"Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who has been eyeing a 2016 presidential run since his battles with labor unions made him a Republican star..."

"... is in the midst of dealing with the fallout of two criminal investigations at home that could complicate his move to the national stage."

So begins a big, conspicuous piece in The Washington Post, which doesn't say anything that's not familiar to those of us here in Wisconsin, including the spin of last paragraph:
If conservative groups succeed in undermining the investigation’s legitimacy, the result could ironically convert the probe from a possible Walker weakness into an unexpected strength, rallying conservatives around a governor perceived to be holding firm against liberal bullies.
By the way, 3 years ago today, in the Wisconsin protests, which included teachers who were calling in sick to absent themselves from the classroom, doctors stood on a street corner under a sign that read "I'm a doctor/Need a note?" They were real doctors, putting their names on notes that the protesters could use to excuse their absence from work:

At first I thought it was some sort of comic street theater, but it was, apparently, real doctors, defending what they were doing.... I asked if it was dishonest or unethical, and the answer was that everyone has symptoms, perhaps a migraine, diarrhea, or insomnia. I suggested "activitis."....

I spoke to another doctor... and I asked him whether he was worried, with all the cameras here, about his reputation. He said no. But he didn't use a political defense. He didn't say he supported the protesters and wanted to help them. He said people really do have symptoms, and it's a normal thing for doctors to believe patients who report symptoms and to write excuse notes for them. People call doctors all the time to get the required notes, and doctors trust the patients to report their symptoms properly. He ticked off the symptoms I've listed above.
(The doctors were later reprimanded.)

MOJO: " Another thing: when is criminal prosecution supposed to be dependent on the capabilities or cost of the defense? Either Walker committed a crime or he didn't."

Oh no no no.

For the left, the very fact that Walker will defend himself against garage's friends is PROOF, PROOF I tellya of his guilt!!

Oh, sorry.

As Cliff (the "conservative" snort) says "probable" guilt.

Good old Cliff, employing that "probable" guilt line.

What a very very very good concerned "conservative" citizen.

Drago said...

Cliff the "conservative": "Oh, and also he has been terrible at job creation. Separate issue of course, but what's the attraction to a guy who abused taxpayer dollars, cheated in college, and has most the absolute worst job creation record of any current governor? How does that make him a republican star?"

I defy you to parse that and have it not sound like a garage post.

Matt said...

Cliff, you are doubling down on stupid. Walker cheated in college? Evidence? Regarding the emails, I went to Huff Post figuring they would give the dirty details. (I am not going to read the emails as I have better uses of my time.) Huff Post showed nothing incriminating in their article.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/19/scott-walker_n_4815704.html

Additionally, Cliff, you provided no links to support your position. Why not?

If Walker is so awful, why the need to try and play “Gotcha!” when there is not evidence to support the charge? Just focus on the evil, awful things he actually has done. Cliff, you are quickly heading towards “ignorable”.

Garage is also displaying the dumb. When the government is investigating possible criminal actions, only a fool does not have a lawyer. When the investigation is this long lasting and large in scope, it gets expensive. You are arguing he should not defend himself with a lawyer, or, being generous to your position, he should not get the best lawyer he can afford. You are criticizing Governor Walker for not being foolish. That is dumb on your part.

Walker's crime is governing while Republican.

Chef Mojo said...

In the end, here is why there's no there, there. With THIS kind of pressure on the lefties, you know damn well they'd toss out an indictment - ANY indictment - against Walker to get this monkey of their backs.

Let's go back to the WaPo article!

A sealed judicial opinion issued earlier this year and obtained by the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page has fueled the effort. The document showed that a judge quashed a set of subpoenas in the probe, ruling that prosecutors had failed “to show probable cause that a crime was committed.”

The Journal editorialized that the ruling vindicated their suspicion that the “probe is a political operation intended to shut up Mr. Walker’s allies as he seeks re-election this year.” Prosecutors will likely appeal the ruling.

In its lawsuit, the Wisconsin Club for Growth, one of 29 right-leaning groups that have received subpoenas in the matter, charged that the still-secret probe is “calculated to chill protected speech” and therefore violates the civil rights of the group and its leader Eric O’Keefe.

David Rivkin, a Washington-based lawyer for the Club for Growth, said that already, the investigation has largely halted the group’s political activities in the state. He said the probe has sidelined the anti-tax group from weighing in on behalf of a $500-million tax cut Walker is now advocating, while the secrecy rules inhibit its ability to fully defend itself. Even the group’s federal complaint is heavily redacted in deference to the John Doe rules. “This is worse than anything I’ve ever seen,” Rivkin said of the secrecy. “It’s Kafkaesque. . . . And bad things happen when there is no sunlight.”

