"Freshman Nicholas Wright said students felt trapped, bored, hungry and thirsty as they waited for someone to bring them home."

"He said the school had enough sandwiches to feed the girls but not the boys, and a fight broke out between students at one point," at North Atlanta High School, in yesterday's ice storm.
“We were all pent up, and there was really negative energy,” said Wright, who caught a ride home with a neighbor at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. “I would have much rather been at home than spending one more second there.”
Hey, now. What's going on?! Don't discriminate based on gender, teachers! If I were a teacher there, I'd be all about making the students feel that keeping them there made sense, and it was a good, camp-like situation, and I would want it to be something that they'd remember for the rest of their lives as a spontaneous and pretty nice occasion.

ADDED: Alternate interpretation: Maybe the school thought it was a good lesson for the young people to follow the "ladies first" tradition. In a situation where there is not enough food, who should stand back and allow others to eat? Perhaps every male — or every southern male? — should know to suffer some deprivation for the comfort of the females. But Mr. Wright hadn't gotten that message. If that was the lesson, the teachers on the scene should have communicated it, but perhaps that is not possible in a culture that has refrained from saying anything like that.

There are NEVER enough sandwiches to feed teenage boys.

Althouse, you must remember this! :)

The Georgia Governor and Atlanta Mayor come off looking extremely bad in this. Totally unprepared for something that was very well forecast.

This happened to us once at a Boy Scout Camp. I was a Boy Scout and we were doing a 30 mile hike. The weather got very bad and the camp had us come back to the main hall where they usually serve big dinners. On the other side of the hall were Girl Scouts already in their sleeping bags. The female Girl Scout Leaders patrols the DMZ like it was Checkpoint Charlie. In the morning, the girls were fed first and then the boys -- more to keep us completely separated than anything else. However, if the camp had run out of food, it would have been true that the girls got enough to eat but the boys didn't. I wonder if a similar thing happened in this case.

I can't believe they didn't have giant cans of lima beans and pumpkin mix in the cafeteria kitchen.

Of course, one could have allocated the food randomly, and allowed those who wanted to give their share to others.

Or, in a "Yes we can!" Teaching Moment, one could establish a "Hunger Panel" to ration the food.

Who's in charge? Well, it's school, one of the most feminized environments in the US, so the women are in charge. Since the females are in charge, the males should be the recipients of any chivalry.

So "men first!"

YoungHegelian said...

After the girls were fed, the boys should have discussed among themselves in what order they were going to eat the girls when it came time to turn to cannibalism.

Like gentlemen.

Seriously, the forecasts didn't really have the brunt of the storm getting into the city. About 3:40 am. The nws released info that it was gonna get here. An incredible confluence o events happened, as in it got really cold and icy really quick while the ENTIRE metro area was trying to get home (work, school, damned near everybody). It got really icy and Atlanta is just plain not set up to handle that.

It took me 13 hours to travel 11 miles.

There was very little Reed or Deal could do about it. Unfortunately, they both just happened to be at an awards lunch honoring Reed, so it's pile on time. The snotty chick on CNN needs here ass slapped.

And I'm just the guy to do it.

In this scenario, where no one is going to die of hunger because it's temporary, doesn't it make sense to allocate the scarce food in such a way as to minimize or prevent conflict? The boys are the hungrier and more physically powerful ones. All the girls are looking to lose five pounds anyway, so when life gives you lemons ...

Fifty years ago giving the girls the food would have been a good and socially acceptable idea. Now it's just plain sexism. And the broads brought it on themselves. Snort, Snort. Paws ground, farts, blows nose with fingers. Goes to TV room to watch NFL reruns.

I think it's more likely that everyone got one sandwich, and the boys wanted two or three. Teenage boys consume enormous amounts of food.

Before we go rushing to the philosophical deep-end here, let's note that the comment about the sandwiches going to the girls was made by a freshman boy, so maybe some exaggeration? Plus the girls and the boys were in separate buildings. Who knows -- maybe there was no plan to not feed the boys, just the people handing out the sandwiches not thinking ahead to save some for the boys in the other building.

