Writes Sarfraz Manzoor, who grew up in the UK within what he calls the "a Pakistani bubble."
Here's Manzoor's memoir, "Greetings From Bury Park, " which is described at Amazon like this:
Sarfraz Manzoor was two years old when, in 1974, he emigrated from Pakistan to Britain with his mother, brother, and sister. Sarfraz spent his teenage years in a constant battle, trying to reconcile being both British and Muslim, trying to fit in at school and at home. But it was when his best friend introduced him to the music of Bruce Springsteen that his life changed completely. From the age of sixteen on, after the moment he heard the harmonica and opening lines to “The River,” Springsteen became his personal muse, a lens through which he was able to view the rest of his life....

Maybe it's time to challenge them? On the "honor killing" business, too.
It fails to account for how a community once lionized as “more British than the British” — pious, unassuming and striving — is now condemned for harboring child abusers in its midst.
This bit of writing is irritating. The proper question is how they came to harbor child abusers in its midst, not how they are now 'condemned' for harboring child abusers. Even in his writing about the problem, he can't just say it outright.
You missed the Feminism tag.

Ironically, "The River" was the last good album Springsteen did.
The New York Times should plead the Fifth because testimony they report may serve to incriminate them.
"But Rotherham’s abusers found that their ethnicity protected them because they belonged to a community few wished to challenge."
That's where the moderate Muslims come in--they can issue that challenge from within the community, free of vile notions of political correctness.
Except they don't.
Yes, moderate Muslims exist. In vast numbers. But they don't raise their voices against the behavior of their co-religionists any more than the Rotherham Police did.
That first 15 seconds of "The River" is the epitome of "haunting".
Looks like the comments on the NYT board are disabled - way too hot a topic for the unwashed to discuss.
Today on NPR one of the commentators actually said that the motivation for Muslims that travel to join ISIS are politically disadvantage or oppression - and she meant the ones from the West.
Drip Drip. The great expulsion is going to happen when a biological or nuclear incident happens

The good Germans. They did exist. Not everyone adopted a degenerate religion of inherited and collective sin and pursued redistributive and retributive change. Unfortunately, the meek generally make poor leaders and warriors. For one, they have their hands full with responsibility for their own family's welfare.
BS The middle eastern muslim countries are full of child abusers, pimps and pedereasts.

And then there's Afghanistan, next door to Pakistan.
Perhaps this is what happens when one takes the modified cultural absolutist position: i.e., that all cultures are equal, except your own deserves to be a little less equal.
Once more, the Muslims use a religious pride identity that tells them "infidels" are their fair game that deserve all the rape, violence, enslavement and murder that a Muslim can do to them.
Who can doubt that. It is their Allah god's words transcribed by their Prophet. And murder is fun when done for god who really seems to reward it.
Sharia is its name.
99% of Pakistani's make the other 1% look bad.
Immigrants from Pakistan have a high crime rate Denmark and Norway.

In Baghram, British Marines returning from an operation deep in the Afghan mountains spoke last night of an alarming new threat—being propositioned by swarms of gay local farmers. An Arbroath Marine, James Fletcher, said: 'They were more terrifying than the al-Qaeda. One bloke who had painted toenails was offering to paint ours. They go about hand in hand, mincing around the village.' While the Marines failed to find any al-Qaeda during the seven-day Operation Condor, they were propositioned by dozens of men in villages the troops were ordered to search.
...
Another interviewee in the article, a Marine in his 20's, stated, "It was hell... Every village we went into we got a group of men wearing make-up coming up, stroking our hair and cheeks and making kissing noises."

Cracks non-white islamist pals have been busy little bees, no?
Most American men aren't child abusers. That doesn't stop extra scrutiny at parks and schools.

