White people loved “The Cosby Show,” especially liberal white people. They loved it ... because it offered a warm vision of a world in which shared experience might help Americans of all colors to see past racial divisions and instead focus on the places where they connected...By the way, I never watched "The Cosby Show." I just didn't watch network sitcoms in that period of my life. I did, however, watch "The Bill Cosby Show" — which was on around 1969, when I did watch plenty of sitcoms. It predictably hit a note of sentimentality that made me cry. Cosby played a phys-ed teacher in L.A., and something about the way he helped kids always tear-jerked me. Maybe I saw Episode 5, "Rules Is Rules": "Chet goes to great lengths to obtain a valve needle which he needs in order to inflate basketballs for his gym class." I'm sure I saw Episode 4, "A Girl Named Punkin." Here, this is the sort of thing that really got to me when I was 18:
Any suggestion that white people were culpable in the history of racism that the show addressed mostly through reference to mid-twentieth-century activism. White audiences were never made to feel bad about themselves....
[A] decade after “The Cosby Show” went off the air... the comedian embarked on a speaking tour in which he told black audiences that the kinds of hardships they faced were of their own making.... Here was the white blamelessness that made his television such a balm to white audiences, writ all too real. It was an approach that earned him sharp criticism from some black critics like Dyson and Coates....
ADDED: You know, Rush Limbaugh, who is exactly the same age as I am, had a beloved cat named Punkin. Perhaps, like me, he was moved by that episode about a painfully withdrawn girl who learns about love from Bill Cosby.

Editorial writers everywhere jump to name reasons why the individuals in the black community can not, as a whole, be responsible for their own destiny.
If the accusations against Cosby are true, I'll be both disgusted with him and sorry that his good message to the community will be dismissed.
Personally I will withhold judging Bill Cosby at the present time. I've seen enough innocent people destroyed by these rush to judegements.
Why would her students have known who Bill Cosby was? The Cosby Show was off the air before they were born.
He's not Will Smith.
How was it possible?
Well until now the media never saw fit to have a feeding frenzy over allegations that had been hinted at for years, and which I will bet were common knowledge in the show biz world.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had a teen age son with his house keeper, but managed to keep that suppressed until practically the day after he left office. Can't imagine the behind the scenes effort that took.
Steve sailor has pointed out that a girl claiming to be Cos ' daughter got a prison sentence for blackmail. Again, can you imagine what was going on behind the scenes?
...Any suggestion that white people were culpable in the history of racism
Which white people? Not this one. Plus plenty of black people were culpable in the history of racism, as in selling their enemies as slaves. Oddly enough, I never blamed any of my black friends.
Liberals, they crack me up.
Bill Clinton was accused of rape by multiple women as well. He actually settled a couple cases. Let's see who is remembered and treated more favorably.
I honestly haven't been following this story. Are the accusations of rape credible? Are they "rape-rape?"
Frankly, in an atmosphere of campus rape allegations that frequently spurious, my attitude has become somewhat less, shall we say, fervent. I still feel rapists should be castrated; I just think they should be guilty of something before it happens.
How?
Easy enough. Famous people get accused of incendiary things all the damn time. Nobody beyond the tabloids usually bothers with giving the accusations any attention unless there's a) evidence beyond the testimony of the accusers, or b) ideological capital to be made out of deciding to believe them.
There is, of course, no more (or less) hard evidence against Cosby now than there was twenty years ago. But there's now ideological capital to be made out of believing them, so . . .
Is it systemic racism, structural imposition of inequality of opportunity, or both that caused Cosby to rape these women?
Or is Bill Cosby responsible for Bill Cosby's actions?
White liberal, Bill Clinton, accused of Rape of numerous women. People LOVE him. Bill Cosby, black conservative accused of Rape of numerous women. People want him gone.
I'm a little surprised this digital lynch mob hasn't been confronted with the fact that their actions (attacking and harming Coz) are de facto racist, in that they're going after a black man in ways they wouldn't/haven't gone after white men and that the allegations against him follow well-worn historical racist lines, ie an oversexed black man preying on defenseless women. I mean, that's kinda ugly, right? I wonder what could possibly explain why it's not seen as ugly?
wendybar,
"White liberal, Bill Clinton, accused of Rape of numerous women. People LOVE him."
Because they saw the hands of the Right all over his persecution. They saw the hunt and the kill - and they won't play along with it.
"Bill Cosby, black conservative accused of Rape of numerous women. People want him gone."
Not a FOX News conservative - let's first make sure that's included: he hates you - but one who has shamed us, on his own, with no outside effort from the Left or Right.
Big difference,...
Ironically, I think she's right in that much/a fair amount of what's wrong in Urban Black Culture is the fault of white people.
It's just that I think it's the fault of white people like her, starting in the late 60s or so; this is one case where the boring Standard Conservative Critique holds a lot of weight.
Not Endemic White Racism, or The Lingering Effects Of Slavery (which somehow doesn't keep new immigrants down, but that doesn't count because shut up).
"White liberal, Bill Clinton, accused of Rape of numerous women. People LOVE him. Bill Cosby, black conservative accused of Rape of numerous women. People want him gone."
Much as I love Cos and can't stand Clinton, these aren't really apples to apples. While Cos spoke some useful truths to the black community, and some morons and race baiters on the left got pissed over it, he remained pretty beloved even among the Left (and certainly with the rest of the country). The problem for him now is that so many different people are accusing him. If they're all lying, it's a pretty wide conspiracy. Though I'm withholding judgment for now--I don't think this can be proved either way.
Clinton of course is a scumbag, molested and harassed a number of women, and possibly raped one. He is beloved by the Left because they really don't have any heroic presidents anymore, and have taken the fact that his tenure was relatively peaceful and prosperous that it must have been due to some unseen magic he was doing.
"Because they saw the hands of the Right all over his persecution."
Ok, good, so we're in agreement--the most craven people on the Left have decided that it doesn't matter if someone is guilty or innocent, all that matters is to oppose whatever the Right is saying.
Gee, as a white guy, I thought the Cosby show was a message to black kids that they could become doctors ans lawyers and such.
It disgusted me, just like any "nice family" show because I did not believe those kind of families existed in real life, of any race.
Why is Crack still posting here?
Nobody cares what he has to say as the dems have definitely decided to "move on" from blacks to their newest and dearest love, hispanics.
Sorry Crack.
As Mario Van Peebles explained in Heartbreak Ridge: "This is all a question of mind over matter.
We no longer mind because you no longer matter."
I just hope you can clean up your act and become a properly articulate person with no negro dialect.
(our democrat superiors say its okay to say that)
The Nancy Pelosi Show also had an episode titled "Rules Is Rules", where she did away with the school's wheelchair basketball team.
HoodlumDoodlum,
"I'm a little surprised this digital lynch mob hasn't been confronted with the fact that their actions (attacking and harming Coz) are de facto racist, in that they're going after a black man in ways they wouldn't/haven't gone after white men and that the allegations against him follow well-worn historical racist lines, ie an oversexed black man preying on defenseless women. Your historical understanding of American racial and symbolism is about as weak as it is malicious.
White people really ought to give up on the whole "gotcha" approach to racial questions because it'll only hurt white people:
You guys haven't delved deep enough into the subject matter, to actually matter, when you do so.
You just look stupid,...
"It's just that I think it's the fault of white people like her, starting in the late 60s or so; this is one case where the boring Standard Conservative Critique holds a lot of weight."
One of the worst dangers to black people is the whites who think they're their allies. Most efforts from the Left in the past half century have ensured that blacks might succeed despite these efforts, but not because of them.
FullMoon: "Gee, as a white guy, I thought the Cosby show was a message to black kids that they could become doctors ans lawyers and such."
Well, yeah. Of course it was.
Unfortunately, becoming a doctor or lawyer or such is just "actin' white". So that's a bad thing.
Sigivald,
"It's just that I think it's the fault of white people like her, starting in the late 60s or so; this is one case where the boring Standard Conservative Critique holds a lot of weight."
Then why are there identical white critiques, from the 30s and even before, about blacks?
That's where (and why) "the boring Standard Conservative Critique" falls apart.
Plus they'll never entertain the idea that your perfect selves - lying as you're doing here - could be part of the problem.
You just can't let go of white supremacy's lies,...
Brando,
"Ok, good, so we're in agreement--the most craven people on the Left have decided that it doesn't matter if someone is guilty or innocent, all that matters is to oppose whatever the Right is saying."
Wow - what a weird interpretation of what I wrote. No, we are not in agreement.
The Right was seen as being as bad, or worse, than Bill Clinton.
That's the part you guys can't accept:
You're the scum.
I mean, when you're seen as lower than Bill Clinton,...
I think the saddest part of the coming further downfall of the black community due to obama's illegal alien (effectively) amnesty is the continued reduction of job opportunities for a black community that already has an unbelievably high unemployment rate.
Small price to pay for the dems I guess for an expected political payoff in higher vote totals.
I wonder if the fact that so many of Cosby's accusers are white women (and we know how bad they are thanks to certain resident posters!) will lead the black community to reimbrace Cosby and demand that society in general and the authorities/media gatekeepers in particular back off of Cosby's revenue streams?
The Crack is back!
I can't wait to hear his next predictions and why his predictions (Like Democrats are going to win the November elections) are always right, because past predictions were right.
People are responsible for their actions. I quoted Cosby's ideas on that subject to the Crack Emcee and he pushed back on the idea that Cosby's ideas have any special importance to black people. Now Cosby's critics are saying he should be held accountable for his actions. I agree--people are responsible for their actions. I like it when people agree with me.

