If Douglass had succeeded in promoting John C. Fremont over Lincoln for the presidency, history might have taken an alternate turn, Fremont's anti-slavery rhetoric and actions notwithstanding. Lincoln, I believe, was the man of God's choosing to lead.
Sins against God are handled quite well by God Himself.
Thank goodness for Abraham Lincoln and his political party. Without them Frederick Douglas' words might still be true today. Heck, another political party tried to block legislation to right America's wrongs 90 years after losing a Civil War.
If only the names of those political parties had not been lost to history we might discern some common thread.
In 1852 that statement was only mildly hyperbolic. Is there a reason why your son chooses to ignore 162 years of history, Althouse? Because a reasonable person might note that more than twice as many years have elapsed between when Douglass wrote that diatribe and today, than between the founding of the Republic and the day he wrote it (the phrase "four score and seven years ago" would be spoken 11 years later).
"To say we've made considerable progress would be an understatement."
Yeah and you'll pat yourself on the back 'til your arm's broke. We can't even hear ourselves say it, you're so busy giving yourself credit. Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile, but what great folks you are, right?
Now I know why she coddles Crack...apparently the Althouse clan believes we are still living in the mid 19th century, and that the last 150 never happened.
"I wonder what Frederick Douglass would say about present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans . . . ad nauseam"
Once he discovered most whites didn't stop discriminating until I was approaching my teen years, I think, he'd be just as disgusted, as any other black American.
"1852. 600,000 whites died 10 years later, half of them to free the slaves."
Then - a mere 12 years later - America abandoned what all that fighting was for, reneged on it's reparations promises, and embarked on another 100 years of terrorism.
If Americans want to see a good perspective of this country, just travel somewhere in the 3rd world and you will see the true nature of humanity. Only then will the sniveling Baby Boomer angst of life not being fair take perspective. The culture that created our great country is rarely appreciated by many living fat off of it.
"Thank goodness for Abraham Lincoln and his political party. Without them Frederick Douglas' words might still be true today. Heck, another political party tried to block legislation to right America's wrongs 90 years after losing a Civil War.

