Most-liked comment at the WaPo article "Glenn Beck’s dramatic revelation: He’s been hiding a mysterious brain illness."

"As a physician, this is all medical gibberish which possibly explains his commentary and views. He needs a psychiatrist more than all the unspecified treatments and experimental therapies mentioned. He displays features of psychosis."

Second-most-liked: "'Glenn Beck reveals he's been hiding a mysterious brain illness.' He didn't do a very good job of hiding it."

Third: "Beck suffers from CFD, or cranial fecal disorder...."

He says that doctors told him he hasn't had REM sleep in a decade.

Odd, that.

I notice he kept publishing books through this period. Not sure how that works when your brain is barely operating as he claims, unless he signed his name on someone else's work.

Here come all the nasty comments about Glenn Beck. You may not agree with him, but he has been completely right about a lot of things that are happening, and predicted a lot of things such as the Caliphate which he got laughed at when he brought up. Funny how our President can come out and say he "just read in the paper" and people think he is so smart. Watch the show, and he will explain "how" he got so much done without REM sleep.

Glenn Beck is hugely creative in an area of public life that punishes those who don't conform. He is a family man of good character. To see the vicious sheep of the progressive WaPo commentariat respond to Beck's misfortune with ad hominem attacks is just plain sad.

The big question now: Which television talking head is going to be the first to make some ugly comment about Beck that they will have to walk back? The obvious pick would have been Joy Behar, but she's not on The View anymore. I'm betting it will be some airhead infobabe on CNN.

Or mentally ill I guess.

Odd, there's a few leftists that I've wanted to step into a ring with, but I can't remember being happy one of them had an illness, or wished one were dead before their time.

sick fuckers

The comments and attitude behind them are reprehensible, but the illness he describes is neither medically recognized nor a brain disorder. The doctors treating him are probably quacks (unless he is misunderstanding and misreporting this.)

It's frustrating though because there are symptoms and syndromes about which we have limited understanding and instead of acknowledging that, most physicians blow off their patients' concerns.

Me, just one. Ted Kennedy. I'm glad he died, I hope it was painful. But the difference is not for his politics.

If Beck were a leftie, he'd be lionized for the struggles he's been through in his life. Alcoholism, his mother's suicide, illness.

Personally, I do think he has some mild form of bipolar disorder.

Chiropractic neurology is quackery.

With all the fancy-looking machines and devices, all they're doing is making the patient feel better (placebo effect) that someone has something advanced to treat them with.

Glenn Beck's own description of his symptoms sounds like something requiring psychiatric intervention.

http://www.politico.com/story/2014/11/glenn-beck-illness-sick-112769.html?hp=l3_4

Compare to:

http://www.adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/panic-disorder-agoraphobia/symptoms

I don't hate the guy or care about him one way or the other. I just hate to see someone eschew legitimate psychiatric treatment for chiropractic quackery.

What a thing to live through! And to not know what was wrong -- other than the certainty that something was wrong. (It does make you an easy mark for Doctor Quackery).

Glad to read he's back in a healthy lane.

Heck, just the only sleeping for a couple hours a night for years at a time could probably do a lot of that to you.

When you're young, you can abuse your body like that. As you age, it catches up. And as a mormon, he couldn't even caffienate to compensate.

When you don't sleep, everything falls apart.

Beck is a good man who was right about so much that the democrat party members had to target him for elimination. Progressive democrats are vicious, vehemently ignorant hypocrites. Glenn Beck organized a massive public event in support of fatherhood, family, and country. It was completely apolitical. Puke Jon Stewart and his progressive fellow travelers felt so threatened by Beck's success that he countered with an event of his own that was completely political and hyper-partisan, a progressive Nuremberg rally that culminated with the introduction of Yusef Salaam, who advocated for the murder of Salman Rushdie, to lead the audience in singing "Peace Train".

Beck has been open about the fact that he has ADHD, alcoholism (though he's now been sober for quite some time) and a family history of severe mental health issues. So we've known for a long time that something is wrong, or at least atypical, with his brain. I am saddened to see that his suffering has gotten worse, and that he's fallen for this chiropractic neurology scam. Lots of alcoholics experience these symptoms as they age as a direct result of their past substance abuse, but real neurologists are making strides to better understand and treat them. Lots of people with ADHD experience these symptoms with age, with some of it connected to stimulant use* and some just due to the way our brains are. Again, real neurologists are making progress for these patients. I hope Beck is able to get some real help.

*I don't know if Beck ever used stimulants to control his ADHD, and I'm not saying stimulants should be avoided. I personally use them for my own ADHD but I don't pretend that there aren't potential risks.

I actually have some experience with a related "Brain Center", Robert Milello's Brain Balance Center chain. Milello and Carrick are both chiropractors and coauthored papers together and at one point Carrick was one of the testimonials for something related to Brain Balance. Brain Balance uses a grab bag of actual proven physical/occupational therapy techniques, weird quackery, and plain old exercise, fun and positive reinforcement to "cure" kids of behavioral problems, ADHD, dyslexia, learning disabilities and --- get this --- allergies. It "works" to some extent with ADHD and behavior problems because of the exercise, PT/OT techniques, and plain old positive attention from a kind adult, but it costs a good deal more than a real, qualified therapist and a nice karate or tumbling class, which would do as much good or more.

Why do people care so much about Glenn Beck. If you don't like him, ignore him and whatever he says.

Hate on someone like Obama who can really change how you live your life. Beck can not do anything that will change anything about how you move through your day.

God bless, you pathetic haters!

Glen is an interesting man and an original thinker. His early outing of Van Jones was prescient. Since then, the Obama admin has proved to be a black panther style gangster government, complete with Islamist leanings. His study of the 'progressive' political movement in the USA is quite good. Having said all that, GB has always had a kind of crazy look in his eyes- still does. I remember thinking back in 2009, while he was appearing on FOX, "I hope he can hold it together" as he was valuable, original, and influential commentator for conservatives. From a medical point of view, it sounds most like some form of manic-depression.

acm said...

Whoops, I misspelled the other chiropractors name. It's Robert Melillo, not Milello.

The WaPo readers are mostly like that. I read the comments after a George Will piece, for example. Most of them are in that tone. After all, the WaPo is the house organ for federal employees.

How many people, when thinking of the black vote, for another example, consider that about half the black middle class are federal employees ?

Republicans are really swimming upstream in trying to convert the black middle class to real economics. We would do better with the ambitious lower class where vouchers are a big potential issue. The teachers' unions and the black lower classes are enemies.

"Conservatives think liberals are wrong, liberals think conservatives are evil." (6:58)

I think that was from Krauthammer and it's "...liberals are stupid." Since he is a psychiatrist, I assume he has scaled down from "mentally ill" to "stupid," to avoid being accused of a mass diagnosis, even if it is warranted.

Beck has likely been in pain all the way to the bank. Given that covetousness is part and parcel of lefty ideology, they probably hate him for that too.

Yep. But again not because of his politics. Because he allowed a woman to suffocate to her death. And tried his best to cover it up. Because it would hurt his political opportunities.

He is vermin. And a murderer. But that of course does not disqualify him from the Democratic Party.

Most people who are denied REM sleep breakdown. Most, not all. Sleep studies from the 1960's showed a normal distribution. A few data at the extremes showed no critical need of REM sleep.

In a few more years we will have a Republican President. When that happens, Beck will criticize the President just as he does now with King Putt.

Then the lefties will love him.