By current college standards, you are now guilty of macro-aggression, slut shaming, victim shaming, not checking your privilege and being mean. I just hope you can live with yourself! ;)
eric,
"I can't wait to hear his next predictions and why his predictions (Like Democrats are going to win the November elections)"
I'm sure you have a link - or it's another white lie to smear a black man.
I know you're good for it,...
Cosby was always given a pass because his TV show embodied the White Liberals view of how normal educated black professional men act...just like saints.
The force was with the narrative. Today we have suddenly woke up and are immune to that narrative's power to see all educated black men as saints. We can thank Obama for that one.
Vox (Vox!) has a good summary of the accusations, in yellow-edged conciseness. Key fact:
...the rape allegations against Cosby have been public knowledge for nearly a decade, since Andrea Constand filed a 2005 lawsuit alleging that Cosby had drugged and sexually assaulted her.
For most people, I would think, 2005 is a decade or two after they stopped paying attention to Bill Cosby.
So one problem I have with the Vox writeup, as well as Rebecca Traister's cultural reckoning, is the question of who they accuse of overlooking Cosby's accusers?
Traister and Vox both revert to the first person plural.
Ignoring his accusers meant that we got to keep Cosby as a powerful cultural figure writes Vox.
So we didn’t truly allow ourselves to think about any of it writes Traister.
Who is this "we"? Vox, to its credit, leaves off such musings to focus more concretely on other cases and other patterns in which rape accusations were ignored. Traister, on the other hand, wants to bundle not just the entire culture, but the entire history of America into a single pronoun.
But before she gets there, Traister does some reporting:
He’s received an NAACP Image Award and the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Award; a year ago, Jon Stewart concluded an interview with Cosby by noting “This man is the best,” and this year, upon presenting him with a Lifetime Achievement Award, Chris Rock called him “the greatest comedian to ever live.”
Who is the "we" here? What industry may that be?
The problem I have with all of these decades old allegations is: How would Cosby prove the negative? That he did not rape or sexually assaulted any these woman?
He can't, none of us probably could. I think that is why you have not heard any comments from him yet - no matter what he says, he's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.
I thought it awfully strange that CNN would just now start bringing these allegations out as major news stories.
"More malicious than weak" is a endorsement I'll take, buddy.
Thank you for educating me, as well; now I know giving credence to sexual assault or rape allegations against a black man with little evidence is not in any way racist. I thought there was something a while back about a basketball player named Kobe, but probably that was before the rules changed. *The More You Know*
It's quite a mystery trying to understand how some weather scandals and others founder and sink. It helps if you're on the left, but it's no guarantee. Charley Chaplain went into exile, but Ted Kennedy became the lion of the Senate. Now that he's safely dead, Michael Jackson's talent is properly appreciated. Perhaps Bill Cosby will again become a comedy legend a generation after his death......I get the sense that he's probably guilty and that there are in Hollywood others who are guilty of worse crimes and that they will continue to prosper and thrive.
K in Colorado said...
The problem I have with all of these decades old allegations is: How would Cosby prove the negative?
He cannot, clearly.
Similarly to the "rape" charges being leveled at males on college campuses sometimes years after the fact.
traditionalguy,
"The force was with the narrative. Today we have suddenly woke up and are immune to that narrative's power to see all educated black men as saints. We can thank Obama for that one."
Yeah, the guy whites called "incompetent" because he didn't join them in panicking over the one confirmed case of ebola in this country.
Can whites even begin to comprehend how unfair their white supremacist viewpoint is?
Wait - dumb question,...
HD: " I thought there was something a while back about a basketball player named Kobe, but probably that was before the rules changed. *The More You Know*"
The rules really haven't changed.
The rules are clearly laid out and demarcated by the public political positions taken by the accused.
It's really all quite simple when you remember that.
I'm sure TNC could explain it better in 23,459 words. Possibly less.
Corollary to the rule that all educated black men are not saints is the need to get to know enough black men that you can learn how to tell the difference between saints and sinners.
Jim in St Louis,
"I want to know why Dr Cosby has not been questioned by the police. Or if they did question him why no charges."
One white DA said he really wanted to go after Cosby but - as Coates found - he simply didn't have the evidence.
It's the women speaking collectively, and the similarities to their stories, that's driving this,...
White guy Polanski has 30+ films; I wonder if those are still available on Netflix et al.? Oh well, he's foreign, probably doesn't count.
House of Cosbys could have cleared this up by just having a Date Rape Cosby
HoodlumDoodlum: "White guy Polanski has 30+ films; I wonder if those are still available on Netflix et al.? Oh well, he's foreign, probably doesn't count."
And still reliably on the left.
Plus, what is leaking out more and more about regarding underage child abuse in Hollywood means no one on the left really wants to pry that story open.
Narratives must be maintained.
traditionalguy,
"Corollary to the rule that all educated black men are not saints is the need to get to know enough black men that you can learn how to tell the difference between saints and sinners."
That's what we've been trying to tell whites all along, as they, instead, pick on people's fashion choices as a sign:
It was Hannibal Buress' whole point for mentioning Cosby in the first place,...
Hey Crack. You are as ever a strong prophet of justice, which brings you close to being a saint.
But attacking people for being raised where some of the elites once abused the privilege of northern European white settlers over others is not how to win friends and influence among white people today.
Really, if you cannot finally come to forgiving our ancestors for what some of them did to your ancestors, then changing your unforgiveness is the only problem that the living are able to help with.
Herman Cain, didn't he also have a problem with allegations of improper behavior towards women? I seem to remember that being pretty thoroughly investigated/vetted in the Media prior to some elections. Now John Edwards, on the other hand--seems like info about his personal behavior vis a vis women & fidelity, that came out after an election. Probably a coincidence.
Anyway I'll just add Herman Cain as a data point wherein goin' after a black man for alleged sexual misbehavior doesn't involve any racism, symbolic or otherwise. I am learnin'
The problem I have with all of these decades old allegations is: How would Cosby prove the negative? That he did not rape or sexually assaulted any these woman?
You can’t. These types of accusations are always problematic for exactly that reason. They can’t be proven one way or another.
his TV show embodied the White Liberals view of how normal educated black professional men act...just like saints.
I disagree. His show portrayed the family as a normal family. In my experience, that IS how black educated professionals act. They are neither saints nor sinners, but normal people with faults and foibles like anyone else.
This whole thing is a damn shame, but I feel bad for the other actors on the cosby show who might lose out on residuals because of things that may or may not have happened in the 70’s/80’s.
traditionalguy,
"If you cannot finally come to forgiving our ancestors for what some of them did to your ancestors, then changing your unforgiveness is the only problem that the living are able to help with."
Our ancestors aren't responsible for today's mass incarcerations. Our ancestors didn't redline our neighborhoods. Our ancestors aren't opposing reparations now.
And, if you want me to respect 1776 - with reverence - then you're going to have to start treating the slavery that was occurring at that time the same way.
Trying to wipe it away is one of the main crimes, your white supremacist ancestors handed down to you, that you seem happy to fulfill,...
Clinton of course is a scumbag, molested and harassed a number of women, and possibly raped one
Ronald Reagan was also accused of rape. Gipper the Ripper?
Traister is mis-characterizing Cosby's position.
He didn't portray white's as blameless. It was more of a "do what is right and quit using white blame as an excuse for not doing right" message. Racism doesn't stop you from raising the children you fathered.
I, like AA, never watched "The Cosby Show", but loved the "The Bill Cosby Show". I avoided all those cozy family sitcoms, regardless of the skin color of the family.
Of course, "I Spy" was even better. Or at least it seemed that way to this youngster.
Shanna,
"In my experience, that IS how black educated professionals act. They are neither saints nor sinners, but normal people with faults and foibles like anyone else."
But they don't live in houses like that - blacks who make $100,000 typically live in neighborhoods like whites making $30,000 - and, unlike the Huxtables, they (somehow) have problems with whites on a pretty regular basis.
Cosby sold a fantasy.
"This whole thing is a damn shame, but I feel bad for the other actors on the cosby show who might lose out on residuals because of things that may or may not have happened in the 70’s/80’s."
They happened - 15 women? With 6 willing to put their names on it? Against Bill Cosby? It happened.
It is a shame, but Bill should've thought of that a long time ago,..
Welcome back Crack! I missed your commentary.
crack: "It is a shame, but Bill should've thought of that a long time ago,.."
Apparently, not all "Bill's" are created equally.
lgv,
Traister is mis-characterizing Cosby's position.
He didn't portray white's as blameless."
Correct - Bill Cosby predicted racist whites would mis-characterize his position.
It's why Chris Rock stopped doing his famous "Black people vs. Niggers" routine:
Racist whites took it all wrong.
White people don't listen, but are looking for something to spin to their advantage.
Continuing committing their racism with every word and then denying it to our faces,...
Here's a helpful hint. Like a whole bunch of other miscreants Cosby did all the public good things so he got a pass on the bad things. Didn't hurt that he was a hugh rainmaker. But the deciding factor here was his skin color.
Or it's possible Ben Stein may have the answer.
"On the same day, several older women claimed that they had been raped by the brilliant comedian, Bill Cosby. One by one these older women claimed that Cosby had drugged them, then raped them — then drugged and raped them over and over again as they traveled around the country with him. They knew they had been raped, but they kept traveling around the country with him, getting drugged, getting raped over a course of years. Was this rape? Could it possibly be rape under any normal definition of rape? How can it be rape if the women kept coming back for more?"
@Crack, who's Chris Rock?
But they don't live in houses like that - blacks who make $100,000 typically live in neighborhoods like whites making $30,000
I would love to see an actual study on this. If you ever read the millionaire next door, many millionaires live in relatively inexpensive houses.
As for the Cosby Show itself, I chalk quite a bit of that up to tv, sitcoms never have realistic homes. Look at the apartments on shows like Friends. And the Cosby's on show were a doctor and lawyer in NY, so they had to have been making way more than 100k, even with inflation.
They happened - 15 women?
I absolutely think something happened that is not appropriate, I mentioned in the other thread. Drunk/drugged sex, power play casting couch stuff...nothing that makes Cosby look good.
But I hate accusations like this because anybody can come forward with no evidence at all, and there is basically no defense and no proof. So it sucks all around and I am not willing to say 'X happened' definitively when we have no proof, just accusations. Some of which are sketchy, like the ones that involved having a continuing relationship after a supposed rape. Anyway, just my two cents. FWIW.
Drag a hundred dollar bill through a comedy club and you'll be amazed what you find...
Crack said: But they don't live in houses like that
My next-door neighbors do. In fact, I'd say that their house, which they had built, is probably much larger and nicer than the Huxtables' (We live in the 'burbs, where land is cheap.)
Shanna said: His show portrayed the family as a normal family.
Yes. I grew up on the Cosby show, and I doubt that I ever thought of them as a "black" family - they were just a family.
Shanna,
"I would love to see an actual study on [blacks who make $100,000 typically live in neighborhoods like whites making $30,000]."
They've been done - check out the case for reparations. I think the link is there.
"If you ever read the millionaire next door, many millionaires live in relatively inexpensive houses."
But only blacks do under cultural force.
"As for the Cosby Show itself, I chalk quite a bit of that up to tv, sitcoms never have realistic homes."
Wait - you just said the Huxtables were your view of normal - so which is it? Real or a fantasy?
"Look at the apartments on shows like Friends."
White supremacy writ large.
"And the Cosby's on show were a doctor and lawyer in NY, so they had to have been making way more than 100k, even with inflation."
Lots of those running around, huh?
"I absolutely think something happened that is not appropriate, I mentioned in the other thread. Drunk/drugged sex, power play casting couch stuff...nothing that makes Cosby look good."
Just as his dissing of the poor didn't: everybody knew, then, something was wrong with the man. It was all too inconsistent to make up the guy we thought we knew.
"But I hate accusations like this because anybody can come forward with no evidence at all, and there is basically no defense and no proof."
No - first you have to get 15 people, with no hope of getting money or criminal charges filed, to take on one of the world's most powerful figures.
"So it sucks all around and I am not willing to say 'X happened' definitively when we have no proof, just accusations."
Hey - I said my wife killed three people with a quack doctor, and it was found to be true, but still many people don't believe me. (My wife was white and "nice" too.) The world is so weird, when it comes to ethics and morality, they're happy when I suffer and want her to be free.
Go figure.
"Some of which are sketchy, like the ones that involved having a continuing relationship after a supposed rape."
I've seen lots of examples now of how that can happen - and this is AFTER I thought the same thing. We have to be able to change.
"Anyway, just my two cents. FWIW."
It's worth it. You didn't say anything racist or embarrassing.
That's kinda new here,....
Lyssa,
"My next-door neighbors do."
O.K., so we got one - let's call it common then.
"Yes. I grew up on the Cosby show, and I doubt that I ever thought of them as a "black" family - they were just a family."
With exclusively black art on the walls, a huge anti-apartheid poster on Theo's door, and no white music ever playing anywhere.
Man, y'all can miss a lot.
BTW - NBC demanded Cosby take down the poster and he said apartheid may be topic of debate in Archie Bunker's house but not his. The poster stayed.
This is the "conservative" white American racists are claiming had "left the plantation".
I love that lie,...
The News about Cosby is shocking. I haven't heard the info before. Being in Germany, I don't have real access to the tabloids. It seems as though there's no proof, just the accusers' stories. But neither is there proof with the Priests abusing children. Just the grown children's stories. Could be true, but why haven't these accusations been settled when they supposedly happened ? Judging from his tv appearance, it seems hard to believe his character is such that he would drug and rape women, but if he were drinking and maybe taking drugs, his character would be altered, perhaps leading to such actions. But a court of law wants proof. A settlement without proof admits guilt and Cosby doesn't appear to want to admit guilt for his reputation and possible jail time. The women will likely have to live with their pain, because without proof there's no case in court. And Cosby doesn't have to pay a dime. Their only retaliation is to keep him off the networks, as his punishment, if he's guilty. Another aspect, why would the women protest for so long, if their stories weren't true. As a woman, I tend to believe them. There's been too many liars who are caught lying, and the public is in shock.
I want to know why Dr Cosby has not been questioned by the police. Or if they did question him why no charges.
He was questioned by the police in 2005 with regard to the alleged sexual assault of Andrea Constand, but she had waited a year before reporting it to the police, and the district attorney said there was "insufficient credible and admissible evidence" and so decided not to press criminal charges.
It's simple: Bill Cosby is standing in for Obama right now.
I'm serious about that. Somebody has done something dreadful to the status and stature of the Black community, and somebody must be punished.
Cosby is this season's Wicker Man.
With exclusively black art on the walls, a huge anti-apartheid poster on Theo's door, and no white music ever playing anywhere.
I wasn't actually aware that there was "black art" and "white music," whatever those things even mean. I wasn't aware of apartheid (being still in elementary school), but even so, it was a social issue. I never said that they didn't have personalities or interests. Just that I saw them as human (well, as characters in a TV show), not as a race, in the same way that I did characters on any other show that I watched.
Wait - you just said the Huxtables were your view of normal - so which is it? Real or a fantasy?
I thought of the family itself as normal. How they interacted on the show. Obviously it was a sitcom, so there were some ridiculous plot points, but the family interactions, between siblings, with parents, grandparents, etc, felt real. Felt normal.
Where I live real estate is cheap and as a child I didn't know anything about real estate prices in NYC! So all the kids having their own room, normal looking furniture and kitchens...it didn't seem strange at all. It still doesn't, if it were in Arkansas prices.
As an adult, knowing the real estate prices in NYC, I have no problem believing any particular house might be ridiculously expensive. Of course, it was supposed to have been set in Brooklyn in the 80's, and as far as I know, that would have made sense? Brooklyn hadn't gotten overrun by the artist types by that point had it? I went to visit years ago with a friend who emigrated here and he lived in Brooklyn when they got to the US. I understand it's gotten much pricier these days.
The Crack wrote;

