"Conservatives are always going on about how Americans are losing their values and their morality, well maybe it’s because you worship a guy who drowns babies."
Sayeth Bill Maher, and it's interesting logic, on many levels. 1. It's a joke; he's a comedian. 2. It's viral; I'm linking; Drudge is linking; everyone's talking. 3. It attests to his atheism, because if there really were a God like that, you wouldn't dare incur His wrath by telling the truth. Thus, it is, paradoxically, a statement that can only be made by one who doesn't believe the statement. 4. For those who do believe in God, they must resist absorbing this observation, because to see the point is to risk horrific retaliation. When you cannot escape the clutches of a "psychotic mass murderer" — to use another of Maher's epithets for God — you must appease and appease (and you may find peace in Stockholm Syndrome). 5. Tweaking the conservatives; it's always fun for liberals to think they are making steam blow out of conservative ears. 6. Dead babies... abortion... get on it, conservatives... surely, you can connect this up and hit back... this stuff always connects... babeeees... that insufferable prick said babeeees....

Not really. All I see is yet another "atheist" attacking christians.
That's what is interesting to me. For example, I don't believe in astrology, I think its silly - but I don't waste my time mocking it or the people who believe in it.
"Atheists" however, seem to spend am inordinate amount of time and energy fighting against christians. You'd think they were competing religions or something. Whats up with that anyway?
["atheists" in scare quotes b/c I don't really believe most are non-religious. They merely worship the State or Climate Change or Obama or themselves instead.]
Reminds me of the discussion between Smerdyakov and Grigory in The Brothers Karamazov. Your comments, not Maher's. Maher would have a hard time rising to that level.
When you cannot escape the clutches of a "psychotic mass murderer"
I think atheists have trouble grasping the concept of God. For instance, atheists always assume that death is bad. But of course from God's perspective that is hardly the case.
To apply secular rules, or thinking, to God seems to really miss the point.
I have never countenanced evangelists of any sort. I'm even rude to those nice young men on bicycles who invite me to read the book of Mormon. But there is nothing-- nothing-- worse than an evangelical atheist.
I think the people who watch Maher are just haters. I have some in my own family -- liberals that love to hate.
But there is nothing-- nothing-- worse than an evangelical atheist.
Heh.
And Maher spells his name wrong. And backwards.
Ignorant liberals saying ignorant hateful liberal things. Zzzzzzzzzzz.
What's interesting about Maher's atheism - and it applies to others like the late Hitchens, Richard Dawkins et al. - is that he/it never gets upset when religious figures promote social justice or economic fairness or other liberal/left causes.
He's really a "cafeteria atheist" who only gets angry at the offerings when they disagree with his leftwing appetite.
We can see this in the Pope's critical comments about capitalism. Were atheists upset about those views? No, not to my knowledge. But if the Pope denounces abortion suddenly the church-state wall is resurrected.
Well, hey, it's a good thing Maher said these things. I've never heard anything like them before, and this is the first time I've ever had occasion to think on criticisms of the faith.
Oh, wait. . . .
There seems to be some scriptural debate as to whether God warned just Noah, and if Noah warned others.
If Noah knew the flood was coming and didn't warn others, how is that worse than Obama saying, "If you like your health insurance plan, and your doctor, you can keep them. Period." when he knew otherwise?
By comparison, it's not like Noah could hide that he was building a massive arc, one that actually that worked.
The Obama administration built an arc that it knew or should of know wouldn't work, and asked people to rely on that.
This reminds me of the time I saw Tim Robbins on Maher's show wearing a t-shirt saying "What Would Jesus Bomb?". This was during the Iraq war and I'm sure Robbins thought it very clever and infuriating to Christians. My retort to the tv was, "How about the ENTIRE world, idiot?", thinking of the flood and Noah. These outburst don't cause orthodox Christians any unease, pain, or embarrassment. Rather, they confirm the cluelessness of these sophisticates about the subject they are trying to mock.
And , like God, the Obamacare "flood" that necessitated the potemkin arc Obama built was entirely of Obama's making.
One of the few times I've seen a Maher quote and it's actually a joke - even a moderately funny one - at least I cracked a smile.
Maher must be steamed about Noah saving only MF pairs.
/via Belmont Club
“Is Obama an enlightened being? … Dismiss it all you like, but I’ve heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who’ve been intuitively blown away by Obama’s presence – not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence.” - Mark Morford, 2008.
How utterly unexpected, unprecedented and thought provoking.
Strike one, two and three.
Isn't there a crucifix we could just drop into a jar of urine and call it "art" and have it funded by a gov't agency?
It's intellectual mealtime on vacation. 'Pass the psychotic ramblings, please!' 'Mmm, chewy.'