Heartless Aztec said...

My grandmothers on both sides would be grave spinnin' to know I had taken the sandwich from a lady's mouth. And at the private prep school I went to in the deep South in the late 60's that would have been the call. The girls in the Ladies Building would have been fed first. At the deep South inner city school I just retired from the distinction of Lady is an unheard of and indeterminate term. No such thing would ever need happen.

Renee said...

They couldn't figure out they didn't have enough sandwiches, and cut them in portions to ensure that everyone had something?

With four kids I find myself always figuring out the factions I have to equally cut something up to ensure everyone gets the same amount. Sometimes I get lazy and just cut up six hot dogs into quarters and give everyone six pieces, instead of just realizing I could just cut two in half and served a hot dog and a half.

Chivalry by men towards women is a two-way pact. Feminists forced that pact to be broken, as they said they had to be allowed to compete on equal footing with men.

So women, lets see you compete with the men for scare food resources on an equal footing, and find out how equal the sexes really are.

There is are reason throughout history women looked to men for protection, and societies developed rules and roles to prevent anarchy.

Those lessons get lost during periods of abundance, but they don't stop being necessary.

The only sensible rule for distributing scarce resources is "to each according to his need." Sandwiches for the skinny kids, none for the overweight who have plenty of stored body fat. That has two additional virtues:
(1) It rewards fitness.
(2) It introduces the children to the immutable laws of online dating and club doormen: no fatties.

The Georgia Governor and Atlanta Mayor come off looking extremely bad in this. Totally unprepared for something that was very well forecast.

In Reed's defense, he has remained sane thus far and has not yet declared us a chocolate city.

The forecasting error alluded to by another commenter was that the swath of the storm came a bit farther north than predicted. My county was supposed to get less than an inch accumulation but we ended up with about 4.

There's quite a bit of difference in driving conditions between those two scenarios. I think this is what led to one of the worst foul ups which was the failure to close schools for the day and then not calling the early dismissal soon enough.

Still, there's no excuse for the inability of our DOT to salt roads. I assume it's a budget issue since these events are rare enough they just don't want to invest in a larger fleet of trucks.

I also can't understand why they don't cut off access of the interstates to the semis. The traffic still would have been bad but at least there wouldn't be dozens of impassable sections of interstate highway from trucks jackknifed across lanes.

City folk are truly lost without modern conveniences. They would literally not last a day without a catering service. "Street smarts" are only relevant when there is a street to cross.

That said, the "women and children first" directive has an evolutionary basis. However, with a mass rejection of evolutionary principles, this directive, and other civilization building directives, should be reconsidered to favor survival of the fittest.

Men, women, and children in that order.

I grew up in the Chicago area and now live in the south suburbs of Atlanta.

We had freezing rain followed by 2-3 inches of snow - which is nothing in Chicago, but serious stuff here in the Atlanta area.

The BIG problem is not the forecasts, but the overly dramatic warnings "Winter Storm Shamu" with a logo and theme music. People start ignoring the warnings after a while.

Local schools were criticized for a two-day weather closing a few weeks ago. This time they waited to make the call until it was too late and are getting hammered for it.

You can't win.

Regarding the sandwiches, it may have been an attempt by teachers to enforce chivalry (this is the South, although a lot of the old ways are fading quickly.)

It also could have been a foul up....I understand that the schools were pretty stringent in keeping boys and girls segregated for the night in different areas. Perhaps the girls were in the cafeteria and someone mistakenly thought the boys had been fed already and just stared distributing all of the remaining food to the girls.

I feel like the professor and some commenters are reading this as saying the fight was about the sandwiches. I don't think that's (necessarily) the case, I think the kid was just listing problems that occurred, and those were two separate ones.

The writing is unclear, but most reporters suck at what they do.

And yes, as usual, female opposition to sexism ends abruptly in every case (and there are many) when it benefits them.

I wonder if they would have had more food per head on hand if it weren't for Michelle Obama's severely reduced standard school lunches?

If they keep a standard stockage, say, 2 or 3-days supply on hand, immediately after delivery, replenished with every delivery and were complying with the program, it's a near certainty.