"Wait, are you claiming you never predicted a Republican defeat this November?"
Please tell me Crack isn't wrong, because then he might be wrong about reparations and I was really counting on those.
Mark,
"It's simple: Bill Cosby is standing in for Obama right now."
That's original, considering blacks aren't that pissed at Obama and thought Cosby had merely lost his mind. Go on:
"I'm serious about that. Somebody has done something dreadful to the status and stature of the Black community, and somebody must be punished."
What "dreadful" thing are you referring to? Criticism? Blacks criticise ourselves all-the-time. Brutally. We lined up for Bill Cosby's diatribes but you think that's what's driving this?
You are badly mistaken - and it reveals how little you understand about blacks today, and how badly you want to replace us with the uninformed white supremacist interpretation of reality.
"Cosby is this season's Wicker Man."
And - like the whites who think Cosby was on their side for criticising us openly - you are waaay off-base,...
Lyssa,
"I saw them as human (well, as characters in a TV show), not as a race, in the same way that I did characters on any other show that I watched."
Which is COMPLETELY different to how Cosby, or blacks in general, saw it.
Whites are just clueless.
Read history y'all,...
Where do these accusations fall on the rape scale?
1. Rape
2. Clinton rape
3. Polanski rape
4. Rape rape
Anything below 4 doesn't count, of course
P.S. I'm not sure where wearing a disapproved shirt falls on this scale
eric,
"Wait, are you claiming you never predicted a Republican defeat this November?"
Not that I can remember - I could be mistaken.
I certainly wanted one,...
"I thought of the family itself as normal. How they interacted on the show. Obviously it was a sitcom, so there were some ridiculous plot points, but the family interactions, between siblings, with parents, grandparents, etc, felt real. Felt normal."
That was the impact of the show--the portrayal of an upper income black family as relatable to all races. It wasn't the first black-cast sitcom, what with Good Times and Jeffersons, but those earlier shows made race a central impact of their plot lines.
What's maddening now is this campaign to wipe Cosby from pop culture history--not just cancelling his new show but trying to keep his reruns from airing, as if we can now make him an "unperson". Even if he is guilty of what he's been accused--which hasn't been proven--to pretend that he didn't exist as a key part of the popular culture for the past fifty years seems a bit Stalinist.
Good Times
"Temporary layoffs, good times"
And now I have that song in my head!
Coconuss Network,
"Another aspect, why would the women protest for so long, if their stories weren't true. As a woman, I tend to believe them."
Exactly. People who've been wronged don't generally just clam up, even out of embarrassment.
I've been making my claims for 9 years now.
I believe them, too,...
Brando,
"Even if he is guilty of what he's been accused--which hasn't been proven--to pretend that he didn't exist as a key part of the popular culture for the past fifty years seems a bit Stalinist."
Hey, don't knock Stalin - he was white America's partner in WWII before they allowed over a 1000 Nazis to live here, fully paid.
And all that while they tortured blacks here - get the story right:
Show a little national integrity,...
Crack...The slavery was opposed from the start by the Puritans that came into Massachusetts Bay and spread west across the northern third of today's USA. They sent their Army down south to eliminate it and did a 10 year reconstruction to punish the Confederacy.
The Highland Scots-Irish in the middle never had slaves and few favored secession; but some fought anyway when Yankee armies invaded their area.
The Source of slavery culture was the murderous British Monarchy and its loyalist hierarchy in the Caribbean Islands and then along the Coastal lands from Virginia to Texas imported the use of African slave labor to support their super wealthy planter elite.
After the War, the Republican coalition stayed in power until FDR formed a new coalition. Neither one wanted to kick the southern voters out until a stubborn Scots-Iris , Southern Baptist, President by accident named Harry Truman decided that doing the right thing was a president's job.
"Because they saw the hands of the Right all over his persecution. They saw the hunt and the kill -and they won't play along with it."
So I guess a guy can get a woman alone, physically impose himself on her, strip her clothes off, stick his dick in her without consent, and cover up the crime with lies but get a free pass if the only ones boorish enough to actually call him on the behavior are from a group you don't like. I didn't realize crimes were so situational. Are you saying rape is not prosecutable unless you can get a Democrat to vouch for it? It sounds like you're getting into ISIS territory here where the rape victim is simply cannon fodder for a fight between different groups of men. What actually happened to her is irrelevant, as long as you don't like the ones pointing out the violation. So very sad when you fail the test of integrity this badly. Especially if you're a feminist giving Clinton a free pass and telling the woman victim to suck it up and go home because giving her the justice to which she's entitled is politically inconvenient.
Lyssa,
"I saw them as human (well, as characters in a TV show), not as a race, in the same way that I did characters on any other show that I watched."
Which is COMPLETELY different to how Cosby, or blacks in general, saw it.
This is an interesting discussion. Whites see the Cosbys as just another sitcom family, even though they're black, and blacks see it as something completely different. (Landmark-y? False? Crack doesn't say).
If Whites aren't seeing race in the show, are they really clueless, or just not racist?
South Africa is the rape-rape capital of the world since the progressive's hostile takeover. The illegal alien population fares even worse. Norway's immigrant population commits the great majority of rapes, mostly against native Norwegians. I wonder if that's what motivated the viking to strike the left-wing. Perhaps the same cause that motivates Europeans to turn against left-wing subversives.
Redistributive change is bad. Retributive change is worse.