I'd like to see him stand in front of a crowd of fundamentalist Muslims and spout his anti God rhetoric. Not because I'm a believer, I'm not, but because I'd love to see the insufferable little prick get his comeuppence.
Naw, Bill Maher is too chickenshit to do that. He's just a bully that throws cheap shots at those he knows won't strike back.
But there is nothing-- nothing-- worse than an evangelical atheist.
This^^^
And like all evangelicals, evangelical atheists tend to be loud and hog all the attention. In my experience, they're not illustrative of atheists as a rule.
People like Maher have twisted their atheism into a de facto religion, with all the pomp, circumstance and congregationalism that accompanies a religion.
But mostly, Maher has short guy/small dick syndrome who makes his living giving validation to others of his type, namely his audience. Nothing more pathetic than little, bitter people attempting to look down their noses in sneering disapproval.
After all, nobody expects The Atheist Inquisition!
Maher is shaking his fist at God. But he makes a better scriptural analysis of Noah and God's flood of extermination than elementary level Sunday School teachers who don't want to scare the young.
The story shows how much we need to fear God. But it ends with God promising Noah not to do it again provided men establish a death penalty for murderers.
Noah was righteous in his generations. God found that rare since Angel/human women procreation had ruined the rest of the people's generations.
So God was also a eugenics mass murderer.
The Last Days are a Noah repeat in that the DNA of Adam's race is again threatened by genetic cloning of monsters just to prove we are gods.
Noah's story is very relevant to the last days which are only awaiting the end to God's patience.
Yawn. Look at me! Look at me!
People like Maher have twisted their atheism into a de facto religion, with all the pomp, circumstance and congregationalism that accompanies a religion.
I often wonder if they are Socialists/Statists using atheism as a prop to bash religion.
It explains the need to compete: God gets in the way of "all within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."
Limited perspective.
God's view is bigger and broader. The story is not just what we experience.
For instance, there's 1 Peter 3:
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
That being said, the violence of the OT is a big embarrassment to a lot of Christians these days. So, it's not bad to make a case of it. It's a big issue in the OT and the flood story brings that out.
I grew up in the Methodist Church, and I have attended many services as an adult. I don't recall much discussion of Noah. Certainly, there were no requirements of literal belief of all details of the Noah story. To say Maher is ignorant of Christianity, is a good start. Also, its ironic that Maher's political beliefs require him to have faith in the premise that the world will suffer environmental catastrophies, including floods, as result of anthropogenic global warming. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
Atheism, when it is called that and a big deal is made of it, is just another religion. The comment above about astrology is right on.
Let me summarize:
Militant atheists are nasty and hateful.
Bill Maher is an attention seeking DB.
Maher wouldn't dream of making a comment like this in front of militant Muslims because he is a coward. He hates religious Americans but knows that they won't do anything to him.
The idea behind the comment is exceedingly unoriginal, being at least several thousand years old at this point.
All true. Yes.
Does anyone actually listen to Bill Maher anymore? In my head, he's sort of mixed up with Bill O'Reilly and that guy from Philly whose name I always forget, but who went to school with some of my family at St. Christopher's. Kind of the generic 'angry ex-Catholic Irish loud guys...'
As for Noah-- how do we know God *DIDN'T* warn other people? Maybe they just ignored God. It's like the Egyptian baby-killing thing in Exodus. God gave them NINE chances to let his people go. They could have given in on plague #1, no bad feelings.
They CHOSE to keep their slaves, and risk death doing it...
People often ignore God in the Bible. It seldom works out...
But ARGUING with God? That's fine. That gets you 'bosom buddy-descendents as numerous as the stars.' It's the IGNORING that ends in death....
Another interesting twist to the story of Noah is that lifespans in the time before Noah were much longer. Lives lived into the hundreds of years. Post-Noah you see lifespans that we are accustomed to. Maybe that was the genetic reset that God was trying to accomplish. "Term limits" if you will. I don't interpret everything in the Bible as verbatim truth, mind you. But it's interesting no matter how you judge it.
Who watches Bill Maher?
“What the hell are you getting so upset about?' [Yossarian] asked her bewilderedly in a tone of contrive amusement. 'I thought you didn't believe in God.'
I don't,' she sobbed, bursting violently into tears. 'But the God I don't believe in is a good God, a just God, a merciful God. He's not the mean and stupid God you make Him to be.'
Yossarian laughed and turned her arms loose. 'Let's have a little more religious freedom between us,' he proposed obligingly. 'You don't believe in the God you want to, and I won't believe in the God I want to . Is that a deal?”
Lovely to see Christians thrashing about as society has wrestled free of their grip.
In general atheism is booming and will be the dominant ideology by 2050.
At least you admit its a religion.