The lawsuit also accuses Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm, a Democrat who launched both probes, of political bias. It notes, for instance, that there has been no indication that any left-leaning groups have faced similar prosecutor’s scrutiny though unions were active in the election as well.

If conservative groups succeed in undermining the investigation’s legitimacy, the result could ironically convert the probe from a possible Walker weakness into an unexpected strength, rallying conservatives around a governor perceived to be holding firm against liberal bullies.

I'm thinking someone in Milwaukee is getting a little hot under the collar...

Garage, I know that $750,000 seems like a lot of money to you and that in your world only a guilty person would spend that to defend themselves. But that is because you haven't looked at the statistics on convictions on cases brought by the government against individuals. In Federal cases it is north of 90%. So, in the real world, the world where Walker and I live, it is better to be safe than sorry, better to pony up and hire first rate counsel than it is for the government to come down on you and 1. freeze your assets making it impossible to hire decent counsel, 2 spend limitless amount to pursue you (how much, by the by, has the State of Wisconsin spent? Do you think it could be as much as $750,000? Really?)

That Walker would send emails and discuss having campaign meetings on taxpayer time is the issue, regardless of what server it was on.

Simply amazing that Althouse and her followers defend such abuse of taxpayer dollars. The Obama excuses are the best - even for such dimness as is found here. Obama might be as or more corrupt but that sure don't change the fact that Walker sure looks guilty of election fraud and taxpayer theft.

Garage, as I previously stated, I would never vote for a Democrat. However, that does not mean I would vote for the Republican. In our last gubernatorial election in Minnesota, the choices were the godawful, self-admitted “worst senator” and long time drug abuser Dayton versus the Republican, Emmer. The Democrats put out a commercial that stated that Emmer was a two time DUI offender. I was shocked as it was an oddly specific charge. So, I looked it up and, sure enough, he was a two time DUI offender. I believe DUI is practically attempted manslaughter. As such, I could not and would not (and didn’t) vote for Emmer. I picked the most interesting name on the ballot, which I believe was the Green Party candidate.

To get to the point, I would not vote for Walker if he were a criminal. However, the critics keep failing to produce anything. Y’all need to provide evidence! And a reasonable explanation as to why there are no actual charges! And to be clear and upfront about my position now, is it substantial or is it on par with speeding? But we are nowhere near this point as nothing has been produced that implicates Walker.

Anyone who understands basic logic knows that saying that a conviction would suffice to lose Matt's vote does not in any way imply that there is nothing short of a convication that would lose Matt's vote. He never said he would vote for any Republican who's managed to avoid a conviction, rather that he wouldn't vote for any Republican who had been convicted.

"Misuse" of taxpayer money isn't that, by the way. At federal levels, we've seen even more blatant misuse of public dollars -- by both parties -- to campaign, that came up nada. So, IF I'm to believe Walker somehow broke the law, I've got to re-evaluate a lot of other people too and seek some sort of understandable level of badness that the accuser will accept.

Otherwise, it's all just political.

Matt Sablan said...

Also: If you're accused of a crime, it is your right to have counsel. Implying someone who avails themselves of that right is guilty for doing so is inherently against the very foundational principles of our justice system -- if not morally bankrupt at the core.

@Jay, there is a certain mindset endemic to the Democrat party that the accusation all by itself is proof of guilt. So we saw the KKK -- 100% of whom were loyal Democrats -- lynch Black men for allegations that they spoke disrespectfully to a white woman. So we see today campus kangaroo courts where a woman's allegation of unwanted sexual advances are adequate grounds for expulsion. So the man in question can prove he was never anywhere near the little piece of work? She alleged, therefore he is guilty, therefore he must suffer. So it is with Progressive feminism in the 21st century.

Which brings us to garage. What we see is that all the necessary conditions are present -- person belongs to a category he hates (Republican politicians) and there exists an allegation. Consequence: proof (in his mind) of absolute guilt. He is at one with his progenitors in the KKK.

And then what?

Run a 500k campaign ad and hope people forget about lawyer fees and embarrassing emails?

The seriousness of the charge is more important than actual evidence of a crime.

It's typical leftist Alinsky horseshit.

Still no ponies found in that pile of horseshit I see.

