African Crested Porcupine. Half their defense strategy is being elusive. I've seen signs of them- tracks, a quill here or there, but never saw a live one.
Those lions are smarter than my brothers dog, who set the world record for consecutive porcupine attacks at three in one day. The first two weren't too bad, just a couple of quills to pull. For the third, it took two of us to lay on her, while a third pulled quills with a pair of pliers.
Maybe the cubs know, by instinct (?) or by the pride elders indicating it in some way, that porcupines are best avoided as prey. A mouth full of porcupine quills means a slow death by starvation for the lion who messes with one.

The last Republican in a blue state.
Great ad for the NRA and the Second Amendment. The quills are open carry on display.
Sounds like Walker.
Who are you to say what is and isn't a metaphor, Althouse?
I saw Lone Porcupine open for John Cougar Mellencamp. Great show.
Better title: Porcupine entertains dumb-ass lion cubs
Mama lioness had nothing to do with the porcupine. Perhaps she knows better.
Hooray for the rodent!
Porcupine motto: Don't Tread On Me.

Trackers rarely if ever see them either.
They're actually relatively easy to grab, or kill if you're so inclined.
Fortunately he has the cooperation of a complicit animal media to overstate his invincibility.

The bright lights cause the lions to become aware of the camera man. They attack and devour him. Metaphor for the media in certain locales.
Just goes to show: nobody likes to deal with a real prick.
I think you need a "this is not a metaphor" or maybe "is this a metaphor" or "metaphor?" tag
i remember a nat geo article from the 80 showing an old male that had learned to eat them by reaching under them.
