"It's been almost four years since Hillary Clinton came on a Sunday show."

Said John Dickerson, introducing Hillary Clinton on "Face the Nation." I watched it. Here's the transcript. I feel as though I should pick something specific out, but I mostly have a general observation, which is that it's exasperating to listen to her because she follows a pattern of beginning with a short, perhaps inadequate answer to the question asked, and then she dumps paragraphs of material as if the goal is to make you forget the question or at least lose interest in whether an answer will ever arrive. She'd be a lot more appealing to me if she gave a short, clear answer and then just stopped.

I'll give one example:
DICKERSON: Was [Benghazi] your 3:00 a.m. phone call? And how well did you handle that crisis, by the standard you raised in that ad?
CLINTON: Well, of course it was a crisis.
This looks like it's responsive, but the question wasn't was it a crisis, but is this the sort of thing you were talking about in the old 3:00 a.m. ad.
And we lost four brave Americans, including the person that I asked the president to send as ambassador, Chris Stevens. But we live in a dangerous world. And even our diplomats are at threat. And that goes all the way back to, for goodness' sake, taking over our embassy in Tehran or the bombings of our embassy in Beirut, when President Reagan was in charge. This is a dangerous world. And I think what we had to do during that period of time, in trying to protect our people after the attack on the consulate, getting them evacuated, not only working on what was going on in Libya, because, remember, we had embassies that were under attack or threatened to attack by terrorist groups across North Africa, indeed, across a much larger swathe of the world. So, I think it was terribly tragic, what happened. I immediately asked for an independent review, just like former secretaries of state did. And I made that public. And the only other person who did that was Secretary Albright after our embassies were bombed in Africa. So, my view on this is, we have to learn things. And we are always learning. We learned after Beirut. We learned after Tanzania and Kenya. We have learned after Benghazi, but we're not going to be able to represent the United States working out of hermetically sealed tanks. We are going to have to be out in the world.
None of this addresses whether she met the standard she referred to in that ad. It's awfully close to her old "what difference does it make?" remark. It's a dangerous world and we have to be out in it. We're always learning.

Vigor will (and maybe should) matter. Betty White and Jack LaLanne were more vigorous at 90 than Orson Welles was at 70. For the same reason, I suspect that age would hurt Hillary and Sanders more than it would hurt Biden. Biden looks and sounds vigorous.

Plus, even if Biden's mind starts slipping, who could tell? His filter has always been busted, so if he says something foolish or embarrassing, that just goes with his brand.

Hilary had a stroke a couple years back. She denied that it was a stroke but her medical team said it was a cerebral venous thrombosis(CVT) which according to the American Heart Association and others is just a fancy medical term for stroke.

So the question is: Has she recovered from it?

And, is she likely to have another one if she does get into office?

It just seems like a medley of fixing mistakes instead of avoiding them. These are big errors, with casualities, not minor learning experiences. I'm leaning towards Bernie Sanders, whose facebook prose is promising, but Carly on the other side is also on my mind, she's good and would love to have a good lady president. There's a number of women leaders out there already. Carly seems tough, but still so very female, which I think could soften America's image from warmongers to nurturing example setters, care takers, CEO decision makers, negotiators, business development makers. I like the idea of a female Donald Trump for President of the colorful and united, USA. A woman with the talent, know-how and social skills to be convincing and enlightening. Carly seems quick on her feet.

She screwed up three times. I could forgive her for the first. The mistakes leading up to the attack.

The second is the 3AM call. If she had been up in arms calling DOD, the WH, and the CIA, demanding that planes be launched and a reaction force sent, I'd forgive her. Her complete passivity that night and the complete opaqueness of her actions that night are incontrovertible evidence that she is a craven and weak leader.

Lying to the families of the fallen is just another nail in the coffin of her WH hopes...

My general impression was that she spoke in a way that looks natural, but it's all carefully chosen words.

You have to know a lot of details to know that some of what she said is wrong

And at the same time some of it is, which could be surprising maybe to some people, half truths but not lies - there really were demonstrations around the world predicated on the video - of course that was after the video story was making some headway in the U.s. government.

Sammy Finkelman said...

About the 3 am question: She didn't give the obvious answer:

The Benghazi incident didn't happen at 3 am - it took place or continued, until past 3 am Libyan time but it was all over before midnight Eastern Daylight Time, so it was not a 3am phone call.

I guess she thought an answer like that wouldn't help.

She said nothing at all about the events of that night, and there was a lot of back and forth. I guess she thought there was no point in alerting anyone who didn't know that there were chances during that night (in Libya) to do things differently, and that 2 of 4 Americans killed got killed at the very end.

Hillary Clinton said a few things that would only mean something to people who had extensive knowledge of the events of that night - and they were only partial allusions to things.