Implying someone who avails themselves of that right is guilty for doing so is inherently against the very foundational principles of our justice system -- if not morally bankrupt at the core.

Matt, that's because leftists don't really believe in American style justice. It's all about using the trappings of Government to punish their opponents and rewards their friends. It's about winning, not justice, or fair elections and even less about honesty. Its about power.

That's why when the GOP wins, it must always be portrayed as illegitimate and/or criminal, with never ending investigations that produce nothing. But when THEY win they say "Shut up, we won."

Cliff, I was in law enforcement for 26 years. Your evidence is very weak to nonexistent and your utter reliance on leftists style arguments about "the seriousness of the charge equal his guilt" just screams "lefty troll".

Saying "I'm a conservative" doesn't make your lefty arguments more legitimate. The Community Organizer training your received to pose as a "concerned conservative" assumed, wrongly, that non-leftists are too stupid to notice you parroting the lefty boilerplate.

That's why you remain strictly Amateur Hour.

Come back when charges are actually filed.

You should go down to the Capitol and have a circle jerk with the Solidarity Singers! You should write a song. Call it "Victory". I mean Walker is still governor. And will be re-elected. And public employees still have to pay into their pension, and into their healthcare, and have virtually no collective bargaining rights, but Walker isn't talking to the press on Thursday, February 20, 2014!

"What does lameness look like? This what lameness looks like!"

You had a DAY and a HALF to produce your evidence of Walker's wrongdoing and all you have to show for it is that he hired a lawyer to defend himself against corrupt DemoCRAT prosecutors who were slapped down by a judge for their worthless subpoenas and he -- horrors! v--spent money on his reelection campaign.

Maybe you really are as stupid as most people here say, but I've always thought you had enough gray matter to realize that the two conditions you postulate -- mind you, after a day and a half of furious research and breathless countdown -- are common, in fact every Democrat politician eventually does both of those two things: hires defense attorneys and runs ads to be elected. Therefore under garagelogic we can surmise that all politicians are crooks.

We don't need you for that. We have Cookie to tell us that. And we don't need him either because all it proves is that Fen's Law is like gravity: irrefutable and obvious to every sentient being.

garage mahal said...

I didn't have to do a fucking thing. The emails are speaking for themselves all around the internet.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Yes they are. I particularly like Walker's email telling his staff to stick to official business and leave the campaign work for outside office hours. It also tells me you are more insane than the prosecutors who have ruined their careers by acting like rabid dogs instead of agents of the executive branch.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Garage you have singlehandedly succeeded in converting bystanders into Walker fans. Thanks!

Intriguing.

The emails are speaking for themselves all around the internet.

Yes. And they're saying "This much was spent investigating THIS? Really?"

Meade said...

Nothing in the new batch of emails incriminates Walker in any way. But we already knew that: if there was evidence of criminal activity, prosecutors would have filed charges. Instead, they shut down that probe without charges against the governor.

Now they seem intent on trying to score points in the court of public opinion that they didn't dare try in a court of law. And Democrats have stripped even the thin of veneer of non-partisanship from the probe by going all-in to exploit it for partisan advantage.

No YOU are the one who said with baited breath that we would all see Walker's crimes revealed in 3...2..1 and then POOF! A nothingburger, a none-event a twelve-minute countdown to 12 hours of prevaricating followed by twelve hours of squirrel-spotting interrupted only by increasingly frenetic blamestorming while you allege that (1) hiring a lawyer is prima facie evidence of guilt and (2) somehow suddenly everyone using email should be aware of how the packets are routed through various servers and that not knowing was some kind of thoughtcrime, and finally that (3) spending money getting reelected is really really shady (although not criminal in your mind, I think).

So YOU called your shot and YOU failed to nail the target. Just. Like. The. Whole. John. Doe. Fiasco. Itself.

POOF!

So what laws did Walker break with this email system? Sounds like a fanatical left-wing prosecutor is overstepping bounds. Well, Walker was never a real Presidential candidate for 2016. I hope he wins re-election this November.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

I hate to step in and disagree with Alex, not because I always agree but because I enjoy his comments so much. Would that I were so pithy.

But, I'm thinking if Walker can elicit Palin-level left-wing paranoia and overreach like THIS, then I might line up early to vote for Walker in a primary a couple years down the road. Hell we might see Garage go completely Sullivan on us by then!

Sarah Palin's uterus made Sullivan hysterical in 2008. Women don't appear to excite garage.

Also, the Walker reelection itself will be a test of garage's WDS -- whether he can self-medicate or will need an intervention.

