"The artist, Andy Goldsworthy, has placed several arches in spots around the globe, but the Striding Arches — three of them — on the hilltops just north of Moniaive you could say are closest to his Scottish heart."

Nina goes to Scotland and tracks down the arches.

At the link, in addition to Goldsworthy arches, archetypal sheep and (in the last photograph) a perfectly idealized farmer.

Goldsworthy is a genius. I highly recommend the documentary Rivers and Tides.

I love her travel blogs and thank you, Althouse, for posting them. She should learn that paper comes from trees that would not exist were it not for paper. Scots have tree farms just like in the U.S. Ugly after clear cutting but not environmental disasters.

I visit Scotland at least once a year and her narrow lane experience is one every American behind the wheel has to confront.

"But at the top -- the views are simply sublime! And the clouds do not stand in the way of the panorama!" This just ignores the ugly Wind Generators. Ruins the entire picture.

The arches are reminiscent of slabs of peat.

Thank you Nina.

I really do like that post. That's what travel blogging ought to look like, and some work must go into it.

I read her post about Scotland, and got sidetracked wondering what her NYCity link was about. As it happens, it was a trip to NYCity in 2010 with Ed, who was a party to an estate dispute that was being tried apparently in Surrogate's Court. She doesn't get specific, just a reference to a will and a trust, but along the way she has a running commentary on the first city in America she lived in. Nina has a great eye, and a lively interest in the locals wherever she goes. Always fun to read her stuff.

Is it art or littering?

Two people I love from afar: Goldsworthy and Nina!

Many thanks for the comments.
It's a curious thing, those windmills: I think they look beautiful from afar. I do understand the NIMBY issues, but here, I see them on hilltops and I see them in the sea and they just look... majestic!
