir is so bad. It's the people who like him. Those people are just hopeless. Many of them work full time and aren't even skinny......,Perhaps this problem could be solved by stating that this is a panting of a young girl in light refracted through a urine bottle. Stated in such a manner, the portrait is bound to appeal to hipsters and annoy the good citizens......The influence of Renoir can be seen in the depiction of the Simpsons' hands. A true artist doesn't overdo the fingers. Three is a reasonable number.

Gauguin a go-go.

Seeing many of the impressionists at a museum was a bit of a disappointment for me. Many of their paintings actually look better when reproduced in posters or books.

But the old Oil paintings. Wow. The real thing is very impressive

LOL William.

I was going to say that for a blind painter, Renoir wasn't so bad. But I had confused Renoir with Claude Monet.

I have to say, although I think the protest is ridiculous, they've almost convinced me of the merit of the opinion about Renoir. I clicked over there and saw some of the portraits that I don't recall seeing or noticing before- and one in particular struck me, and then I saw that a commenter had the same thought about it that I had:
artjackerIs this the artist who restored the Spanish Christ?

Renoir's Two Sisters (On a Terrace) is the most amazing painting I have ever seen, in person. Reproductions do no justice to it.

At an exhibition of Monet's "Haystacks", I said they were painted during his "Bran Muffin Period".

Got me dirty looks from the hoity-toity Art Nazis.

"Hey Butthead, check this out. There's this guy who paints pictures with his wiener."

"Whoa ... that pretty cool. What channel is he on?"

"I don't know. It must be on HBO."

"Beavis, this guy rules."

Bad art better than no art. Who knew I would be humming "The Final Countdown" every time I start the microwave.

I find Gauguin's paintings painful to the eye.

I did note in the NPR piece that the chief protester made much of the "dead white male" meme. Too many white, pallid faces, too many white people, etc. I do assume this is all tongue-in-cheek and that they really don't dislike Renoir at all.

This guy (in charge of the picketing) has too much time on his hands. Wonder what he does for a living? At least, this would be one of the few times a MFA, say, would actually be appropriate for something other than teaching or appraisals.

Sprezzatura said...

Having seen a fair number of his paintings, I've been impressed with the way he captures "something" about gals.

Anywho, one look at the second part of my handle should make it clear that I'm no expert.

Some of these comments seem to be taking this way too seriously. It's satire. It's performance art. I assume that these people genuinely don't like Renoir, but their absurdly over-the-top protest is hilarious. Doing something like this on your day off to make people laugh is a great thing.