White audiences were never made to feel bad about themselves
Sigh. Another left-wing jackass who believes in blood guilt.
The Cosby Show was aimed at families with children, i.e. at people who had been children themselves (or not born at all) during the pre-CRA era. Trying to make the audience "feel bad" about something they had absolutely zero responsibility for would have been asinine.
As for Cosby himself, he had always said -- even back during his stand-up days -- that his approach to improving race relations was to show people that blacks and whites found the same things funny and saw things the same way.
And it worked, too.
Meade/Ann, how many of my posts did you delete?
Looks like quite a few.
"Temporary layoffs, good times"
And now I have that song in my head!"
I didn't before, but now...
"Easy credit rip offs, good times!"
I can't look at high rise urban apartments without that song going through my head.
Crack :Yeah, the guy whites called "incompetent" because he didn't join them in panicking over the one confirmed case of ebola in this country.
That one hurts. I rolled my eyes at"bird flu" and "swine flu" but I bought into the ebola scare.
I see that Crack is back. Time for me to leave again. For the hundredth time, I refuse to be associated with anything that promotes racism. Professor, you should be ashamed of allowing such vile racism onto this blog.
traditionalguy,
"Crack...The slavery was opposed from the start by the Puritans that came into Massachusetts Bay and spread west across the northern third of today's USA."
O.K., that covers the 256 years blacks were slaves - and all the wealth it generated for the entire nation - just like in the textbooks.
"They sent their Army down south to eliminate it and did a 10 year reconstruction to punish the Confederacy."
And then came over 100 years of letting the exact same racists do the exact same thing, under slightly different terms, with the entire nation's blessing, because - after 10 whole years of "punishing" the slavers frpm afar - they assumed their work was done and blacks will do fine living with with nothing but the KKK.
"The Highland Scots-Irish in the middle never had slaves and few favored secession; but some fought anyway when Yankee armies invaded their area."
The money slavery generated benefitted them, too. American history - without the wrinkles - paints a lovely picture of all involved. Black people say different.
"The Source of slavery culture was the murderous British Monarchy and its loyalist hierarchy in the Caribbean Islands and then along the Coastal lands from Virginia to Texas imported the use of African slave labor to support their super wealthy planter elite."
Please. The source of American slavery culture was America. It had a choice of what kind of country it wanted to be, at the beginning, and kicked the can down the road.
"After the War, the Republican coalition stayed in power until FDR formed a new coalition."
The "ineffectual" Republican coalition that let blacks get further destroyed, you mean?
"Neither one wanted to kick the southern voters out until a stubborn Scots-Iris , Southern Baptist, President by accident named Harry Truman decided that doing the right thing was a president's job."
Don't get me started on Truman,...
It sure is a good thing that Meade/Althouse are policing this thread so thoroughly.
Otherwise, somebody (who isn't crack) might go off topic.

Alas, no. You will just have to use the tried and true "view left and scroll" method.
Sorry, I mean "your friend" will.

In all seriousness, why was this addendum to your question necessary?

Racists - say the word - they're not just "a group you don't like" but the most hated group this country has ever produced.
They even rank below rapists, but - still - y'all want to try and redeem them. That's crazy.
"I didn't realize crimes were so situational."
How long have you lived in America?
"Are you saying rape is not prosecutable unless you can get a Democrat to vouch for it?"
Back to the partisan nonsense? Man, you guys are screwing yourselves by always doing - nobody takes you seriously, on race, once you do that. The problem is whites - not Democrats. As I said, if Bill Clinton ranks higher than you do, that should be a sign of how low you are.
"It sounds like you're getting into ISIS territory here where the rape victim is simply cannon fodder for a fight between different groups of men."
Whatever. Keep trying avoidance - it's never worked, but keep trying.
"What actually happened to her is irrelevant, as long as you don't like the ones pointing out the violation."
You really can't accept that, by going after Bill Clinton for absolutely anything (Whitewater, Vince Foster, etc.) the Right made it's own name mud and allowed absolutely anything, can you?
You screwed the pooch.
"So very sad when you fail the test of integrity this badly."
I did? Because you deliberately are not understanding the reality you admit you live in? Whatever dude. I guess I'll have to live with it.

Align yourself with racists and there's a good chance, no one will ever want to hear anything you have to say about anything, ever,...
I spend WAY too much time lurking, seeing what the cool kids say, on Althouse.
Thanks to Crack for underscoring what a total waste of time it can be.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just got, installed, and tried this plug in and all I can say is THANK YOU!
MadisonMan,
"If Whites aren't seeing race in the show, are they really clueless, or just not racist?"
Clueless. I see black's race. I see white's race.
Why are whites, alone, making such an effort to deny people their identities - along with their rights? I'll tell you:
Because they're not doing the work, but trying to find a short-cut out of doing it.
See, if whites don't see race, they have no reason to acknowledge what white racial attitudes (like unilaterally not seeing race) do to blacks. No need to study our country's real history - with blacks in slavery to whites because they're black - and, without all that, no need to pay reparations either.
No race - no problem for whites to deal with - so they can go on saying "We don't even THINK about race!" while spending all the money thinking about race got them.
I don't need you to not see my race. I need you to stop mistreating it.
That's a big difference,...
That's original, considering blacks aren't that pissed at Obama and thought Cosby had merely lost his mind.
Actually, I did get sidetracked. I shouldn't have implied that it was the Black Community going full guns against Cosby. I honestly don't know the color profile of those going hardest at Cosby. My impression is that it's the usual Progressives, which ain't all that Black. Progressivism is all about helping the downtrodden whether they want or need it or not. Progressives are people who in another time wouldn't have been embarrassed to to bear the White Man's Burden.
(And now we're back to fashion, of course...)
No, the Progressive Left has chosen one Black Man to stand in for the Black Messiah who has let them down and left them in darkness.
There's a reason ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX are abandoning Obama tonight; he has become a liability to the Left, and the big money on the right sees his end-around on Amnesty to be harmful to a cause near and dear to Big Money of any political persuasion. Obama has become inconvenient.
I grant you this: the Black community as it stands today is irrelevant to both the Progressive Left as it is to the Establishment Right. Destroying Cosby satisfies needs for both sides.
Cosby may be guilty of crimes, or not. The volume of the outrage is the telling thing here. This story is expanding to fill a very hungry space in the national conscious.
You of all people should know when a lynching is needed any convenient person matching the critical demographic will do.
I ask in all seriousness Crack: in what way can Whites see race without being racist?
Only fools play games they can't win.
If your friend uses Google Chrome, tell her to install the extension called Blog Comment Killfile
Nice! I'd been thinking of writing my own, but once again we see that procrastination solves more problems than effort does. :)
I think Crack's trolling could be significantly improved if he could troll on multiple subjects. But these days you see one of his posts and you really don't need to read it--you already know it'll be "white racists" "GOP racists" and "blacks will rise up". Toss in some reparations nonsense and then what else is there?
The art of great trolling is to mix it up a bit. Bring it down to racism all the time (even if the thread was about what sort of kitchen mixer works best--"you whiteys need kitchen mixers since you no longer have our women as your houseslaves to do your food mixing!") and then the trolled will get tired of it.
Crack didn't "come back" AA let him back in the.
Either way. I miss his viewpoint.
Comments would be pretty boring if everyone just said various versions of Oh yes, I agree!!
FullMoon,