I love it - no thanks to blacks for winning their own freedom and making the Constitution mean something. Hell, Speilberg even left Douglass out of the movie "LIncoln," that's how accurate the white view of what's "been lost to history" is. Face it, Berkil:
AIn't nothing "lost to history" - you don't like history because it doesn't reflect well on whites - so you claim we're all confused. But blacks aren't confused.
We know the party's history, and the Republicans blew it, and they'll continue to be racist to anyone who reminds them of that fact.
Which is how we know - no matter what you call yourselves - it's still you,...
"Is there a reason why your son chooses to ignore 162 years of history, Althouse?"
Because Jim Crow lasted for the rest of that time - pretty much up until I was a teen - and the conditions of black America's lives aren't that different.
White resistance is still a MAJOR factor in black lives.
Crack, the only thing I blame you for is being such a relentless bitch-ass whiner. I cannot recall a single history of a single nation past or present, that celebrates a people for being the all-time complainers, perhaps the future history of America will laud African-Americans for this singular achievement.
Stop being so pathetic and learn to weld, or something else useful. Yes, the past sucked for Negroes, but now, you are the most cosseted Negroes on the fucking planet. And what do we get? Bitch, bitch, bitch.
Pre-Civil Rights era, my heroes were Bob Gibson and Lou Brock, Chuck Berry was the king of St. Louis rock and roll, and Dick Gregory had the ever-lasting balls to pen "Nigger". Those were some cultural achievements right there, from one fucking city alone. Maybe a return to actual oppression would wise you up.
"Now I know why she coddles Crack...apparently the Althouse clan believes we are still living in the mid 19th century, and that the last 150 never happened."
Or, or, OR:
1) She DOES know what the last 150 years was about, and continual progress wasn't it, but white terrorism was.
2) She thinks, if blacks have been deprived of a voice, why should she bother silencing me - as so many who don't like blacks, here, have suggested? I mean, contrary to popular white beliefs, I didn't stop being black once I started blogging. Whites just like to pretend a lot.
Now I know why she coddles Crack...apparently the Althouse clan believes we are still living in the mid 19th century, and that the last 150 never happened.
This has been self-evident for some time now, but I'm glad you finally noticed. I speculated once that there must be some deep dark event or secret in that family's past which drives this quasi-religious flagellation.
"If Americans want to see a good perspective of this country, just travel somewhere in the 3rd world and you will see the true nature of humanity."
If you can find one of those places, that got that way without white intervention, I'll be glad to accept your view of "the true nature of humanity." If not, then you're being ahistorical, and are spreading a lie - designed to prop up whites and hurt their victims further.
Good job - the racist whites of the past would be proud - of their work.
"Only then will the sniveling Baby Boomer angst of life not being fair take perspective."
Been there - America is still a fucked-up hypocritical lie covered in blood.
"The culture that created our great country is rarely appreciated by many living fat off of it."
That's because "the culture that created our great country" was barbarous to blacks for being black, stole our labor, and lies about it.
Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse, and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me, that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival. ...
For comparison, had Douglas ever traveled to the home of slavery, Africa?
Sounds like with fame and mobility he instead became a creature of Washington DC, European speaking tours and white female companions.
Crack, you're blinded by your own bitterness. When I said "we've made considerable progress" I meant "we the country" that includes all of us, white, black, yellow, red, brown. I wasn't patting anyone on the back, just making a statement about the country. You poor, lost soul, you.
"Whatever else is responsible for the breakup of the family, it is inescapably the case that the official prejudice against religion in education has played a large, perhaps even decisive role. The Playboy philosophy, explicitly regnant in the sixties, may have appealed to the younger generation as the key to hedonism, but hedonism is not the key to happiness, and the wretchedness that blights so many families--white certainly, but predominantly black--has much to do with the nakedness of the public square, in which for generations there were men and women who spoke the language of duty and morality, of loyalty and obligation. And licentious engagements in hedonism are more readily outgrown in the more disciplined classes than in those less self-reliant." - WFB P. 183 Happy Days Were Here Again
From what I gather from the media here is the list of things America needs to address, in descending order of attention:
Gay marriage Women's contraception Women's inequality Global Warming Income inequality and the rich Immigration rights Koch Brothers Government-provided healthcare Transsexual rights Gun control Body issues and the norm National surveillance excesses Catholics on the Supreme Court Organic foods Facebook privacy US Economy War and the Middle East Bedbugs* The plight of blacks in America*
Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile ...
And who put them there and who keeps them there if not Blacks themselves and their allies in the Democrat party? What you call my "racism" is my ongoing anger and frustration that you and others of your race absolutely refuse to grow up, be a man, and accept responsibility for your own actions.
Back in the early 1960s, when I demonstrated for civil rights, I was so offended that the Jim Crow type of white kept referring to grown Black men as "boy." But now that I am in my 60s I realize that you and way too many other Black people really do think like children.
What would good old Fred say about a black president if we could go back in time. I'd imagine it would be the similar to what happened when Marty Mcfly went back tto in time to the 50’s and Doc Borian asked him who the president was and he said Ronald Reagan.
Still, let's put it into historical context. At the time, I'd imagine Fred had a point considering the times. But as D'sluza points out. The greatness of this country is thst we have it within ourselves to correct injustice because of our inherent rights. MLK didn't have to ask for a new right to allow for blacks to be incorporated into society, he merely had to point out our own inherent values, which rightly who'd allow for desegregation.
The problem with the left is that they never forget the Fred Douglas narrative and conveniently ignore all the ways we've moved past it. Its as if history never occurred. You can hear it in all of cracks's rants. But in most lefty critiques.
Crack wrote: Whites are so determined to blame blacks for SOMETHING - while skirting blame for white's almost 3 centuries of awfulness - they'll say anything.
those whites back in the day were awful! but even then there were those that fought against the idea of slavery. Why can you boot acknowledge the good those whites did. History has moved ever forward, and more and more has been lifted for blacks so that now they can sit in govt, there is no segregation and we have prominent blacks in all industries.
I love it - no thanks to blacks for winning their own freedom and making the Constitution mean something.
You mean like the ones that fought for the Confederate Army against the Union?
Ain't history grand?
Take all the credit you want for blacks winning their freedom.
Also be prepared to accept all the blame deserved for still living shitty lives, instead of still blaming whites for any lack of drive and motivation to leave a shitty life behind within your community.
I think the next dialogue on race in America needs to be an alternate Madison, Wisconsin event moderated by the great Ann Althouse, documented by Laurence Meade. I pledge to appear in person and pay the air ticket for Crack.
" Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile,..." Perhaps those that are should stop choosing to be there. Stop choosing to put themselves there. Stop whining about what they actively do to themselves. Perhaps they should look at their hatemongering leaders , Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakhan, Wright, Jackson-Lee, and their ilk and ask why those people work in ways to punish blacks. They should ask themselves why they still support those leaders whom profit and personally benefit from actively keeping black people interminably in crushing poverty. Perhaps instead of expecting everyone else to help them from their self inflicted dystopia and blaming everyone except those who deserve blame, i.e. themselves, they should look in the mirror and tell themselves, admit, that they fucked up. That they are responsible for their position and condition. But, neither they nor you are capable of that level of honesty or introspection. " present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans " are the result of decades of liberal policies ,and black leaders collusion, to create exactly what those cities, their communities, and their populations are today. They are the direct result of what you, the black community, have chosen to be. For that and more you have no one to blame but the face you see in the mirror every single morning.
Here's the deal, liberals: You wear your sackcloth and ashes quietly and refrain from any sort of public statement on July 4. In return, we'll give you your own holiday where you can light off firecrackers and write treatises to celebrate how much better you are than America.
She thinks, if blacks have been deprived of a voice, why should she bother silencing me -
Because you are an asshole who constantly hijacks threads and contributes little.
as so many who don't like blacks, here, have suggested?
Again, we want you moderated because you are an asshole, not because you are Black. Althouse is the one who is being racist, by tolerating behavior from you she would not from a White racist.
"This has been self-evident for some time now, but I'm glad you finally noticed. I speculated once that there must be some deep dark event or secret in that family's past which drives this quasi-religious flagellation."
Of course, you're talking about you own mind. But do tell! I'm interested. Specify your speculation. What "dark" things do you picture in the Althouse woodpile.
In the 50's thru 60's, blacks still had intact families and work ethic as a whole. Then the Dems realized that with welfare and other give-aways they could buy their votes. So the blacks sold their votes and reaped.... misery, broken lives. And now we are in the 3rd generation of those broken lives. The blacks who blame whites are half right -- they need to blame the blacks and the whites who sold them in to Dem Party slavery. The way out? It is individual, but first you have to take responsibility for doing it yourself.
Of course, you're talking about you own mind. But do tell! I'm interested. Specify your speculation. What "dark" things do you picture in the Althouse woodpile.
That's just it. We don't know.
I picture vbspurs, standing outside your door, in the following clip: Cold Comfort Farm
"At last the out-spread wings of the American Eagle afford shelter and protection to men of all colors, all countries and climes, and the long oppressed black man may honorably fall or gloriously flourish under the star-spangled banner. [Applause.] I stand here tonight not only as a colored man and an American, but by the express decision of the Attorney-General of the United States, as a colored citizen, having, in common with all other citizens, a stake in the safety, prosperity, honor, and glory of a common country [Cheering.] We are all liberated by this proclamation. Everybody is liberated. The white man is liberated, the black man is liberated, the brave men now fighting the battles of their country against rebels and traitors are now liberated…"
Frederick Douglas, in celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation.
"Crack, the only thing I blame you for is being such a relentless bitch-ass whiner."
Because nothing says "I've got it bad and you're the part of the reason why" like being quiet about it. What a funny expectation.
"Stop being so pathetic and learn to weld, or something else useful."
That'll bring back our stolen wealth, restore our faith in America, and make a world of prejudice and discrimination go away. I'll tell all the unemployed black guys I know who - clearly - may be graceful as birds, otherwise, but become "all thumbs" when it comes to handling tools around white guys.
"Yes, the past sucked for Negroes, but now, you are the most cosseted Negroes on the fucking planet. And what do we get? Bitch, bitch, bitch."
You really don't understand the concept, of white America's generational plunder of blacks, do you? Listen to yourself, talking about "the past sucked". Does this look like success to you? It's where I live now. Here's part of what you miss:
"As time went on, I built up a tremendous respect, in a way, for the kids in the gangs because with hardly any guidance and no positive role models, they were raising themselves to be self-sufficient in any way they could be. ,...It seemed as though many gang members just slipped into the depths of this dark criminal society because they were extremely angry and depressed about their struggles, and to realize that was a heavy understanding to cope with.
…They held no respect for the elders, or anybody around them, and concurrently held an angry self-entitlement to making a living for themselves and their family by any means necessary. Spending time in the community helped me understand their situation in a much deeper sense."
You don't care to understand at all, thinking your petty frustrations - with listening - supersede everything.
"Pre-Civil Rights era, my heroes were Bob Gibson and Lou Brock, Chuck Berry was the king of St. Louis rock and roll, and Dick Gregory had the ever-lasting balls to pen "Nigger". Those were some cultural achievements right there, from one fucking city alone. Maybe a return to actual oppression would wise you up."
Watch what you wish for. And, yeah, like Dick Gregory would have a problem with my stance today. Are you on drugs?
"Repatriation plane ticket still available."
So I can live broke somewhere else, too? Man - white people must have nothing better to do than dream up new tortures for negroes,...
Love, Oso
What's love got to do with it?
Give back the stolen money and A) blacks will respect the country and B) I'll buy my own damn plane ticket,...
Genuflecting before the Mau-Mauing black demagogue appears to be the Althouse family tradition. Sort of like a Tom Wolfe novel.
Of course, the difference here is that Althouse is extremely clever about getting herself and her kiddies in on the goodies of the oppression religion. First, it was feminism, which got her on the gravy train, then it was gaydom, which got her son on the gravy train.
You've got to admire that scam. If I had any sense, I would have declared myself a flaming fag decades ago and raked in the loot. The oppression sweepstakes is where the money and influence resides, and Althouse is a pro.
Althouse is all about playing and winning the game of office politics. I never wanted to be in a fucking office, so my goal in life was just to tolerate the bullshit and go home. So, prof, you can have it. I don't want it.
But a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have become unfashionable. The arm of commerce has borne away the gates of the strong city. Intelligence is penetrating the darkest corners of the globe. It makes its pathway over and under the sea, as well as on the earth. Wind, steam, and lightning are its chartered agents. Oceans no longer divide, but link nations together. From Boston to London is now a holiday excursion. Space is comparatively annihilated. Thoughts expressed on one side of the Atlantic are distinctly heard on the other. .
Sound familiar?
Douglass was a great man, both a man of action and a powerful thinker on race and subjects that transcended race.
" What "dark" things do you picture in the Althouse woodpile."
Who knew Althouse was an out an out racist? My uncle used that expression regularly back in the 60s when I was a small child, and the "dark thing" in the woodpile was referred to by a word that has worn out its welcome in polite society. I guess he didn't really use the Shakespearean reference "Something's rotten in Denmark" which was the common expression the rest of us used to express the same thought.
He also lived in a trailer which we kids thought was cool because it was like "camping" all the time.
Crack wrote: Take all the credit you want for blacks winning their freedom.
Technically blacks couldn't win their freedom since whites were in govt. Whites had to grant them their freedom. So, give props to the whites who agreed that the situation was wrong and needed to be addressed.
I reject the notion of a "woodpile" because it implies some guilt which could be passed from one generation to the next.
There is no "Althouse woodpile". There is only Ann Althouse; she is responsible only for herself. The "one drop" rule was and remains an abomination. It is wrong as a legal matter. It is wrong as a moral matter.
No I'm not. I just won't take my eye off the point, no matter how many lies you tell to make yourself feel better - the facts are against you.
"When I said "we've made considerable progress" I meant "we the country" that includes all of us, white, black, yellow, red, brown."
I don't give a fuck about your "progress" - my life sucks while you're doing it. Blacks should be free by now. We shouldn't have to wait, with our lives on hold, until whites make up their minds to be civil or just.
Visit the nation's ghettos, and Indian reservations, and tell them of how glad you are for everybody else's "progress" as they spend black's money on occupied native's land.
You delude yourself to the true nature of evil in the mechanics of your beliefs.
"I wasn't patting anyone on the back, just making a statement about the country. You poor, lost soul, you."
You don't know the country. You know a lie. You know the good parts - and that's being generous - leaving the horror for others to wallow in, alone, cut so far off from society you can deny those citizens of these United States exist at all, hidden as you crow of our "progress".
I'm lost? Dude, you're so far down the racial rabbit hole, I don't even know if following your droppings back out will help,...
"" Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile,..." Ultimately what happens in life is based on the work put in. Govt can make public schools, but if you don't attend class or study you're not going to do well. Similarly, govt can pass laws that say businesses can't discriminate but if you are not skilled or don't put in the effort, or never finished high school i'ts going to dictate your life's trajectory. So, unless you want govt taking tests for you, you have to do it yourself.
I go back to James Brown. "I don't want nobody to give me nothing. Open up the door, I'll get it myself" I was never sure if he was saying he would open the door and get it himself or society should just open the door and then he would get it himself. Regardless, society DID open the door. And he got for himself and did quite well. Self reliance goes along way, and if you have any plans on being middle class or better and are not, that's the ONLY way you will succeed. You're going to have to get a job. You're going to have to do well in school. It wont' be handed to you.
I wish more blacks hadn't abandoned James Browns idea of self empowerment and instead embraced the gimme culture of the left that infantilizes them. "Oh, the poor blacks they need the help of the beneficent whites because they are incapable of doing for themselves." Bull crap. Get off your butt, stop whining, and do for yourself. Youre capable. And that means you Crack.
And if you don't, no one else is going to do it for you.
"The Playboy philosophy, explicitly regnant in the sixties, may have appealed to the younger generation as the key to hedonism, but hedonism is not the key to happiness, and the wretchedness that blights so many families--white certainly, but predominantly black--has much to do with the nakedness of the public square, in which for generations there were men and women who spoke the language of duty and morality, of loyalty and obligation. I have said, many times, the hippies did NOT create the country blacks marched to join,...
And here you can read Douglass' speech AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. Here he sings the wonders of America. Here's just a portion of it: "Color is no longer a crime or a badge of bondage. At last the out-spread wings of the American Eagle afford shelter and protection to men of all colors, all countries and climes, and the long oppressed black man may honorably fall or gloriously flourish under the star-spangled banner. The white man is liberated, the black man is liberated, the brave men now fighting the battles of their country against rebels and traitors are now liberated, and may strike with all their might, even if they do hurt the Rebels, at their most sensitive point. [Applause.] I congratulate you upon this amazing change—the amazing approximation toward the sacred truth of human liberty. All the space between man’s mind and God’s mind, says Parker, is crowded with truths that wait to be discovered and organized into law for the better government of society. Mr. Lincoln has not exactly discovered a new truth, but he has dared, in this dark hour of national peril, to apply an old truth, long ago acknowledged in theory by the nation—a truth which carried the American people safely through the war for independence, and one which will carry us, as I believe, safely through the present terrible and sanguinary conflict for national life, if we shall but faithfully live up to that great truth."
“[I]n regard to the colored people, there is always more that is benevolent, I perceive, than just, manifested towards us. What I ask for the negro is not benevolence, not pity, not sympathy, but simply justice. The American people have always been anxious to know what they shall do with us . . . I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are worm-eaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! . . . And if the negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone! . . . [Y]our interference is doing him positive injury.” — Frederick Douglass, What the Black Man Wants: An Address Delivered in Boston, Massachusetts, on 26 January 1865, reprinted in 4 The Frederick Douglass Papers 59, 68 (J. Blassingame & J. McKivigan eds. 1991) (emphasis in original).
But your fathers, who had not adopted the fashionable idea of this day, of the infallibility of government, and the absolute character of its acts, presumed to differ from the home government in respect to the wisdom and the justice of some of those burdens and restraints. They went so far in their excitement as to pronounce the measures of government unjust, unreasonable, and oppressive, and altogether such as ought not to be quietly submitted to. I scarcely need say, fellow-citizens, that my opinion of those measures fully accords with that of your fathers. Such a declaration of agreement on my part would not be worth much to anybody. It would certainly prove nothing as to what part I might have taken had I lived during the great controversy of 1776. To say now that America was right, and England wrong, is exceedingly easy. Everybody can say it; the dastard, not less than the noble brave, can flippantly discant on the tyranny of England towards the American Colonies....The cause of liberty may be stabbed by the men who glory in the deeds of your fathers. -Frederick Douglass
I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union, and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil. I don't oppose all wars. -Barack Obama
Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too-great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory. -Frederick Douglass, in part of the same speech that jaltcoh didn't feel was worth quoting
"Who put them [at the bottom] and who keeps them there if not Blacks themselves and their allies in the Democrat party?"
White plunder and white supremacy stole our wealth, Mike - nobody but you cares what party you're from when doing it. Democrats before, Republicans later - white supremacy is both of your problems.
"What you call my "racism" is my ongoing anger and frustration that you and others of your race absolutely refuse to grow up, be a man, and accept responsibility for your own actions."
When America sets an example, we'll be happy to follow it - get blacks the money back that was stolen with the blessing of the government you support. If not, you and those like you have no ethical or moral standing blacks are in any way predisposed or obligated to respect in return.
That's called "Playing Fair" - I heard white Americans were supposedly into that. Something about baseball, I think.
"Back in the early 1960s, when I demonstrated for civil rights, I was so offended that the Jim Crow type of white kept referring to grown Black men as "boy." But now that I am in my 60s I realize that you and way too many other Black people really do think like children."
Because, now that you don't march any more, you imagine the problem's over - like those of us who are no position to stop should be helping YOU out. Want me to come over and wipe your troubled brow?
That would've been a likely job, for me, not too long ago. As Bill Clinton said, the president would've been getting him coffee - not Thomas Jefferson but William Jefferson - showing how far we've REALLY come. So far that you've stopped marching.
Which means you think, in less than a single generation, you've solved all the problems I face in this land with a 400 year history, and practice, of discriminating against me and mine. That'll never the problem, in your view, as you whip out that old racist canard about blacks having a child-like nature and mental capacity, is that it?
"Now grow up, asshole."
Man, for an old civil rights guy, progress sure looks a LOT different from the other end of your telescope,...
Frederick Douglass also was a great speaker. Wonderful use of language.
Crack on one side, and several others on the other side, may consider the "Black" community on Cape Cod, who reportedly got somewhat dismayed when President Obama decided to vacation there as they felt he and his entourage definitely lowered the tone of the place by their presence.
Now, take the Constitution according to its plain reading, and I defy the presentation of a single pro-slavery clause in it. On the other hand, it will be found to contain principles and purposes, entirely hostile to the existence of slavery. -Frederick Douglass
The Democrats have lost their fight to continue chattel slavery, but their war against the Constitution continues; and to attack it, they steal the words of one of their enemies, and use his denunciation of slavery to suggest that patriotism itself is "a sham...an unholy license...swelling vanity".
""Color is no longer a crime or a badge of bondage. " Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile,..." Perhaps those that are should stop choosing to be there. Stop choosing to put themselves there.
I am convinced not a single one of you "informed commenters" has read The Case For Reparations because you're making arguments it addressed.
Still talking exclusively of "the past" like anything's stopped.
It's crazy-making, to talk to so many ignorant whites, when the article just came out two months ago.
I mean, there is NO WAY an intelligent person could understand the discriminatory government practice of "redlining" and say blacks are "choosing to put themselves there" - but, here you are, saying just that.
Maybe you "should stop choosing to be" part of the problem, Larry,...

