After Lois Lerner re-asserts the 5th, Cummings yells at Issa and Issa cuts the microphone.

Issa is closing down the meeting, Cummings asserts what he calls a "procedural question" that's really a political scolding, and Issa cuts the microphone and walks out. It's pretty unpleasant. Here's the video:

why can't fifth ammendment rights be asserted piecemeal. Why do you waive them all or not at all.

KCFleming said...

Are there any prior 5th assertions over fictional accusations?

khesanh0802 said...

I don't think that's unpleasant. If the chairman closes the meeting then it's closed. If someone wants to keep talking then that's their business and they are free to do it on their own time. I saw Issa do nothing in the video that was inappropriate. In fact he was courteous enough to sit down until it was clear that Cummings did not have a question but was just making the same speech he has been making for months. You are too accustomed to faculty meetings where individuals are allowed to blather on regardless of the merit or applicability of what they have to say.

Seeing Red said...

If she's concerned for her safety, put her in jail. Solitary until she's ready to talk.

Shouting Thomas said...

So, the issue is boiling down to whether a white guy can talk back to a black guy.

Figures.

Bill, Republic of Texas said...

I don't understand this immunity issue. Either she waived her rights or she didn't. Hold her in contempt or give her immunity. Why all this fussy?

I guess a federal court has the last say on this issue so why didn't they take it to court months ago?

Exactly. Maybe she is the biggest fish to fry, but it's worth letting her walk away to find out.

Issa shouldn't have done that. While I suspect that Mr. Cummings has done his best to derail this investigation (and others), it just plays into Democrats hands.

If given immunity, why would she not say she was behind all of it? That may be the truth but we would never know. She would be free and clear plus she would protect the administration. She'd land a cushy job somewhere out of the spotlight and no one would pay for the crime.

RecChief said...

I suspect it is because court proceedings could take a long time, what with appeals and all. Or it is because Issa is wrong on his interpretation. I've given up on the idea that Congress doesn't want to cede its prerogatives to another branch of government.

This is no different than the stifling of debate exercised by Sen Reid as to what gets dealt with in the Senate, makes no difference to me that it was down in plain view. Elections have consequences.

Illuninati said...

I thought the reason Lois Lerner was invited back is because she was going to talk this time. It looks like someone got to her.

Elijah Cummings apparently thinks his role is to run interference for the Obama administration when they use the IRS to target and damage political opponents. Democrats have had plenty of time to justify their decision to politicize the IRS. First it was a few rouge agents. Now the story is that nothing was done wrong. Isa apparently didn't think his committee was the appropriate place to continue the whitewash.

Shouting Thomas said...

With the IRS now firmly established as a pseudo secret police force, I suspect that we are about to embark upon an era of flourishing black markets in the U.S.

Attempts to prohibit freedom of association, free markets and to hound opponents with secret polices forces inevitably lead to flourishing black markets, both economic and political.

Now that all the progressive market manipulations have failed, wage and price controls cannot be far off.

Go for it folks. Conceal everything. The government is your enemy. Do what you want to do, conceal it and ignore the enemy until you must do battle with it.

I have a question.

Ok. What is your question?

First let me make a few comments -

Seems to me it it is pretty clear Elijah Cummings was out of line - again.

And it looks like Ms. Lerner needs to make a decision as to which of her lawyers she wants to listen to.
Or the White House got surprised when they heard she was going in to testify.

The leftist fantasy of someone getting let away in handcuffs may yet come to pass!

I wonder if Harry Reid has any ties to Lois Lerner? we already know that the IRS leaked tax information to leftist groups.

"Reid claims an “old friend,” whom he refuses to name, has the down low on Romney. “The word’s out that he (Romney) hasn’t paid any taxes for 10 years.” “Let him prove that he has paid taxes, because he hasn’t.“

Gosh, now I know how Garage has so much fun with the Scott Walker stuff.

Welcome to leftist partisanship applied to the law, where the ACCUSATION is the conviction and where the ACCUSED has the burden to prove that the accusation isn't true.

We could probably apply the doctrine to many different segments of American life. Let's try it out:
Crack, You are Racist. Prove that you aren't. (but remember that the accusation is the proof that you are, and you must provide to me, the person making the accusation, proofs that I will accept, and if I don't accept them, the accusation stands)

Don't count on it. The USA could easily slide into a corrupted semi-authoritarian government in which there are still elections but the playing field is so tilted towards the left that the outcome is inevitable. Venezuela is in the end stages of that type of lefty government. There is no reason to think that our country is immune to that contagion.