Challenging me on my own story - years after I've been over it a billion times with links - like you're my white authority. That's rich.
I'll give you this from Tonic magazine when they were finally on the hunt - and this from three years after I alerted the authorities. (The authorities finally came to me for help to sink him).
My wife walked away without anyone looking into it,...
Steven said...
"There is, of course, no more (or less) hard evidence against Cosby now than there was twenty years ago."
Well, that's false, Steven. There are additional accusations which have surfaced in the past twenty years, including fairly recent (2005) incidents, which were found credible but not provable by the prosecutor.
But there is a big difference between this case and your standard he said/she said involving a famous (and wealthy) person; there are simply not that many people who are in a position to make this accusation. Most of the accusers are young women who met Cosby in the context of a career in the entertainment business. In many cases, Cosby initiated the contact. All of them claim that he first offered to help with their career, then got them alone, gave them a drug in a drink, and raped them.
So, to believe Cosby, we have to suppose that all these women, women he selected, turned out to be pathological liars, telling the same lie. And also, that even after he was accused, he continued to seek out young women and offer to help with their careers, and arrange to be alone with them in facilities with beds. I guess Cosby's desire to help attractive young women with their careers, in bedrooms, outweighed the advice his attorney must surely have given him. That Cos, he just loves to help the young people. Females, that is.
How many of the women in that video Althouse posted do you suppose he raped? A couple of them are pretty good-looking, I expect he went after them.
Yeah, either that or they are withholding the story, like IRS, Fast and Furious, and Gruber. Story gonna be all over Spanish language media. They are the target audience, right?
"Comments would be pretty boring if everyone just said various versions of Oh yes, I agree!!"
Isn't there some middle ground between "yes I agree" and "you're all white racists even though I don't know what race you are and we were discussing traffic patterns"?
How about some honest dissent and thoughtful debate among people who want to be exposed to different viewpoints?
"I saw them as human (well, as characters in a TV show), not as a race, in the same way that I did characters on any other show that I watched."
Which is COMPLETELY different to how Cosby, or blacks in general, saw it.
I don't know how any other specific people saw the show, and neither do you. But I know that the fact that a lot of people saw it the way I saw it (a warm, likable family that they would want to be a part of), combined with the fact that it was just a really good, funny show, was why it was such a hit and so well-remembered.
I'm really sad that this entire scandal is going on. I do not like to have my impression of someone who was so fondly a part of my childhood ruined like this.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just got, installed, and tried this plug in and all I can say is THANK YOU!"
You're welcome.
It's available for Firefox now, too. Called just Blog Killfile over there.
Revenant,
"Sigh. Another left-wing jackass who believes in blood guilt."

"The Cosby Show was aimed at families with children, i.e. at people who had been children themselves (or not born at all) during the pre-CRA era. Trying to make the audience "feel bad" about something they had absolutely zero responsibility for would have been asinine."
No, whites have no responsibility for the state of black America because WHITES AREN'T PART OF THE COUNTRY. They're not citizens, just "individuals" who get to walk away from anything, but will attack anyone who dares say they might walk away from whites for their behavior and attitudes.
That's it, right?
Oh - that, and blacks locked themselves in prison at the much higher rate than China locks up it's people.
"As for Cosby himself, he had always said -- even back during his stand-up days -- that his approach to improving race relations was to show people that blacks and whites found the same things funny and saw things the same way.
And it worked, too."
For Cosby - and his white fans - the rest of us don't seem too good,...
Can whites even begin to comprehend how unfair their white supremacist viewpoint is?
If the answer to this is "no", then complaining about racism is truly and utterly pointless. Proclaim the truth as loudly as you like—since white people cannot "even begin to comprehend how unfair" their viewpoint is, it can't convince them. And you (and Ta-Nehisi Coates, and anyone else who complains about white racism) are certifiable morons.
Seriously. Talking about reparations? Fool. If whites are as impossible to get through to as you say, you should instead get out of the country while you can. It's only a matter of time before the unconvincable white people finally decide on a solution, whether it'll be for you or your descendants.
If the civil suit lawyer found 13 women with similar stories, how did the prosecutor of find them. The alleged victim's testimony was itself enough to charge Cosby with rape.
The prosecutor is full of shit that he didn't have enough to charge Cosby. He had more than enough and now he's trying to cover his cowardice or incompetence.
I'm really sad that this entire scandal is going on. I do not like to have my impression of someone who was so fondly a part of my childhood ruined like this.
I agree. I haven't paid significant attention to cosby in 20 years, but there are so many old photo's where we are all gathered around for family holidays, christmas, birthdays, etc that have the cosby show on tv in the background. It is sad.
Crack,
Do you seriously think a black should never be sent to prison for killing someone? What would you say about the White justice system if they didn't prosecute blacks for at least killing other blacks?
I know it's all the fault of white people born after 1985 but isn't a black killing another black still sort of bad?
And how would reparations help any of this? Who would arrest blacks from stealing the reparations from other blacks?
Brando wrote: Isn't there some middle ground between "yes I agree" and...
It's not the viewpoint; it's the word count.
Um, Jupiter, if you don't know what a word means in a sentence, look it up before you declare the sentence "wrong". I selected the word "hard" there advisedly.
My point here is that a pattern of accusations of behavior, no matter how conclusively damning, is ignored by the media unless and until there is either hard evidence or ideological capital for someone to make from it. That Cosby is being pilloried now (when a comedian included the accusations with an ideological point) instead of in 2005 (which is when the additional not-hard evidence you cite came out) directly supports my assertion.

You mean the party of "Lincoln and his black Republicans"? I fit right in there. A better question is what kind of Republican are you?

This is what I could find in a short time.
I'm sure there is more, at least, my memory says there is. I recall several times you made a list of past predictions you've made to bolster your future prediction that the Republicans were going to lose in November.
Mark,
"I shouldn't have implied that it was the Black Community going full guns against Cosby. I honestly don't know the color profile of those going hardest at Cosby. My impression is that it's the usual Progressives, which ain't all that Black."
Bill Cosby spoke his original criticisms (the pound cake speech) to a room full of black men - no whites or reporters were allowed.
"(And now we're back to fashion, of course...)"
Hoodies, maybe?
"The Progressive Left has chosen one Black Man to stand in for the Black Messiah who has let them down and left them in darkness."
That's the whites, who can't grasp what "black" things Obama does, since he announced he's not trying to earn "style points" by doing anything in the usual way.
"There's a reason ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX are abandoning Obama tonight; he has become a liability to the Left, and the big money on the right sees his end-around on Amnesty to be harmful to a cause near and dear to Big Money of any political persuasion. Obama has become inconvenient."
That's how whites will do a black man - and why blacks don't trust whites: they just can't take the pressure. Ann voted for Obama - twice - and now she supports the racist Scott Walker.
That's the problem.
"I grant you this: the Black community as it stands today is irrelevant to both the Progressive Left as it is to the Establishment Right. Destroying Cosby satisfies needs for both sides."
Probably - except conservative whites can't stop saying they thought he was "off the plantation" and siding with them - a misreading of black conservatism that's so insane it's funny. For the record:
Bill Cosby thinks whites are racist.
"Cosby may be guilty of crimes, or not. The volume of the outrage is the telling thing here. This story is expanding to fill a very hungry space in the national conscious."
Good - whites trying to fill "the national consciousness" with useless bullshit is dishonest and boring.
"You of all people should know when a lynching is needed any convenient person matching the critical demographic will do."
Bill should've scrapped the respectability politics because A) it's not true B) it lost him the black community, and C) it aligned him with his enemies.
Now he has to stand alone - unlike OJ, for a while,...
@campy -
Thanks dude.
In case it wasn't clear in the previous message, this part:
"No one tell Crack. He has predicted, on this blog, that the GOP will be defeated this November.

