The completely inappropriate use of Michelle Obama — piped in from the White House — to announce the Best Picture Oscar.

Wow. I'm just seeing this now. How awkward. I was embarrassed to watch the clip. Jack Nicholson — the greatest actor of the modern era (or something) — comes out as if he's going to announce the award, observes that it's traditionally one presenter who does the announcement, then throws it to a White House feed where it's Michelle Obama, dressed up in her ball gown, in the company of White House toadies in tuxes. And then "Lincoln" doesn't even win, so we don't get the stunning climax of all of history that was what the producers may have thought they were setting up.

Abysmal.

IN THE COMMENTS: Drago said: "Those aren't 'toadies.' Those are the military aides assigned to the President. They have no choice but to be there when 'directed.' And those aren't 'tuxes,' those are military dress uniforms." I stand corrected. I'm sorry. I was going to watch the video again to check that detail but there was no scroll bar on the video and I could not put up with watching it in real time. Why were military personnel used as props for an entertainment industry awards show?

I caught you lying and proved it.

First of all, this is what I responded to: "Did Reagan, a former Hollywood actor, or his wife, Nancy, ever do something like this?"

Quite clearly, Reagan doing a taped appearance for the Oscars is "something like that".

Second, your argument that we can't test students from the same city and judge the results only makes sense if you conclude that we can't test students and judge the results from within the same class either.

Your link to the 4 photo montage is hardly proof that the Reagans did anything remotely similar. 3 of the 4 photos were taken in the White House with one obviously the oval office.

Having the Office of the President deliver military personnel for a moochelle kodak moment is gauche if not altogether inappropriate.

What on earth are you talking about, Ed? As a Marine myself, I kinda know those weren't dress blues, believe me. That's why I made sure to differentiate between the services from the paragraph I quoted. That Army uniform they were wearing last night has NOTHING to do with the Marine Corps, period: dress blues, Mess Dress or otherwise.

Otherwise an ultra shitty school is ignored as a comparative while a less shitty school is substituted that is better than the charter while the charter is leagues ahead of the abandoned school.

I am not sure the methods used are honest.

Gabriel said...

@garage:The populations tested that I cited were from the same city.

No one disputed that. But they are not identical populations. There are confounding variables, and so 5% difference in performance is not significant.

If students had been assigned randomly from the general population to a voucher or a public, the populations would be identical, provided they were large enough.

This isn't hard to understand, Stat 101 if that.

Also: It's not accurate to characterize my objection as "anxiety". It's more along the lines of disappointment. They're willing to cheapen themselves to give an honor to someone who's done nothing by even their professional standards to have earned it. That sort of behavior is characteristic of toadies, not professionals in an industry with intrinsic reasons for their own professional pride. I remember from reading Conrad Blacks biography on Nixon that the jews of the NY Times and other media centers had a field day when Nixon had his staff festoon non-military White House people in ornate garb so that he would have more pomp and color behind him.

"The Imperial Presidency!!"
"Who does that twisted dark goyim think he is, Louis the 14th??"
"Nixon tries making the White House Versailles!"

The biography states that Nixon, a combat veteran, with a war going on in Vietnam..just thought it slighted and demeaned the military to use them as props for ceremonial or poltical poll pimping.
But at events where he thought the military was appropiate, like greeting and meeting with visiting heads of other nations, Nixon did slather on the dress uniforms, ribbon confetti, and expensive jet flybyes to impress the foreigners and the TV audience.

In fairness to Obama, he isn't the 1st President to use "The Heroes Who Serve!!" as props for entirely non-military or foreign dignitary occasions.
Dubya Bush was bad at it...and had the further bad habit of surrounding himself with the "Heroes Who Keep Us All Perfectly Safe" when on the road discussing how great the Heroes were doing getting Iraqis to love us, how much the people in his MIdwest crowds on a campaign swing should know how he cared for the props behind him. (And imply The Heroes ! - all loved whatever Dubya was doing.

Reagan of course, had staff that worked up the 1st personalized SOTU homage to a Hero - some schmuck picked for some small feat to push the right audience emotional buttons and show how Ronnie emphasized with the common folk who did some small meaningful thing.

That cancer spread to where pols now salt their audiences with several prop military heroes or civilians with some accomplishment or some certified Victimhood the pol uses in set prepared speeches to call on them to stand up and be singled out and celebrated.