So YOU called your shot and YOU failed to nail the target. Just. Like. The. Whole. John. Doe. Fiasco. Itself.

Your frantic need to defend Walker fuels me. Honestly. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Walker is going to be dogged with questions why the emails show he was actively involved with the illegal computer network that was set up in his office. He can no longer credibly deny any knowledge. He will be asked why he tried to keep a lawsuit secret related to a woman who starved to death in a county supervised facility. He will be asked why so many in inner circle sent vile and racist emails around. Pass the popcorn, as they say.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Hey garagelogic I'm not DEFENDING Walker I'm CONDEMNING you for your obsession with him.

Um, Walker paid 750k because he thought prosecutors had nothing? What planet are you on right now?"

Where is the limit? For example, if Obama spends millions of dollars to make no sure that no one has access to his university records, and prosecutes people who try to get access to his records, does it mean that his university records are abysmal?
How about Lerner, she refused to testify about IRS corruption. Do we all agree that she is a criminal?

My personal favorite from the garagelogic archives is the "I don't have time to address that" from earlier today.

PRICEless! Comedy gold, Man. Yeah, that's the ticket. "I'd love to nail the governor for his crimes against humanity but, y'know, I don't really have time to deal with it after spending 21 fucking hours combing through emails to get bupkis."

Gets me every time, G Man. Geez my sides hurt.

It is no longer a router or funnier still a server. It is now an entire "illegal computer network."

You cannot make up stuff this stupid, this crazed, this lunatic. It is truly outstanding. Wisconsin. On Wisconsin. Where the prosecutors don't count the hours or the costs!!!

garage mahal said...

It is no longer a router or funnier still a server. It is now an entire "illegal computer network."

It produced a lot of great material. All free bad publicity. What's not to like?

garage mahal said...

Even Reince Penis shows up in the emails.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

With plenty of free bad publicity for out-of-control prosecutions for political vendettas. Yeah, that worked out well for everyone involved. Nice to know if politicians have R after their name they can be hunted for sport, even after judges tell the wacko county prosecutors to chill out. Lotsa respect for the law you show there garagelogic!

Those wacky Republican DA's hunting Walker for sport :(

Michael said...

I wonder how many of those emails have been "unsealed" by now? Three long years of sitting on these and no indictment.

I would spend less time muttering about Walker and more time in finding competent prosecutors if the evidence is right there in front of our faces with all the router traces still on them. Or illegal computer network traces. Or server traces. Or some damn thing. Because he got emails from them! Has anyone thought to dust his inbox?

garage mahal said...

What's the hurry? It took them a long time to get Blago.

Michael said...

Hilarious. Dude, they have quit. They have given up. But maybe you could round up the drum circle and have a go at revving it up.

Walker & Co just filed a 3rd lawsuit trying to stop John Doe II. Anonymously. They really dont want this one going ahead any further. In wingnut land that proves innocence I suppose. Good times.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

You can't have a John Doe II when now we all know the target is Scott Walker.

Pitiful, Garagelogic.

You used to have some game and kept things interesting. Now you just do the sock-puppet imitation Garage shtick. Oh well. You're out of good material, the prosecutor is out of plausible reasons to keep his geek show going, and I'm heading for the exit sign soon too. See ya around Dickhead!

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Michael: I couldn't bail on this fascinating study in turdmindedness without complimenting you on the post @ 3:12.

Yes they should definitely dust his inbox and if it was me -- instead of some richard-cranium-type DA dude -- I would start by dumping the spam filter into a fine mesh screen (like a Tyler 62 maybe) and see if any unopened secret emails are stuck in the muck there. Some of the secret routers also have custom firewall set-ups that can overheat and trap sticky messages in there. Clean it ALL out that way no stone has gone unturded.

That's no typo.

garage mahal said...

Inga: No, the investigations are secret, the servers are known. Or is it the routers? The cost of investigation is certainly secret.

There's no better example of living in a political bubble than the liberals in this thread hyperventilating about these e-mails. The general public is going to give this 30 seconds of attention (at most) and come away with a big yawn. No charges against Walker. Nothing there of substance or even, of interest.

By Monday, the left will have exhausted itself on this topic and it will be forgotten with nothing new to say.

And let's be honest about this: if what Walker is alleged to have done is such a huge crime against humanity and the public, then in a fair world 90% of public union employees in Wisconsin (include public school teachers) should have been charged and suspended during the recall.

But, by all means, live in your bubble. It's so comforting there, I'm sure.
