"Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik won a place on Friday to study at Oslo University from solitary confinement in prison, despite outrage at his massacre of 77 people four years ago."

"'He meets the admission requirements. We stick to our rules and he will be admitted,' Oslo University rector Ole Petter Ottersen told Reuters, saying prisoners are eligible to study as long as their academic grades are good enough.... 'I realise there are many feelings involved here. He tried to demolish the system. We have to stay faithful to it.'... The course includes study of democracy, human rights and respect for minorities.... 'His study will be carried out exclusively in his own cell.'"

He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, in a form of preventive detention that required a minimum of 10 years incarceration and the possibility of an extension of that incarceration for as long as he is deemed a danger to society

If you are going to give someone who murdered 77 people the possibility of getting out of jail after 10 years, you might as well allow him to educate himself.

Western Civilisation will die blindly following its secular rules by rote rather than reason. And lacking morality, it will die not a martyr, but rather unlamented.

Indiscriminate killing. I guess the proximity of their deaths made it newsworthy. Not much will be said about liberals' invitation to minorities who have increased the incidence of murder and rape of Norwegians.

What are you talking about? Brevik was a right-wing loony who targeted young social democrats. He championed the silly anti-immigrant views you espouse.

So does Brevik deserve to die, Roost on the Moon?

I assume she's talking about the "liberals' invitation to minorities who have increased the incidence of murder and rape of Norwegians". The criminal stats are what they are, regardless of the fact that Breivik is a right-wing looney who targeted young social democrats. The grossly irresponsibile attitudes and policies of the governing and media class re immigration are also what they are, regardless of the fact that Breivik is a right-wing looney who targeted young social democrats. So what, pray tell, are you talking about?

Norway. The same bunch of idiots who awarded the other Barry a Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.

"Ya. He meets the admission requirements. We stick to our rules and he will be awarded, ya" Nobel Prize rector Ole Petter Ottersen told Reuters.

A government that can't execute this person doesn't deserve to exist. It has failed at one of a tiny number of things that government exists for.

If I were a Norwegian, and I saw how my government reacted to this man's effort to tear society down, I'd be motivated to leave or tear it down myself.

Ok, there's such a thing as punishment that's too harsh. But why can't a punishment be too lenient? That Serbian monster whose name I can't spell was being tried for war crimes. His cell was about the size of a Manhattan studio apartment, but with a nicer view. He had a kitchenette and private bathroom. He was being charged with the murder, rape, and torture of thousands. That doesn't scan......The comfort and ease of Brevik's life is a direct assault on the lives of the relatives of those he killed.

Although seen in various versions, the oft-quoted - and mis-quoted - line (from Jackson's dissent) "There is danger that, if the court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact."

This seems to be in that spirit. Guy slaughters enough people to fill a commuter plane, but now gets free education on-line. What the heck, he meets the minimum requirements. Wouldn't want to discriminate. They should probably be happy he doesn't want a sex change on the governement dime, be addressed as Chelsea, wear make-up and have his hair fixed.

Roost on the Moon:

I support immigration at a rate that does not exceed assimilation and integration.

I do not support condoning the conditions that motivate excessive and mass emigration from second and third-world nations.

I do not support policies that compensate for the planned abortion -- and wholesale marketing -- of around 1 million American babies' parts annually.

So, what do you support? Do you support immigration policies that preserve hostile, even inhuman conditions in foreign nations; that displace and dislocate American citizens and immigrants (i.e. violate civil rights); that increase the incidence of murder and rape in America (i.e. violate human rights); that obfuscate the harrowing consequences of indiscriminate killing (i.e. elective abortion)?

Will he survive prison? I wonder if an inmate here who killed 77 people and could possibly get out in ten years would survive.

We got a Hawaiian death penalty, even if it's executed in New Mexico.
What's missing from the story: Pauline and the Schweitzers were drugged up and driving a car. They passed Dana Ireland on her bicycle and made some obscene suggestion, and she flipped them off. They turned their car around, ran her down, breaking her pelvis. Then they stuffed her in the car and took her off road to rape her and beat her to death with a tire iron.

One of three men convicted in perhaps the most notorious murder case in Big Island history has died in a New Mexico prison.

According to a statement from the New Mexico Corrections Department, Frank Pauline Jr., was “found in the recreation yard, and was given CPR but died at Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility about 2:30 Monday afternoon.”

It was Pauline’s 42nd birthday. He and brothers Albert “Ian” Schweitzer and Shawn Schweitzer were convicted of the Christmas Eve 1991 kidnapping, rape and murder of Dana Ireland in Puna.

The cause of death was not released, but according to the statement, “No suspects have been named at this time.”

Pauline was serving a life sentence with a minimum of 180 years for Ireland’s slaying. Ian Schweitzer was serving a life sentence with a minimum of 130 years. Shawn Schweitzer, who was 16 when the crime occurred, made a plea deal and was sentenced to five years’ probation and a year in jail, already served for manslaughter.

The brutal fatal attack on the 23-year-old Ireland, who had recently graduated from George Mason University in Virginia and moved to the Big Island to live with her sister, Sandy, sent shockwaves throughout the state. She was run down by a vehicle while riding her sister’s bicycle on the entry road to Kapoho Vacationland subdivision, then taken to a secluded fishing trail in Waawaa on the Puna coastline, beaten, raped and left to die.

Pauline confessed to the killings in 1994, and implicated the Schweitzer brothers, as well. He later recanted the confession, saying he lied to help his half-brother, John Gonsalves, obtain a lighter sentence in a drug case.

Even if it's entirely F_cked. So we go from the usual "for the children" to "for the system". Nice. The same reasoning that put the dead children under the protection of unarmed guards...guns are yucky.

Since he has to use rubber pens (prior post) he should get some reasonable accommodation for exams, like an extra hour or so. Only fair.

I hope he does the minimum and then is either elected PM of Norway, or selected as president of Oslo U. Give em what they asked for.

Exactly. I don't think he'd make it here.

Bad Lieutenant said...

Depends who he killed here, and as long as we're hypothesizing, who he is. I.e., he might find protection with the proper ethnic gang. Some people think Tsarnaev will be torn apart. Oh no. He has friends where he's going.

I don't see what the big deal is. There's nothing new or controversial about people getting an education in prison. If it's online, then it's unlikely that sone non-murderer got bumped to make room for him.
