"Lawyers for Reed College have fired back at a former student who has accused the school of wrongly kicking him out and falsely labeling him a sex offender."

"The school alleges that even before 'John Doe'... filed his lawsuit last month, he admitted that he used cocaine, violated Reed's honor principle, provided alcohol, Xanax and ecstasy to other students (to be the 'cool friend who facilitates a fun night'), made vile statements to his ex-girlfriend accuser and retained a sexually explicit video of her on his cellphone until Reed ordered him to delete it...."
Doe accuses [another student, "Jane Roe"] of lying to school officials about their consensual relationship and he alleges that The Reed Institute - better known as Reed College - railroaded him through a disciplinary process intended only to expel him.

He maintains that he and Roe dated and later engaged in group sex with other young women, sometimes under the influence of ecstasy, a psychoactive drug better known as "Molly." But, he alleges, things blew up when he broke up with Roe and she later punched him in the face and went to school officials, telling them she didn't consent to one of their evenings of group sex.
Reed takes the position that "ingesting impairing substances renders consent void."

So did John Doe ingest impairing substances? If so, is the school treating Jane Roe as a rapist too?

There is the sexist assumption that, when it comes to sex, men are takers, and women are taken from.

As with most sexist assumptions, it is largely true.

The better question is why bother to have college classes which seem only to be a front for a destructive four year Orgy Club that the school runs for profit.

Reed's statement sounds more like character assassination than a legal argument.

There doesn't appear to be any "character" to assassinate.

Men should understand, that in the eyes of the law, all bad things about sex are the mans fault. A woman cannot be responsible for any type of sex that is unnatural.

I've escorted many a man to the brig, and they always cried, but she admitted it also! Just as the iron door clanged shut.

It's just irrelevant, you know...

This guy is a douchebag.

But he still gets to have rights.

Not every co-ed who claims to have been raped has actually been raped, and not every man who claims to have been falsely accused of rape has actually been falsely accused. But it seems to me that if the young woman willingly went along with the drugs and group sex on multiple occasions, as is alleged, that she should also be expelled as an undesirable student.

That's because some young women who have been called sluts really are sluts.

So she took Molly too? Why isn't she a sex offender?

And Jane Roe punched him in the face?

To what point did the group sex progress that she finally thought it had gone too far? Tag team? Bukkake? Group Felching? Golden Showers? Daisy Chain Analingus? DVDA? The Human Centipede?

Because it matters. You know: Big Picture. Clear some things up.

What, they should be consistent and even-handed in requiring consent from both parties?

Equal justice demands treating women as needing special protection.

Everyone knows a man ingesting impairing substances is not actually impaired.

Etienne said...

Laws are designed to root out the victim, and when it comes to sex, women are always the victim.

Prostitution and fornicating with a minor being the exceptions.

New laws to encompass people in positions of authority, regardless of sex. But generally, men are screwed if their sexual appetite is greater than that provided by their state-licensed spouse.

I probably should just use Occam's Razor.

Group sex: he spent too much time banging another chick than banging her.

Jealousy.

That is why -- when participating in group sex -- it is good to keep an egg-timer handy. Equal time for everyone. The fat chick gets her sex, too.

I am Laslo.

It can't possibly be against the rules at Reed to do drugs; drugs are all they do at Reed. I can't believe the school cares about that aspect of this.

60's and 70's college coeds were strong tough women compared to the coeds of academia today. It was a pleasure to have grown up and old with them. I feel sorry for todays' male college student. Poor bastards.

How careless of me: I forgot to mention the possibility of ATM. For some chicks that breaks up the party real fast.

And you base that accusation on...what? Reed's statement?

I had a medical school classmate who had graduated from Reed, He was pretty weird. He had a fetus in a jar of formaldehyde that he said was his twin brother.

That was even before the drug culture era. Sounds like Reed hasn't changed.

Scratch that off the bucket list, and move on. Because that liberal arts degree isn't worth the paper on which it is written.

If it was group sex, were the other women or men charged with rape as well???

rcocean said...

No sympathy for him - he knew the rules, now he pays the price.

Next time, get the consent in writing. And another one the day after. Just consider written consent a judicial condom.

Roe, Roe!!

Reed's new marketing campaign that confirms every stereotype the world has ever had about the college is just awesome! All that and constant drizzle? Where do I sign?

I predict applications will double.

And if they aren't, wouldn't that be a blatant Title IX violation?

Reed's statement sounds more like character assassination than a legal argument.

Why was HE alone expelled when OTHERS were engaging in identical activities?

Consent in writing does you no good if the school considers the consent void. You need her signed consent plus her toxicology report. All notarized to prove that the consent was given at the same time the blood was drawn.

rcocean said...

"Consent in writing does you no good if the school considers the consent void."

Well then, maybe the students at Reed should consider Whores. They can afford it after all.

rcocean said...

Actually wouldn't whores solve the entire problem of sex - sorry rape -on campus?

Just stock up a whore house at Reed, and declare any sex of any kind with the Co-eds off limits.

No more "rape". Problem solved.

Sebastian said...

"Actually wouldn't whores solve the entire problem of sex"

Applies beyond college.

Any exchange of money implies mutual consent.

Won't be long until prostitution will seem the honorable alternative to normal demeaning exploitative sex.

William said...

This is literally a cluster fuck. I don't see how it's even possible to apportion blame in a cluster fuck.......Can't they expel both students for excessive venality or borderline depravity or some offense that doesn't label one of the parties--and one only--as a sexual offender. You can be sexually offensive without being a sexual offender......What's worse? Going to an orgy and having fun or going to an orgy and having an awful time.

If you’ve ever had sex while stoned, then you know it can be quite an experience. It’s almost otherworldly in the way it makes you relax and intensifies sensations. If your partner is stoned, too, it can really make you feel connected and on the same page, emotionally and sexually. - Bustle

What an odd way to describe rape.

tim in vermont said...

We used to joke that the college put whorehouses out of business in our little college town. Now they are likely to be more like Navy bases. Maybe college girls can earn tuition and college boys can avoid the hell that the occasional, and very rare, as we all know, emotionally unstable coed can wreak.

"Reed takes the position that "ingesting impairing substances renders consent void."

Wow. Drinking and screwing will soon be a crime like drinking and driving. People are going to have to have breathalyzers in their bedrooms. Women can wear chastity belts with ignition interlock devises to get their pants off.

Colleges have actually become the stupidest institutions in the US.

There are two types of lubricants involved in sex. Alcohol and the water based kind.

Married men know to keep a supply of both on hand. Pun intended.

Drug use?

At Reed?

This is incomprehensible!

(For those who don't live in Portland, Reed is known as being awash in interesting pharmaceuticals.

And serious academic work, but also lots and lots of drugs.)

In a link to an earlier article, you will see that Doe's lawsuit claims Roe was the bisexual aggressor in their threesomes. Doe then made the mistake of dumping Roe for one of their playmates. Wackiness followed.

Seriously, a kid in my class graduated a year early, went off to Reed, and came back for a visit home w/ a Reed College t-shirt with the fictitious motto "drugs, sex and atheism". Word was that after he went back, he disappeared into the drug subculture never to be seen again.

Mountain Maven said...

Was Doe brought up on criminal charges?
No? Then Reed should lose the civil suit against them. They are using the same tactics as are used against rape victims, assailing their character.

Not surprised, Reed is an uber leftist college and only a fool would go there, particularly a man.

Mitch H, my neighbor went to Reed, and his wife told me once that his old friends were now either (i) quirky and brilliant - perhaps physics professors, (ii) living under bridges, or (iii) dead. That doesn't sound like a gamble I want my kids taking with my money and their lives.