Was written by me. It got garbled in my copy and paste.
Mark,
"I ask in all seriousness Crack: in what way can Whites see race without being racist?
Only fools play games they can't win."
Bullshit. I have white friends who wouldn't dare drop race - for being fools in their own eyes. They know, if an alien came to Earth and learned the history of America, they'd have no problem understanding the current black condition - while whites here insist that's not the reason:
It's all black's fault - nothing about hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow, plunder - nothing.
Stop that lie and race would be no burden at all.
Also - what's to "win"? (That word explains why whites keep trying not to "lose")
We're either a country or we're not, with values we uphold or not, and a history we own or not.
The Japanese didn't "win" reparations - they were due them - and nobody "lost" in them getting them.
Whites play games with black American's lives,...
So you're saying if Cosby had just toed the Black Community Approved Line then the Black Community would be standing with him, rapist or not?
Nice little community you've got there.
OTOH, there aren't all that many Black heretics for the Progressive Left to target over the next two years. The new Republican Blacks in Congress are going to face a rough time I think.
The Progressive Left sure does run an efficient plantation, doesn't it?
Imagine meeting an attractive young woman at work, and deciding immediately that you will rape her. So, you smile and chat in a friendly fashion. After she has gotten used to you, you offer to help her get ahead in her career. She is delighted by the attention of this famous older man, she probably grew up watching you on television, and she readily agrees to meet you at your hotel. She is young and beautiful, and her happiness and light-hearted optimism make her even lovelier. A pity that she will probably be psychologically scarred for life by what you are about to do to her, just for a few minutes pleasure. You have the drug ready, and you offer it to her in a drink.
I hope they hound the evil old monster into an early grave. Take some pills, Bill. Why make your wife live through this?
Steven,
"If the answer to this is "no", then complaining about racism is truly and utterly pointless."
Man, you guys don't read. How many times have I said that, here? How many times has Coates written about his "blue period" when he knows it's hopeless? You don't know - because you don't read blacks - you merely insert your viewpoint built on ignorance of us and what we do. As Jon Stewart asked, after pointing out this phenomena of whites speaking from ignorance:
If you think it's hard hearing about black's oppression, just think how hard it is for us to live with it.
"Seriously. Talking about reparations? Fool."
Seriously. Talking about ending slavery/Jim Crow/ending mass discrimination and segragation? Fool.
"If whites are as impossible to get through to as you say, you should instead get out of the country while you can."
I tried it. American slaves - stripped of our cultural identities as anything else - have no place to go. Didn't think about that, either, did you?
That'll be reparational, too, BTW.
"It's only a matter of time before the unconvincable white people finally decide on a solution, whether it'll be for you or your descendants."
Spoken like a true white man:
"Kill 'em all" being your answer to every problem,...
Crack, you have token white friends? Ones who smile and nod when you go on a Reparations rant? "Lend" you money when you "need" it?
Cool.
From what I've read there are no corroborating witnesses or other evidence. The prosecutor interviewed both the complainant and Cosby who fully cooperated with the police. Even though the prosecutor might believe personally – based on other allegations which would generally NOT be admissible in a trial for the alleged 2004 incident – he evidently thought that Cosby was likely to be seen by the judge or jury as the more credible of the two and that he’d never meet the “guilt beyond a reasonable doubt” standard.
All us white folk, us snow folk, we be monolithically evil, yes we do. We be looking for ways to appropriate the best of Sun Folk culture while we encourage the Sun Folk to gun one another down in the streets, because we be evil mind-controlling snow-folk bastards.
We live forever, too, us evil snow folk. Every one of us pale bastards you see gentrifying your neighborhoods was carrying a gun in General Lee's army, when we weren't carrying bullwhips back on the plantations or sapping the energy of your best sun folk men, drawing them into our boudoirs and then tossing the one-drop babies into the muddy Mississippi.
We be controlling the horizontal and the vertical, don't you forget it.
The political left could not lay a hand on Cosby when he said things about personal responsibility and the more destructive elements present in some black communities that conservatives amplified as a vindication of their political positions. That's true largely because much of what Cosby was saying was a valid and useful critique.
The liberals who attacked Cosby simple lacked the skill to make a distinction between the validity of the critique and the invalidity of conservatives making this critique into a vindication of their entire political program. Cosby's critique was nothing new. Malcom X had a similar perspective. I personally heard Al Sharpton (!) give a sermon on personal and family responsibility to an audience in a black congregation church here in South Carolina in 2004. The audience was roaring its agreement. I have heard many black parents say the same thing in private conversations.
The more unsubtle hacks of the left will use Cosby's alleged personal indiscretions to discredit his so called conservative viewpoint. Problem is, his statements did not reflect just a conservative viewpoint. The notion of personal responsibility, and of rejecting truly poisonous social notions and trends, is a deeply embedded American trait. It's a strong theme in the black community, and has been since before the end of slavery.
The problem comes when conservatives (and I consider myself a conservative) decide that the problems of the black community are principally caused by lack of personal responsibility and corrosive social trends. These traits are both effects and causes. In particular they are effects of poverty, white racism and a lousy educational system for blacks. Blacks have been victims of active racism and indifference in this country for hundreds of years. The progress made in the 20th Century does not eliminate those facts, their long term effects or the need to deal with these effects.
Cosby is being laid low by women who have decided to try to destroy him. I have no idea whether their claims are true, but in the current environment they will be believed. Expect the fools and demagogues on the left to use this to undermine Cosby's social critique, and blame everything on white conservatives. Expect the less foolish on the left to remain largely silent. And expect the issues facing black communities to be ignored or stereotyped as part of the whole discussion.
HEY CRACKMC
Interesting stuff, sorry you were fooled by that white French lady for so long.
Anyway, was she convicted and incarcerated?
What;s the latest info? Sorry I was unfamiliar with the back story, I only came here in the midst of the first union busting election.
I feel for ya. Love hurts.
mccullough,
"Crack,
Do you seriously think a black should never be sent to prison for killing someone?"
This isn't about killers. It's about pot dealers, now that the country has basically legalized it, so white kids can make a fortune setting up "medical" despinseries. It's about "numbers runners," now that the lottery is a national affair. It's about two people - one white and one black - who both got busted for drugs but the white got probabtion and the black 10 years.
And it's about centuries of white people who did so much worse without ever paying a cost of any kind.
This is not a land of justice but an immoral place that keeps us in Hell.
"What would you say about the White justice system if they didn't prosecute blacks for at least killing other blacks?"
How whites can determine justice, in a system they set up to be unjust, is a pickle. There's blacks many blacks would LOVE to see free, even killers, that whites hate - because whites don't see race when they should. There was no reason for a single Black Panther to die, for instance. It was just a mass killing by whites so they'll feel better.
"I know it's all the fault of white people born after 1985 but isn't a black killing another black still sort of bad?"
Sort of. Depends on how they're navigating a system whites say isn't bad at all. A system that let them lynch anybody with no cost - and nothing paid to those who lost their family member (and his progeny) either.
Blacvks have a better sense of right and wrong - under this unfair system - than whites do.
"And how would reparations help any of this?"
1) It would beef up black's idea of the nation's integrity - that would bring a lot of the hostility down.
2) All that stolen money is why so many blacks are in poverty. You can't steal people's money for 400 years and expect different. With reparations, blacks would be able to live more-normal lives, and a lot of those acts of desperation (that lands us in prison) wouldn't be necessary.
3) Blacks in trouble could hire a real defense, instead of getting some over-worked PD with a billion-heavy caseload and only an hour to talk about your case before trial.
I can go on, but I'd never stop.
"Who would arrest blacks from stealing the reparations from other blacks?"
Why would they? We're not white folks. As Coates said, after studying the history of Europe:
Everything white people have done to blacks, they first did to each other.
It would help if whites didn't think everybody behaves as they do. Like Ann, yesterday, saying everybody lies. No we don't.
See blacks for who we are:

I see some comments here comparing Bill Clinton to Bill Cosby. Let's set the record straight. Bill Clinton had affairs and was accused of groping, rape by one woman who later recanted and apologized and by one woman who could not remember the date. So one woman accused him. The others were affairs.
Bill Cosby has been accused of by 13 women at last count of misconduct including rape. None were affairs. That's much worse.
"no matter what he says, he's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. "
Yes and I am sad the others in the cast will suffer when the reruns are cancelled.
The drugging thing is questionable and I wonder why NOT ONE women went to the cops at the time.
Thanks for the info on the blog comment killfile app in Chrome. I no longer use Firefox and have deleted it. I don't have a problem with gay marriage but I do have a problem with the warfare on people who think differently.
I'm tired of scrolling past Crack.
" That's much worse."
If true.
Mark,
"So you're saying if Cosby had just toed the Black Community Approved Line then the Black Community would be standing with him, rapist or not?"
Hell, man, whites, here and now, are having a hard time letting him go and you'd ask that question?
BLACK PEOPLE LOVED BILL COSBY LIKE GOD.
If he hadn't shown how far his love for us extended, which few blacks share, there's a good chance he could've wiggled through *with some support* for anything.
"Nice little community you've got there."
See? You just can't help going for the victims. Blacks don't need your criticism. So we're desperate for heroes - what a people, huh?
Why do you think that is?
"OTOH, there aren't all that many Black heretics for the Progressive Left to target over the next two years. The new Republican Blacks in Congress are going to face a rough time I think."
Two things:
1. Blacks don't give a shit about that - we're looking out for the race and progressives are as much a hinderence to us as conservatives.
2. Mia will be feeling no love and Uncle Tim (Scott) had better be ready to be Uncle Tom for some time now.
We will not be betrayed.
"The Progressive Left sure does run an efficient plantation, doesn't it?"
Whites are the plantation - that's why Cosby and other black conservatives never go there,...

I’ve heard others make the claim that Juanita Broaddrick recanted her claim that she was assaulted by then Governor Clinton but have found nothing to support that. Do you have a citation?
Bill Cosby has been accused of by 13 women at last count of misconduct including rape. None were affairs. That's much worse.
I’m not sure if this is an accurate characterization. I've read that there were thirteen women filed Jane Doe affidavits (the contents of which do not appear to be publicly available) so I don’t think we can say for certain what they actually claimed. Two of the women were interviewed and claimed to have had ongoing consensual relations with Cosby which sounds like an “affair” to me.
Jupiter,
"Take some pills, Bill. Why make your wife live through this?"
My black friends and I are already on a mediated suicide watch,...
Mark,
"Crack, you have token white friends? Ones who smile and nod when you go on a Reparations rant? "Lend" you money when you "need" it?
Cool."
Again - you don't read:
Blacks don't have token friends - whites do - most know a single black person and extrapolate from them who blacks are. They usually choose an ignorant black who agrees with them, too - that's a must.
Most blacks have 10 or more white friends, by comparison. They don't have to agree. Or act differently or anything. I have conservative friends like y'all and very liveral friends. Republicans and Red Diaper babies.
In other words, blacks are well-rounded Americans and whites are racial weirdoes,...
Crack, have you ever done anything totally unforgivable to a White person? Because honestly, I can't understand your need to demonize Whites as a category otherwise.
It's not healthy. Really. You're so against cults? You're writing like a member of one. Snap out of it.