Man, I forgot that one. GREAT quote. He's describing exactly how liberals are patronizing blacks by assuming they can't stand on their own to feet. If Crack doesn't want to hear it from a white guy, then he should listen to it from Frederick Douglas. It's time for blacks to stand on their own two legs. Many have been standing by the way despite the grievance merchants saying all is doom and gloom and this is nothing but a rotten country.
You are an asshole who constantly hijacks threads and contributes little.
But the historical perspective - of brutality and injustice you guys leave out - as you celebrate it with hot dogs and beer.
Again, we want you moderated because you are an asshole, not because you are Black.
But I AM BLACK, Gahrie. And there's a history. A history any decent person would be pissed about - especially if it weighed on YOUR LIFE. But you want to deprive me of that - too. You want to even control my emotions, just as you do Ann's blog, or her relationship to me and my participation. Control has always been the racist's problem, Gahrie, whether here or in South Africa.
Let it go, you can't win.
"Althouse is the one who is being racist, by tolerating behavior from you she would not from a White racist."
Because, as you love to ignore, the whites are carrying on a tradition.
Of course, you're talking about you own mind. But do tell! I'm interested. Specify your speculation. What "dark" things do you picture in the Althouse woodpile.
That's just it. We don't know.
I betcha you could make a pretty disgusting gumbo with all the dreck that gets cooked up in that head of yours.
If you can tell me - honestly - that, after making that speech, Douglass throws D'Souza in prison, I am there,...
Isn't D'Souza black? Sure looks it from his picture. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/75/Dinesh_D%27Souza.jpg/220px-Dinesh_D%27Souza.jpg
Certainly darker than Obama. Darker than Eric Holder, too.
Didn't come to America from the Atlantic slave trade (like you did, Crack?).
His ancestors were probably sold into slavery in Africa by other blacks and shipped to India. His ancestors were the in the lucky minority. They survived the journey. Lucky again, they then survived slavery long enough to have descendants.
So doesn't that make him black like you?
Can't you cut a brother a break?
Or are you jealous of a successful black man?
Or perhaps you think the natural place for black men is in prison?
So, has anyone seen the ad for Survivor's Remorse, the new show on Starz? One of the main characters is accepting an award and says something like, "I want to thank my mama for not aborting me."
The show is about 2 kids who grew up on the rough streets of Philly and made it.
'Each colored voter of the State should say in Scripture phrase, "may my hand forget it's cunning and my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth" [Psalm 137:5-6] if ever I raise my voice or give my vote for the nominees of the Democratic Party.' (The Lessons of Emancipation to the New Generation - August 3, 1880)
In agreement with black republican Rep. Joseph Hayne Rainey who said the following (1872):
'You gentlemen on the Democratic side of the House have voted against all the ...amendments of the Constitution and the civil rights laws enforcing the same. Why did you do it? I answer, because those measures had a tendency to give to the poor Negro his just rights...and give him freedom of speech, freedom of action, and the opportunity of education, that he might elevate himself to the dignity of manhood. Now you come to us and say that you are our best friends. We would that we could look upon you as such. We would that your votes as recorded...from day to day could only demonstrate it. But your votes, your actions, and the constant cultivation of your cherished prejudices prove to the Negroes of the entire country that the Democrats are in opposition to them: and if the Democrats could have sway [have their way], our race would have no foothold here...The Democratic Party many woo us, they may court us and try to get us to worship at their shrine, but I will tell the gentleman that we are Republicans by instinct, and we will be Republicans as long as God will allow our proper sense to hold sway over us.' ---------------------------
If both men were alive today, they would say the Negro's tongue is cleaving to the roof of his mouth and he has lost all proper sense.
"Technically blacks couldn't win their freedom since whites were in govt."
O.K. - Technically blacks can't win their reparations since whites outnumber us and all polling shows they hate the idea.
BTW - now we're down to technicalities, are we? A far cry from your arguments defending the KKK. You're losing your grip, jr.
"Whites had to grant them their freedom."
Whites will have to grant us reparations.
"So, give props to the whites who agreed that the situation was wrong and needed to be addressed."
But agreed with who, jr? Themselves, for agreeing to something for the nation's redemptive good, or the thousands of blacks who have carried and protected it, like a flame in a strong wind of white resistance, for over 150 years?
Don't keep getting the story wrong:
Blacks are the architects of our own freedom.
Whites, insisting on getting the story wrong, are still a HUGE part of the problem,...
"...every hour sees the black man elbowed out of employment by some newly arrived emigrant......
As a black man, we say if we cannot stand up, Let us fall down. We desire to be a man among men while we do live; and when we cannot, we wish to die. It is evident, painfully evident to every reflecting mind, that the means of living, for colored men, are becoming more and more precarious and limited. Employments and callings, formerly monopolized by us, are so no longer. White men are becoming house-servants, cooks and stewards on vessels - at hotels. They are becoming porters, stevedores, wood-sawyers, hod-carriers, brick makers, white-washers and barbers, so that the blacks can scarcely find the means of subsistence - a few years ago, and a white barber would have been a curiosity - now their poles stand on every street....... ...Without the means of living, life is a curse, and leaves at the mercy of the oppressor to become his debased slaves. F. Douglass, March 4, 1853
Hey Crack, Obama has opened the border and the NYT reported that besides the 50k illegal children, they have allowed in and dumped 240,000 illegal adults.
The unemployment rate for black men and youth is staggering but you keep bleating about handouts -- it only emphasizes the chains that bind you to your master.
Of human bondage makes a good theme. IMO that is always the issue. Who runs today's crews of slaves/serfs/cheap laborers/ illegal" Hispanic fugitives from deportation?
The answer is the wealthy that play by insider connections and political favors.
The Roman Empire was 90% slaves.
The British Monarchy took up Rome's old ways overseas. The Scots-Irish had to stop them using their weapons and guts when King George announced that as his plan for us.
The Union guys stopped that in the Secessionist States for 4 bloody years, and after Atlanta surrendered to Sherman they reelected Lincoln.
Labor unions stopped that in the industrial age.
After WWII Truman integrated the Military and Martin Luther's name sake, MLK Jr, took up freedom and won the segregationist battle only 50 years ago.
The issue is not yesterday's slaves reparations. It's today's slaves being released from government dependence, which depends in turn on:
1) Cheap electrical energy that supports food growing and distribution, and
2)a strong dollar, and
3) a strong military force, and
4) the oldie but goody freedoms of speech, and of the practice of our religion, and of bearing arms
So Crack and all Americans need to be standing up to the Marxist Destroyers of all 4 listed above, including the one we now call President.
If you can tell me - honestly - that, after making that speech, Douglass throws D'Souza in prison, I am there,...
D'Souza is a naturalized American citizen, from India. Dude, not even you can blame the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent for whatever is your beef today.
"I reject the notion of a "woodpile" because it implies some guilt which could be passed from one generation to the next."
So, yesterday, it was practically mandatory to feel collective pride in a single historical event but, point out the government has acted against blacks for 400 years - which anyone can see the results of - and, all of a sudden, good ol' Birkel and other whites are individuals, again, collectively free to exempt themselves from all national responsibility.
Whites grant themselves, alone, the freedom to ignore what emotions America's negative actions throughout history conjure. Collective amnesia in a sea of resulting suffering.
Ta-Nehisi Coates called it "Patriotism a la Carte'". Birkel wasn't around during WWI, but you don't hear him bitching about paying the soldier's pensions. Or, if he's not old enough for WWII, Japanese reparations for internment - I've heard no complaint.
But let the government have acted against blacks for 400 years - which anyone can see the results of - and, all of a sudden, good ol' patriot Birkel and other whites are transformed into individuals, free to exempt themselves from all national responsibility and ready to take up arms to do it.
Wow - That's a fine example of white entitlement (You think WHITES should be able to feel that way), based on white privilege (You think whites SHOULD be able to feel that way) because of white supremacy (Who's going to stop whites from feeling any damn way they want?) resulting in white racist actions.
wimpy chick was hoping so badly that althouse was this hot conservative law professor at uw madison....but then she voted for Obama and he was devastated-like he is with Sullivan.
po limpy dicky chick. jobless, unemployable, unfuckable and psychotic with a huge amount of passive/agressive thrown in.
run away little chick there is a gay but with something in it you need to obsess about for weeks on end...sarah palin, sullivanist.
Why don't y'all quote something from Douglass after Reconstruction was over?
"I hope and trust all will come out right in the end, but the immediate future looks dark and troubled. I cannot shut my eyes to the ugly facts before me."
- Frederick Douglass, 1894
And, if you guys were really up on American history, you'd know Douglass' pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps nonsense was rejected by blacks once W.E.B. Du Bois came on the scene - and Du Bois was proved right - so why keep acting like blacks are doing it wrong?
It's not America which is hypocritical. America was right in principle and often in practice. It's the pro-choice faction which is hypocritical. In that respect, nothing has changed. Both moral and natural principles remain negotiable to the end where they create moral hazards.
Titus said... wimpy chick was hoping so badly that althouse was this hot conservative law professor at uw madison...
It's interesting that you would project that, Titus. I think credible witnesses would say otherwise. However, the fact that you say this speaks volumes.
Why don't you just drop your mask and punch it out?
"Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us!
"Man, I forgot that one. GREAT quote. He's describing exactly how liberals are patronizing blacks by assuming they can't stand on their own to feet."
But jr, whites didn't leave us alone. They formed the KKK, made Birth Of A Nation, lynched us in mass killing parties and passed laws to deprive us of our rights.
Did you also "forget" all that?
"If Crack doesn't want to hear it from a white guy, then he should listen to it from Frederick Douglas. It's time for blacks to stand on their own two legs."
Yep, it's over 100 years of American history but, I guess, you "forgot". Again - here's Douglass in 1894 - a mere 30 years later:
"I cannot shut my eyes to the ugly facts before me."
Go wave "that GREAT quote" around, too, jr, the next time you decide whites should tell blacks anything.
Titus, so glad to have this opportunity...if you post sexually harassing comments at my friends at Lem's you will be permanently banned from my threads. You're tired, guy.
"If both men were alive today, they would say the Negro's tongue is cleaving to the roof of his mouth and he has lost all proper sense.
Shame on you Crack."
For what? Being a registered Republican who is proud of not only freeing the slaves but understands that ain't shit if we don't finish the job?
Being a registered Republican who knows history better than you?
You actually think Republicans, advocating for Douglass' outdated pre-Reconstruction ideas, brings shame on blacks, today, who know they're uninformed?
Read your Du Bois and you'll see how silly Douglass sounded by 1900 or so,...
More outdated, pre-Reconstruction Douglass quotes. Amazing.
"Hey Crack, Obama has opened the border and the NYT reported that besides the 50k illegal children, they have allowed in and dumped 240,000 illegal adults.
The unemployment rate for black men and youth is staggering but you keep bleating about handouts -- it only emphasizes the chains that bind you to your master."
No, it emphasizes whites will hire anyone but blacks,...
"D'Souza is a naturalized American citizen, from India. Dude, not even you can blame the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent for whatever is your beef today."
I get it - so like, when he became an American, he only joined the good parts, right?
He joined Independence from the British - but not America's financial dependence on, and foundation of, slavery?
He joined Thanksgiving - but not The Trail Of Tears?
He joined the nation that brought us the G.I. Bill - but not the Jim Crow laws and policies that ensured blacks couldn't take part?
Listen, other than sounding like a nut job, let me know how he joined only some of America because - as a citizen who has to grapple with the truth of the whole thing - I might want to get in on a little of that action myself,…
I think that Douglass may not have known exactly how bad the conditions were on South American slave plantations. Awful as the antebellum South was, I'd wager that Brazil was much worse.
Somebody on this thread loves the old Louisiana rule about "one drop" of blood in a woodpile and would cast blame on all progeny forevermore!
I reject that notion. I reject it even though I would be owed more, as a Native American, than any other subgroup of Americans. I reject that notion because the devastation of the mind evidenced on this thread when one adopts the notion of inherited guilt. Thinking that way is poisonous because there is no rational stopping point. Thinking that way is the slipperiest slope.
We are all witnesses to the obvious mania produced.
More from the Douglass speech that jaltcoh didn't think worth quoting -- and it even began the last paragraph he quoted:
Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery. "The arm of the Lord is not shortened," and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from "the Declaration of Independence," the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age.
Crack, I believe that the legacy of slavery will curse this country far past my lifetime. Just out of curiosity, give me a short list of white people I should try to emulate, and a short reason why. Regards, Larry
If you're a broke failure, of course it's tempting to hang out on a blog and blame society, racism, anyone but yourself. So maybe you're 100% correct....what do you gain by complaining endlessly about it? If you believe what you say, forget about reparations, forget about society making it easier for you. It's never going to happen. By being paralyzed into inaction (aside from the prolific bitching), you're letting racist society beat you. How much sweeter would success be when you know it came solely from your own efforts?
You've really got to be an asshole to feature anti-American speech snippets on the 4th of July. Like going to someone's birthday party and pissing on their carpet. Listen progressive shitheads, after WWII Americans introduced the Marshall Plan and the Soviets instituted the Iron Curtain. The fact that the White House Press Secretary adorns his home with Soviet propaganda posters should infuriate Americans and disgust the people of Europe and Asia. The fact that hardly anyone even noticed should alarm the world. Listen democrat party idiots, in Iraq and Afghanistan the US military toppled tyrannical socially repressive regimes and dedicated themselves to wiping out the kind of scumbags who throw acid in little girls faces and chop off their noses for going to school. In between military engagements, the US armed forces builds schools and roads and improves infrastructure in third world hell-holes that can't seem to help themselves. When there's a catastrophe anywhere in the world, such as the tsunami that wiped out a quarter of a million people in Indonesia, the US and its armed forces are the first responders and primary caregivers. It's a thankless job too often, but to have a whiny liberal bitch cut-and-paste 170 year old quotes and calumny on our nation's birthday is just a slap in the face too far. Jaltcoh, you are nothing but an obstinately ignorant democrat party tool.
Firstly, the Douglas's quotation is hyperbole at its' finest - considering that 90% of the slaves sent to the Caribbean or South American died from overwork or disease compared to an increasing population of slaves in the USA from births (not importation). The American slave importation was only around 5-6 % of the total number of slaves brought into the Americas.
The seconds point is the contention that the Civil War was fought over freeing the slaves. If it had been advertise as that, there would have been precious little support for going to war. It's telling that in the period before the Civil War that the abolitionists never tried the simple measure of just buying slaves and setting them free. There had been no importation of slaves since the early 1800s - so the trade was strictly in people residing in the US. But the reality was that no one would contribute anything like the funds needed - so it became a "moral" issue.
Spin it all you want Crack - you got sold out by your own people in Africa - both to the Americans and to the Arab lands (which is still going on today).
Fred could have left the good ol' USA - with all its horrible white people - and gone back to Africa. Liberia was set up for that purpose. He could have been an African King. Instead, he just wanted to stay in the USA and bitch and moan.
What about you Crack, why don't you go back to Africa? No whites, just black men like you're self. You could be an African King.
"discriminatory government practice of "redlining" and say blacks are "choosing to put themselves there" " Bullshit. They have chosen to NOT get an education, chosen to NOT learn marketable job skills, chosen to NOT support their families, children, chosen to NOT exhibit responsible behavior. What they have chosen to do is wait and expect someone else to pay the bill and take the responsibility. The rotted out inner city neighborhoods are the direct result of these behaviors. And those people continue to vote for the libs, democrats who work explicitly to keep them that way. Redlining ? Why should anyone take any financial risk on a population who have already demonstrated a refusal to meet their obligations and responsibilities , and, continue to do so today ? Reparations ? Fuck you. Trillions wasted on people who will not, have not, and do not do anything to help themselves. When you choose to become a part of the society that is responsible, productive, meets their obligations, when you stop your self serving whining, when you begin to carry your load, we can talk. A large portion of black America hasn't and will not, preferring a free ride. Reparations, yea, fuck you.
Crackemcee said: And, if you guys were really up on American history, you'd know Douglass' pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps nonsense was rejected by blacks once W.E.B. Du Bois came on the scene - and Du Bois was proved right - so why keep acting like blacks are doing it wrong?
Ahh, glad to see you are up on WEB DuBois. Or are you? Have you actually read him?
For example, his concept of raising the "talented tenth" of the black race and basically letting the other 90% go to Hell. (He said it more elegantly but at bottom that is what he was saying)
And it wasn't even his idea. He parroted it from a bunch of white folks. Some dispute about which white folks but no dispute that it was white folks.
So yeah, tell us about WEB DuBois, Crack. This ought to be good.
BTW: For anyone interested, the book "The Negro Problem" in which DuBois' essay appears is available free at the Kindle store.
Crack, if you have not read it, you should. If you have read it, you should read it again.
"Bullshit. [Blacks] have chosen to NOT get an education, chosen to NOT learn marketable job skills, chosen to NOT support their families, children, chosen to NOT exhibit responsible behavior."
Really? After slavery, whites want to discuss "responsible behavior"? Insane. Whatever - you're one of those crazies who believes this:
Crack wrote: So I can live broke somewhere else, too? Man - white people must have nothing better to do than dream up new tortures for negroes,...
I never met you. I don't live in your town. I have no control over how much you make or what you pay for rent. I certainly am not dreaming up tortures for negroes or you specifically. I'm just going to work every day, earning a dollar and trying to get though the week.
Michelle Dulak Thomson said... Awful as the antebellum South was, I'd wager that Brazil was much worse.
Something like 10 million blacks were sold (by other blacks) from Africa to South America and the Caribbean. Many, I think 8-9mm went to Brazil.
Slaves were cheap in Brazil due to proximity to Africa and were freely imported up through the mid to late 19th century. Life expectancy was 3-5 years. As someone said, they were simply worked to death. Being cheap, there was no incentive for owners to take care of them. They were a disposable good.
At the end of slavery, Brazil had fewer than 1mm slaves to emancipate.
In what became the US and the US, something like 1mm slaves were imported in the same 150 year period.
In 1865 the end of slavery, we emancipated 4mm slaves. (Statistical Abstract)
This even though importation of slaves had been illegal in the US for 40 years.
In the US, they were a capital good, limited in supply and very expensive. Owners had an incentive to keep them alive, healthy and breeding. Not all did, but the incentive was always there.
So yeah, conditions in Brazil were considerably worse.
"Firstly, the Douglas's quotation is hyperbole at its' finest - considering that 90% of the slaves sent to the Caribbean or South American died from overwork or disease compared to an increasing population of slaves in the USA from births (not importation)."
Oh, I guess that made America seem like The Ritz.
"The American slave importation was only around 5-6 % of the total number of slaves brought into the Americas."
Now the attempt to minimize - white people are so predictable. Let's add some perspective to those teeny-tiny numbers, shall we?
"The seconds point is the contention that the Civil War was fought over freeing the slaves. If it had been advertise as that, there would have been precious little support for going to war."
"It's telling that in the period before the Civil War that the abolitionists never tried the simple measure of just buying slaves and setting them free."
Because they knew you don't buy humans - something you don't seem to have gathered in the ensuing years.
"There had been no importation of slaves since the early 1800s - so the trade was strictly in people residing in the US. But the reality was that no one would contribute anything like the funds needed - so it became a "moral" issue."
I'm glad I've already got that quote with the "moral argument" bullshit out there - you believe nonsense.
"Spin it all you want Crack - you got sold out by your own people in Africa - both to the Americans and to the Arab lands (which is still going on today)."
Yep - the manipulative tribal people, without guns, merely "sold out" to the innocent Western slave traders who showed up armed.
You really believe this stuff, don't you?
Man, if I was that gullible, these streets would've eaten me alive years ago,...
"You've really got to be an asshole to feature anti-American speech snippets on the 4th of July. Like going to someone's birthday party and pissing on their carpet."
You just called Frederick Douglass an asshole.
Plus - in case you forgot - we're citizens of this country, with every right to criticize it, on the Fourth or otherwise.
And, since the "carpet" is covered in dried blood, pus, semen, and left over tools of torture, I don't think anyone but you will notice,...
Crack Emcee wrote: BTW - now we're down to technicalities, are we? A far cry from your arguments defending the KKK. You're losing your grip, jr.
"Whites had to grant them their freedom."
Whites will have to grant us reparations.