The report that she commissioned - imitating Secretary Albright must have been part of the spin at the time - I didn't know that - that report was all about why there was not sufficient security before - which was the only deficiency that Hillary Clinton chose to adress - and that did not involve any looking into any decision that Hillary Clinton herself had made.

They couldn't have looked into her input anyway, since nobody had access to any of her emails!! At least not in any organized way.

Anyway, typically she would email a few close aides, some of them who also had email accounts not on the state.gov system.

She might speak by voice, but there is no record of that.

Sammy Finkelman said...

The most blatant like was this here:

And when we were asked to help the State Department make sure they had everything from other secretaries of state, not just me,

She's said this before.

The only reason the State Department asked for e-mails from other secretaries of state is because she and her lawyers insisted they do things that way, precisely so she could put this kind of a spin on it.

I'm the one who said, OK, great, I will go through them again. And we provided all of them. And more than 90 percent were already in the system.

She, I think, maybe provided some - the record is not really public. Anyway apparently she at one point provided some and the State Department was not satisfied.

The reason 90% of them were already there was because she deliberatly structured it to supply mainly what might exist elsewhere. It should have been near 100% but sometimes the other peron didn't archive it.

It's everything that is not on the system that might be of interest.

Is this true? Interesting that the "only other person" statement could refer to either of the preceding statements. Was Albright the only former secretary of state who asked for an independent review, or the only one who made it public?

It sounds at first like she's saying that Albright is the only former secretary of state who asked for an independent review, but if that's what she meant, she'd be contradicting herself.

She said other "secretaries of state" - plural - asked for an independent review. So, therefore, what Secretary Albright did was make a review public.

But she made it sound like only she and Albright commissioned reviews of something or other. That makes her, or at least all female secretaries of state look better.

Better than average.

Hillary sometimes doesn't realize how un-informed or narrow fcused people are. WQhen she thinks of Rusia aiding Hezbollah she's thinking of the way Hezbollah has been used as Bashir Assad's best troops. But what Netanyahu is worried about is the possibility that they might attack (shoot rockets) at Israel, and Israel has tended to consider Hezbollah a separate entity from the Syrian army, although I don't think it's anything separate any more..

It took her awhile to catch on what the concern was here.

Just one and half years, and she'd still be holding on to them if there hadn't been a Trey Gowdy Benghazi committee, which subpoenaed everybody important in the State Department and lo and behod it was discovered, there were e-mails FROM Hillary Clinton in some oher people's e-mail archives but no corresponding copy from her end, and the State Department strove to satisfy the subpoena before admitting the fact she had used no state.gov email account.

George W Bush had only been in office less than 8 months when 9/11 happened so you can't really place any blame on him, or use that as a ciunter to the subsequent record.

Well, no. it is like Mrs. Clinton could have prevented it, that’s one of the major points. It was SEPT 11TH!!! a jihadi aniversary. And intelligence knew that the jihadi’s were hungry to avenge one of their leaders we had recently vaporized. The now deceased Ambassador was warning of the threat and begging for more security. YES, SHE COULD HAVE PREVENTED IT if she had shown just a little competence. She was too busy selling American interests world wide for major contributions to her personal money laundering, er 'Charitable Foundation'.

No, I remember a bunch of New York liberals banding together calling them selves the 9-11 widows and making (#&&-hats of themselves. Hmm, the left using someone... like Michael Brown or Cindy Sheehan, pretty typical. I don’t remember the administration making much of a response to that.

J. Farmer said...

As tragic as Ambassador Stevens' and the three other American's deaths were, Benghazi has always been a sideshow to the much more significant and consequential decision to pursue regime change in Libya in the first place. It was not difficult to predict that overturning the existing order on a quick, destructive timescale would result in an anarchic order in which tribal warfare and warlordism would vie for political power. It was also easy to predict that such chaos could not be easily contained by political borders. Not only has the festering anarchy in Libya allowed violent radical elements to gain footholds, it has contributed to destabilization in neighboring states like Mali and has pushed migrants into the Mediterranean and towards the European continent.

It should be easy to mount a conservative critique of the Obama administration's war in Libya. However, when one revisits those critique, they are almost entirely in the direction that Obama was not doing enough to more aggressively pursue the war aims. Remember he was being ridiculed for "leading from behind." Given the GOP's general support for regime change in Libya, it is no wonder they have had to focus their critique on the outcome in Benghazi and try to claim that problems in Libya were with the way it was managed, not with the goal itself.

