"I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport."

"But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation."

Jason Collins has strong political connections. Bill Clinton said: “I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea’s classmate and friend at Stanford."

And Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) was Collins's roommate at Stanford: "For as long as I’ve known Jason Collins he has been defined by three things: his passion for the sport he loves, his unwavering integrity, and the biggest heart you will ever find. Without question or hesitation, he gives everything he’s got to those of us lucky enough to be in his life. I’m proud to stand with him today and proud to call him a friend."

Collins has been in the NBA for 12 years and will be a free agent at the end of the season. Does he face abuse within sports? He says he's led a "double life has kept me from getting close to any of my teammates." There's always politics. The man has some powerful friends there.

No, the standard that the speech of one person is owned by the collective is YOUR standard. I don't say anything because it is their individual speech, not mine.

YOUR standard is the one you expect others to adhere to and condemn them for failing to do so, all the while, not holding yourself to it. YOU are the hypocrite.

I am not (nor is anyone else) a hypocrite for not living up to YOUR standard. Do you know what hypocrisy is?

Almost 600 comments, on a thread originally about some nobody basketball player getting the media spotlight for coming out.

You can support SSM and not think Collins is a hero.

You can think what he is doing is a positive thing and not think he is brave.

You can wish him well and not think he is courageous.

You can do all these things, unless you want the approval of the left, because then you are a bigot because shut up.

Enjoy the rest of the ritard thread hijacking masturbation fest.

Enjoy more of the pathetic charity case bug eyed bitch lecturing people here about hypocrisy.

Enjoy seeing the left for what they really are.

Why does the reference to gentleness or reason have to involve me? It doesn't. Speak about something that strikes you gently or appeals to your sense of reason that has nothing to do with me. See if I respond then. It's called relating to others. Don't fear it.

Well, that's interesting and can prompt a good discussion. Was it in Wyoming that you grew up? I don't have much experience with horses but appreciate the wild settings in which they are kept for riding and other purposes.

I had a girlfriend one day who told me that what's nice about horses is the sense of freedom they give us, much like the way a guy might look at a motorcycle.

Plus, they are magnificent creatures who require our care. Powerful and noble. Much more so than a machine.

Do you still get a chance to ride horses? I know someone who keeps them and I admire that.

Well, I'm very glad that you got to have that experience.

My own father is a very decent man but perhaps not as outdoorsy as the experience of "manly grace" might benefit from. We were in the scouts together, good memories, but I think as a suburbanite I got more out of it than he did as a native city-dweller.

What I also got out of growing up with him was the love he had for his mother, a very graceful and kind woman. Often dropping by with home-made meals and gifts for people who wouldn't have known otherwise. My own mother was more passionate, definitely not as graceful! But we have a good relationship.

Anyway, I recently found out that my grandmother's mom passed away when she was 4. This must have been quite an experience and left her with her love of family, and the ensuing desire later in life to have the 10 kids she ended up having.

Responsibility was a big part of my dad's character. And loyalty for that family, no matter how much of a pain in the ass they'd inevitably get to be, as all families can become.

Grandpa was a very eclectic eccentric. My grandmother was very attracted to his strong, silly and endlessly interested personality. The number of things he did in life were many. Probably too many to get into in this chapter...

You cannot equate my behavior or Ritmo's to theirs. They are vile and indecent and if you cannot see that then you hav a major problem.

Basic human decency calls for decent humans to address such behavior, Ritmo did not engage in such behavior and commenters here rarely reign in these absolutely disgusting vile pigs.

4/30/13, 1:25 AM

Are you claiming YOUR behavior meets your "basic human decency" standard? Do you really think you have made a persuasive argument? Calling me "psycho" and to go fuck myself is supposed to persuade me to agree with you.

Unbelievable.

Did not Ritmo repeatedly attack Pallidian for being gay and (allegedly) poor? And you called him a "good guy"? I have no interest in your moral compass as it is seriously defective.

Icepick said...

"Hateful production choices"! I'd love to have an example of that, but I'm guessing "We Built This City" and "The Final Countdown" may both qualify.

Incidentally, I managed to hear both "The Final Countdown" and "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" on the radio today driving around town. I've actually heard "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" performed by Rupert Holmes two days in a row, now. I really need to start taking my iPod with me when I leave the house....

