Further exploration of the distinction between "light red" and "pink."

This is carrying on a subject from the previous post, possibly carrying on way too much, but you may like it if you want something utterly unpolitical with an intense academic bite and a twist of Scrabble.

Let's look at "Meanings and Prototypes (RLE Linguistics B: Grammar): Studies in Linguistic Categorization," edited by S.L. Tsohatzidis. Here, we see that "The use of syntactic paraphrase when a lexical form is available... implicates that there is some question about the appropriateness of the lexical form. Of the shared semantic space, the lexicalized form tends to pre-empt the core, and the periphrasic form is relegated to the periphery. And example of..."

The important thing to remember is that they're all pink inside.

Or maybe that's light red. I'll have to check.

Bottom line: Carly's jacket is pink.

It's all a moot point because apparently there is no such thing as pink http://blog.seattlepi.com/thebigblog/2012/03/09/science-explains-why-the-color-pink-doesnt-exist/

Whatever.

Let's face it, if her outfit would have sported the Ming the Merciless collar and massive gold medallion a truly serious Vaginal-American candidate for President wears we wouldn't be quibbling over color names. Nor whether it was appropriate to picture her in pigtails.

I saw her in person in Norwalk, Iowa. She had another sharp outfit and I was stumped on the color; light red-Salmon-pinkish.

When men wear it light pink is called 'coral'. That's what the Haband catalog calls it and that's good enough for me.

From Tim in Vermont on the other thread: "I wonder if it bothers Althouse, who is so attuned to the arts, that Hillary knowingly lied to the grieving families when she blamed the attacks in Libya on a piece of art, and then the Obama admin went on to put that artist in Jail?"

She doesn't really get into people lying about how people die, be they 4 adult men in Libya to tiny, tiny babies yanked out out of a womb.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE COLOR PINK! Maybe she should ask Made Benjamin if it's pink. She's in Althouse's wheelhouse.

Ann Althouse said...

Coral and salmon have more yellow than the color we're talking about here. They're pastels in the category of orange.

Colors aren't even physically real. They're the physiological response of the human eye to selected wavelengths of light. You can't define "yellow" by wavelength because the sensation can also be activated by "red" and "green" wavelengths coming in at the same time.

And if you want to generate "pink" in MS Paint (according to the RGB system), you do mix red with white, which is a light red (according to the HLS system).

Laslo Spatula said...

Let's go CMYK and bring magenta into the conversation.

Gabriel said...

Pink is a pale red color.

Hear now the arguments over whether "pale red" is the same thing as "light red". We may as well argue over how many grains of sand make a heap--the symbolic logic is identical.

Scott said...

I think of pink as being closer to magenta. But unlike magenta, pink is not easily definable as a color. It's in the red part of the spectrum, but biased more toward blue.

Gabriel said...

In optics, pink can refer to any of the colors between bluish red (purple) and red, of medium to high brightness and of low to moderate saturation.

From the same source.

I always used to argue with my parents about whether a shade of blue was "green" or not; they thought I might be color-blind but color-blindness doesn't work that way. We were putting the blue/green line in different places because that line is arbitray, juts like the bald/not-bald line.

Some days I wonder if Ann is trolling.

Pick your color

Note the various types of light pink. Several are very close if not identical to CF's outfit. Light pink 2 is as near as damn it, if anyone asks me. "Light red" isn't even included in more than 500 named colors.

For someone who is not at work:

Use GIMP or Photoshop on the images of Carly Fiorina from the debate and report the RGB values back. Then we can compare to "pink"--but as the vast majority of people use the word, "light red" is a subset of the "pink" colors, and Ann's "it's not pink, it's light red" is like saying "it's not a car, it's a Cadillac", which is a metaphorical statement and not a true statement, because of course a Cadillac is a kind of car and light red is a kind of pink.

Digital color can expressed be expressed as a hexadecimal string, normally the number sign followed by the string. These range from #000000 (pure black) to #FFFFFF (pure white). If every value in between represents a color, then there's about 2.815 x 10^14 colors. That's a big number. No one has yet bothered to name even one of them "light red."

