I remember watching American Idol a lot the first few seasons. Kelly Clarkson I called as the winner when they showed her early on. I actually voted a lot during that first season too.
I think Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson would be good because they show different paths of post-Idol success. A great 3rd judge would be a producer who is very successful very recently. Someone who isn't looking to get new exposure, someone who is presently looking for a new star, and is willing to be honest about it. That's where Simon was good, when Idol started. He was harsh, but we knew he was right. He was in it for a personal investment. Something on the line.
It wasn't drama for drama's sake, it was wanting to find someone who really could make it big. It wasn't about being PC so that Idol could have the right mix of contestants for their heartwarming story lines.
They need someone on the judges panel with the same fire as the contestants are bringing. Ever since the earlier seasons, that has been lacking.

Rick Rubin? Worked with a lot of different styles. Great ear.
You need a country artist and would be happy to replace Urban with someone like John Rich but he was already on Nashville Star so he might be overexposed.

I have never seen an episode.
I discovered Phillip Phillips when I heard him on the radio. What an amazing voice he has! He's brilliant.
What do the producers have against vagina love?
It won't revive my interest.
Well Adam Lambert can't just sit there, oh the drama!
I had a suspicion that Kelly Clarkson would have a role again.
She's very likable. Knows her stuff. I don't know what she would get out of it, except giving back a bit to why she's a star.

Kelly Clarkson is fabulous
Kelly has done Duets and The Voice, so she has experience at the table, not just stage.
Neither Adam nor Clay interest me in the least. An all former contestant judges table doesn't sound like a good idea.
AI needs to put a nail in theme of the week. Or at least curtail the practice. Let me hear what the singer is good at singing.
"American Idol has nailed down its first auto tune judge: Jennifer Hudson."
fixed

Epic beard.

That is a very good analysis right there.
I never understood the appeal of American Idol. It's just another frickin' talent show, right?
But apparently the show is actually about the conflict between the people on stage and the judges.
"I want this so bad."
"No, you can't have it."
That is the very basis of drama. Nice one, Paddy, now I get it.
AI lacks honesty, the one good thing Simon Cowell brought to the judges' table.
Plus, the overall theme is now time-worn.
As along as Hudson gives cogent, honest feedback to singers and isn't a tool of the Producers, she'll do okay.
But I don't know how well she thinks on her feet, which is kinda important during the live shows.
Rick Rubin? Worked with a lot of different styles. Great ear.
Would Rubin tarnish his legacy to work on AI? Doubt it.
I'd like to pitch American Songwriter. Maybe Bob Dylan could be a judge.
Jennifer Hudson, Tommy Mottola, Keith Urban and Kelly Clarkson would be my picks.

Urban is relatively useless. How about a comedian-type to reign in the fawning with some snark about hairstyles, dress, etc.?
Why would you want a comedian? I would go with Harry Connick Jr. but he already said he couldn't do it.
You know who might be great? Emlio Estefan.

So a revised group. Hudson, Clarkson, Emlio Estefan and Harry Connick Jr.
