I read somewhere that it was a butt-dial by the killer.

No, it was the victim's phone that was dialed. Her friend received the message.

Good idea to dial a friend as a way to record an encounter when you sense danger. That's a way to preserve the recording in case your attacker would take/destroy your recording device.

Now here is a case that begs for bringing back the electric chair. After all the appeals are exhausted the State could make him a generous offer of giving him a bottle of good whiskey and a cyanide pill. Cleaner and neater.

For some reason, looking at their pictures (especially him), I couldn't help but think of the pictures of that couple that got caught by 25 cops on bikes in a park having sex.

What if an NSA snoop heard the murder instead of a friend's voice mail recorded the murder?

The murderer was not charged for lack of evidence.

Google Voice lets me listen to a voicemail as it's being recorded. I would think that the NSA has technology that allows them to do the same thing.