Right, Matt. Good memory you have there. Tell me, what's it like to spend most of your life in a cave, unable to communicate with the rest of the human race?
I thought it awfully strange that CNN would just now start bringing these allegations out as major news stories.
They want something spicy to fill the airtime their non-coverage of Grubergate creates?
… to pretend that he didn't exist as a key part of the popular culture for the past fifty years seems a bit Stalinist.
Let the "show trial" begin!
Ann voted for Obama - twice - and now she supports the racist Scott Walker.
Actually I think our host voted for Romney in this last Presidential. BTW, has Walker done anything specifically racist or is it because he's a white person and ipso facto a racist?
Mark,
"All us white folk, us snow folk, we be monolithically evil, yes we do."
Uh-Oh. Somebody's slipped over to the dark side - I can tell.
"We be looking for ways to appropriate the best of Sun Folk culture while we encourage the Sun Folk to gun one another down in the streets, because we be evil mind-controlling snow-folk bastards."
No need. You've already herded us into ghettos of desperation - just like the Nazis did the Jews - and we know the Jews all treated each other the best under those conditions, right?
Riiight - the Nazis had nothing to do with what happened in the ghettos, either.
"We live forever, too, us evil snow folk."
No, but you pass along your culture, and the money that's stolen, and a lot more.
"Every one of us pale bastards you see gentrifying your neighborhoods was carrying a gun in General Lee's army, when we weren't carrying bullwhips back on the plantations or sapping the energy of your best sun folk men, drawing them into our boudoirs and then tossing the one-drop babies into the muddy Mississippi."
Where'd the money to gentrify come from? And why don't other Americans have it? Indians have been here longer - why not them? Blacks have been here since before most whites - why not us? Why only whites?
Something about racists saying white supremacy will rule this land "forever" comes to mind.
"We be controlling the horizontal and the vertical, don't you forget it."
Oh, we don't - believe me,...
Crack, here's the problem with this point of view. It gets us nowhere. It's a dead end.
The white man's sin was recognizing race. Also, the white man's sin is not recognizing race.
Rather than yowling about racial oppression in ways that nobody will ever listen to and accept...and therefore make no changes at all...how about finding a workable avenue to travel on which whites don't care about race and make no decisions exclusively based upon race?
Whether Cosby thinks that whites are racists or not (I know for a certainty that his wife, Camille, does), his advice to black men was excellent advice and the very best and most effective avenue to travel in a world in which white Americans pretty much ignore race.
Your broadside racial attacks and assertions that everyone that doesn't see things the way you do are either uninformed about history, clueless or white (which, in Crackville, is just a synonym for racist) will never be productive...and even, unfortunately, counter-productive. I say 'unfortunately' because I am coming to the conclusion that it is your intent since there is no other rational explanation.
- Krumhorn.
Is that guy (crack) back commenting? It's just a waste of time to read what he has to say. Why is he back?
Proof, proof, proof!!!!
I wonder how all blacks can have ten real white friends but all whites only have one token black friend. Seems like the ten real white friends should have one real black friend.
David,
"Cosby is being laid low by women who have decided to try to destroy him."

There is no indication they share Hannibal Buress' political critique of Cosby.
To suggest otherwise is to misread the history of this thing,...
I'm commenting on Cracks statement:
"Blacks don't have token friends - whites do - most know a single black person and extrapolate from them who blacks are. They usually choose an ignorant black who agrees with them, too - that's a must.

"Was she convicted and incarcerated?"
Nope - free and clear and living happy as a clam with my money.
That's justice - or Just Us,...
Wildswan, don't go using logic. That's a Snow People tool and therefore evil.
We just back from shopping at Publix for Turkey day provisions. It is always amusing at thanksgiving to see several middle age white men puzzling over lists and acting like a grocery store is a foreign place for them.
But everyone was friendly; and I got into a 10 minute conversation with a black lady about cranberry sauce. And we felt at ease despite being from different histories. It was a pleasure to be around the folks already in the mood that surrounds the Pilgrim's famous hospitality feasting day.
We also bought another Caramel Apple Pie since we liked the first one we had so much last week.
Those Mayflower guys, who were sincere Calvinist Christians, invited the Indians to the first feast. We can at least invite Crack to our feasts of ideas. He always teaches me a lot that comes in handy.
"You really can't accept that"
I can accept that you don't have an answer, which is why you poured on the verbiage as a form of distraction. But on the fundamental question, does rape not count if it's inconvenient to your politics, your non-answer is pretty clear. It doesn't. And the victim be damned.
Mark,
"Crack, have you ever done anything totally unforgivable to a White person?"
I laughed while one died one time. Stood right over him. Still feel good about it, too - he made my life Hell.
"Because honestly, I can't understand your need to demonize Whites as a category otherwise."
Because you're ahistorical about 400 years of white-on-black abuse and willing to lie to yourself and others. If you weren't, you'd understand it perfectly and try to stop the damage.
"It's not healthy. Really."
Neither is racism but I don't see whites putting it away - they just switch the terms, like "colorblind," where they can openly damage a people,...who just happen to be black. Cut food stamps - to people who just happen to be black. Cut welfare,...to people who just happen to be black.
They don't see race.
"You're so against cults? You're writing like a member of one. Snap out of it."
Whites are a cult, you dummy. The cult of white supremacy,...
No need. You've already herded us into ghettos of desperation - just like the Nazis did the Jews - and we know the Jews all treated each other the best under those conditions, right?
"I got your Godwin Moment right here, Cracker!"
Actually, the most famous Jewish Ghetto was in Warsaw, and my understanding of history doesn't include the Jews being herded into it.
Herded out of it and into concentration camps ro be used and then slaughtered, yes. Bit of a qualitative difference there, so I don't really see your "just like" phrasing.
There were Jewish Ghettos in New York City too, back in the 30's and 40's. They were famous for producing Nobel Prize winners in the sciences.
You could do worse than trace your roots to the Jewish Ghettoes.
I laughed while one died one time. Stood right over him. Still feel good about it, too - he made my life Hell.
I'm not much of a Christian, though I was raised in the Christian tradition. Somebody can make your life hellish, but in that tradition it's your choice whether you end up in hell itself.
Whites are a cult, you dummy. The cult of white supremacy,
Good luck Crack. Like I say, I'm not a Christian but I do know a lost soul when I see it.
Krumhorn,
"Crack, here's the problem with this point of view. It gets us nowhere. It's a dead end."
Is not - whites try to change the terms.
"The white man's sin was recognizing race. Also, the white man's sin is not recognizing race."
No - the white man sees race - that's why blacks get hurt. The lie is SAYING you don't see race when you also say you don't even THINK about race. Blacks know that's impossible after 400 years of white's obsessing on it. Even Bill O'Reilly has admitted it:
Whites just want the problem to go away without paying anything (AKA "losing") - that's the "dead end" because blacks aren't going to betray our families, and those who sacrificed to get us this far, by agreeing to roll up the carpet on this one. Getting our money back - and getting this country's history right - are all that matters to us.
"Rather than yowling about racial oppression in ways that nobody will ever listen to and accept...and therefore make no changes at all...how about finding a workable avenue to travel on which whites don't care about race and make no decisions exclusively based upon race?"
Because that would be a lie. Why do whites want to live a lie? Can't you see al the trouble Cosby is in for that? With blacks, specifically? We are a moral people. This matters to us. Why not whites?
"Whether Cosby thinks that whites are racists or not (I know for a certainty that his wife, Camille, does), his advice to black men was excellent advice and the very best and most effective avenue to travel in a world in which white Americans pretty much ignore race."
Again - bullshit. Respectability hasn't proven to do shit to change white's minds about how they treat blacks. They still want their way, they still treat us wrong, thery still want to keep all the money they stole, and they're still the squarest group of liars in the country, so no "cool" buttons for you.
"Your broadside racial attacks and assertions that everyone that doesn't see things the way you do are either uninformed about history, clueless or white (which, in Crackville, is just a synonym for racist) will never be productive...and even, unfortunately, counter-productive."
And all those innocent people on death row - 1 out of 9 - is your evidence of white's fairness, I take it?
"I say 'unfortunately' because I am coming to the conclusion that it is your intent since there is no other rational explanation."
I can't be overly concerned with what whites think or feel about what I do - I must play my part in this country. I'm not white. I don't want blacks hurt. If that means talking to a wfew whites and getting them to see that, no, Bill Cosby didn't even like you, then so be it.
I want to see some truth somewhere,...
David,
"Cosby is being laid low by women who have decided to try to destroy him."
For raping them and nothing more.
There is no indication they share Hannibal Buress' political critique of Cosby.
I agree. The political types are glad to see the women succeed where they failed. (Not that the women are not political, but their issues are different.)
That's an incredibly hateful article. I much regret having followed that link.
The bandwagon is full of money and the willing from another era suddenly have a way to profit after casual dark dalliances.
Having never been charged, Bill Cosby has the statute of limitations on his side but dirty liberal politics and the complicity in the media will do what Truth or Consequences did to the town of Mole Hill, WV. It is now Mountain, WV.
Personally, I think the whole Cosby thing is a distraction. Gruber, amnesty, black unemployment, etc. too many chickens coming home to roost. Cosby gives everyone something to get outraged over and it doesn't matter which side of the discussion you're on. Two weeks from now this will be but a memory.
@Goju, looks like you're right. Rape allegations against Cosby seem to have been timed to deflect this allegation of child rape against a major Obama bundler and donor to Democrats.
Crack, has anyone in your reparations group figured out how much money was stolen over the 400 years? If nobody has I will work on it if I get a share. I am a white guy but I feel your minority pain. I am left-handed and I have O negative blood. And no white slaveowners ever gave me a thing. No black slaveowners, either. Let's share the wealth.
C'mon, Althouse. Crack has hijacked your blog again. Do something about it.
And my white ancestors sold all their farms and houses to pay their bills in retirement. They spent MY inheritance, the greedy, right-handed jerks!
Grundoon: "Crack, has anyone in your reparations group figured out how much money was stolen over the 400 years? If nobody has I will work on it if I get a share."
You ,must be somewhat new here. Crack and his rocket scientist pals have worked on it alright.
Crack has shared the number $100 Trillion with us.
Yes, $100 Trillion.
Why not just make it a thousand Trillion?
@Big Mike, I think its more about diverting attention from the amnesty. Amnesty is highly unpopular with inner city blacks and hispanics (suprisingly) Last thing they want to see is more competition for jobs.
"C'mon, Althouse. Crack has hijacked your blog again. Do something about it."
What makes you think she minds? I'm frankly surprised she hasn't put him back in the blogroll yet. Probably an oversight.
"because it offered a warm vision of a world in which shared experience might help Americans of all colors to see past racial divisions"
I liked it because it was funny. But I was only about 10 when it came on the air so I didn't know the reasons why I was supposed to like it.
And when Ferguson erupts I might go over to the convenience store at the entrance to my subdivision and break their window. It is the only logical thing to do!
Thanks, Drago. Crack, let's get going on collecting the $100 trillion. This will look great on my resume. "Extortionist's Apprentice, 2014. Helped create $100 trillion in value using only guilty feelings and perserverance."
Well, hell, it's not like Cosby was a pedophilic Obama bundler or something...
"I wonder how all blacks can have ten real white friends but all whites only have one token black friend."
We get around.
Crack, I just got another great idea for us. Let's give lectures on your philosophy of life. There is a long tradition of self-improvement gurus who do this. I once bought a book named "How to Make Yourself Miserable." It had chapters on comparing your every weakness to the most successful people who ever lived and then meditating on your shortcomings. Lots of people like to live that kind of life. Let's sell them some advice!
The article gets it exactly wrong. As Hannibal Buress said, "... Cosby has the f—ing smuggest old black man public persona that I hate,” Buress ranted. “He gets on TV, ‘Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the ‘80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’; Buress started this brouhaha as a way to attack white society. He chose the one black icon most respected by whites, a man unafraid to call blacks on their shl+3, and accused him of unfalsifiable crimes. I'm not even saying Cosby is right or wrong about black society, but neither is Buress; he's merely shutting him up by calling him a rapist.
David,
There is no indication they share Hannibal Buress' political critique of Cosby.
I agree. The political types are glad to see the women succeed where they failed. (Not that the women are not political, but their issues are different.)
Failed? Hannibal Buress shares our disgust and is also correct that Cosby's swing to respectability politics is now seen as discredited, old, tired, and has simply never been true since slavery ended - Coates:
When W.E.B. Du Bois, in 1897, claimed that the "first and greatest" step toward addressing "the Negro Problem," lay in correcting the "immorality, crime and laziness among the Negroes themselves" he was wrong. No amount of morality could have prevented the overthrow of Wilmington by white supremacists—the only coup in American history—a year later. When Booker T. Washington urged blacks to use "every iota of influence that we possess" to "get rid of the criminal and loafing element of our people," he was wrong. When Marcus Garvey claimed that "the greatest stumbling block in the way of progress in the race has invariably come from within the race itself," he was dead wrong. When Malcolm X claimed that "the white man is too intelligent to let someone else come and gain control of the economy of his community,” and asserted that black people "will let anybody come in and take control of the economy of your community," he was wrong. He knew the game was rigged. He did not know how much.
That's a pretty consistent message, from a list of conservatives blacks revere and study, and nothing they suggested has stopped whites from being whites, so what is it about coming from Bill Cosby do you think we haven't heard and tried and rejected already?
Nothing works because the problem is, was, and always has been white supremacy. It's the only constant. Reparations to blacks? It should be obvious. But not under white supremacy. An unfair legal system? Shouldn't have that. Not in The New World. But under white supremacy? What other kind of legal system have blacks ever known?
And whites deny it - which is all this white supremacist system has ever needed. Fuck justice. Fuck even the appearance of justice. Jim Crow dances as he always has and white folks laugh because, while it's existential to blacks, we're merely here for white's work and amusement. We'll never be citizens. We'll never be Americans. Not like you.
White people have always been the embodiment of respectability,...
I take it back. Cosby's wife seems to enjoy being dragged through the dirt along with him.