Atheism is a lack of belief, it's not a religion. Religion by definition is a belief in some supernatural force(s) that rules the universe. Atheists LACK this world-view, so they are not religious.
First off, God is not "a guy". But if there's a problem with killing babies, I don't see why he'd be a pro choice liberal.
Dead babies... abortion... get on it, conservatives... surely, you can connect this up and hit back... this stuff always connects... babeeees... that insufferable prick said babeeees....
Nice try, Professor.
Nature is an autonomous system designed and initiated by God. We ignore the known parameters of the system at our own peril. Perhaps Maher is referring to a corrupt conception of "original sin" or the evil "big bang" which initiated the deaths of billions.
As for human life, it is the freewill of women and men which has chosen to murder several million annually, and for the most trivial of causes, including: sex, money, ego, and convenience.
Apparently, "conservative" and "moral" are now interchangeable. I thought that there was a motivation to tweak moral individuals. In part to affirm just how helpless they are to prevent the worst human rights violations. Perhaps they would submit and accept the hopelessness of their situation.
All is fair in life and abortion, and progressive morality.
I have to admit that last part by Ann about "babeeees" was pretty hateful.
Ann - you can admit that you hate Evangelical conservatives. It's ok, nobody will fault you for it.
Atheism is a lack of belief, it's not a religion. Religion by definition is a belief in some supernatural force(s) that rules the universe. Atheists LACK this world-view, so they are not religious.
Let's just call some of them zealots, then.
n.n. why would God put in motion this universe which contains monstrous things like Gamma Ray Bursts that can potentially destroy all life in a section of a galaxy? Or supermassive blackholes at the centers of every galaxy? Why would God do this?
Your definition of religion is too narrow. If I put an atheist and an evangelical in the same room, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Both them have spiritual needs. They just worship different things.
EMD - I'm not denying there is a zelous faction among atheists. Probably a vocal minority that gets all the press coverage. The rest of us are just going about our lives trying to survive as best we can.
Fen - the difference is atheists aren't in violation of the 1st amendment like Christians. You know putting the 10 Commandments tablet in front of a court house, allowing prayers over a public school PA system, etc...
Though I hardly agree with Maher's politics, I can't wait for his commentary on a future film covering the Book of Job, in which God conspires with Satan to kill animals, children, slaves and to go on to torture Job with free advice from friends and his spouse!
As a physicist, I have fight to bring down Christians--the same who tortured Galileo, our first physicist.
As a humanist/feminist, I have to fight bring down Christians--the same who continue to deprive women of rights over their own bodies.
As a civil libertarian, I have to fight to bring down Christians who keep insisting on controlling our sex, drug and R&R lives, and who continue to force their prayer, crosses, crucifixes and moments of silence on us.
Astrologers are idiots, of course, but at least they and their followers haven't waged campaigns to torture and kill scientists, deprive women of their rights and take away our booze and pot and imprison and kill us for sex in the wrong position.
Christians be damned! I hope to help contribute to such.
The rest of us [atheists] are just going about our lives trying to survive as best we can.
But your displaced Faith gives us this:
“Is Obama an enlightened being? … Dismiss it all you like, but I’ve heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who’ve been intuitively blown away by Obama’s presence – not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence.” - Mark Morford, 2008.
Fen - atheism crosses political lines. Don't lump me in with the Obama cultists.
Why does it anger Christians so much that a person can be atheist but support capitalism? Who defined this right-wing bucket that says capitalism and Jesus go together? In fact historically speaking Christianity promotes socialism and if you look at the current Pope he reinforces it with his rhetoric.
Christians be damned! I hope to help contribute to such.
OR you could contribute to the Catholic charity that is trying to feed Venezuala.
OR you could contribute to the Catholic charity that is trying to feed Venezuala.
Why. If they can't feed themselves, screw 'em.
Alex:
You're right. Atheism is not a religion. It lacks a moral foundation. It has a decidedly materialistic perspective. It is a cult founded on a single, simplistic doctrine: rejection of theism. This primitive ideology has backed the worst commissions of murder, rape, and enslavement in history.
That said, the common thread between atheist and religious men and women run amuck is left-wing ideology, which seeks to form monopolies of capital and control through coercion or democratic leverage. Religion, or morality, unless it codifies left-wing ideology in its dogma, is tempered by a consistent moral philosophy which recognizes individual dignity and intrinsic value.
Fen - atheism crosses political lines. Don't lump me in with the Obama cultists.
But the point remains - atheists merely worship something else, be it Socialism or the State or some Dear Leader or themselves.
What do you worship? Global Warming?
Alex-- from a Catholic perspective, socialism isn't the right approach either...
Think 'Subsidiarianism'-- each function of society occurs at the LOWEST possible/practical level--- so, for instance, if feeding the poor can happen at a neighborhood level, it should happen there, not at the federal level.
