The internet is less about cuteness than it used to be.

When's the last time anybody prodded anybody to look at cuteoverload.com or I Can Has Cheezburger?

In the business of trendspotting, it's hard to notice what we're not doing. Am I the first to notice the end of cuteness?

Here. Test yourself: Are you charmed to know that Gary Matthews, a 48-year-old "retired technology worker," "thinks he is a dog," and "wears a dog collar, eats dog food from a bowl — his favorite is Pedigree – and loves milk bones and dog cookies"?

Or do you think: Why are ABC and National Geographic giving air to mental disorders/lame entertainers? Is it to distract us from Obama's lies? And what's with "retiring" at age 48? Is that part of the economic downward spiral?

Althouse has spotted the end of the cuteness trend.

Gary Matthews can do anything he wants as long as he doesn't try to hump my leg or lick himself in public.

What does that guy have to do with cute? Non sequitur.

Strange, yes. Funny, maybe. Cute, no.

BTW, the basis the judge used to deny the name-change to Boomer was a ridiculous pretext: might confuse 911 operator.

Next they'll say he can't marry another dog.

The cute animal video decline is real and it is the result of climate change.
There is no denying weather influences animal behavior. We see it in migration, hibernation and pissing on the rug then crawling under the bed during electrical storms.
As temperatures increase and extreme weather events become more common, animals will naturally do fewer and fewer cute things.
Perhaps they understand that it is our fault and they are angry. Or perhaps they they're just not in the cufking mood right now. We have only ourselves to blame...and the Koch brothers.

The Near-Daily Postings of Cutesy-Wootsy Dogs with Waggly Tails and Big Dark Moony Eyes Seems to Negate the End of Cuteness Premise.

The End of Cuteness Would Be Heralded By an Althouse Cafe Photo Showing a Dog Taking a Dump. In Unflattering Light.

So long as he isn't harming anyone, or, bothering anyone. Bothering as in intruding, confronting, harassing. He is free to live as he chooses. He is , however, gone around the bend. Geez.
The "cute" thing, meh, it's old, established. It isn't new and different any longer.

You don't "prod" people to go to cuteoverload or the Cheezburger sites, because everyone who likes them is already going there.

Certainly I do. I check in every couple of days to see what Maru and Hana are getting up to, what schnozzles people have posted on cuteoverload for the month of Nosevember, whether there's a new Simon's Cat short, &c. Though honestly I spend more time at Cheezburger looking at Failbook than at cats, and more time looking at damnyouautocorrect than either.

Retired? At 48? Hmm...

I don't know whether cuteness is at an end or not, but I recently saw some gameplay videos from the newest Pokémon game, wherein there is apparently an entire minigame where you do nothing but pet your pokemon and feed it treats so it will love you.

I don't play videogames (at all), so perhaps I just don't have the appropriate frame of reference, but it is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen.

He's not retired, he's collecting a disability check because of his mental illness schtick. A nation of Klingers.

The trend continues. It's just that you don't go to the cuteness; the cuteness comes to you on social media. It becomes part of the background noise.

Smilin' Jack said...

In fact, the trend continues. (Show your proof in the comments.)

Let's see how long it takes for the next cute dog pic to appear on this blog.

If you include email as part of the internet, then the "Why Cats and Dogs Hate Halloween" email I got with numerous pictures of critters dressed up in costumes would settle the issue. A pug dressed up as Yoda? Too cute it is.

I heard about a man who died as a result of Mr. Matthews' disorder. He was sitting in the middle of the street licking himself and a truck ran over him.

As Chief Mojo said: "comes to me now by way of social media" - which includes URLs for cute videos not featuring relatives. But still I see a sort of competition growing among my relations for cutest video. I think if AA had a reader competition for cutest dog video (through Dropbox or something) the results would be surprising.

I check Cute Overload every other day or so, or if I'm in a bad mood and need a reason to smile. Sorry, haters. There are some seriously cute animals out there, although few reach the level of cuteness of my two beagles.

Nat Geo has become yet another cranky, smug house organ for the climate change crowd.

Sam L. said...

Gary Matthews: I pity da fool.

Nat Geo: They are getting weird, for a fact.

Also, TigerCubCam at the National Zoo.

I voted "true," but I'm note sure if the proportion of cute is smaller or the non-cute internet has gotten so huge that Althouse doesn't notice the cute portion anymore. If you aren't into cute you never run across it. If you are into something that is cute or related to cute (animals, crafts, kids) you'll find all of the cute you could ever want. My wife teaches preschool and quilts. Lot of cute comes in on her Facebook newsfeed.

Lauer, Roker to have prostate exams live on TODAY.

Bob Boyd said...

@Hagar
TODAY will have to let a female host do something equally vile and degrading or they'll be accused of having a glass floor.

'Bout time we cranks got our own answer.

Maybe the female host could have an attempted prostate exam.

@ Strelnikov

Hey, why not? She'll be paying for one under ObamaCare anyway!

I see cute cat pictures on Facebook all the time.

Sounds more like a change in the observer or the observer's sample group.

Sigivald beat me to it, but Cats! Ann, Cats! Maybe cuteness in people is shifting, but no one seems to be getting enough of Cats! one example, try to keep from smiling. it's so CUTE!

In N Y City and some other big union towns, 20 years qualifies a fire or police person for full ree-tirement.

Been that way long time.

kids dressed as football coaches for Halloween went viral. Does that count?
