“I think the city has to recognize (Chinese New Year),” said [Assembly Speaker Sheldon] Silver, a Democrat whose district includes Chinatown in lower Manhattan. “We don’t want to take away from the learning days, but we have to adjust the calendar appropriately to include all of the major populations that we have.”All the major populations... what about the minor populations?
[City Councilman Daniel Dromm] introduced a resolution in July to close school on the holy day of Diwali, a festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains.Where will it all end?
A spokesman for Lhota said he’d consider adding other holidays. De Blasio has said he supports adding the Chinese New Year, but his campaign wouldn’t comment on Diwali.
Imagine putting education first.

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks
Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all
School's out forever
School's out for summer
School's out with fever
School's out completely
Where would you like it start, what holidays should the list be limited to?
Given current academic scheduling, Thanksgiving makes zero sense for a 4 day weekend.
If we are going to put academics first, then let's do it.
They ought to give every student 3 (or some other agreed upon number) of PTO days (similar to the workforce) where you can spend them on the holiday/reason of your choice. Closing the entire school is ridiculous.
Nations at minimum serve as administrative districts. At most they server as logical partitions between people of different dispositions. With unqualified progress, a dysfunctional convergence seems to be inevitable.
Hoist up that diversity flag, Bill, and keep the hammer and sickle folded up at home.
Send out the bat signal to all the recently arrived, the poor, the illegals, the folks living in tenements. Let 'em know that there's space on the calendar and on the gravy train for 'em. Shower them with your rhetoric and have lots of PR meetings.
Then go soothe the unions and the 'middle-class' who own all the jobs and run the machine and tell them how you're gonna soak Wall Street and work for them to go back to paradise.
Then go visit with the gentry liberals, the Upper West Siders, the big Wall Street Dems, the university cartels and talk some more about taxes, diversity, fair share, middle class and all that.
Hose everyone else like Barry and have the gall to ask them to work with you.
Then let crime go downhill, Move some money and patronage chutes and spigots around and blame everybody else.
Or just propose to add two Muslim holidays to the calendar.
It's pandering season.
Or you just add an extra school day in the Summer and/or Fall for every new Holiday that you recognize throughout the year, and students shouldn't actually miss out on any instruction.

The more days off, the merrier. The kids' brains are already blank and don't need to be washed. Let them have everyday off. Most important, pay the teachers double, that's the only thing important to them and the politicians they support. Teaching the kids anything is a side show, an excuse to bilk taxpayers. Let's pay the blackmailers and keep the kids home.
Why not have a few scheduled school holdays (small h)? One in early spring, one in winter, one in late autumn? Keep religion out of any of them. Why should any one religious belief trump any other? Pretty soon any old religion will be demanding their Holy days be recognized....oh wait.
Also,
Year round school might be considered, then a short summer holiday could be scheduled too.
There were some guys in the Army who suddenly remembered they were Jews when they heard Jews got off duty for the Jewish holy days.

Yeah, she's right. Who cares if kids go to school on Christmas and the parents complain. Maybe His Majesty could executive order that all holidays be celebrated on Saturdays or Sundays. Problem solved.
Oh and Inga, why should any one language trump any other?
How about this:
We schedule so many holidays to honor every imaginable special interest group that school will just be cancelled entirely. The children will have learned the most important lesson they need to know to live in our post modern society.
In the end government will give them everything they need to survive, and isn't that what really matters?

Great. New York is going back the Beame-Koch-Dinkins-era bad old days.
Let's be smart this time. Close the airports, blow the bridges, and blockade the island. Make the NYawkers live with the results of their vote. No one gets out.
Screw it.
Fucking New York City needs to go on crazy pills in a real big way.
That whole city is beginning to make the state of California look like bastion of sanity and restraint. They may as well just jump straight to the mythical Manhattan Commune, and be done with it.
Christian parents could do the same thing Jewish parents do, if they want their child home on one of the high holy days. Keep them home for that day.
A great message to the tired, the poor, the huddled masses... we can't educate your kids but we can give them a day off.
The best solution would be one from the workplace: allow each student or teacher a set amount of "personal days" to be used at their discretion, with the understanding that any religious obligation that would require an absence is taken from that account.
So if you need to observe a holiday called "Birth of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" - no worries, just use one of your generic personal days.
But its probably too pragmatic of an idea to be very popular in a school system.
They ought to give every student 3 (or some other agreed upon number) of PTO days (similar to the workforce) where you can spend them on the holiday/reason of your choice. Closing the entire school is ridiculous.

Ahhhh, that will show me not to read the existing posts....so much easier to say: "What Amy said..."
Imagine putting education first.
That would mean ignoring the whiners who elect people.
Ignoring whiners is a great lesson, unless you're a politician who relies upon them.
"Imagine putting education first."
Over politics?
Dreamer.
In most places, the school year averages about 180 days. It doesn't really matter if we reduce summer vacation a day or two and distribute those days off elsewhere.
Imagine putting education first.
Like that would ever happen!
The last question is easy.
It will end with either dhimmitude or expulsion. We've systematically destroyed all more reasonable alternatives.
Enough special group holidays, and w can get rid of summer vacation entirely. Imagine that - a positive educational outcome from all the diversity pandering.
The school schedule and calendar are based on two things:
1) Free babysitting
2) sports seasons
I would very much enjoy hearing Inga explaining to the teachers union and all of the other school administration employees that they have to work on Christmas because "why should one religious belief trump any other." LOL
Oh, please. Everyone knows that indoctrination (especially about "diversity") trumps education, every time.
So? As public schools sink under the weight of all the interest groups who want influence, each added weight is yet another argument for vouchers.