There's a lot of disagreement about what functions are best handled at which levels of society. However, it doesn't make sense to say that 'socialism' is a Catholic idea, since for most of Church history, there weren't even nation states...
Why. If they can't feed themselves, screw 'em.
Ah, you worship the Self.
Bet there are wall-to-wall mirrors in your house, yes? ;)
Fen - I laugh at your binary thinking. It must be tough to be you in a world filled with 50 shades of gray.
There's a lot of disagreement about what functions are best handled at which levels of society. However, it doesn't make sense to say that 'socialism' is a Catholic idea, since for most of Church history, there weren't even nation states...
Sure historically the Catholic Church operated like a mafia-type organization until it transitioned into a NGO. However my point stands that modern Catholics support socialism.
Althouse at 8:36 a.m.
"We are not free to use marijuana until it is no longer a federal crime. That is, the law as it is now only unfairly, unequally burdens those who either believe rules must be followed or are so afraid of the government that it's not enough that the states have de-criminalized and the feds have said they will refrain from enforcement. That's an exquisitely special form of oppression."
Althouse at 1:01 p.m.
"babeeees... that insufferable prick said babeeees...."
Alex:
Why? I don't know. I don't possess knowledge of something which purportedly exists outside our system. Who am I to judge his motives. Perhaps the threat of annihilation is necessary for the proper function of the system. The same reason why human beings stagnate and recess (e.g. "spoiled child" syndrome) in a utopian environment.
As for black holes, they are grey holes, and theoretical. However, inference does not establish their existence. They do offer some comfort through a perceived balance of forces. People like structure and symmetry, and are predisposed to observing patterns in chaos.
Some might say I ride an invisible pony. Some may say I ride an imaginary pony. I shake my cowbell at them all.
So let's see, if drowning babies makes GOD an insufferable prick, why should we put up with people who support abortion?
Alex:
The First Amendment does not dictate a "separation of church and state". It only prevents establishment of a state religion. It is this tolerance, for better and worse, which has enabled the progress of a secular cult.
My cowbell can deliver both Guidance and Wrath. I ride the streets of unbelievers and let the cowbell strike judgment: their ears will know.
@lem, who wrote: "Who watches Bill Maher?"
4.1 million petite bourgeoise progressive bigots in any given week, which represents about 3.5% of all US households.
The hooves of my pony will clatter through bloody streets and vengeful fire. Through all of this my cowbell will lead. The Day is Coming.
"1. It's a joke; he's a comedian."
Maher suffers from Dick Gregory's Disease, where people keep calling you a comedian for years after you stopped being funny.
Alex: I laugh at your binary thinking. It must be tough to be you in a world filled with 50 shades of gray.
Gobbledygook.
Next, the "atheist" will be speaking in tongues.
It is a Fool who claims not to hear the cowbell. The cowbell leads the cows, and leaves the slaughterhouse for those who did not follow. Blood will be everywhere.
Fen - you do sound like one of those crazy Pentecostal types that DO speak in tongues.
I have never laughed at Bill Maher.
He beats black women.
"But the point remains - atheists merely worship something else, be it Socialism or the State or some Dear Leader or themselves."
Not necessarily.
I'm an atheist and I don't worship anything or anybody.
I'm the opposite of a statist-socialist.
I stand in awe of the universe, its beauty, its mystery. I'm thrilled to be alive! But I bow down before no one.
I too am part of the mystery of existence which puts me on equal footing with everything else. So what is there to to bow down to?
Theists are prone to suffer from the same egotism and bigotry that atheists do.
They often lump everyone that doesn't see things their way into a category of moral inferiority so they can scornfully look down on them and thus elevate their own standing.
Could that be a form of self worship?
"As a physicist..."
Have you met John Polkinghorne?
Or read this response by Peter Higgs about Richard Dawkins?
One of my good friends has her PhD in theoretical physics, works on nanotechnology, published in the top journals, and is one of the more dynamic Pentecostals I've met.
Which isn't to say there's not a critique to be made against religion. Just that "as a physicist..." doesn't add any weight to such. Equivalent to saying "as a plumber..." or "as a nurse..." or "as an airline pilot..." or any other job.
There are those who will believe the slaughterhouse is metaphorical until the Hammer strikes them forcefully in the back of the head. They will see the person in front of them succumb in this manner and will still believe it will not happen to them.
Paul - I pretty much subscribe to a similar world view. I am in awe of the universe every single day. When I stare at the sun* it fills me with wonderment.
* no trolls I don't literally stare at the sun, but you thought I did!
The Cowbell or the Hammer, we each choose our way.
He who rules the slaughterhouse runs the world. Cowbell or the Hammer: you must choose, or the choice will be made for you.