But agreed with who, jr? Themselves, for agreeing to something for the nation's redemptive good, or the thousands of blacks who have carried and protected it, like a flame in a strong wind of white resistance, for over 150 years?
its very simple. There are only two ways to get freedom. Either overthrow the govt or have the govt give you a seat at the table. I'm not saying that blacks had no role in the narrative for freedom. Of course they did. But they didn't have hands on the levers of power. Whites had to grant them their rights. And lucky for you, enough of them did.
As for reparations, I'd be more worried about Mexicans taking any reparations that might go your way (in the way of social programs). Who is hardest hit now? black people. Who would be competing with newly legalized Mexicans? Blacks. And you'll be fighting over scraps, since mcdonalds and companies like them will only produce so many low skilled jobs. The dems are selling you out for a cynical attempt for votes.
Crack wrote: Then - a mere 12 years later - America abandoned what all that fighting was for, reneged on it's reparations promises, and embarked on another 100 years of terrorism.
those were the democrats. The party of slavery. And now blacks are beholden to them. And yeah it sucked, but that was now a century and a half ago. A lot has happened since then. You do know we have a black president, right?
"Ahh, glad to see you are up on WEB DuBois. Or are you? Have you actually read him?"
Yes.
"For example, his concept of raising the "talented tenth" of the black race and basically letting the other 90% go to Hell. (He said it more elegantly but at bottom that is what he was saying)"
He did not (now who's read him?) He said the top 10% should advocate for the rest.
"And it wasn't even his idea."
Who cares?
"He parroted it from a bunch of white folks."
Because he had no brain of his own - God, you guys are racist.
"Some dispute about which white folks but no dispute that it was white folks."
Nigger lovers, I'm sure.
"So yeah, tell us about WEB DuBois, Crack. This ought to be good."
His view dominated the Civil Rights struggle, doing away with Booker T. Washington's "bootstrap" philosophy because - it was obvious - dealing with whites wasn't going to work when, every time blacks succeeded, whites would get jealous and burn your town down.
Great people, white folks - so kind and fair - definitely the people who should be explaining morality to others today.
"BTW: For anyone interested, the book "The Negro Problem" in which DuBois' essay appears is available free at the Kindle store."
Yep - I'm a problem. How's it feel to be a problem? Like I'm surrounded by idiots.
"Crack, if you have not read it, you should. If you have read it, you should read it again."
Since you're giving lessons on what you don't understand, why don't you try reading books on the American government's racist redlining practices that led to blacks having no wealth?
Crack wrote: And, if you guys were really up on American history, you'd know Douglass' pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps nonsense was rejected by blacks once W.E.B. Du Bois came on the scene - and Du Bois was proved right - so why keep acting like blacks are doing it wrong?
well no wonder! Du Bois was a socialist/communist. If blacks are rejecting Douglass's pull yourself up By your bootstraps "nonsense" and instead accepted Dubois doesn't that explain why they are in their predicament? because socialism doesn't work. And socialism is all about the reparations and the redistribution.
Rather than earning it, they are waiting for it to be given to them. How long have they been waiting?
Dubois visited Russia and came to the conclusion that the Soviet system was "the most hopeful vehicle for the world." He spent the next 12 years as a Communist propagandist, trying (and failing) to convert the NAACP into a Communist front. He then visited Nazi Germany and said Hitler "showed Germany a way out when most Germans saw nothing but impenetrable mist. They have domestic peace after a generation of wars; they have a nation at work, after a nightmare of unemployment.”
He then told China to welcome the Japanese invaders as liberators.
He agitated against aid to our allies in WWII (and was indicted by the Roosevelt govt under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Of course, like all good communists, he turned against the nazis when they broke the Hitler Stalin pact.
He then was appointed as American delegate to founding of UN under ALGER HISS!
He then dabbled I politics to varying degrees, but always with a socialist bent, and limited success before going to China under Chairman Mao where he denied the famine that killed 7 million. And defended Russia's suppression of the Hingarian Revolt of 1956.
He THEN joined the communist party! And finally retired to Ghana where he lived under a socialist police state.
And you think, Crack, that blacks should be following Du Bois over Frederick Douglas?
dubois wrote: Capitalism cannot reform itself. Communism -- the effort to give all ... what they need and to ask of each the best they can contribute -- this is the only way of human life."
and this is the fight we are having. Blacks are largely socialist, because they've grown up being taught by the likes of Dubois. Obama's old church, socialist. Etc. And yet all the blacks who succeed? capitalist. Actors, businessmen, sports stars. You, know- the uncle Tom's.
They may even have socialist leanings while they rise, but they play the game like capitalists. Their success would NEVER come from socialism.
Maybe, Crack, you're living in the wrong country. try a place like Ghana. It might be more up your alley.
But it was AMERICA that let it happen - that partisan divide is making you screwy in the head. You can scream "Democrats" until you're blue in the face and still won't recognize you're the only one who cares about that. AMERICA is the criminal here.
"And now blacks are beholden to them."
You guys LOVE talking like blacks don't have minds of our own. It's all white influence and us just nodding in agreement. How can you casually say something so insulting and think anyone black's going to vote with you?
You don't know shit about blacks - we're not beholden to anybody. We've been Republicans and Democrats and we'll continue to be whatever is necessary to get justice. Like the divide between feminists and white men, your partisan bullshit is a white folks problem.
"Yeah it sucked, but that was now a century and a half ago. A lot has happened since then."
That's when the white's terrorism and plunder of blacks began. Wow - how do we celebrate 100+ years of horror?
"well no wonder! Du Bois was a socialist/communist. If blacks are rejecting Douglass's pull yourself up By your bootstraps "nonsense" and instead accepted Dubois doesn't that explain why they are in their predicament?"
"crack, didn't Dubois win the Stalin Peace Price in the 50's? The man couldn't even recognize the evils of Stalin."
Oh my - a black leader is found not to be perfect.
That's sure to make him a fraud to whites with no ambition to be decent to begin with.
I mean, whites couldn't recognize the evils of slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, rapings, burning people alive, destroying whole towns, killing children, bombing churches, and flat-out economic crime against their fellow citizens.
I'll take Du Bois' mistakes over white America's any day,...
If you want to give Crack a forum why don't you just link to his god awful web page.
You should have titled this post "Agitprop from My Son". The WSJ has a good discussion of the entire speech which might have saved you having to publish much of the vitriol that you published here.
"Because I can't go "back" to a place I've never been,..."
Well, you've never been a slave and you've never experienced segregation as a an adult, but that doesn't stop you from complaining about it.
Fred Douglas of course, wasn't from Africa but his Grandfather was. He easily could've gone back - instead he stayed here and whined and complained about how awful AmeriKKKa was.
It was founded as the International Stalin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples, but was renamed the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples as a result of destalinization.
Unlike the Nobel Prize, the Lenin Peace Prize was usually awarded to several people a year rather than to just one individual. The prize was mainly awarded to prominent Communists and supporters of the Soviet Union who were not Soviet citizens.
Notable recipients include: W. E. B. Du Bois, Fidel Castro, Salvador Allende, Angela Davis, and Nelson Mandela.
"You've never been a slave and you've never experienced segregation as a an adult, but that doesn't stop you from complaining about it."
"As an adult" - nice qualifier there - you know I knew it, but I guess childhood doesn't count. Which is funny:
Whites don't want to pay for past discrimination during slavery - because it's too old - or that suffered under Jim Crow by those living.
That tells blacks everything we need to know about whites and ethics.
And you're now the second white on this thread who thinks blacks in pain should be quiet to make white's lives better.
Incredible. You'd have all made good Nazis.
"Fred Douglas of course, wasn't from Africa but his Grandfather was. He easily could've gone back - instead he stayed here and whined and complained about how awful AmeriKKKa was."
Because we live here. Whites, of course, just fill each day with how wonderful it all is - never complaining about anything.
"Notable recipients include: W. E. B. Du Bois, Fidel Castro, Salvador Allende, Angela Davis, and Nelson Mandela.
You're welcome, Crack."
Isn't it interesting how, if whites don't like something, it's just assumed it's bad? Look, I'll make this easy on you:
If W. E. B. Du Bois, Angela Davis - and, even though he's not American, I'll even throw in Nelson Mandela - if any of them has done anything as horrible as the crimes America has committed against blacks, then I'll side with America against blacks.
But, if not, then please shut-the-fuck-up because - compared to blacks - you don't have a moral leg to stand on,...
cracster - you've gotten your reparations and you've squandered them. You could have made Detroit a shining wonderful city to show what blacks can do, but now its a dead zone.
But remember, in addition to the trillions of welfare and subsidies and community block grants, three hundred thousand white soldiers died to give you the freedom that you have wasted.
I'm willing to start a "Crack - back to Africa" fund drive. Think of it Crack, an all expenses paid, one-way ticket back to your homeland. You can then be free of "racism" and "Whitey" oppressing you. You and your black brothers can live like Kings in your "New Jerusalem."
Why live here, in as Rev Wright so elegantly put it, "God Damn America" when you can live in Africa?
You guys realize Crack is asking for reperations because a few years ago his wife left him for his best friend?
Because he is so closed minded to any new ideas, he is willing to take the WEB DuBois route rather then Booker T route.
In other, he follows the crowd, blames everyone for his problems and never offers solutions (other then for everyone to give him their hard earned funds because of what happened 400 years ago, not that his wife walked out on him for his his best friend)
"cracster - you've gotten your reparations and you've squandered them"
Ahh, now we're re-writing history - grand. Whites didn't renege, blacks got reparations all along and we're just too dumb to know it.
"You could have made Detroit a shining wonderful city to show what blacks can do, but now its a dead zone."
And whites played no role in that what-so-ever. That's what you tell yourselves. It truly is an insane outlook for a nation's most numerous and powerful citizens to hold. Citizens who were openly, and violently, hostile to integration. That's what you tell yourselves.
Just insanity.
"But remember, in addition to the trillions of welfare and subsidies and community block grants, three hundred thousand white soldiers died to give you the freedom that you have wasted."
You made one meager effort to make good, it didn't work, so now - after 400 years of white hatred - you wipe your hands of it and claim it's our fault. What patriots.
NewAgers do that, too. They give you some quack remedy and, when it inevitably doesn't work because they never cared if you got better - they blame you, saying you didn't try hard enough, didn't believe enough, or didn't follow the instructions correctly - anything but admitting they fucked you over.
"I'm willing to start a "Crack - back to Africa" fund drive. Think of it Crack, an all expenses paid, one-way ticket back to your homeland."
Where do you guys get this "your homeland" stuff? What in the world makes you imagine Africa - an entire continent I didn't visit when I had the chance - as my homeland? Is it so odd for you to accept that black Americans are black AMERICANS?
Maybe that's been white's problem all along.
"You can then be free of "racism" and "Whitey" oppressing you."
Because he's such a fucking animal he can't bring himself to stop on his own - nice.
"You and your black brothers can live like Kings in your 'New Jerusalem.'"
And America will still escape paying for it's crimes - which is your goal, right? Why? What is it about the truth, and making things right in this country, that bothers you so much?
"Why live here, in as Rev Wright so elegantly put it, "God Damn America" when you can live in Africa?"
Because, just like I don't like all my relatives, I haven't disowned a single one - I know white people do that but it's not right, or natural, or any way to build a family or country. Whites will divorce anything. You're not right in the head. Or the heart. Your patriotism is a sham, that's why you're willing to ship people away before you'd change your evil ways - you don't care about the country. It's all about you and your insecurities.
And with good reason.
Now, go see if you so-called "Republicans" can still exploit Latinos to replace the black vote while declaring you don't see race. I was told blacks were going to have problem there.
Forget redistributive change (e.g. reparations). Civil rights "leaders" would prefer a Mandela solution. Only a progressive solution which slaughters several million black and white Americans will ever satiate their thirst. I wonder if their genocide of several million Americans annually will count towards their blood tally.
"You guys realize Crack is asking for reperations because a few years ago his wife left him for his best friend?"
Hee-heee! This is fresh.
"Because he is so closed minded to any new ideas, he is willing to take the WEB DuBois route rather then Booker T route."
"WIlling to take"? We're talking about discussions that took place at the start of the Twentieth Century. (How is accepting either "new ideas"?) Blacks made these decisions with their feet, long ago, and Booker T. Washington lost. And with good reason:
His approach was getting us nowhere because he never contended with the fact that whites have never believed what they preached and - without laws in place to stop them - were going to be mean either way.
The Civil Rights Movement was born under WEB DuBois.
"[Crack] follows the crowd, blames everyone for his problems and never offers solutions (other then for everyone to give him their hard earned funds because of what happened 400 years ago, not that his wife walked out on him for his his best friend)"
If anyone knows what this guy's talking about - please - add to the story and make it even more comical.
"In other words, a perfect modern Democrat."
Who just happens to be a registered Republican, and has been for a long, long time. I, and a lot of other people, just think racists and racism are fucking up the GOP - the party that freed the slaves and was once called "Lincoln and his Black Republicans". The party that once fought for black reparations and suffered with us when the country reneged. The party before the Southern Strategy and Tea Partiers who can't seem to stop saying the wrong thing while repeatedly trying to undercut black's gains. The party that no longer has "principles" that even they respect - or is someone going to try and convince me Mitt Romney is an "extremely conservative" pol again?
I personally accept blame for the mania and self-hatred on display in this thread. Clearly it is my "fault" that somebody I have never met has a sad. Probably there was an ancestor of mine who was marched to Oklahoma who looked sideways at an ancestor of our resident communist-supporting "Republican" and those butterfly wings flapping caused the hurricane of (a wife leaving for a best friend?) whatever the issue is today.
As a "white" person (just like Dinesh D'Souza) I must allow that every example offered against me because of things others who may/may not look like me is true and proves my collective guilt. Further, I must allow that every example I might offer in response is part of some false consciousness and not indicative of anything.
Collective blame for behavior is obviously a Republican principle. That's what the kulaks learned in the last century when the Republicans punished the kulaks' past transgressions. I am glad the NY Times and also W.E.B. DuBois were never there to tell anybody there was no systematic starvation when those Republicans were not acting badly.
Crack Emcee wrote: "Oh my - a black leader is found not to be perfect.
I'll take Du Bois' mistakes over white America's any day,..."
you think the regimes that Dubois supported were Utopias? How naive. But it explains a lot. The whole race argument is actually an economic one, and its the same old, battle we've always been fighting. And it's why you're so strident and unreasonable. The left is always that way as they agitprop their way to social justice. By which I mean turning everything they touch into a banana republic with other people's money.
[JRH]"BTW: For anyone interested, the book "The Negro Problem" in which DuBois' essay appears is available free at the Kindle store."
[Crack}Yep - I'm a problem. How's it feel to be a problem? Like I'm surrounded by idiots.
It is statements like this that lead me to wonder whether you have read DuBois, or at least his essay on the Talented Tenth.
Sounds like this is the first time you've heard of the book.
You claim to be broke and do not seem happy about it. A natural enough reaction. Not unhappy enough to do anything about it, though.
The reason you are broke is that you apparently have no skills that other people are willing to pay money for. This has nothing to do with your skin color. This is all about you.
Someone suggested you learn to be a welder. There is plenty of good money in that. Or you could learn to program PLCs. Do a 2 year program at a school like Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and you will earn $75,000 per year on graduation.
I have people asking me all the time where they can find PLC programmers. They couldn't care less what color you are as long as you can design and write code. Learn to code and I'll send you some names.
Or you could learn to do something else if that doesn't appeal to you.
Yes, the way blacks have been treated by whites is a huge problem. But your being broke has nothing to do with that. It has only to do with you.
Crack wrote: Both of their ideas have been dead for decades, you moron.
Nope. Both men are dead but ideology lives on. if you go to school and take an African studies course you are steeped in this god awful ideology that permeates lefty groupthink to this day. Occupy Wall Street is just rehashed socialism over and over. And I don't even know that Fred Douglas's entire ideology WAS pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. We were just discussing a single speech. But that idea versus the socialistic one is in fact the very fight that the left and right continues to have.
Blacks need to get off the socialism band wagon for their own good. it didn't so DuBois much good. He had to retire to Ghana of all places.
If W. E.
Nope. They were socialists/communists. You are indicting a country for the sins of individuals. So then the comparison would be the US versus communist Russia, since you are comparing country to country. Do you REALLY want to compare the US to Soviet Russia in terms of moral evil?
And whites played no role in that what-so-ever. That's what you tell yourselves. It truly is an insane outlook for a nation's most numerous and powerful citizens to hold. Citizens who were openly, and violently, hostile to integration. That's what you tell yourselves.
I won't blame Detroit on blacks alone. Rather, I'll blame it on democratic governance. And there are plenty of whites in the Democratic Party and amongst the left. Feminism is largely an upper middle class white movement. But you're now suggesting that left wing and right wing blacks are interchangeable. Not so. So, insofar as whites were democrat and played a role in detroits polices then yeah, blame those whites. But that's because of their STUPID policies, not because of their skin color.
Look to blue state policies to explain why Detroit is a wasteland.if blacks want more detroits then keep voting for democrats. You know who's always hardest hit by democratic policies? minorities, of course.