Yup, he did. He also attacked me for being temporarily homeless, fat, a bad artist, naive, autism-spectrum.

The only one I won't cop to is "bad artist".

Jesus. Definitely, bring your iPod.

"The Final Countdown" is a far worse song than anything Rupert Holmes could ever dream up, however.

Matt said...

Inga,

Ritmo's attacks were disgusting and AFTER you saw them all you proclaimed him a "good guy".

I said nothing about anyone and I was the hypocrite?

I said nothing until you attacked ME. And then, well, go back and look what you wrote to me. Your hands are far from clean.

And my question was about your supposed basic level of human decency. Do YOUR comments directed at ME meet that criteria?

Icepick said...

But "Total Eclipse of the Heart" shouldn't be on that list: Jim Steinman has his own brand of overblown EVERYTHING and should not be judged by normal standards.

Palladian said...

Those certainly qualify, but songs like "The Candy Man" and "MacArthur Park" and the execrable "Honey" are even better examples.

Eeeeek!

Ritmo's attacks were not only vile, they were also personal and relentless. (Seriously, what does someone have to do to get banned!?) And after it all, you ENDORSED him as a "good guy". You supported his comments!

Yet, those of us who say nothing about ANY of the general level of nastiness are hypocrites? Do you not understand the argument you are making?

Icepick said...

Agreed. But that is a very low bar.

And why are a bunch of straight people having a Big Str8 Snit About Teh Gays because someone called you a homeless fag, Palladian? Seriously, don't they know you can handle yourself in a comment section? Jesus "Fucking" Christ*, people, just let it go already.

You are coming in late. Inga castigated all conservatives as hypocrites for being silent to attacks on her. Meanwhile, Ritmo did his usual and Inga piled on. When I pointed out she was the hypocrite, she told me to shut up and fuck off.

It is plainly evident that Palladian has more inner strength than Inga and Ritmo have combined. I only referenced the exchange as evidence of Inga, um, lacking intellectual coherence.

Icepick said...

Matt, the question is, why continue to engage? Although I've had the "pleasure" of prolonged "debate" with Inga, there's really no point in it. Just stop it, dude, and write about your favorite crappy songs instead. It's for your own piece of mind.

Matt said...

Icepick, here is the funny thing: I'm up this late anyway! I keep check on my daughter's glucose levels at night as we prefer our children to wake up in the morning alive rather than dead. As such, while trying to get through to Inga and introduce her to the concept of logically coherence, she stated HOURS ago that she was going to be. Thus, at the very least, I kept her up past her bedtime. HUZZAH!

Matt said...

Oh, and I like "The Final Countdown" and am ok with the dopey Pina Colada song and "Afternoon Delight". I think the thing with those songs is we know that - absolutely, objectively speaking - they are terrible but we still kind of like them anyway.

One song I hate is Nilsson's "Coconut". But even that one I am fascinated by as it uses only one chord.

Palladian said...

Thanks to you, I switched from Zappa to "Midnight At The Oasis", which may indeed be the worst song ever written and performed.

Nah, I meant "piece". One has to preserve that very last bit of functional neurons, but the whole isn't really that necessary.

I didn't notice any hardcore heavy metal on Palladian's list. (Matt, go back and see Palladian's link above, if you haven't already. It's good for several laughs of the same variety one gets from watching someone else get kicked in the balls.)

Special mention should go to Accept's "Balls to the Wall" which is both awesome and awful and awesomely awful and awfully awesome! It has one of the worst videos of all time, and comes off the record that probably has the most "butch" album cover of all time. Here's a sample lyric:

Come on man, let's stand up all over the world
Let's plug a bomb in everyone's ass
If they don't keep us alive....

AND the singer's name is Udo Dirkschneider! Holy crap!

Here's a link to the video. The key question to ask about the video is, "WTF was that at 1:18?!"

If it's live action I want Phillip Seymour Hoffman to play me, but only if he does it as Truman Capote. (Hey, it's a gay themed blog post & comment section, right? Plus, I liked many of Capote's choices in hats.)

Brittle is a term that nurses and doctors use to describe a diabetic who's blood sugars vary, often from very high to very low.

No, "brittle diabetes" is the term. If you had said, "Does she have brittle diabetes." then I might have believed you.

Is that your position? That is what you meant?

