At the Wet Lettuce Café...

Untitled

... because Lem wanted a café and because I think some of you might need a break from all the legalistic argle-bargle. And it was Lem who asked "Is Argle-Bargle another way of saying bullshit?" And the answer is most definitely yes, and as you know, I'm immensely interested in the concept of paraphrasing. In other words, I want to be the Professor of Paraphrase. And by the way, did you know that the song "Fly Me To the Moon," was originally titled "In Other Words"? And that Frank Sinatra sings the line "In other words, darling, kiss me" in these other words: "In other words, baby, kiss me"? Why does "darling" seem so old fashioned? Does anyone use the endearment "darling" anymore (other than sarcastically, as in "yes, darling")?

Okay, you get the message: Talk about random stuff. Be amusing and delightful. Or something.

Food Network's Giada at Home recipe that is truly awesome:

Avocado Hummus with Crispy Pita Chips

Recipe courtesy Giada De Laurentiis
Show: Giada at HomeEpisode:

Ingredients
Pita Chips:
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon chili or dried chipotle powder
Zest of 2 large limes, optional
2 whole wheat or plain pita breads, split in half horizontally
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Hummus:
One 15-ounce can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
1 large or 2 small avocadoes, seeded, peeled and coarsely chopped
1/2 packed cup arugula
1/3 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 clove garlic, smashed
1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus extra for seasoning
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus extra for seasoning
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Directions
For the pita chips: Place an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F.

In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, chili powder and lime zest if using. Brush the mixture on both sides of the bread halves using a pastry brush. Sprinkle the breads with the salt and pepper. Cut each bread half into 8 wedges and place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until crisp and golden, 15 to 18 minutes.

For the hummus: Combine the beans, avocado, arugula, parsley, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until the mixture is coarsely chopped. Gradually add the olive oil until the mixture is creamy. Season with salt and pepper.

Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl and serve the pita chips alongside.

I do say darling, IRL, as I have all of my life.

Now that the issue has been brought to my attention, however, I will surely advise my son, 13, never to do so.

I enjoy watching Giada. But the truth is that her recipes too often are remarkable for how little flavor they deliver given how many different ingredients they require. (And I say this as someone who is in no way intimidated by many ingredients.)

Also, I think one of her weakest points is dealing with beans.

I wouldn't make her recipe for hummus (which I did, once) again, on a bet, if that's what I was aiming for.

Fanny, is a p***y?! Oh those strange British!

As I said, her husband's name is Brunhilde.

They met outside Tobruk.

PS No surprise Ms Davis' show was for the media, apparently.

PPS On the day, Paula Deen was dropped by Wally world and Home Depot, her books sales reported to be soaring.

Carbonite, anyone?

Darling was very popular form of address among 60's London louche aristocrats and rock stars. It was dated for Sinatra but hip for Keith Richards and Marianne Faithful who stil use it in interviews. Also the Julie Christie movie. No coffee this morning so many autocorrect problems sorry for deleted comments

My soul weeps looking in that prison you call a "pot" at all my sisters crowded in there. They should be in the forest living under the trees, with the bees, not waiting for you to eat them. This disgusts me. I advocate a life where, if you must eat, you wait for the food to fall naturally from trees--and then you eat it, but only after consigning the souls of the fallen to Gaea...