You ought to be very concerned when Nixonites or Obamites are in power and use the power of government and scary powerful Fed Agencies like the IRS and Justice Dept to try and destroy people in the opposition.
It has to stop, or like when Nixon was gone, soon Obama will be gone. When the shoe is on the other foot we do not want a perpetuation of use of the IRS, FBI, AG, EPA to harass, intimidate, and criminally prosecute "enemies on a list" the next Administration is tempted to compile.
Agree with McCullough. Stopping this abuse of government power by partisans is worth the price of giving the despicable Louis Lerner immunity. So she can testify before Congress and hopefully in court as well - on which even more powerful Obamites gave her her marching orders.

I watched the whole thing, including Rep. Cummings attempt to make a political point.

Issa asked a series of questions of the witness, and she refused to answer any question, including one about whether or not her lawyer said she planned to testify. Chairman Issa ended the panel. The only incrimination that Lerner has to worry about is her proclamation of innocence during her opening statement 9 months ago being outright perjury.

Rep. Cummings was definitely bringing up talking points from the previous year that were just shown to be false through the evidence provided by the Chairman and Lois Lerner refusing to answer. To summarize Rep. Cummings, the internal IRS investigation shows that the only the Cincinnati office was doing bad things, Lois Lerner did nothing criminal, she was just a terrible and incompetent manager who didn't stop the Cincinnati office from doing bad things. (Seriously, listen to his speech, he throws Lois Lerner under the bus.)

Now, no disrespect for Rep. Cummings, but I'd trust an Inspector General in this current government about as much as I'd trust a dog in a butcher shop.

Why are Republicans "determined to destroy themselves?"

Culture trumps politics, and the culture has shifted - but the conservatives haven't. They keep behaving like nothing's changed and it's going to bite them on the ass (as it has in all the last major elections) until they do so.

What are their "recent showings?" that so convince you?

Backing MItt Romney was where I broke with the party. A pseudoscience-spouting member of a racist cult for president? Yeah, THAT was going to work. He got 17% of the black vote.

My personal favorite is loudly proclaiming MLK was a Republican - when he was the one who told blacks to stop voting for the Party because it was racist. Along with all their lies about slavery, etc., THAT's another great example of the kind of historical deception (of themselves and attempting to do to others) they've bought into that will ultimately destroy them.

The line of Post-Trayvon black dead (what are we up to now? 10? 12?) and the excuses conservatives make for them.

Honestly, I can't think of ANYTHING conservatives are doing to help themselves right now - it's all bad - and they might as well get their KKK hoods and torches, and ride again, because the jig is up.

Eventually, the black racists will get their revenge. It might take a few more generations, but they'll make the white man pay in some manner or other. And then the white man will finally break free of his bondage and give an "I had a dream" speech and gain freedom from the tyranny of the black man.

I kind of like this debate style that I learned from Crack Emcee. All you have to do is act like any statement from your opponent is confirmation of your accusation; keep repeating it, and repeating it, and repeating it; never once actually think; repeat.

Now I need to figure out a catchy way to highlight this very complicated and nuanced idea.

Hey, I know, why don't I just do the thing that the leftists accuse conservatives of doing, boil it down to something that will fit on a bumper sticker! "Hope and Change" is taken, as is "War on Women", as well as "400 years of slavery!" and "capitalism sucks", "Occupy _________*" (*fill in your own truth here).

Anyone got any ideas? Kinda refreshing the freedom from thinking that following leftist methods allows. Did I mention that I am a Republican? Never mind that I don't hold any views that the GOP espouses though I am not sure the GOP believes its own rhetoric either.

There have been several Stand Your Ground type cases recently where the person shot was white or Hispanic and the shooter was black. And there hasn't been a media circus, because there hasn't been an "us" vs "them" angle to the story.

To gain some understanding of what is going on, look at how the people framing the story break things up into "us" and "them".

To Crack, "us" is African-Americans and "them" is everyone else. Because the Martin case involved his "us" being shot by "his" them, he's upset, but he doesn't care when "us" shoots "them". To many of us commenters on the right, Zimmerman and the other shooters were all "us" regardless of race and the criminals they shot were all "them"; "us" is law-abiding Americans, "them" is criminals".

To the 'Progressive Left' it would seem, "us" is the Democratic Elite in power, and "them" is the right. Abuses of government power that hurt "them" can be ignored.