Back to re-education for you!
Drago,
Leave it to whites to try and use their historical racism as the excuse for somebody's rape. You're a efil people.
And the only good black-anything is one who moons to a white guy's music?
White supremacy makes y'all so stupid,...
Crack's a reminder that even black men, who typically have their heads on their shoulders in my experience, can be dimwitted.
Muslims need to ask themselves if they want their culture to be tied to murder, mayhem, and pedophilia.
Nobody else can fix their culture for them.
Sawing off heads pays. We should be playing drone strike videos every night on the news. Especially the ones that show jihadis trying to run away.
Drago and DS, two "crackfish", don't even rise to the bait. They jump on an unbaited hook to roust Crack up so he can come to the thread and derail it.
Are they so stupid they can't be real - and are actually Crack's sockpuppets??
This essay highlights the urgent need for a strike team of child psychologists, social workers, and family counselors to temporarily saturate the precincts of Rotherham. Those children and many of their family members are at high risk of acquiring negative feelings towards the Pakistani community. While no one condones the act of gang raping a child, surely all fair minded people can see that it would be a far larger crime to let such negative feelings escalate into racial prejudice.
Cedarford, if I understand your post correctly, you're claiming that we posted without Crack having arrived? That seems to be both easily falsifiable and in fact false.
Did you know that Muhammad oversaw the beheading of as many as 900 captured Jewish tribesmen, approved of the enslavement of their women and children and that he took one of the women as a concubine?
I stumbled across this tidbit yesterday. It happened in 627 AD after conflict between Muhammad's warriors and the Jewish tribe Banu Qurayza.
If you Google this, you will find many, many citations. Historically, the only question is how many were beheaded at his command. He also personally approved of the beheading of two captured warriors after an earlier battle, Badr. The accounts also refer to taking hostages and ransoming them as part of warfare
How naive I was.
You can also find retellings of both events as children's stories of the sort that would be taught to teens and pre-teens in a church Sunday school. One can only wonder what Muslim children are taught in mosques.
Wouldn't you love to see a U.S. Senator or senior White House official recount this on television and conclude by saying, "What can you expect from adherents of a faith founded on blood"? It might be refreshing.
Unpossible! Diversity is our strength. The greater tragedy would be if this gave people the wrong idea--if it allowed racist Brits/whites cover for their hateful ideas.
HoodlumDoodlum:
Diversity through assimilation. This does not mean that you can't keep your religion, ideology, gender fluidity, ethnic prejudice, etc., but that you refrain from normalizing it in order to disrupt or corrupt the host society.
St. George:
Bias but not prejudice. Some people will assimilate, while others will seek to disrupt or corrupt. Be careful to not adopt and perpetuate the doctrines of inherited and collective sin. Liberty requires tolerance and vigilance.
After reading the topic, the name "Harry Reid" popped into my head.
But instead of Springsteen, I was inspired by "Team America" and think only an actor can save the world. Matt Damon, where are you?
Cedarford: "Are they so stupid they can't be real - and are actually Crack's sockpuppets??"
Oh look, Cedarford is upset.
Yeah, you missed the "feminism" tag.
n.n., I don't get your point. Are you saying the world is one great Hitlerian dictatorship with brownshirts and SS guards at every corner? And, whoever's job it may to oppose fundamentalist Islam, it is not the job of other Muslims because if they do speak out, the secret police will come get them? Because it sure sounds like that's what you're saying.
Your comparison to the "Good Germans" fails on every level I can think of.
Admit it Drago, you must be doing something wrong. I confront Crack and c4 and they disappear without a trace. You step up and it becomes a feeding frenzy. I ain't saying, I'm just saying...
Anyone read Lee Child's latest Jack Reacher novel Personal, yet? Much of it takes place in the UK and the major players include sophisticated gangs who control large territories, including the police. Albanians, Serbians, and native Brits jockey for position to control, among other things, girls.
Fiction, of course, but it raises the question of how Rotherham differs from early to mid-century Chicago and the Italian immigrants? IOW, is it an Islamic issue, or simply an immigration issue? Groups shut out of conventional opportunities creating their own by hook or by crook?
Islam is roughly 1400 years old. At that point in Christian history the Inquisition was yet to come into full flower. Is Islam capable of maturing into a civilized culture?
There are people who come from a Muslim culture, worship at a mosque, pray five times a day, and celebrate Muslim holidays. However, they do not read the Koran and do not follow it. You may call them moderate Muslims. Koran following Muslims call them infidels. The Koran calls for war against infidels.
Islam didn't start from nothing.
There were ancient cultures in Arabia pre-Islam, as well as the equally ancient Jews. And the Islamic Arabs conquered or co-opted numerous other Semitic peoples that formed the bulk of the first Caliphate, all of whom had long histories of civilization.
Speaking of Islam as if it were 1400 years "young" is silly. Our human societies are all the result of equally long histories.
n.n said...Diversity through assimilation.
Assimilate with what? The racist, sexist, heteronormative, homophobic host culture? If you don't respect or believe in your own cultural heritage how can you convince others to adopt your values (much less coerce them into doing so)?
Within 3 years, the following will occur:
1) There will be a play staged in either New York or London based on the events in Rotherham,
2) The play will be significantly sympathetic to the perpetrators of the sexual abuse,
3)Israel will be mentioned in some capacity.
No True Scotsman fallacy.
Christianity and Judaism have both undergone reformations. It will become necessary for Islam to also reform. This will require someone, anyone, to make the case that Western jurisprudence is superior to Sharia law. Dennis Prager asserts that if Islam is ever to reform, it will begin in the United States. I am sanguine only to the extent that I expect much more bloodletting before then.
"It fails to account for how a community once lionized as “more British than the British”
Who "lionized" these people, would that be those responsible for the cover-up?
"But Rotherham’s abusers found that their ethnicity protected them because they belonged to a community few wished to challenge."
So, that would be "Brown Privilege"
"Islam is roughly 1400 years old. At that point in Christian history the Inquisition was yet to come into full flower. Is Islam capable of maturing into a civilized culture?"
Islam is 1400 Years old? Why, any day now they will invented the art of printing.
Typical example of a nitwit using the "black legend".
Phil, not sure I have the handle, but once upon a time, when Pakistan was in India and India was part of the British Raj, the people who are either the majority, or the elite, in that area were doughty warriors. One way to get Brits to respect you is to beat them, serve them well, or at least to show fight.
Evidently Pak street cred descends largely from this history. Whether they have been of any use to man or beast since 1947 is beyond my ken.