As I have said many times, the most ironic thing about a so called "neoconservative" foreign policy is how much it relies on liberal assumptions about history and human nature.

narciso said...

there was no need to go to war in Libya, the uprising that started out in Ali Salem prison, would have burned out in due time, just like the toppling of Mubarak, an unnecessary push, and the training of rebels against Assad, what do they have in common, they were projects of the Moslem Brotherhood,

Let me explain, malakos. There was an election going on then -- a very important re-election of a Presidential fraud. It was imperative that Benghazi not become a campaign issue and so Mrs Clinton and Mrs Rice lied to the American people about what really happened. Candy Crawly went so far to as to collude with Barack Obama during a televised debate with Mitt Romney regarding the matter. She latter apologized for something. There were exactly two people here at the Althouse blog who fellated and swallowed the Obama line on Benghazi. They were named Inga and Cedarford (odd bedfellows I know). It is a matter of historical record here and you can look it up.

Amazed that only Sammy mentioned Hillary's (and Obama'a) lie about a video.

Hillary Clinton met the families of the Benghazi victims when their coffins arrived at Andrews Air Force Base and she told a mother of one of the victims "We'll get the person who made that video".

Obama and HRC hatched up a cover up on Benghazi to last two months so they could win in 2012 November but their lies and deceit will be what history will record.

BTW - that guy in California who made the video that triggered the Benghazi attack - is he still in jail?

Now the media freely talks about the fact that Benghazi 9/1112 was a terrorist attack.

I actually think it was Hillary who convinced Obama et al to blame it on a video - it just smells so much like all her other creepy schemes in her career.

I also observed a lot of agism bias and mysogny among commenters here - because Bernie and Joe are so much more "youthful" and so less "tired"

No matter who you want - a Dem or a Republican - I think we're all in agreement like a Venn Diagram intersect - we do not want a Bush vs Clinton rematch in 2016.

Yes, Hillary looks her age, esp if you take into account some of the high class plastic surgery she (and her husband) has had. But that is not good for someone old enough to only be a questionable Baby Boomer (on the old side). Since her, we have had almost the entirety of the Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, the Millenials, and now Gen Z (whatever that is), who could be her grand or great grand children. If Ann doesn't see her problem, I think it may be because she (Ann) is looking at it from the point of view of someone only a couple years younger. There are advantages to age, but also some disadvantages, notably a lower energy level, less flexible brain, and a disconnect with much of technology and the influence of technology in the lives of voters. Making this worse for Hillary is that she hasn't apparentlly driven in 20 years, and appears technologically illiterate with her defense of he private email system. Hard to believe her wiping comment was cleared by a focus group with anyone under 30 years of age. She just isn't with it (but the older Trump still is), for many/most voters younger than, say, 50.

Bruce Hayden said...

Why did/does Benghazi matter in regards to Hillary's credentials for the Presidency?
1) pushing for the Arab Spring was stupid. Did Huma have a part there?
2) pushing for the ouster of Quadaffi as part of this was stupid. What were they thinking?
3) things fell apart in Libya that summer. Militias were starting to run wild throughout the country, and esp, apparently, around Benghazi. People on the ground (including Amb. Stevens) realized the problem and asked for increased security. Instead, it was reduced. The scheduled reduction had apparently been politically determined to support the narrative that the regime change and support of the Arab Spring had been a success. So, the scheduled security reduction went forward, and the four Americans died.
4) When the 3 o'clock crisis came, she appears to have slept through it. These were her people, and they died without her making a peep. American policy for generations has been not to leave anyone behind, but they did this time. She probably should have been burning the wires trying to get military, etc intervention. Instead - silence. Saying that it wouldn't have helped, or might not have, misses the point - Anmericans were abandoned. And two died at the end, still apparently lasing targets in the vain hope that help might arrive. Maybe she couldn't have gotten permission/buy-in from Obama - but she never even tried.
5) The cover up, and her part in it, started immediately. Both Obama and Hillary knew almost immediately that this was not a spontaneous uprising, but was rather a planned military assault. Crew served weapons were being used (properly), a reserve was being held back, another force had been deployed to trap any rescue attempts, etc. Yet, Obama and Hillary almost immediately decided to use the video as the excuse. It was Amb Rice, who worked for Hillary, who went on all the Sun. talk shows to push this false story. And then Hillary had the gall to push it on the families of her victims/employees.
6) The coverup continues, as the months around the Benghazi attack have disappeared from her emails (not her entire email then, ,just her Libya related email). These were apparently, maybe, considered "personal" by her people, and thus not subject to requests by Congress for precisely these emails, or FOIA requests, but instead could be deleted.

Is this important? I think so. She is running for POTUS. And, yes, she is probably home free legally for all of the crimes she committed as Sec of State if she can be elected. Rationally, does this all indicate that she does, or does not have the character for the highest position in the country? That she will or won't continue to live up to our trust?

If your lawyerly understanding concludes "who whom" does that impact society in any way?