And the problem that conservatives had with Romney was not that they wished he was more like Dubois. It was that he was too much of a democrat.
Look at blue states crack. Its the dems that always took about the disparity between the rich and the poor. But where do you see that most prominently? in blue states, of course. NYC is so expensive that only rich people can live here. And yet the dems demagogue big business as if they don't have the money. I guess the Talented Ten is also a socialist construct, considering the democrats who advocate wealth redistribution are always stinking rich. Its a sop to the poor to get their votes. But it never involves THEIR money.
Sandra Fluke gets sent out as a downtrodden woman who can't afford to pay for her birth control. Boo hoo! War on women. meanwhile she attends an Ivy League college that most Americans couldn't afford in their lifetime. AND dates a 1%er who is so rich he doesn't have to ever work in his life. And is a socialist, naturally. She can afford her birth control. In fact, considering her riches, maybe she should pay for mine too.
The intelligentsia always have cushy jobs and are set for life. Meanwhile, in Russia under communism the workers had to wait in line for toilet paper. That's what socialism is. In this country its rich (and not just rich but Daddy Warbucks rich) sanctimonious white folks, though many minorities have also made inroads, who've used capitalism to make their riches. And then turn around and pretend they are down with the poor by pushing socialism. The recipient of the liberals largesse is always the poor and they become poorer from it. Its the talented ten dictating social policy. Meanwhile, if you pull yourself up by your bootstraps you are responsible for your own salvation.
Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World...
What a load. People were - and still are - dying to get in, apparently so they could experience the revolting barbarity, etc., so lacking in their countries of origin.
Immigration 1850 to 1930 "Between 1850 and 1930, about 5 million Germans immigrated to the United States with a peak in the years between 1881 and 1885, when a million Germans left Germany and settled mostly in the Midwest. Between 1820 and 1930, 3.5 million British and 4.5 million Irish entered America. Before 1845 most Irish immigrants were Protestants. After 1845, Irish Catholics began arriving in large numbers, largely driven by the Great Famine."