I like the previews for the film. The flood scene seems to be pretty well-done. In spite of everything, Hollywood has figured out that these movies will make money, lots of money, and so they will keep making them. Maher must be pissed. He would like to control information the way the Cubans do, but it just isn't happening, so the best he can do is try to poison information from other vantage points. That single paragraph from the Bible however will yield yet another blockbuster. How many blockbusters have his mindless rants yielded?
There is no third option, no matter what you may wish out of the fear in your hearts. When the heart is torn from the chest it will still beat with fear, if only for a few moments.
Your body will be hung lifeless from a hook; there is an infinite number of these hooks. There will always be enough hooks: such is the way of the slaughterhouse.
>Theists are prone to suffer from the same egotism and bigotry that atheists do.
Exactly. Both theists and atheists can only be judged as a class by their official philosophy. However, where that philosophy does not exist, or is inconsistent, then discernment demands a more nuanced, individual assessment.
The relevant concern is not their articles of faith, but the principles and actions engendered by their faith. Theists, atheists, and agnostics, that is to say all people, are each prone to deviance, individually, and less often as a class, when their egos lead them to mischievous actions.
Tyrone Slothrop said...
...there is nothing-- nothing-- worse than an evangelical atheist.
I'm not religious, but "evangelical atheist" is a term I will insert into my vocabulary.
Don't have TV in my house, but the best Maher show moment I ever saw was when Christopher Hitchens flipped off the audience.
The story of Noah is a theologically imbued folk tale. That's it.
Interestingly, some thousands of years ago when the Ice Age ended glacial ice dams across the world burst, causing mammoth floods, technically GLOFs, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods. There a few of these dams left, mostly in Nepal and Iceland. There was a biggie in Montana that popped....
About 10,000 years ago Lake Agassiz in Canada erupted through its dam. This lake was larger than all of today's Great Lakes combined. Some geologists think it caused global flooding and led to the Noah story.
May the righteous indignation of God crush out the proud and the unholy.
- Erik Satie, in performance directions inaccessible at the moment owing to boxes stacked.
The most important thing is to be left alone, not bothered by the religious.
The Amish are great. They have never interfered in my life or in my interests.
Baptists and Catholics are the opposite: they do nothing BUT interfere with my life. Why can't I buy a six-pack or a bottle of wine at Walmart on Sunday Morning?
Hint: it's not the Amiah, the Brethren, the Mennonites or the Atheists. It's the Baptists and
Roman Catholics who continue to demand the right to interfere in every facet of everyone's life. For that reason, and in self-defense, we need to condemn those Christianists and do all we can to bring them down.
Thank Darwin that the Christianists were given the Bible and we scientists the Bomb, and not vice versa!
Bill Maher is a dip thong.
Of course Bill Maher will say outrageous things. It's what he does. The real issue is how Democratic leaders will be called upon, to rebuke Maher since he is a million-dollar Democratic Party bundler. Here is a list of all of the columnists calling upon Democratic congressional leaders to condemn Maher:
Thanks for reading.
you lost me after you said he's a comedian. Facts not in evidence
Jimbino, the Catholics are not interfering with your desire for a nice Sunday cocktail. Good God, man! What would we do after Mass if we jumped on that train?
Maher. Soph. Great year in school.
Althouse must be trolling for page hits. When was Bill "the dogface boy" Maher ever smart or funny?
He's like John Stewart without the humor; Chris Hitchens without the intelligence; or Howard Stern without the good looks.
That people think he's smart and funny simply shows no one ever went broke underestimating the taste and intelligence of the American public. (BTW, I just made that phrase up - feel free to use it).
Bill Maher makes good click-bait.
Many physicists speculate that it is possible to posit God in many of the different worlds and dimensions available through string theory. Not most of these worlds and not necessarily in ours, but it's definitely possible that God exists in some of them. He might only be manifest in the fourth dimension or maybe the fifth........Give Maher a smidgen of credit. He criticizes Muslims with a sharper edge than Christians. He, by and large, refrains from knocking Dems, but he does take on Muslims.
Except that most conservatives are Christian and not Jewish, which Bill Maher is, I believe. The God of the Old Testament favored the Jewish people until such time as their disappointments led his to send Jesus to offer the salvation of grace. No more religion as law, instead religion as grace.
Why does Bill Maher hate his own traditions so much.
6. Dead babies... abortion... get on it, conservatives... surely, you can connect this up and hit back... this stuff always connects... babeeees... that insufferable prick said babeeees....
Unfortunately for conservatives, God is not anti-abortion. In fact, He aborts more babeeees than all other abortionists combined.
You got your tags wrong Althouse. Comedy and Maher don't belong in the same post.