FullMoon,
"Fortunately, I had that white privilege thing goin' for me..."
Hey, my white friends skate through life in ways I can only imagine. And that's not to say they have it easy. But whiteness matters.
I am sick and tired of racists like Traister telling us that I am guilty of something simply because of my race. Screw her and her race mongering.
Char Char Binks,
The article gets it exactly wrong.
Bullshit - he's against respectability politics.
"He chose the one black icon most respected by whites, a man unafraid to call blacks on their shl+3, and accused him of unfalsifiable crimes."
Bullshit again - he wasn't caring what whites think of Cosby. (White supremacy puts whites at the center of the story) he's against Cosby pushing a view blacks have found to fail them since slavery.
"I'm not even saying Cosby is right or wrong about black society, but neither is Buress; he's merely shutting him up by calling him a rapist."
Like Buress invented Google,....
I am struck by the hatred that Philadelphia magazine has towards Bill Cosby.
"Today will mark the end of Bill Cosby's career in comedy, in telling people how they should live their lives, in being 'America's Dad' and by some accounts, an American hero," says Victor Fiorillo, a senior reporter for Philadelphia magazine who has reported on Cosby since 2006.
Philadelphia magazine is the magazine that tried to destroy Bill Cosby back in 2006.
I read that article, and I am struck by how the rapes are a sideshow, a coda, a footnote. How about investigating the allegations, documenting the crime, proving or disproving the allegations? There's none of that.
Instead the entire thrust of the article seems to be in regard to race and those bad things Bill Cosby is saying to black people.
Bizarre. Truly bizarre.
crack: "But whiteness matters."
It sure does when you want free (yes! Free!!) money from a bank.
Did you know that all you have to do (as a white guy of course) is walk up to any ATM and viola!! Cashola.
Nice.
Whiteness matters.

Indeed.
If you trace cracks incoherence over time you will see a steadily oscillating curve followed quickly by exponential behavior followed by non-linear and unpredictable behavior.
BTW, I fully expect my comments regarding crack to be deleted shortly.
Mustn't disturb that delicate relationship crack clearly has with our hosts.
When has Crack ever been coherent? LOL.
As for Cosby, we don't know the true facts, and people are rushing to judgment. If all these women had a problem with him, they should have brought it up, real-time, in criminal court.
Skyler,
"I am sick and tired of racists like Traister telling us that I am guilty of something simply because of my race. Screw her and her race mongering."
Ooooh, even with white's long history of violence and meyhem, she's the racist while you're merely "sick and tired". And you haven't even entertained if you are "guilty of something simply because of my race" have you? No, so - if you are - all the better. You'll stay as blind to that as you are to color. Pity the people, who just happen to be black, if they run into you anyway. That's their problem. Always has been. Nobody's going to tell you what to do. Ever.
White supremacy's a hoot,...
You guys crack me up

And the "comedian" who broke the story?
All that laughter is super-creepy.

And letting known moron Crack back in seemed like a poor choice. But it saved me a lot of time in reading the comments here. Saw his name once and stopped reading.
Crack, you epitomize black racism, so don't even bother trying to taint others with your manure.
Being white is not racist. And if that's going to be the definition race hustlers want to sell, then they are going to set equality back generations.
I don't suppose blacks have any history of violence and mayhem.
Our country does not recognize "corruption of blood." I am not guilty of anything anyone else has done in previous generations, especially in generations that I don't even have any relations with. But even if my own daddy and brother were KKK Grand Klugles, or whatever they call themselves, then I'm still not guilty of what they are.
It's high time that we start pointing out that blacks are very successful in this country and have been and are presidents, CEO's, entertainers, and athletes and none of that is at all unusual.
I won't put up with your trash, crack, because you're the racist. And you have no credibility.
"White audiences were never made to feel bad about themselves or confront any hard questions about how they had benefitted from American systems from which black Americans had not benefitted."

As Upton Sinclair said: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it."
The Democrats, who INVENTED Jim Crow and 'segregation now, segregation forever', who burned the churches and murdered the black businessmen, who wink at gun violence and abortion decimating the black community in the cities they have controlled for decades, are accusing us of 'ethnic cleansing'!
News for the Democrats, YOU've been breaking up families since the dawn of the Great Society, when you arranged the welfare and benefits so the families LOST money if the father stayed around!
It's always interesting to watch other white people get indignant, even abusive, when it's suggested that racism exists, that blacks bear by far the greater brunt of it, and that white people individually and collectively have a responsibility for the existence of that racism.
