What does it mean that Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke backed out of a scheduled debate?

This looks like a last-minute cancellation, attributed to "an unavoidable conflict." The debate, at Milwaukee Area Technical College, was about student debt, and the participants were American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, economics professor Michael Rosen, and an MATC student. This might mean nothing or not much — some passing illness? some supervening fund-raising opportunity? — but one commenter at the link (to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) says:
I sense, fatigue, disillusionment, loss of enthusiasm, waning commitment, and a total breakdown of resolve.
I tried unsuccessfully to find Burke's schedule on line. What did she do yesterday that made her unavailable for the scheduled debate? Her supporters ought to want to see her out there, actively campaigning, demonstrating that the energy is still there, even after the discouraging new Marquette poll and that "plagiarism" problem (about which the camera caught Burke looking unprepared and inarticulate). There was also Michelle Obama's appearance with Burke last Monday, where, we were told:
According to a statement from the Madison branch of the Society of Professional Journalists, reporters present claimed that aides from the White House and the Burke campaign prevented them from speaking to attendees until the event concluded.

The statement added that "one press minder even told the chairman of the state Democratic Party to stop talking to a reporter because he was inside the press pen."

Meg Kissinger and Erin Richards, both of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, noted in their report on the event that they had been told not to speak to attendees, writing, "Burke and White House staff also told reporters not to talk to people in the crowd before the event."...

"To say that I was creeped out is an understatement," Kissinger wrote on her Facebook page. "This is what reporters do in America: we speak to people. At least that's how I've been doing things -- at all kinds of political events -- since 1979.”
I guess the real test will come a week from today, when Burke is scheduled to debate Governor Scott Walker, and then a week later, when there's a second debate.

She probably couldn't find any losing Democratic candidate's position paper on student loans.

She's just a weak candidate. Walker was vulnerable this year, but the Dems needed someone good and strong who could avoid mistakes and go toe to toe. At this rate she's likely to lose by at least a few points, and the speculation about his presidential ambitions will pick up next year.

Most voters know that she's heavily supported by unions, and Randi Weingarten can be expected to make a plea for increased taxpayer support of schools.

I know this, you know this, but not all voters know this. Perhaps someone on her campaign thought it might hurt her if she was seen as too close to the unions, and had too much sympathy for Randi Weingarten's "More money!" plea?

In short, she wants and expects union support but perhaps she doesn't want to put off voters who might want to see some daylight between her and these unions?

I think it is obvious. It was an opportunity to say the wrong thing at an event that had little potential positive impact. She has now shown herself to poorly articulate her positions. Big downside with little upside. Why risk it?

The time to risk it is the Walker debate, one which she cannot opt out without consequences.

Also, the story says that the appearance was a forum, I'm not sure about the structure, but it doesn't look like she would actually be debating anyone, just spouting off about how terrible student debt is, how government could reduce it, all while glossing over the real reason. As much fun as it is to make fun of Mary Burke, I don't envy her position and perhaps feel a wee bit sorry for her.

Democrats at the state level in Wisconsin are a train wreck. The fleeing to Illinois, protests and recalls have not only damaged the party's credibility, it has diminished the party into simply hating Scott Walker. Anyone with at the state level with any experience basically is shut out of running for state office -- leaving neophytes like Burke to take up the task, which can work, but usually doesn't.

Throw in some campaign hacks with a candidate who is not comfortable or prepared and the stress and grind of the fall stretch of a campaign ensure that hilarity ensues.

The only reason he felt he could make that phone call and send those emails is because the Journal-Sentinel have been compliant in the past with concealing things for Burke in the past. The media in this state has been horrible covering the election.

It means whites are such racists, in this racist country, they can't see the elephant in the room, preferring to dwell on non-issues that, because they affect nothing substantially, still supports the racist status quo.

But whites aren't going to address any of that on their own. They'll wait for a black to do it:

No one's forcing them to deal with race in Wisconsin - no one can - because Wisconsin's a white supremacist stronghold.

Well see that's the problem garage, you don't know the dictionary or colloquial definition of simple, common terms.

You can't skip out on a debate you never agreed to. Skipping out is when you say you'll be somewhere and don't go or leave early. Refusing to go in the first place is... refusing to go in the first place.

Burke said she would participate and now has decided not to. That is the very definition of skipping out.

On last night's CBS broadcast of the Green Bay home game with Minnesota, it soon became another blow out so the CBS guys started to showing shots of the happy satisfied Green Bay fans in the stands.

That went on for over an hour and not one black person was anywhere in the crowd."

The only blacks at UW Badger games are the ones that are photoshopped into photos. DIVERSITY!

Burke has 100% of the far left librul voters in her corner so she would not gain any votes by meeting with a union boss like Weingarten.

I sense, fatigue, disillusionment, loss of enthusiasm, waning commitment, and a total breakdown of resolve."

Wait, are we talking about Burke or Garage Mahal and/or Crack?

In reading their comments here and on other threads, I think you can tell they are spouting the same old nonsense, but their hearts just aren't in it. Going through the motions, but even they can tell their rants aren't having the same effect.

Maybe the"whites" should send the 5% of black African slaves sold by other black Africans that were sold to the west back to Africa? The other 95% in the Caribbean
and south and Central America would have to find their own way home.

Why it means is that Burke did even worse in debate prep than expected. Look for lots of battlefield preparation, and an attempt to wiggle out of the other debates.

He does have a day job.

Tho, it should be pointed out that Walker's job requires him to be working on State business for only 4 hours in order to call it a "full" day of work. He is then free to jet off to Nevada or Kansas for the afternoon to kiss the ring of his deep pocketed donors.

Yes Gahire, Obama is just as lazy and crooked as Walker is. Thank you for pointing that out. Did you vote for Obama? Are you going to vote for Walker?

It astounds me that so many people will criticize only one of those guys while giving the other a free pass.

Perception is everything, which is why Blue Emu must have been convicted of at least a couple dozen felonies himself in order to casually dismiss seven felony convictions as "Zero. Zilch. Nada."

Are you going to vote for Walker?

Nope...sadly I live in the People's republic of california, and my vote matters less than a fart in the wind.

However, if I was given the opportunity to cast a vote against a Democrat that mattered, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Questions about purchase return and refund policies abound.

Seven? Name them please. Oh, and theose found guilty of anything had zero to do with Walker. If you think a DA, who complains about not having the resources to handle his case load, fording him to plea dangerous criminals, sopend four years, thousands and thousands of manhours, and many millions to put a few people in jail is worth, well, yyou are a moron.

"she has never surrounded herself with low-lifes and criminals."

You mean she avoids union officials?

I'll be damned.

Looking at the massive typos in his post, am I the only one who thinks that George needs to calm down and take a deep breath before he totally blows a gasket?

Rage filled anger seems to be the only speed for him. Has he ever disagreed with somebody without resorting to childish name calling?

So you got nothing, Penguin? Well except that lame passive aggressive so common with Madison liberals.

Yes, madisonfella, please list the seven felonies.

Burke will be given a forum on public television to present her views in a live special that day.

10/3/14, 3:29 PM

Will she be on before or after the rerun of the Peter, Paul, and Mary concert?"

Damn, you nailed that one.

What does it mean? It means that Scott Walker is an asshole.
