A fire destroyed one-and-a-half tons of potato salad...

... that was on its way to the Toledo area German American Festival.

How flammable are potatoes? And wouldn't the mayonnaise act as a fire retardant? Ah, but German potato salad is the kind without mayonnaise. It's full of bacon fat and vinegar... is that like lighter fluid on potatoes?

Anyway, don't feel sad about the festival. Volunteers stepped up to the task, and it all worked out nicely in the end.

Vinegar is 99% water. Not flammable. The oil, OTOH is combustible. I don't think oil in water emulsions are that flammable.

Mayonnaise is fat. I would expect it burns quite well.

If the building where the potato salad was stored had been made out of hickory timbers, the results might have been quite tasty.

I'm guessing the potato salad was "destroyed" as in rendered "inedible" due to the heat of the fire. Maybe the containers melted too (5 gallon plastic buckets?). Next time you are at a picnic ask the host to throw some containers of salad on the grill for awhile and see if you still want to eat it after that.

Picture of Potato Salad after fire

Doesn't look like it burned up - some dumpster diver is going to hit the jackpot.

Poor Toledo. First toxic water and now burned German potato salad. They say trouble comes in threes, so if I lived in Toledo I'd be up for a 6 month vacation.

Don't tell the USDA or FDA, this sounds like dangerous, unlicensed, uninspected, and unregulated food preparation.

German Potato salad is far superior to the mayo-based potato salad because of one thing: BACON!

As Dave Barry might say, potato salad should not be in civilian hands.

The fire might not have been near the potato salad. If it stopped the refrigerated truck from refrigerating, then that would have been enough to cause them to have to throw out the potato salad and sauerkraut.

Most Americans, while they may love their crispy breakfast strips of bacon, feel a little weird about pouring a lot of bacon grease into the potatoes… even though they slop all manner of foods up with mayonnaise, which, as noted above, is mainly fat.

The potatoes went from potating to combusting.

German Potato Salad - the real homemade thing - is unknown in the Florida Tricounty Area.

I've made it - from my dear departed mother's recipe
- for several outings and gatherings and, at first, people don't know what it is. Then they try it and rave over it.

I wonder if it isn't a Midwestern thang.

Are vinegar fumes flammable? It's not the liquid, it's the fumes.

Potato salad fries.

Redskin **giggle** potatoes?

Probably as damaged by the water putting out the fire as the fire itself. I'm guessing that at least the fire ruined any refrigeration and it spoiled.

One and a half tons of potato salad. I wonder how many calories were in that?

Could Potato salad be consider to be potating, since it's not strictly potatos any more? could it be potato saladating? We need a verb for salad being salad.

The potatoes didn't potate?

In addition to the potato salad, six 55-gallon drums of sauerkraut, as well as eggs and pickles, were lost.

An overheated refrigeration unit sent smoke and flames rolling though a permanent trailer holding 1.5 tons of the German potato salad the fest is known for. Refer: Toledo Blade, 8.23.14