Barbarity is part of the body hair theme.
Go see Dinesh D'Souza's America to see a great re-enactment of this speech.
Two posts, two idiotic quotes. A theme!
I wonder what Frederick Douglass would say about present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans . . . ad nauseam
To say we've made considerable progress would be an understatement.
Pretty spot on for 1852.
As for 2014?
I assumed the words were Jeremiah Wright's.
Do you know why your son posted this excerpt, AA?
1852. 600,000 whites died 10 years later, half of them to free the slaves.
And, to think, that was before this country really got going.
sane_voter,
"I wonder what Frederick Douglass would say about present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans . . . ad nauseam"
Because what present day blacks say doesn't count? If he said whites destroyed all his good work - and goodwill - what would you say in return?
Whites are so determined to blame blacks for SOMETHING - while skirting blame for white's almost 3 centuries of awfulness - they'll say anything.
Even to Frederick Douglass.
He'd see through you, too,...
Larry Day,
"To say we've made considerable progress would be an understatement."
Yeah and you'll pat yourself on the back 'til your arm's broke. We can't even hear ourselves say it, you're so busy giving yourself credit. Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile, but what great folks you are, right?
Self-deluded fools,...
Now I know why she coddles Crack...apparently the Althouse clan believes we are still living in the mid 19th century, and that the last 150 never happened.
sane_voter,
"I wonder what Frederick Douglass would say about present day Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, East St. Louis, New Orleans . . . ad nauseam"
Once he discovered most whites didn't stop discriminating until I was approaching my teen years, I think, he'd be just as disgusted, as any other black American.
Whites think they'd get a medal or something.
That's how fucked-up they are,...
Michael K,
"1852. 600,000 whites died 10 years later, half of them to free the slaves."
Then - a mere 12 years later - America abandoned what all that fighting was for, reneged on it's reparations promises, and embarked on another 100 years of terrorism.
Is that the glorious history to which you refer?
If Americans want to see a good perspective of this country, just travel somewhere in the 3rd world and you will see the true nature of humanity.
Only then will the sniveling Baby Boomer angst of life not being fair take perspective.
The culture that created our great country is rarely appreciated by many living fat off of it.
Birkel,