I'm more concerned about her father now.

Matt, of course that is what I meant. I assumed you would know the terminology.

Good night, you're a good dad.

Matt said...

No, but you could ask "Does she have brittle diabetes?" As it happens, she does not and has never. She just has regular, run of the mill never know for sure what is going to happen diabetes.

Matt said...

Inga, one thing that bothers me when I read your writing on this site is that you sometimes have, for lack of a better term "lucid moments". It happened before the election when you said you would not vote for Obama after his race baiting video came out and with the abortion discussion. However, it seems like you very quickly return to "shrieking harpy" mode.

While this site has its share of right wing folks who comment in good faith, there is a lack of that on the other side of the aisle. There are moments when you fit that role. Unfortunately, they are few in far between.

One thing that would help would be if you didn't assume the worst from the start. As you said, from the first query I sent you your instinct was to ignore it. Why? It was a simple, pointed question that lacked a lot of the invective elsewhere. Each response you gave ignored the original question and instead attacked. Why not start from a neutral position and see where it goes?

You want to be treated decently but you are unwilling to start at a point where that can be the outcome. Perhaps if you had started from the position of "Maybe this is a good dad/person" instead of "I should ignore this person" then the ensuing exchange would be more positive.

Alas, with that said, my original question to you all those hours ago remains unanswered.

Inga said...
Matt, what Ritmo has said tonight in this thread isn't even close to the degree of nastiness that gets spewed from Jay, Meth, PMJ on a daily basis, and most of you remain silent.

The hypocrisy is amazing.

4/29/13, 11:21 PM

No, the standard that the speech of one person is owned by the collective is YOUR standard. I don't say anything because it is their individual speech, not mine.

YOUR standard is the one you expect others to adhere to and condemn them for failing to do so, all the while, not holding yourself to it. YOU are the hypocrite.

I am not (nor is anyone else) a hypocrite for not living up to YOUR standard. Do you know what hypocrisy is?

Brittle Diabetes Mellitus
Thomas Higgins, M.D.

Brittle Diabetes is a subjective term and the diagnosis often depends on the experience of the patient, family and physician involved. The most useful definition of brittle diabetes is a functional one: "the patient whose life is constantly disrupted by episodes of hyper- or hypoglycemia, whatever their cause". While these patients are rare (less than one percent diabetics), they cause a considerable burden on hospital, social, and family resources due to multiple hospital admissions.

Many early studies tried to identify possible physiological mechanisms for the brittleness but with increasing study, it has become clear that the majority of cases are due to psychological factors. Metabolic abnormalities are a rare cause of poor glycemic control.

Natural History:
Brittleness may be in the form of hyperglycemic brittleness, hypoglycemic brittleness or a combination of both. Brittle diabetics followed over a long period of time have been noted to have certain characteristics:

Most patients were consistent in whether their recurrent episodes were hyperglycemic or hypoglycemic in nature. Only occasional patients showing "mixed brittleness".
Women predominate in most studies of brittle diabetes but men frequently also are found to be brittle. In my own experience, brittleness is more common during puberty in both sexes.
There is a significant mortality rate. Among survivors, the insulin dose tends to drop over time and episodes of hyperglycemia and severe hypoglycemia become less frequent.
Diabetic complications seem to be more frequent in brittle diabetics and are most likely related to poorer metabolic control.
Cause of Brittle diabetes:
It is clear that the brittleness in most patients is related to a specific unhappy life situation; when this resolves, so does the brittleness.

Hyperglycemic brittleness is rarely related to a chronic cryptic infection.

Hypoglycemic brittleness is rarely related to diabetic gastroparesis where the stomach has a delay in emptying or hypoglycemic unawareness where the patient can not sense a low blood sugar.

Inga, if you have an issue with your usage of a dated term, bring it up with Merck. They are the ones who said it was an inappropriate term. Furthermore, many parents find the usage of it akin to calling Down's kids "retards". Sure, it used to be acceptable but people evolved.

Matt,

This Inga character pontificates about diet, diabetes, Alzheimers, Aspergers, and so on and so forth.

She is not a nutritionist, dietitian, endocrinologist, pediatrician, and so forth.

She's a ex nursing home LPN. She may have some good insights into the progression of Alzheimers. Beyond that, I'd ignore her medical advice or opinions.