Should it?

Trust me, men greater than you, men who Mike Kennedy would say "whoa" considering their achievements, have great kids serving to our unimaginable benefit. They are too great to let 8 years of Clinton or Obama destroy them. 8 years of McConnel and Boehnor could very well, conflagration-wise, get some power for only a select few, triggering, and I'll type it again, for emphasis, triggering, August Derlithesque drama.

We are not living Hardin's soap opera, and I can confirm it.

The fact the intelligent fool sees Althouse as other than soap, opera confounds me, for if it is more what am I?

I want to know how you get to the place in politics where people expect you to say dumb things and they're okay with it. For most politicians that would be a career killer, but there are a few who can get away with saying anything and people just chuckle and say "That's just Joe Biden being Joe Biden."

What I have noticed about Hillary is that she often echoes her talking points too directly. For example, she might say "The important thing for people to understand here is that I am not the villain in this...." or something like that. Almost like she is giving out the heading for a list of talking points that try to convey that sense indirectly.

She is kind of autistic, I think. Not sure she would pass a Turing test.

The wisdom delivery truck never stopped at Hillary's door.

No room for that. The ambition and neediness didn't leave enough space.

Wisdom would tell her when enough was enough. Does she look like a happy individual?

She looks unhealthy. Actually she is two years younger than Donald Trump. Yet he seems much more energetic and vital than she does.

Trump is having the time of his life. Hillary is grimly following her path like a degenerate gambler walking zombie-like back into the casino. She could use a good twelve-step program, if you ask me.

Well,I am sure John Dickerson's advocacy for the complete destruction of the GOP gave her the level of comfort she needed to face actual questions.

Funny how that little snot who hosted the Emmies last night couldn't think of a single Hillary joke. It's a mystery.

Remember when TV used to go for a broader audience? It was a long time ago.

Why is it one has to parse every word she utters?

It's reason enough to oppose her. I'm tired of having to decipher what possible "outs" somebody's every comment gives themselves.

I want plain speech for a change.

I never understood the confusion about Benghazi. Some bastards killed some American diplomats. This happens! It's not like Mrs. Clinton could have prevented it. And, anyways, if "W" was President, these men's families probably would have been terrorized and abused afterwards. Remember the disgraceful treatment the 9-11 widows got from Cheney,W and company?! Oh, and then the stock market would lose 50% of its value.

You mean political opponents (and they were purely political) get push back? Stunning.

Clinton LIED to these peoples' families. Lied to their face.

And the economy has been shit under her and Obama. Try and keep up.

I'd also like somebody to ask her, after she discusses how the debate over Obamacare is over because it's "The law of the land" to discuss the differences in that and, say, Citizens United.

I'm no psychoanalyst but I'd say this is due to her insecurity--she knows if she tries speaking extemporaneously she will drift off script and into gaffe-world. All politicians do this to some degree, but the better ones at least can sound like they're thinking while they're talking. She does not have natural political gifts.

In a way, it's sort of cruel that Bill (a genuine sociopath who obviously cares for no one but himself) and other Clintonistas who stand to benefit from a Hillary presidency are pushing her into this, and feeding her delusions that encourage her to run. I don't think she enjoys any part of this, and has to convince herself to do it.

She'd probably have been better off in some quiet but well-paid job, or with a more non-political role as First Lady.

It is not just Dickerson, but media interviewers as a whole are pathetic. They do not listen to the answer and ask logical follow up questions.

Here, he simply went on to the next pre-prepared question and then asked no meaningful follow up to that one.

DICKERSON: One more question on Benghazi. The charge is, in this campaign, that after it happened, there was a report inside the State Department and inside the government that this was a terrorist attack.

Amazed that only Sammy mentioned Hillary's (and Obama'a) lie about a video.

Anything about that wasn't quoted.

I actually think it was Hillary who convinced Obama et al to blame it on a video

This gets it all wrong. It is very important to understand that that was the terrorists' lie, not Obama's lie, which was beibg backed up by foreign intelligence agencies (which may have been complicit in the attack) and by the CIA.
Hillary's fault here is that she did not want to challenge that. She did not fight the claims that there was a demonstration that spiralled into an attack ad that the whole thing was spontaneous. She only fought the claims that they had been warned (which they were not in any specific way) and that the mission was a consulate.

The purpose of the lie was that nobody should investigate further. This wasintended for the White House, but this was such "good news" to them that they made it public and it exploded in their faces.

The New York Times has reported that the attackers spread rumors that a demonstration had been fired on, attracted a crowd, posted guards and harrangued people about the video - which absolutely nobody in Benghazi had heard of before.

It was the terrorists who posted the video - in all probability it was the terrorists (or the Moslem Brotherhood) that commissioned the video.