So fucking manipulative and basically done for advancing identity politics or wrapping the flag around themselves or given female voters who feeeel vs. think warm fuzzies because the President is taking time away from issues to talk about the single mother of two who is a minority and just came out as gay who organized giving Afghan girls soccer balls, thus " empowering them"

What happened to sonicfrog? If I recall, he used to be a nice, sensible, relatively non-denominational commenter. Now he's gone all Andrew Sullivan on us.

It's sad when it happens to someone you know...

Garage said Laura Bush appeared at the academy Awards? Did she actually present an award?

I'm trying to think back to that time and can only vaguely remember her appearing as a speaeker (amongst many others) of a documentary that was made by Errol Morris that was played during the Awards.

Is he referring to that or another incident.
Also, in the case of Reagan, he WAS an actor.
THis is the first time EVER that a first lady presented an award at the academy awards.

"The Friends Of Hamas" was a joke... literally! You might want to at least pay attention to more than one news source if you want to know what's going on in the world. Breitbart is not exactly reliable, as this sad tale demonstrates.

Stupid shit:

You linking to left wing Web sites doesn't illustrate you have much of a handle of "what is going on in the world"

The fact that I know that the "Friends Of Hamas" doesn't exist, and you didn't, doesn't help you here. I don't trust anything I hear in the media... Any media, right or left. Sometimes, right leaning media get a good accurate story, sometimes, the left leaning media does. This time, the left is right, and your guys stepped in it. It was stupid for Hugh Hewitt to repeat this on the air without confirmation. It was really dumb for a sitting Senator to fall for this. But, most of all, it was stupid for Breitbart to publish before getting any confirmation... oh, yeah, I forgot. They don't typically do that.

I realize you have to knock down straw men since your idiotic drivel has no semblance to reality, but a good rejoined when being demonstrated to be spectacularly wrong is to not say link to Slate or tell someone else they don't know what's going on.

If you had an ounce of decency you would shut the fuck up.

You, however, will come back with more drivel.

It's what you silly little propagandists do.

Propaganda is the spreading of false and / or misleading information to damage an opponent, which is typical of the post-modern model of "news" reporting.

Oh, and you should look up the definition of strawman.

Here is the definition of a strawman argument:

The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position.

Typically, a strawman argument has little or no relevance to the point at hand. Seeing that my point was this:

You've all become so reactionary to ANYTHING this President, his administration, or anyone associated with it, that anything they do, you react as a reflex action - you automatically leap before you look. The whole "Friends Of Hamas" fiasco at the Hagel confirmation hearings - bringing that up without even considering to get confirmation that there is any validity at all to that very serious type of accusation - made your side look absolutely ridiculous and the backlash from that stupidness probably ended up swaying the few votes Hagel needed to get confirmed.

Since I make the assertion that a faction of the Right reflexively and in an often acidic manner reacts to anything the Obamas do or any action of the administration, and since the "Friends Of Hamas" is an example of that, it clearly is not a strawman.

So, back to the Oscars. A Liberal First Lady presents and Academy Award to a liberal film maker at an industry awards show run by a predominately liberal industry, watched by a predominately liberal leaning audience... And we're supposed to be upset about that why?

Shes not the President. She's a first lady. This has no bearing on the country, except it's just one more thing for you guys to rag on about.

PS. In case you missed it. I didn't vote for her husband in either of the last elections. He was very qualified when he ran the first time, and he's done nothing much to earn my vote this time either. He's a mediocre President at best.

But don't worry, in your continued beclownment, you then said this:

Uh, except that isn't what I was referring to, at all.

When I pointed out Hagel is not yet confirmed. You responded, in strawman fashion, that Breitbart News isn't accurate or reliable.

Want to guess why you did that, little fella?

In this case, they clearly screwed up. They play too lose with facts to be trusted without extra verification. OK. Let me clarify.

...the whole "Friends Of Hamas" fiasco at the Hagel confirmation hearingss probably ended up swaying the few votes Hagel needs to get confirmed.

Semantic error. Most of the reports I've seem to indicate Hagel has the votes to squeeze by and be confirmed. If that happens, the false and sleazy story may have played a part.

When I pointed out Hagel is not yet confirmed. You responded, in strawman fashion, that Breitbart News isn't accurate or reliable.

Wow. Did you even read my response to that assertion?

Uh, on February 7, 2013 Breitbart News’ story on “Friends of Hamas” was written.

Chuck Hagel is not yet confirmed.