Jason said...

MadisonMan said...

What I'm not sure of: Why didn't parents keep their kids home from school? That's not something I'd do, here in Madison, but we live three blocks from the High School, and it would be tough weather indeed that prevented that 3-block walk from being made. (And it's partly why I'm annoyed, still, that Madison schools closed on Tuesday. Why? Because some kids would be cold? Well, why are we basing decisions on the least prepared people? Isn't that disincentivizing them to be better prepared next time?)

But there appears to have been zero coordination between State, City and Schools on getting people home safely. Because, apparently, the Gov and the Mayor were too busy patting each other on the back at an awards luncheon.

I lived in WI for 22 years, then Southern Cal for 21, the last ten in Atlanta.

In Milwaukee, this might have meant a 20 minute delay, but in Atlanta, they have no idea what that white stuff is, let alone how to drive in it. On top of that, the idiots let out all the schools at the same time all the businesses told their employees to go home - instant gridlock. They finally got to people here today that had been in their cars for 24 hours going nowhere - it was like deja vu with the 405 in LA.

In SoCal, the same kind of breakdown of civilized society occurs when the weatherman predicts a 5% chance of drizzle, whether it happens or not. This is is why they have made weather totally illegal there. Generally, each TV station records one forecast a year (sunny, clear, temp just right, 2% chance of precip, to be safe) and runs it for the next 365 days.

North Atlanta is a public High School that was recently moved into a modern and luxurious set of remodeled buildings on a former 56 acre IBM campus at a cost of $147,000,000. It is now located on a 4 lane access hwy (US41) running alongside I-75 between two exit/entrance ramps only a couple of miles apart ( being at W. Paces Ferry and Mt Paran Roads.)It is a collector school for an area that was once served by 3 High Schools. So buses and cars deliver all of the 1600 students.

The neighborhoods are upper middle class to wealthy and super wealthy.

If any one could get service by the Mayor and the Governor this group could since 70% of the big donors to their campaigns live in this district.

What happened to Atlanta was an expectation built up over years that the storm would not be serious or that the folks could adjust. Its been 36 years since a clipper storm has hit here so fast at midday and stopped all traffic within 2 hours instead of the next morning. Only people over 50 remember dealing with the last one.

If you are a female, in first class, you wouldn't have died on the Titanic. Indeed, most of the survivors were female.

Today, I would hope the survivors of such an equivalent disaster, we're young children and women. Alas, I suspect that would not be the case. Even those women who demand 'equality'; "just get in the fucking lifeboat, woman! Boy, suck it up, be a man."

Alexander said...

Actually, in a Titanic-esque situation the way to save the most lives is first come - first on the boat. It avoids the dithering caused by women and children exchanging tearful goodbyes to the men in their lives who are about to die, and it prevents the herd effect of *not* getting on the boat because things might be alright and you can always get on the *next* lifeboat. Many of the Titanic lifeboats were not at capacity, and both of these factors played a role there.

The Birkenhead Drill only works when you have a large, disciplined force of armed soldiers to enforce it: suffice it to say your average cruise ship or merchant marine vessel is not quite up to the task.

Whether it's sandwiches or a sinking ship, it is not practical to save the women first: it is both inefficient and you are better off pacifying those more willing and capable to react violently - no sense in giving the women a sandwich in a starving group if she can't defend herself long enough to eat it. Letting women go first was the result of an enormous amount of social conditioning backed by force to insure a result that would not have ever happened otherwise. Women, you want to burn that down - by all means.

Depending on your age and what you put in and how much when, you surely are entitled to something. Now, as to what you're getting now as an entitlement for the rest of your life, that is a whole different question. That would apply even more to generation up (and in some cases two).

When you say "earned," what do you mean?Specify era, time, when, how, why and also the math of it.

Also, may I just ask: Are some of you in some cases looking for your kids to be able to avoid having to take care of their elders, as so many of you and at least one generation, if not two, before you did?

Talk about bad culture, and sloppy, self-serving thinking and self-justification.