It may be wrong - I think it is - but the media is in the tank for Democrats, especially those who are further to the left. If the GOP doesn't recognize this and avoid bad optics like the plague, the media will do for them today what they did for McCain and Romney before. Anything and anyone can be made to seem bad as long as those evaluating are never held to any standard of honesty. That's why complaints that Reps just deal with it are so disingenuous. They are dealing with it, by pointing out the "optics" are not true and those shaping the optics cannot be trusted.

Crack wants the Republican party to change its substance, specifically to go out of its way to pander to his group (which would imply out-pandering the Democrats) in order to deal with the problem of bad optics.

We can already see the media dying, partly as people recognize the partisan nature of the media, partially from unrelated economic changes. When it dies, the country will have an unrelated and unforeseeable set of new problems to replace the ones we have now.

If one of those problems is that the country has broken down into a set of Groups that only look out for "us", the country is as good as dead. Once "us" is no longer Americans as a whole, but designated groups to be pandered to, we're toast. Right now, for the most part, most Republicans have resisted the lure of identity group pandering (there are exceptions). Pandering would possibly benefit the party at the expense of the long term health of the country.

To make things worse for Crack's argument, looking at policy solely as game theory suggests that it would be too expensive to bribe African Americans as a group out of the Democratic Elite's grasp, as the African American group elites are members of the Democratic party. Better to pander to the less-entrenched Asians or Hispanics if you're buying votes with government money.

Give me a break.

That sounds like the Tea Party from here. And whites, historically.

"Once "us" is no longer Americans as a whole, but designated groups to be pandered to, we're toast."

But, rather than do ANYTHING to make blacks finally feel like Americans (reparations, apologies, setting our history straight - anything) whites would rather be like the folks on this thread, and fold their arms, screw up their faces, and demand everybody still do what they say because WHITE.

You'll never get a country that way - not after what whites have done. Nobody's just going to walk away from it. It's our families, not some abstract shit y'all's dealing with.

All you're describing is digging the hole deeper.

Right, because whites did NOTHING to make Blacks feel like Americans. Integration and ending of Jim Crow is apparently nothing. Blacks got what they wanted, what more do they want? And how do you expect Whites to set the history straight other than by, I don't know, ending segregation and integrating black people. WHat you asked for has already been done.

The Obama admin defense is that there is no IRS misconduct, and that any attempt to investigate is just another example of "racism."

Sound familiar?

It's just another repetition of the theme that all criticism of Obama is veiled racism.

Crack is acting as spokesman for the Obama admin.

Good question. Why is Lerner taking the fifth at all?

Issa doesn't want any actual facts coming out of his little Kangaroo Court.

Actaully the person pleading the 5th seems to be the one that doesn't want facts to come out.And in fact the whole point of the questioning of Lerner is to get her to put those facts on the record. So, if you wants facts, why are you so adamant about defending a witness who continues pleading the fifth.
Do you have that same standard when it comes to Chris Christie who has NOT plead the fifth?

Shorter Garage: "Look, it's a crook."

Kenneth Starr redux. "Look, it's a pervert."

Garage, you have more deflections than the Chicago Blackhawks.

Stopping at this point and we are back to the future with the Nixon Administration.

The rest is just noise. The racism accusations are getting more hysterical simply because the charge is losing it's totemic value and therefore has to be amped to overcome the tuning out effect. For every charge that X is against Obama because of his race the jujitsu is the only reason Y is for him is because of his race. The charge of racism should be kept for acts of real racism.

What isn't mentioned is whether or not Obama's policies and leadership characteristics would be acceptable to those who oppose him if he were white and those that support him so strongly would support the same policies and leadership character if he were white. To me, he sucks. Period, end of story as a leader because of his policies and leadership characteristics. If he was white I would be just as opposed.

3/5/14, 5:10 PM"

I suspect because this Administration is morphing into an even more crooked, corrupt and certainly by far more incompetent re-boot of the Nixon Administration. It's no mean feat of accomplishment to have all of Nixon's vices and none of his virtues. In short JR this goes all the way to the top. I suspect that if the Republicans do well in the fall next year the Democrats are going to see a reprise of Watergate with the irony of having Obama be the Democrat's Nixon. All the same it won't end the same, Obama isn't going to resign and isn't going to be impeached and removed but will be reduced to even less than what he is now. After 40 years the Democrat's have it coming.

Personally I have always considered Obama to be as much a White man as a Black man, and definitely more of a White American man than a Black American Man.

Prior to his "career" in Chicago Obama had no idea what the life of the average Black American was like.