BTW, I find it fucking funny that a man who can't make a point without an expletive deleted is "Smart".
A TV guy talks about a Hollywood movie and what he says is insulting and stupid. Why not talk about Hollywood and TV and the level of "discussion" they attain? And how the level of discussion has been sinking in a flood of stupidity being unleashed on the world as punishment for turning on the TV and listening to Maher
Trying to follow the "logic" of Maher's statement, and just can't get there.
On the other hand, it's just possible that Maher is an incoherent ignoramus.
Oops--didn't edit correctly. Maher is an incoherent ignorANUS.
Where do you live that you can't buy a bottle of wine at Wal-Mart on a Sunday morning? I live in a conservative area and we can buy booze around the clock. These days those kind of restrictions are more likely to be statist, rather than religious, in origin.
People of faith can have an productive discussion of the Noah story, and of the almost-sacrifice of Isaac, and of Sodom & Gomorrah, and of the deaths of the first-born Egyptians, etc., etc. There are people on this thread who would be capable of that. But that would require a different environment. If you know of a blog where that kind of discussion takes place, I'd love to hear about it.
Smilin' Jack:
Do you classify libertines/progressives as gods (presumably mortal) or god-like? Is this their justification for terminating human life by the millions without cause or due process for fiscal, hedonistic, or logistical ends? At least God (or Nature) can be forgiven because his (or her) motives are unknown, other than, presumably, to judge our fitness.
That really turns the libertine/progressive claims of human and civil rights interests upside down and inside out. Are they at least mortal beings? Do they conduct their business at the end of a gun or with threats of political, judicial, or social terrorism?
That said, God, or Nature, has, to our knowledge, murdered every human being that was ever conceived, and will likely murder every human being that will be conceived, and their little dogs, too.
Indiana doesn't sell alcohol on Sundays--
But when the state considers changing the law, it's not the churches who are fighting to keep it-- it's the Liquor store owners.
See, right now they can compete with the big chains by being family-run, and they like not having to work on Sunday. But if sales became legal on Sundays, they'd have to either work or lose customers to Walmart/CVS/the grocers.
But sure, blame the Christians for your inability to plan and buy your Sunday Beer on Saturday!@
The plus side of the recent surge in militant atheism is that we can all see what self-absorbed, arrogant, hateful jerks they are.
"As a physicist" you probably need to pick up a biography of Galileo, wherein you will discover that he was never tortured and he remained a devout (if disobedient) Catholic through his life.
Atheists, as a general rule, are laughably ignorant about their favorite whipping boy.
..there is nothing-- nothing-- worse than an evangelical atheist".
Sure there is. Suicide bombers, Jihadis flying airliners into skyscrapers...
Bill Maher and 95% of people who claim to be atheists are nothing more than Christophobes. They never say anything against any other religions--only Christianity. Just a bunch of whiney little bitches.
Bill Maher speaks out against Muslims ALL the time. As does Salman Rushdie who was on Maher's panel, obviously.
Bill Mahar spewing about the God of the Old Testament without any apparent understanding about the New Covenant makes no sense. Unsurprisingly.
I like Maher.
A lot of funny quips.
Imus used to find him girls when his father brought him into work at NBC, or some such deal.
Bill Maher speaks out against Muslims ALL the time
I must concur. Maher is one of the few ball-carrying liberals who does this on a regular basis.
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Habakkuk+1&version=NKJV
Bill Maher should start HERE and read through some of his H8 issues.
Maher doesn't think things through very well.
I wonder if he remembers what he said in 2010 when he found out that the most popular name for a baby boy in the U.K. was Mohammed:
"Am I a racist to feel alarmed by that? Because I am. And it's not because of the race, it's because of the religion. I don't have to apologize, do I, for not wanting the Western world to be taken over by Islam in 300 years?"
Just what does he sees as being an adequate counter-weight to the rise of Islam if not Christianity? Does he really think atheism will do the job?
The story of Noah is a theologically imbued folk tale. That's it.

I find the formation of the Black Sea by the Med breaking through the Bosporus to be a more likely oirigin story.
I can't remember the exact quote, but an ex atheist said something like "atheism and nihilism go hand in hand and nihilism sucks so bad who would want it to be true".Poor Maher. He's got nothing.
I think someone has the words Evangelical and Evangelist mixed up.
I can see Maher depicted as an Atheist Evangelist.
The God of the Old Testament favored the Jewish people until such time as their disappointments led his to send Jesus to offer the salvation of grace.
The Jews were chosen by God to give birth to the Messiah. He was not disappointed with the Jews.
Unfortunately for conservatives, God is not anti-abortion. In fact, He aborts more babeeees than all other abortionists combined.
And kills more people, but that's hardly a justification for homicide.
