At the Aaron Rodgers Café...

... you can talk about the big game.

And watch this ad featuring British comedian Tom Wrigglesworth, who looks a lot like Aaron Rodgers:

IN THE COMMENTS: Ctmom4 said: "Did you hear the New York Bozo call? I like him even better now. Go Pack!"

Rodgers, interviewed after the game, said he had no idea what that meant, but here's a story that suggests it refers to Chris Christie:
On second-and-2 on the Green Bay Packers' opening drive on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, quarterback Aaron Rodgers called out an audible that — best guess — had a funny little double meaning.

"New York Bozo! New York Bozo!" Rodgers shouted as he scanned over the defense.

Hmm, let's see ... who is the most talked-about guest of a certain Cowboys owner? Yes, we imagine this was the Packers' response to New Jersey governor Chris Christie and his infamous red sweater being pals with Jerry Jones and a guest at the divisional playoff game at Lambeau Field, as well as several other big games this season dating back to Thanksgiving.

Yes, New Jersey is not New York, but it's one fewer syllable. Same difference in some folks' minds, maybe in all Wisconsinites' minds Sunday.
ADDED: Twitchy seems sure it refers to De Blasio. Anyway, watch it yourself. Click the speaker icon in the lower right corner to unmute.

What game"

I've got a bad feeling about this game. Dallas will be coming after Rodgers (the real one).

I second David's sentiments. The NFL is an entertainment I care not for. Cookie cutter teams with cookie cutter players with cookie cutter uniforms. Homogenized mayhem in our modern day coliseums. No thank you. Think I'll walk across the river to an Argentinian Tango ensemble and hope they have dancers. They're the best part! Then I'll finish my rendering of the USS Wabash 1862 for the Beaufort, SC Arsenal Museum this evening. Enjoy the NFL spectacle. Who's playing?

Addendum@David - is your profile picture of a street in Richmond circa 1865?

I've never been a Cowboys but fan but I am hoping they win today.

Why? I don't know; it just feels right.

The big game was last night...and the Seahawks dominated again!

I'm actually rooting for the Packers today, because I think the Cowboys have a better chance at beating the Seahawks.

chillblaine said...

I'll take the Packers to win but the Cowboys cover the six point spread. I understand the over/under is 52.5, I'll take the over.

That is what the Amazon portal is for, right?

Lots of Ice Bowl retrospective this week, especially with the passing of Jethro Pugh. Good to hear the voices of Bob Lilly and Lee Roy Jordan again.

Danny White interviewed on radio this week said he remembers his calf injuries and that Rodgers' discomfort/mobility might be worse than the Packers are letting on.

We'll see.

We hope the Doc pumped Aaron up.

I could say "again", but twice on the road in the same season would be tough.

"Never underestimate the refs taking over a game for Dallas."

Dallas shouldn't even be playing in this game.

I assume by "big game" you mean tomorrow's Ohio State-Oregon game. I expect OSU to lose (but I expected them to lose last time) and I expect to be pissed off at how late I have to stay up to watch it (just as I was pissed off last time).

Original Mike said...

Rodgers passing is way off.

Michael K said...

Rogers and his center need better communication. It resulted in a turnover.

Go Seahawks.!

The refs sure blew the coverage on that 3rd-&-7 to Witten.

On Wednesday, Obama will fly in to give a speech proposing new steps to increase access to affordable, high-speed broadband across the country, a White House official told The Des Moines Register on Saturday morning.

Great, the Affordable Internet Act.

""Never underestimate the refs taking over a game for Dallas."

I think you're onto something. That first down call (which they changed upon review) was absurd.

I think you're onto something.

So was that catch awarded to Cobb for picking it up off the ground.

They're called "public libraries".

I'd like to see the Seahawks go back to the Superbowl this year.

Every Seahawk fan says they'd rather we play Green Bay than Cowboys, but I'd rather see the Cowboys come to Seattle.

J.J. Watt for MVP.

When the quarterback throws a pass to nowhere with his eyes closed, pass interference should not be called.

It is kind of funny that it's always a conspiracy with garage unless his side is winning.

A game of injured QB's now.

Yup, the refs let Dallas seal the right side on Murray's.setup run.

That's a case where following the law led to injustice.

Still and all, America's Team won.

GB Wins

traditionalguy said...

Walker proxy defeats Christie proxy. Will miracles never cease.

Guildofcannonballs said...

Look the Cowboys won a playoff game so of course they cheated. You don't simply win a playoff game once every decade without mass conspiracy and cheating on a scale incomprehensible to most here now.

Big Mike said...

Terrible reversal on Des Bryant's catch on the one yard line. Just terrible.

Titus said...

Congrats Wisconsin.

Next week Seattle will crush you.

campy said...

Obvious reversal. I can't imagine how the ref watching didn't wave it off immediately.

SteveR said...

Never underestimate the refs taking over a game for Dallas.

garage's idiocy (surprise-not) stands for all the conspiracy blather which peaked after last week. Gee what good comes from one game, if you're going that route, you would carry it forward? You have plenty of chances during a game to eliminate the impact of the officials. Detroit did last week and Dallas did this week.