Another kind of "color dictionary" is maintained by Pantone. Searching for "light red" on their site produces: There are no results for the code and criteria entered. Please refine your search with respect to the following guidelines...

Clearly the onus is on Althouse to demonstrate that "light red" even exists in this universe.

Gabriel said...

@Quaestor: No one has yet bothered to name even one of them "light red."

None of those colors are named "red" either without a qualifier, so does "red" not exist? It's a class of colors, and so would "light red" be.

The hierarchy would be red > pink > light red > color specified by hexadecimal or Pantone.

Use GIMP or Photoshop on the images of Carly Fiorina

I've done the work (at work, but no one bothers me). Using This photo from The Telegraph I sampled the color from right lapel, which seemed to me to be the best lit area. Photoshop gives these values:

R:248 G:130 B:149

C:0% M:62% Y:23% K:0%

Hex: #F98295

Judging by the CMYK values Carly's outfit is coral. Light red, me eye... No wonder Althouse gave up fine art for the law, she's f'ing color-blind! That also explains her preference for black outfits - can't mismatch purple and yellow when everything is in the closet is black.

Quaestor said...

Gabriel, go to the linked site or Pantone's site and search for "light red."

None of those colors are named "red" either. Not according to Pantone.

Lemme help you out here:

Red, green, blue, yellow, white.

I ran Carly's jacket through a color picker and it comes up as soft red. Is that sexist too?

On the premise of the article, I would submit that pale yellow is to cream as pale red is to pink.

I'd like to see you on a jury, letting a rapist off because the victim said he was wearing a blue jacket and you thought it was teal.

Agreed. This is the type of arguments that my partner makes when she is caught out being wrong. I have learned not to follow her down the rabbit hole. Instead, I just say "whatever" in my best (i.e. not very good) valley girl accent.

We've gone this far without a comment about Larry "Think Pink" Flynt?

Imagine working Color on His magazine.

"Is that pink?"

"It's pink-ish, but I don't think it's pink-pink."

"So what do we do?"

"We remove some cyan and black."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. An excess of cyan and black in the vaginal area means either the photographer was stupidly trying for something artsy and moody with the vagina, or it is just the withered vagina of a meth addict."

"I thought you just had to enhance 'Saturation' with meth vaginas."

"What are you -- straight out of Graphics School? The Hue is all wrong: think salmon, not mollusk."

"I'm cranking Saturation but it just looks gray.":

"That's because there is no color left in her vagina: odor, yes, but no color, just faded weary roast beef."

"What are those little white spots? Is that dust on the lens?"

"That is just the degraded remains of forgotten condoms. Like the concept of Hope, they will leave her system eventually..."

"I'm not sure I can do this job..."

"You haven't even tried to remove wet fecal matter from a model's eyelids yet: don't be a quitter."

"I just don't think I can do this..."

"Son: this is women. This is who they are."

"Even the ones with the cankerous herpes on the labia?"

"Even those, son: even those."

Speaking of pink, Medea Benjamin was on Cspan for three hours last Saturday.

I didn't watch it too attentively, but she was much more reasonable than I could have imagined based on the little bits of her organization that have come to my attention over the years.

I was also shocked at how often she's been physically, attacked in America and abroad. Far from calling attention to these attacks, they only came up as a response to folks calling in. And then, it took the moderator's follow-up to really open the floodgate of details.

She didn't throw rhetorical bombs. She didn't say folks who disagree with her are some version of evil. She mentioned having deeply close R relatives who completely disagree w/ her, and who measure her success by her appearing on the Bill O's show. She was all grace, but the bits I'd seen about her before Saturday seemed anything but grace.

Anywho, next month it'll be three hours with Lynne Cheney. I doubt my opinion of her will change because I've seen plenty of her already. Medea, especially three hours of her, was more of an introduction.

Perhaps "light red" is a red with low hue saturation, while "pink" is a tint of red. (A tint of a color is any color with white added to it, as a shade of a color is any color with black added to it.)