Big Mike,
"Is there a reason why your son chooses to ignore 162 years of history, Althouse?"
Because Jim Crow lasted for the rest of that time - pretty much up until I was a teen - and the conditions of black America's lives aren't that different.
White resistance is still a MAJOR factor in black lives.
That's why.
Now - why don't you know that?
That's the important question,...
chickelit,
"Pretty spot on for 1852.
As for 2014?"
He was a "race hustler" then, so nothing's changed:
Whites are still racist and in need of someone telling them to stop,...
MathMom,
"Go see Dinesh D'Souza's America to see a great re-enactment of this speech."
If you can tell me - honestly - that, after making that speech, Douglass throws D'Souza in prison, I am there,...
Repatriation plane ticket still available.
Love, Oso
Gahrie,
"Now I know why she coddles Crack...apparently the Althouse clan believes we are still living in the mid 19th century, and that the last 150 never happened."
3) She thinks you're insane,….

This has been self-evident for some time now, but I'm glad you finally noticed. I speculated once that there must be some deep dark event or secret in that family's past which drives this quasi-religious flagellation.
Larry Nelson,
"If Americans want to see a good perspective of this country, just travel somewhere in the 3rd world and you will see the true nature of humanity."
No - there'll be no "appreciation" coming,...

Now grow up, asshole.
For the Crack Emcee it will always be 1852.
But in most lefty critiques.

those whites back in the day were awful! but even then there were those that fought against the idea of slavery.
Ditto, Big Mike, @ 10:05 AM
Well Crack I'm not going to blame blacks for our current situation.
But as for revolting hypocrisy and its effects on our current state of affairs, I'll sure as heck blame Good King Barack.

Oso Negro,
"Crack, the only thing I blame you for is being such a relentless bitch-ass whiner."
Douglass goes on later in that speech:
Crack wrote:
Take all the credit you want for blacks winning their freedom.
Technically blacks couldn't win their freedom since whites were in govt. Whites had to grant them their freedom. So, give props to the whites who agreed that the situation was wrong and needed to be addressed.
When you gonna start the liberation movement for Meade, Althouse? He's an oppressed pansy. The bad men are mean to him.
You started down that road some time ago, but you seem to have let it go.
There's more oppression for you to fix! And more stuff to acquire. The Theology of Dylan demands that you keep the 60s going.
See you in another few months or year or so.
Larry Day,
"Crack, you're blinded by your own bitterness."
"" Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile,..."
Ultimately what happens in life is based on the work put in.
Open up the door, I'll get it myself"
I was never sure if he was saying he would open the door and get it himself or society should just open the door and then he would get it himself.
"Oh, the poor blacks they need the help of the beneficent whites because they are incapable of doing for themselves."
Bull crap. Get off your butt, stop whining, and do for yourself. Youre capable.
And that means you Crack.
And if you don't, no one else is going to do it for you.
NotquiteunBuckley,
"The Playboy philosophy, explicitly regnant in the sixties, may have appealed to the younger generation as the key to hedonism, but hedonism is not the key to happiness, and the wretchedness that blights so many families--white certainly, but predominantly black--has much to do with the nakedness of the public square, in which for generations there were men and women who spoke the language of duty and morality, of loyalty and obligation. And licentious engagements in hedonism are more readily outgrown in the more disciplined classes than in those less self-reliant." - WFB P. 183 Happy Days Were Here Again"

No action is taken and all discussion is over - on to The World Cup.
THAT's how committed this country is to justice and the welfare of it's people,….
Let him alone! . . . [Y]our interference is doing him positive injury.”
— Frederick Douglass, What the Black Man Wants: An Address Delivered in Boston, Massachusetts, on 26 January 1865, reprinted in 4 The Frederick Douglass Papers 59, 68 (J.
Big Mike,
"Who put them [at the bottom] and who keeps them there if not Blacks themselves and their allies in the Democrat party?"
SGT Ted,
I love it - no thanks to blacks for winning their own freedom and making the Constitution mean something.
You mean like the ones that fought for the Confederate Army against the Union?
Harriet Tubman never fought against the Union,...
Lefties never quote that one.
Edward Lunny,
" Sure, blacks are still at the bottom of every pile,..." Perhaps those that are should stop choosing to be there.