Patrick said...

No easy games left .

tim in vermont said...

It may have been an "obvious reversal" and I was rooting for GB, BTW, but it was also a catch, by any common sense definition. It didn't look like justice.

But then again, the rule that the Pats exploited yesterday probably should not be in the book either, but it was, and I will take the win.

furious_a said...

Looked like Bryant took three steps with control of the ball before losing it. Whatever.

Well played GB, esp. Cobb. Please beat Seattle.

Ann Althouse said...

That was amusing!

Original Mike said...

New York Bozo!
New York Bozo!

Bob Ellison said...

I agree with tim in Vermont: that was a catch. That means the solution is a change in the rulebook. It's silly to say he didn't "catch" that ball.

furious_a said...

OTOH, Gov. Walker gets to keep tweeting and making Garage's head explode.

Original Mike said...

That should be a catch. I couldn't believe McCarthy challenged it. Good thing he knows the rules better than I do.

Virgil Hilts said...

It is possible it was not a catch. I understand the rule. However, it is only not a catch if the ball actually hit the ground. Watch the gif again and again. http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/1/11/7528695/refs-correctly-overturn-dez-bryants-incredible-catch

It is possible the ball hit the ground but I do not believe there is incontrovertible proof that the ball ever really hit the ground; look's like DB's hand may stay underneath it. Since DB did not go out of bounds, if it was not initially a catch then it was when DB reestablished control in the end zone. I think the replay officials blew it by not focusing on whether there was incontrovertible proof that the ball hit the ground.

Phil 314 said...

I only care about the Broncos now

Virgil Hilts said...

More and more people are now picking up on the issue of whether the ball even hit the ground. I do not think it did (though I thought it did when I was watching the game). Not sure that the refs ever got the view from the end zone that is now suggesting that DB kept the ball from hitting the ground. http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=560094\

campy said...

Bryant didn't take any "steps" that I saw. He jumped to grab the ball; his feet came down one after the other; one foot came up & down again as he twisted during his fall; and finally the ball came loose as he hit the ground. That's no catch.

(My alma mater had a similar call go against them in their bowl game loss last month.)

Virgil Hilts said...

Never mind. There's a video from a different angle now showing the ball touching the ground.

furious_a said...

Jeebus campy, give it up. I conceded the call and congratted GB.

campy said...

Well, aren't you special!

campy said...

I figured the New York Bozo was former Jets coach Rex Ryan.

james conrad said...

The thing is, Aaron Rogers can't beat Seattle on 1 leg, having a bad wheel in the playoffs sucks for GB.

james conrad said...

Gee Wiz guys, it was NOT a completion, at least not a legal catch under the rules today. Almost don't count with instant replay, the ball clearly touched the ground before he had possession.

Surfed--

Good eye. My photo is from 1865, but it's Charleston not Richmond. They looked a lot alike by war's end. A little lesson in humility.

Actually I was kidding about "what game?" Watched the whole damn wonderful thing.

tim in vermont said...

New York Bozo. Yeah, it has to be Christie on grounds of either true, or "fake but accurate."

That is one hand rule of logic the liberals came up with, that "fake but accurate."

David said...

Apparently Bryant's catch was not a legal catch under the rules, but it was a hell of a play. I actually like Bryant. His heart is always on his sleeve.

And Russell Cobb? Wow, that was a catch!

When I was a little older than Rogers is now, I had the same injury he has. It was amazingly slow to heal, always painful and could turn debilitating in an instant. Quite a nice job by Whitey Weirdo (my nickname for Rogers, who is a bit wacky) under the circumstances.

David said...

Lotsa lawyers on this blog. Here is the full text of the rule.

"If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete."

Blah blah blah, rules, rulings, technicalities etc. The Packers won, and by definition justice is done.

I married into a Packers family 35 years ago. It's like the mafia, once you're in you can never leave. There is nothing like it in the world of professional sports. And as an Iowan, I appreciate that the Packers change quarterbacks about as often as Iowa changes governors (every quarter-century or so.)

My father-in-law was on the waiting list for a long time, then finally got a chance to buy tickets just shortly before Brett Favre arrived in town. We figure it was divine intervention.

I have been watching football all weekend.

I am such a guy.

My hubby is playing with the rare clumber.

Internationals hate American football.

Denver is a mess. Indy isn't great either.

I sense a very blue state super bowl.

Why don't gross states have pro sports teams?

Unknown said...

Two questions:

Does the special dispensation for the legendary franchise in Green Bay also extend to exempt Aaron Rodgers from peeing in a cup after that remarkable physical change in his second half performance?

Will a refs intervention be seen in Seattle when a pass interference and pass catch call serves poetic justice on the whiney weirdo?

When my oldest child was an infant he had a bad case of chronc colic. I discovered that if drove while holding him on the steering wheel and drove (well before mandatory seat belt laws), the vibrations apparently did something to calm his stomach. I first heard Dr. Ruth (the sex therapist) driving on country roads at 2:00 a.m. Today I found out that Dr. Ruth was trained as a sniper when she lived in Israel, and could assemble a submachine gun blindfolded.
