This is what a good looking man who's neither fat nor athletic looks like when the clothes come off. If we're going to bust the myth of photoshopped women, then maybe we need this as well.

Who is James Franco and what makes this particular selfie notably different from any of 100,000,000 semi-nude selfies?
I'd say it was a brave and provocative pose for a guy with no dick.
That he took down the photo quickly suggests he either inadvertently posted it or sobered up a little.
The quick take-down could also be part of the satire.
I thought they were hilarious. Taking it down could be part of the satire as MM wrote, or it could be discouragement that no one got the joke.
File it under "It seemed like a good idea at the time. "
I picked the last one because it was closest to my thoughts on it.
Franco strikes me as a guy who likes to do silly things. He doesn't take himself seriously and he considers himself funny and a goof.
This fits right in with that, and taking this as anything serious is missing the punch line.
You forgot choice #5: Who's James Franco?
Geez I have gotten old...Brooke Freakin' Shields is doing commercials for reading glasses!
The first two answers do not exclude each other. It's a kind of humble brag. On my worst day, I look like this.
You need another choice