A little less trying to act like God and a little more following God, thank you.
Maher sneers.
Althouse giggles.
Homer snores.
I'm not saying he's Betamax 3000 or anything, but for a politician he's pretty funny.
"If you like your religion, you can keep your religion."
Should Mr. Maher have an unexpected heart attack this may not be so funny although potentially very informative.
I don't think we are in end times but we are in a pretty dangerous moment. I have no idea what Putin is trying to achieve but we have promised to help the Ukrainians in that exact situation now occurring. But will we? I think that Maher and people like him see that we won't because the pressure should come from him and people like him - from Obama supporters. And Maher isn't going to do that, he isn't going to say we took away the Ukrainian defense by promising our help and now we have to do that, help them. So at the exact moment when he decides to let down the Ukraine, when he decides he and his fellow liberals isn't going to press Obama in any way, we get a diatribe about how God is bad. Liberals are just so squalid.
Maher's still butthurt that Religulous bombed at the box office.
1. It's a joke; he's a comedian.
Then why are you having to explain the joke?
Funny how Liberals are all into Darwin until it comes to income inequality.
I don't understand why this observation would have to be resisted by any of the faithful. The text makes quite clear this action was taken as a result of a world filled with sinful people, such that only 8 of them were deemed worthy of another chance. Since Christians up until the 20th century generally believed that the wages of sin led to death, nobody would have been shocked to read about God visiting death on such a world - it would be interpreted as an act of justice.
Sure, God could have rid himself of the reprobate with a virus, massive heart attacks, or killing them all in their sleep, but one doubts Noah and his family would have gotten the point quite as clearly if everyone else had just mysteriously died. Also, to save any of the wicked, their death has to be a means that is both clearly an act of God but takes long enough to give them the chance to make the connection and repent.
Maher is tweaking on abortion, somewhat ironically since liberals worship the killing of babies. Granted, they aren't usually drowned in the liberal sacramental rite, but dismemberment without anesthesia doesn't sound any more merciful than drowning.
"Conservatives are always going on about how Americans are losing their values and their morality, well maybe it’s because you worship a guy who drowns babies."
Wait, does Maher think it's wrong to drown babies?
I wonder why he thinks that.
My name is camiliedbrono from Florida I have to give this miraculous testimony, which is so unbelievable until now. I had a problem with my Ex husband 2years ago, which lead to our break up. when he broke up with me, I was not my self again, i felt so empty inside me, my love and financial situation became worst, until a close friend of mine Lucy told me about a spell caster who helped her in the same problem too his name is Dr Shiva. I email Dr Shiva the spell caster and i told him my problem and i did what he asked of me, to cut the long story short. Before i knew what was happening my husband gave me a call and told me that he was coming back to me in just 2days and was so happy to have him back to me. We have two kids together and we are happy with ourselves. Thanks to Dr Shiva for saving my relationship and for also saving others own too. continue your good work, If you are interested to contact him and testify this blessings like me, the great spell caster email address is: hinduspelltemple@yahoo.com you are the best among all the spell caster online I hope you see my testimonies and also pray for my family too.
Furious_a,
Leftists are all into Darwin until you bring up income inequality, then they bring up the fact that humans as a species have the intelligence and morality to overcome the limitations of nature. Then you bring up genetically modified crops or vaccines and they're back to talking about nature being better again.

n.n. why would God put in motion this universe which contains monstrous things like Gamma Ray Bursts that can potentially destroy all life in a section of a galaxy? Or supermassive blackholes at the centers of every galaxy? Why would God do this?
His wonders to perform?
"That's what is interesting to me. For example, I don't believe in astrology, I think its silly - but I don't waste my time mocking it or the people who believe in it."
That's because astrology believers do not try to make the rest of us participate in astrology readings (in schools or at sports events or many other public functions); we are not asked to affirm our sun and moon signs when being sworn in at court; we have no prominent astrologers weighing in with august dignity in the media about the damnation faced by those of us who do not adhere to their precepts; no astrologers are getting state or local school boards to get science courses to incorporate astrological understanding of the universe into their materials; etc.
In short, atheists don't necessarily abhor Christianity qua Christianity--in fact, many of its moral/ethical precepts are quite admirable, and in direct opposition to the conservative dogma of today--it's the belief by Christians that their religious doctrines should be part of the public sphere, which should remain a secular space.
This reminds me of the time I saw "Tim Robbins on Maher's show wearing a t-shirt saying "What Would Jesus Bomb?". This was during the Iraq war and I'm sure Robbins thought it very clever and infuriating to Christians. My retort to the tv was, "How about the ENTIRE world, idiot?", thinking of the flood and Noah."
But it wasn't Jesus who (in the myths) flooded the world. It was God the Father who is the mass murderer of his own creations, not God the Son, (the hippie agitator!).
