"Come on, people. If you're going to be a drug addict, be a heroin addict. It has a proven reputation."

Things overheard at Meadhouse this morning.

The newspaper article under discussion was: "Heroin deaths rise in Dane County, drug's toll increasing."

Heroin Addiction is a Cliche that is Catnip to the Hipster.

A True Addict Chooses Meth for Availability, Inexpensiveness and the Ability to Get Things Done. I have Scrubbed Those Walls Scrubbed Those Floors Scrubbed Until the Sponge Bled Wait That is My Blood I Have Torn Loose a Fingernail But Still I Scrub All Surfaces Are Unclean They Must Be Clean I Must Clean Them I Will Clean Them Woops a Tooth Fell Out.

If you want to go all out just go with Krokodil. Its cheap, has a great high, and you could get a job on the Walking Dead as a zombie without needing makeup.

Plus you off yourself relatively quickly.

To paraphrase Keith Richards - "Compared to cigarettes, heroin is silly." He should know. As an aside, walk into any methadone clinic. they're all in there trying to give up the Horse but not a one of em' is giving up their Marlboros or Kools.

This heroin suggestion is intelligent.

The drug rehabilitation on probated sentences experience addict recoveries of 60% from heroin, and 40% from cocaine, but zero % from meth.

Ah, another Sunday and the Althouse commentariat has found an uninfected vein between their toes to shoot a pinch of "Madison Blonde Lightning."....

Here we are at the end of the line, Paese dei Balocchi.
Everyone must disembark.
Please complete your toe tags, and hand them to the porter.
Tweekers will exit on the left, and junkies on the right.
Are there any questions?

The war on drugs has been very expensive with little to show. We could probably downgrade the use and distribution of many of the less dangerous drugs from felonies to misdemeanors without much harm. Legalizing these drugs completely would remove a hook which society can use to control the most dangerous aspects of drug addiction.

The main reason people overdose on heroin is that it is illegal and they have no idea how pure a drug they just bought. Make it legal and you cure the overdose problem, excpet for those that want to off themselves.

You are totally wrong about "overdoses." You should read the The Consumers Union Report on licit & illicit drugs (1972) Specifically Chapter 12: The "heroin overdose" mystery. Google and go educate yourself..

I was given Demerol for a hospital procedure. It was a mildly pleasant high, but I've had better. What was really intense and dramatic was the depression I felt when the drug wore off. It was really intense. Darkness at noon. I could understand what Sylvia Plath was all about.......I don't think heroin addicts are committed to getting high. They just want to avoid the low........

Betamax,
I just wanted to let you know, that while I've enjoyed your bitterly sardonic humor for quite some time, You are today at the top of your game.
I would like to nominate for the position of "Althouse Blog Poet Laureate.

Yes let's make it legal and have it mandated under ObamaCare.

I read it and they conclude
"If the Syndrome X deaths are due to quinine or to any other adulterant or contaminant in the bag, the responsibility clearly rests with the American heroin black market for selling unsafe mixes. If the cause of these deaths is the shooting of heroin while drunk on alcohol or barbiturates, the black-market distribution system remains at least indirectly responsible, for it is largely the high cost of black-market heroin that makes heroin users turn to alcohol and barbiturates on occasion--- and thus, perhaps, to risk death from Syndrome X."

So, what I said stands, make it legal and you stop these deaths.

Yes, I undoubtedly mis-read you. My point is that those who think heroin "overdoses" are the result of getting too "pure" of a strain of the product are wrong, and the report backs that up.
