Wisconsin GOP convention will vote on "Wisconsin's right, under extreme circumstances, to secede."

"A version of the so-called 'state sovereignty' resolution was first OK'd last month by one of the state GOP's eight regional caucuses as an assertion of the state's 10th Amendment rights," Daniel Bice reports in the Milwaukee State Journal.
Top Republican officials hoped to kill the fringe proposal during a meeting of the resolutions panel at the Hyatt Hotel in Milwaukee on April 5. Instead, the committee made a few edits to the resolution and adopted it on a split vote....
Governor Scott Walker said: "I don't think that one aligns with where most Republican officials are in the state of Wisconsin — certainly not with me."

The Republican Party needs to do a better job of reining in the idiots. This does not make them look rational to me, a voter. It's like they swallowed up the Posse Comitatus, or something because they want their votes in swing elections.

The question of secession was settled in the negative at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Since they're obviously not going to secede (sure, Obama is no Lincoln, but still...), the only practical effect will be to make the Wisconsin GOP look stupid. What's the motivation?

cubanbob said...

I would say its a bit premature at this time.
Naturally the lefties think this is crazy but they are down with the current Administration's selective enforcement, non-enforcement, ignoring black letter law and just creating law by memo.

Will it officially be called "The People's Republic of Wisconsin"?

This didn't work for the Federalists either.

The crazy is only getting started. They went through a lot of trouble to oust the last two remaining sane Republicans in the legislature. That wasn't for nothing.

No state should be forced to remain in the United States if it wishes to leave. It is about time states' rights under the 10th Amendment were reasserted.

NitneLiun said...

States reasserting their 10th Amendment rights is long overdue. The War of Northern Aggression settled nothing.

Compromise: Wisconsin stays, WisGOP can leave.

@garage,

were people talking about secession after the second election of George W Bush?

Did it ever reach the level of discussion inside State Party political platforms?

Not to defend this idea here, but merely to mention that the desire to secede changes with the fortunes of President and Party.

Kind of like that whole "dissent is patriotic" meme.

LOL one of eigth regional caucauses has brought this to a vote, which will be soundly defeated by the whole, but that doesn't stop you from trying to make some pathetic case..

Hey corky, the "party of mental patients" has thoroughly kicked ass the last three election cycles. This fall won't be any different.

Perhaps these people are not crazy, just ahead of their time. If the USA dissolves, it will not be the first country to break apart.

The WisGOP is now dominated by America-hating, John Birch TeaBag traitors. No shortage of batshit crazy voters to elect them either. I mean, look at Glenn Grothman.

Nobody believes that 1,000 years form now, the United States of America will be a recognizably similar culture with its current internal and national boundaries. So all we're really arguing about is time to a breakup, and whether it will be an internal or external one.

I doubt very much that Victorians thought their grandchildren may witness the dissolution of the UK. Or that Spain, after 500 years would face serious secession movements. Or that Venice would seek independence.

More recently, how many people saw the breakup of the USSR in 1970? Was there a 'legal mechanism' for it to be so? I think not.

These things have a funny way of never being able to happen, until one morning you wake up and it already has.

That being said, my money is not on whites in Wisconsin being on the cutting edge of it.

There are many good reasons for such a vote. Um, uh, I'm trying to think of one...nope, can't do it.

At least they are focusing on the important issues, ones that Wisconsinites face every day.

Smart politics, actually. These are the people that didn't show up to vote for Romney. Give them a chance to air their outrage,it's not going change anyone's vote. But maybe it will bring these people to the polls.

While just about every secession movement in this country has been launched by delusional nuts, the fact is that our system should have a way to address what should happen for a geographic part of our country to leave the Union (just as we have a system for how to add territories and states). Because whatever we may think about the reasons for any particular secession movement, I think everyone can imagine circumstances that would justify a state or part of a state deciding to leave.

Your reading comprehension is poor, as the very next paragraph states that Top Republican officials hoped to kill the fringe proposal during a meeting of the resolutions panel at the Hyatt Hotel in Milwaukee on April 5.

That was the statewide meeting, where it passed 11-4 with little discussion, according to Eric Shimpach, WI GOP delegate on state resolutions committee.

He even called it `overwhelming support'. From the state committee, not just the regional group it came from.

The War of Northern Aggression settled nothing.

Millions of blacks might disagree.

The Godfather said...

@ken in sc is right: New England seriously considered seceding during the War of 1812. Later, many abolitionists argued that the northern states should secede in order to avoid contamination by southern slavery, such as through the Fugitive Slave Act. If Dred Scott had remained the law of the land, northern secession would have been the logical response to the threat that the country would become all slave.

That said, (a) I don't think the 10th Amendment authorizes secession (Lincoln clearly didn't think so) and (b) we aren't at the point where such extreme measures need to be considered, so why muddy the waters in an election year in which there is a real prospect of making both houses of Congress bulwarks against further Obamafication of the country?

There is a faction of our society that is, for lack of a better term, crazy.

On the left, these are your anti war protestors and your occupy wall street thugs.

On the right, it's these guys.

It seems that, just as the Democrats gained power by catering to their extreme fringe, the Republicans are trying to do the same thing.

It worked for Democrats, I don't know why it won't work for Republicans.

Millions of blacks are still enslaved by their Democrat plantation lords.

And its not secession, its reserving the OPTION to do so legally, at a later point in time.

But of course this makes Libtard parasites nervouse.

I read fine. Wanna bet it's taken out Mr. Awesome Reading Comprehension??

It has no support from any GOP Senator or Assembly person.

Walkers against it.

The GOP chairman from the district it originated is against it.

The other seven committees did not draft anything remotely similar.

It will fail, it certainly does not represent the WI GOP as a whole.

It does. What happens is, the rest of the country invades with overwhelming military force and the seceding state(s) are forcibly re-attached.

Lewis Wetzel said...

When was secession determined to be unconstitutional or illegal?
Every intelligent American knows that the Civil War was fought 1861-1865. No one seems to be able to point out the part of the constitution where it says states cannot secede.
Lincoln believed that secession was implicitly forbidden by the constitution. If allowed to secede, states would enter and leave the Union as their interests demanded, and so the Union would not be stable, and the constitution would be meaningless.

garage mahal said...

The constitution replaced but did not invalid as such The Articles Of Confederation And Perpetual Union.

Why would you automatically assume that? If the circumstances were considered sufficiently extreme for a state to suceed why would succession be limited to one state? And if enough states were suceed why would you assume that an Army composed of volunteers from those states along with those states National Guards would go along with putting down a succession? Afterall Lincoln had to wait until the CSA bombarded Ft. Sumter before he had enough support to fight the South.

No Terry, the States would most certainly not be able to come and go as they pleased. Once a stated secedes, there is no guarantee that that state would ever be re-admitted by Congress, even if they wanted to be.

Ask President Romney and Tommy Thompson. Assembly elections in 2012 saw 161,000 more Democratic votes than Republicans, yet they won only 39% of the seats. Because they need to cheat thru gerrymandering, cutting early voting hours and eliminating early voting on weekends.

Of course cheating nothing new to your hero, is it?