You gave the date of the original story, but no indication that you had any awareness that it's since been shown to be bogus, unless you want to stick to Breitbarts Ratherian assertion of "Fake, but accurate".

Oh, never mind. You're too seeped in partisan muck to comprehend anything with any clarity.

Me: The story ran Feb 7 and Hagel is not confirmed

You: reitbart News isn't accurate or reliable.

The last part is the straw man, you fucking idiot.

I never commented on the accuracy of the story, speculated on the accuracy of the story, nor is it relevant here.

I'd also add that this: The fact that I know that the "Friends Of Hamas" doesn't exist, and you didn't, doesn't help you here. is another straw man.

Is English a third language for you? I said "may" have played a part. Before the "friends of Hamas" thing was shown to be sloppy journalism / propaganda from Breitbart, the buzz was that Hagel didn't have the votes. After Breitbart and a few Republicans were shown to be fools for biting on this, Hagel is said to have enough votes. While there is no direct evidence that this event changed the outcome, the implications are there.

Aridog said...

Jesus H Christ, Moses, Vishnu, and Mohammad!!...can anyone state in simple concise cogent terms specifically WHY Hagel should be Secretary of Defense and/or Brenna should be Director-CIA?

Besides Obama's petulant demand...what specially in skill sets and experience qualifies Hagel? How does being the White House mole bypassing multiple layers of command and oversight qualify Brennan?

Would any of these liberal sponsors of these spurious candidates have backed Oliver North for D-CIA? Oh, not really?...didn't think so.

One of these days, nominating and confirming wholly unqualified, political clout and suck ass creatures, such as Hillary, persons for these critical posts in the cabinet and CIA will result in disaster.

Oh, wait....U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service officer Sean Smith, and former Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods had something to say...however they are conveniently unavailable.

PS: I am a slow learned, but after a career or two in military and federal service, I am finally beginning to understand the absolute fucking need for institutionalized bureaucracy that can wreak budgets & efficiency, but also are necessary to minimize the depredations of appointed cabinet and director level assholes....not to mention the generally know-nothing appointed SES. It truly is damned if you do, damned if you don't.

PPSS: I don't much care what Michelle Obama does, it is all comedy to me...she is the blackest person I have even seen who dances like a white guy. Now that's funny.

Because that didn't ever happen in Republican administrations.... Oh. Wait. Hello Mike Brown.

You probably want to do some research on this topic. It's been standard practice since at least John Adams.

Aridog said...

sonicfrog said...

Because that didn't ever happen in Republican administrations....

Uh, did I say it never happened in Republican administrations. No...but don't let that stop your inferences. While you're at it, think about Bush appointee Gates, a total fuck up if there ever was one...which explains why Obama retained him.

Oh. Wait. Hello Mike Brown.

That'd be the Mike Brown who allegedlydidn't send FEMA and other federal responders to New Orleans & Katrina until a week had passed, right?

Well, that was bullshit and he took the fall, qualified or not...and I know the federal response began the Saturday before the Monday landfall of Katrina...because I WAS PART OF IT....my team was there Saturday...awaiting Monday. What wasn't prepared or deployed was any state or local response...how do you think federal responders know what and where things are needed? Federal resources and assets were pre-deployed and no one from NOLA or the State was there to direct distribution or coordinate relief...unlike Mississippi and Alabama.

As I said, we pre-deployed a relief materials and personnel, and had made that a practice since Puerto Rico in the late 90's when the honchos finally figured out that pre-deployment and hunkering down was easier and less costly than trying to come in over blocked roads and wires down....to find a hovel to set up in or pitch a tent in a field, or sleep in a car.

You probably want to do some research on this topic.

Good advice...you might do that before you cite bullshit and unsupported inferences as a response....especially to someone who was actually there for the crap you cite.

By the way, I was amused by the new modern FEMA under Obama & "Big Sis" in New York and New Jersey...nothing pre-deployed, and something as basic as emergency water provisions not even ordered until a week had passed (I checked it on FedBiz in disbelief when advised of it)... so yes, appointing nincompoops is harmful.

As you were, carry on....

sonicfrog said...

You infer a lot of things I didn't say also. I didn't say anything about FEMA not responding to Katrina. I figured he did a better job under the circumstances than some gave him credit for. Yes, the state and city governments did a horrific job prepping for this disaster.

That said, he WAS a pure political appointee - a guy who didn't so much have the qualifications for the position, but someone who was a friend of the POTUS and got the job because of it.