Fritz- There's also the comet theory: http://blogs.christianpost.com/comets-of-god/noahs-flood-was-really-a-tsunami-caused-by-a-comet-a-retranslation-of-genesis-711-8825/
Why does Maher believe that killing babies is wrong? To a materialist, wouldn't that just be a rational action by someone who wanted to have "his" genes be given an advantage in the old Darwinian struggle?
What if Heaven, or whatever it's actually called by those residing there, is so far beyond our limited frame of reference to describe as good, that the most horrible, awful human suffering would seem like stubbing your toe, relatively speaking?
Interestingly, some thousands of years ago when the Ice Age ended glacial ice dams across the world burst, causing mammoth floods
Is this before or after all the mammoths were dead?

The most important thing is to be left alone, not bothered by the religious.
The Amish are great. They have never interfered in my life or in my interests.
Baptists and Catholics are the opposite: they do nothing BUT interfere with my life. Why can't I buy a six-pack or a bottle of wine at Walmart on Sunday Morning?.."
Go to Mass;they're serving wine.
And kills more people, but that's hardly a justification for homicide.
Good point.
Here's a thought: What if God were the giver of life, the maker of all that live, who (post-Fall, at least) sends the Angel of Death (tell Bill Maher it's all over the Bible)--not really a perfect comparison with a murderous human being, in short?
What if the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away? What if man does not have the right to do what God does have the right to do?
What if a human being aborting another human being were not analogous to God, the Lord and Giver of life, taking away life?
What if---? Well, you get the idea. Because God allowed death into the world, one could argue that he's a murderer--one could, but he or she would be an idiot, sort of like a 10th-grader in a state of solipsistic rebellion, pathetically unaware that most youth go through the atheist stage and many recover from it.

Growing up in Chicago, as a kid I could buy a six-pack for my parents at the local bar, though the drinking age was then 21. Now, as an adult, I can't buy a bottle of booze of any kind in Georgia on Sunday and before noon on Sunday in Texas. And no booze is for sale ever in the many dry counties.
Here in Brazil, booze can be had anywhere at any hour. What really gripes me is that I can no longer pay a kid to pick up a bottle of beer or cachaça for me at the corner store, no doubt because of the influence of their new evangelical fanatics. I have had to train a dog to pick up a six-pack, which works only because there's no law against selling beer to a dog of any age.
I'm a life-long atheist and think Maher is pond scum.
"I'd like to see him stand in front of a crowd of fundamentalist Muslims and spout his anti God rhetoric. Not because I'm a believer, I'm not, but because I'd love to see the insufferable little prick get his comeuppence."
He insults Islam all the time. Obviously he wouldn't do this in a crowd of fundamentalists because he'd get killed.
Who is taunting for an argument here, Ann? :-)

Benedict XVI at Regensburg, 12SEP06:
"In the Western world it is widely held that only positivistic reason and the forms of philosophy based on it are universally valid. Yet the world's profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions. A reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures. At the same time, as I have attempted to show, modern scientific reason with its intrinsically Platonic element bears within itself a question which points beyond itself and beyond the possibilities of its methodology. Modern scientific reason quite simply has to accept the rational structure of matter and the correspondence between our spirit and the prevailing rational structures of nature as a given, on which its methodology has to be based. Yet the question why this has to be so is a real question, and one which has to be remanded by the natural sciences to other modes and planes of thought - to philosophy and theology. For philosophy and, albeit in a different way, for theology, listening to the great experiences and insights of the religious traditions of humanity, and those of the Christian faith in particular, is a source of knowledge, and to ignore it would be an unacceptable restriction of our listening and responding."
I wonder what god thinks of all this shit.

Jimbino, you have something there. As a child I could go down to the doorman in our apartment building and get a pack of Benson and Hedges for my mother or Marlboros for my father. He had a dozen or more choices of cigarettes in a little suitcase and I think they were 50, 70 cents, something like that and I would bring them upstairs to my mother but if they were for me nobody would ever known...so you have something there. We're certainly in a neoprohibitionistic age; I don't blame Christians for that, however.
Althouse, I reiterate that you are a dreadful person and that only suffering will improve you.
This is a testimony that I will tell to every one to hear. I have been married four 4years and on the fifth year of my marriage, another woman had a spell to take my lover away from me and my husband left me and the kids and we have suffered for 2years until I met a post where this man DR UKO have helped someone and I decided to give him a try to help me bring my lover back home and believe me I just send my picture to him and that of my husband and after 48hours as he have told me, I saw a car drove into the house and behold it was my husband and he have come to me and the kids and that is why I am happy to make every one of you in similar to met with this man and have your lover back to your self.