TRIGGER WARNING: CRACKPOST
So Crack,
you talk about how many blacks have been killed in the US since the War Between the States.
I keep asking how many by other blacks, how many by whites?
You keep not answering.
If you don't like the question, tough. I'll keep asking. Your non-answer may say more than any answer you could give.
John Henry
Gahrie,
You are an asshole who constantly hijacks threads and contributes little.
Ann's breaking that one,...
sdharms,
"In the 50's thru 60's, blacks still had blah, blah, blah, I-didn't-read-The Case For Reparations-either, blah, blah, blah,…"
chickelit,
Of course, you're talking about you own mind. But do tell! I'm interested. Specify your speculation. What "dark" things do you picture in the Althouse woodpile.
That's just it. We don't know.
I betcha you could make a pretty disgusting gumbo with all the dreck that gets cooked up in that head of yours.
But you're sane - totally sane,...
TRIGGER WARNING: CRACKPOST
Crack says:
John Henry
So, has anyone seen the ad for Survivor's Remorse, the new show on Starz? One of the main characters is accepting an award and says something like, "I want to thank my mama for not aborting me."
The show is about 2 kids who grew up on the rough streets of Philly and made it.
Frederick Douglass also stated the following:
But your votes, your actions, and the constant cultivation of your cherished prejudices prove to the Negroes of the entire country that the Democrats are in opposition to them: and if the Democrats could have sway [have their way], our race would have no foothold here...The Democratic Party many woo us, they may court us and try to get us to worship at their shrine, but I will tell the gentleman that we are Republicans by instinct, and we will be Republicans as long as God will allow our proper sense to hold sway over us.'
---------------------------
If both men were alive today, they would say the Negro's tongue is cleaving to the roof of his mouth and he has lost all proper sense.
Shame on you Crack.
jr565, you're always a scream:
Crack:
If you can tell me - honestly - that, after making that speech, Douglass throws D'Souza in prison, I am there,...
D'Souza is a naturalized American citizen, from India. Dude, not even you can blame the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent for whatever is your beef today.
Birkel,
"I reject the notion of a "woodpile" because it implies some guilt which could be passed from one generation to the next."
You ran the table, Birk!
I betcha you could make a pretty disgusting gumbo with all the dreck that gets cooked up in that head of yours.

You're tired, guy.
lol not that you are real, or anything.
John,
"Isn't D'Souza black?"
No, just as the Jews, Irish, and Italians, didn't used to be white.
Don't look at me - whites invented this shit, man, I'm just explaining the rules,...
Annie,
"If both men were alive today, they would say the Negro's tongue is cleaving to the roof of his mouth and he has lost all proper sense.
Annie,
More outdated, pre-Reconstruction Douglass quotes.
No, it emphasizes whites will hire anyone but blacks,...
traditional guy,
"Crack and all Americans need to be standing up to the Marxist Destroyers of all 4 listed above, including the one we now call President."
Not until whites decide to do the right thing by blacks.
No justice? Then I don't give a damn what happens to your white paradise.
Or do I sound happy to you now?
MathMom,
"D'Souza is a naturalized American citizen, from India.
Crack,
I believe that the legacy of slavery will curse this country far past my lifetime.
Just out of curiosity, give me a short list of white people I should try to emulate, and a short reason why.
Regards,
Larry
You still won't see Black or Hispanic Amerikans in the national parks and forests that represent a trillion-dollar patrimony of ALL citizens.
We could consider selling them and paying reparations to all those whom we've deliberately enslaved and disenfranchised from 1776 until now.
This seems to have turned into a Frederick Douglass quote fest. This is one of my favorites:
"A man’s rights rest in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box.” - Frederick Douglass
James Lanpher,
"Booker T. Washington"
Are whites only in love with the thinkers blacks proved wrong?
jimbino,
"You still won't see Black or Hispanic Amerikans in the national parks and forests that represent a trillion-dollar patrimony of ALL citizens.
We could consider selling them and paying reparations to all those whom we've deliberately enslaved and disenfranchised from 1776 until now."
Not necessary, but I like your spirit,...
Larry Nelson,
"Just out of curiosity, give me a short list of white people I should try to emulate, and a short reason why."
I'm very fond of Harry Markopolos.
Indeed, once upon a time, we were worse than today. Such is true for every nation that was not founded today.
The Catholic Church is a pretty good rival.

John Henry
Edward Lunny,
“'Blacks who can’t get ahead are mostly responsible for own condition.'”
But here's a fact of American life you have to explain - without including white's long history of racism:
“A Black College Student Has The Same Chances Of Getting A Job As A White High School Dropout.”
I'll wait, Einstein - I'm anxious to see what you come up with this time.
Trying to avoid 400 years of slave history - in a country that's younger that - can't be easy, if you're in denial,...
rcocean,
"What about you Crack, why don't you go back to Africa?"
Because I can't go "back" to a place I've never been,...

I never met you. I don't live in your town. I have no control over how much you make or what you pay for rent.
I certainly am not dreaming up tortures for negroes or you specifically. I'm just going to work every day, earning a dollar and trying to get though the week.

John Henry
Ironclad,
"Firstly, the Douglas's quotation is hyperbole at its' finest - considering that 90% of the slaves sent to the Caribbean or South American died from overwork or disease compared to an increasing population of slaves in the USA from births (not importation)."
Oh, I guess that made America seem like The Ritz.
"The American slave importation was only around 5-6 % of the total number of slaves brought into the Americas."
Now the attempt to minimize - white people are so predictable. Let's add some perspective to those teeny-tiny numbers, shall we?
“...by 1860, there were more millionaires (slaveholders all) living in the lower Mississippi Valley than anywhere else in the United States. In the same year, the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire U.S. economy, worth more than all manufacturing and railroads combined.”
Doesn't sound the same, does it?
"The seconds point is the contention that the Civil War was fought over freeing the slaves. If it had been advertise as that, there would have been precious little support for going to war."
“That enslavement in America was somehow more than a moral problem became apparent while reading the grandfather of all Civil War histories, James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Battle Cry is ostensibly a history of The Late Unpleasantness, but it is also an expression of the centrality of enslavement in American history.
The first 200 pages or so show that the War was about not only the perpetuation of "African slavery," but its expansion. McPherson quotes directly from the mouths of secessionists who have no problem laying out bondage as their primary casus belli. McPherson shows the essential place enslavement held in the economy of the South and in America at large.”
But you still deny it - THAT's delusion.
Man, if I was that gullible, these streets would've eaten me alive years ago,...
averagejoe,
"You've really got to be an asshole to feature anti-American speech snippets on the 4th of July.

Whites will have to grant us reparations.
"So, give props to the whites who agreed that the situation was wrong and needed to be addressed."
But agreed with who, jr? Themselves, for agreeing to something for the nation's redemptive good, or the thousands of blacks who have carried and protected it, like a flame in a strong wind of white resistance, for over 150 years?
its very simple.

By your bootstraps "nonsense" and instead accepted Dubois doesn't that explain why they are in their predicament? because socialism doesn't work. And socialism is all about the reparations and the redistribution.
Rather than earning it, they are waiting for it to be given to them. How long have they been waiting?
crack, didn't Dubois win the Stalin Peace Price in the 50's?
The man couldn't even recognize the evils of Stalin.
And you think, Crack, that blacks should be following Du Bois over Frederick Douglas?
dubois wrote:

and this is the fight we are having.
It might be more up your alley.
jr565,
"those were the democrats. The party of slavery."

Like I said, it worked better than Booker T. Washington's plan, and defeated Jim Crow waaay ahead of schedule.
Somehow, you're missing the implications of that.
"Rather than earning it, they are waiting for it to be given to them."
God, you're dense - no, they waiting for it to be "returned" to the rightful owners.

The point is to never betray our relatives or their struggle.

Ann;
I got no use for whiners.
From Wikipedia:
It was founded as the International Stalin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples, but was renamed the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples as a result
of destalinization.
You're welcome, Crack.
John Henry
jr565,
"And you think, Crack, that blacks should be following Du Bois over Frederick Douglas?"
Both of their ideas have been dead for decades, you moron.

Blacks left this whole discussion - which whites are just getting to -over 100 years ago,...
rcocean,
"You've never been a slave and you've never experienced segregation as a an adult, but that doesn't stop you from complaining about it."

White plunder and white supremacy stole our wealth, Mike
@Crack, you have to earn it before the Democrats can steal it. Whining until someone throws money in your general direction is not earning it.
You're just an infantile whiner and that's all you'll ever be.
Crack,
I'm willing to start a "Crack - back to Africa" fund drive.
In other words, a perfect modern Democrat.
Unknown,
"cracster - you've gotten your reparations and you've squandered them"
Ahh, now we're re-writing history - grand.
Get the story right, U,....
Angela Davis never had the opportunity.

I don't think so,...
ROTFLMAO!!!!
Forget redistributive change (e.g. reparations). Civil rights "leaders" would prefer a Mandela solution. Only a progressive solution which slaughters several million black and white Americans will ever satiate their thirst. I wonder if their genocide of several million Americans annually will count towards their blood tally.
JSF,
"You guys realize Crack is asking for reperations because a few years ago his wife left him for his best friend?"
Yeah, JSF, you've got my whole story down pat.
Everybody listen to him:
This guy's keeping you well informed,...
Whites will divorce anything.
Blacks never get divorced because they never get married in the first fucking place...they just roam around being "Baby's Daddies"
Crack seems to think that only blacks were slaves.
Around the same time of the War Between the States, the Russians were freeing their slaves as well.
23 million of them. All white.

Both of their ideas have been dead for decades, you moron.
If W. E.

Why the hell are you a republican when you are spouting Dubois?! The two stances are contradictory. Modern Republicans are republican because they don't buy into socialism.
Immigration 1850 to 1930
"Between 1850 and 1930, about 5 million Germans immigrated to the United States with a peak in the years between 1881 and 1885, when a million Germans left Germany and settled mostly in the Midwest. Between 1820 and 1930, 3.5 million British and 4.5 million Irish entered America. Before 1845 most Irish immigrants were Protestants. After 1845, Irish Catholics began arriving in large numbers, largely driven by the Great Famine."
