At the 3:41 Café...

Untitled

... am I the only one awake? The only light is the computer screen and the "on" dots for electronic things. The view out the window beyond the screen vaguely reminisces about yesterday's "Impression, sunrise":

Untitled

The plume of steam from the heat plant catches whatever ambient light there might be here near the shore of Lake Mendota, in the middle of the night.

No, you are not the only one.

Having mother-sat until late, I fell asleep fully dressed in front of the news as soon as I arrived home. (Dementia is exhausting.) I woke up at 4 remembering I'd left my Kindle in the car. Anybody else ever kill the screen of a device leaving out in freezing weather? After a trip outside in the cold I'm wide awake. Still.

Momma was fascinated by my Kindle Fire. Kills me because she wouldn't use the iPad I gave her and passed it on to a grandkid. Mostly she couldn't remember to use her finger tip instead of her fingernail and would give up in frustration. I'd had high hopes for the iPad as she reads every piece of writing she sees. Aloud. Then forgets and reads it again. On the road she'll read the brand plate on every car that goes by. Then manages to fake a conversation about that particular car.

Mom isn't really so bad. Sister's mentally sharp 92 y.o. m-i-l has just started hallucinating her dead husband and cooking dinner for him. Then calls the daughter 600 miles away when she can't find him after food is on the table.

Sorry, ramblings of an overly tired mind. Will I delete before posting? For some reason, no.

Hi, Christy. It's good of you to take care of your mother and to maintain your spirit about it. Sorry the Kindle froze to death.

Thanks for the kind words, Althouse.

You were not the only one. I was reading a book of Reconstruction.

I might have got up to take a pee and nasal spray. Can't remember.

At 3:41 I was like hey, where'd she go? And then I turned over and dreamed a sweet dream of her.

You couldn't have waited just 3 more minutes?

Bah, I suck at math. Need more coffee.

Professor, I hope you don't read about this horrific story.

3:41 AM is a lot more fun if you're coming at it from the other side.

I don't think so. When I'm tired, I'm tired. It's a struggle. I fell asleep around 8 last night. Having slept, I felt fine, and I love the pre-dawn period. As long as I've had enough sleep so I'm not annoyed at having insomnia, I think it's a wonderful time of day.

I do believe in that 2 sleeps theory that popped up a year or so ago. I am up quite a lot from 2-4. I hate all those LEDs. But they do light the way through a dark house so I can get to my computer which is probably 60' away from the bed, down a long, dark hallway, through the kitchen and into what was supposed to be a dining room but it turned into my office. I counted all the electronic lights once. Futile. I don't want to admit how many are really here. Even the fridge has 3 separate ones. The phones show their places, the TV's, the printers, coffee pot, the microwave; you name it, it has an LED.
