"It’s time for me to be mature."

Says the 89-year-old Frank Lautenberg, ceding the stage to Cory Booker.

1)I'm sure someone had to sit this prima donna down and explain this to him; and

2) Good to know there is some point at which he would admit this.

Lautenmouth was only there as a placeholder anyway.

Now they want somebody else in that place.

Maybe the Pope was an inspiration.

I'm pretty damned mature, too!

Happy Valentines Day, Althouse & Co., from an Old Dawg!

If I was any more mature, I'd be dead!

Lautenberg had retired in 2001 and only came back to "save" the seat Torricelli had to vacate do to corruption... he helped keep a democratic majority in the Senate.

I dont know... maybe the old fart wanted something and this was his way of getting it?

Lautenperks will not go willingly into that goodnight and he will also keep Cristy from appointing an R to that seat.

89 years of age is pretty late in life to start being mature.

Good. It is nice to know there is still some humanity underneath all that politician.

Since democrats are just placeholders in NJ, perhaps Jon Corzine can come back?

He should be in prison with Bernie Madoff, but so what? He's a Democrat.

I just read that. And then I got distracted by the Google doodle and the realization they had to create a scenario for every possible random animal merry-go-round match, and draw it.

And only 60 years too late.

And a Happy V-Day from me and The Blonde right back. And to all the Althousians.

Especially the Hillbillies.

And, yes, your Myrna was gorgeous. You were a lucky guy.

PS "She walks into the house and drops to the floor and starts whimpering. She’s the sweetest thing. After about a half an hour of hugging and petting, she’s had enough and she’s ready to go home."

Next time Althouse has a contest to see who can write the best erotica, enter that.

(but don't tell her who it's about)

And when Menendez resigns in disgrace Lautenberg will be back. He's like Freddy Krueger

"It's time for me to be mature. Victor Mature!" screamed a demented Lautenburg.

He followed up with a quote from Samson and Delilah (1949), directed to Nancy Pelosi: Your arms were quicksand. Your kiss was death. The name Delilah will be an everlasting curse on the lips of men.

I guess he read your post from a couple days ago, Professor?

I worry about Cory Booker. I have a theory that being in the US Senate makes you dumber every day. I do not know of any counterexample. (Can anyone offer one.) All of the smart people in the senate were smarter to begin with. There are some people who start dumb and only change slightly. For instance, they can become dumb enough to become Vice President.

I was going to call New Jersey the clown state of American Politics but Minnesota has proudly taken that label (cf: Al franken and J. Ventura)

I would venture he's a bit late on that one.

Last WWII veteran in the Senate, most likely the last one in any important government position.

What's that, his high school yearbook photo at the linked article?

Bob R: the only example I can come up with against yours is the late Sen Moynihan, who always impressed me, even when I was disagreeing with him.

Other than that--yeah, the senate is for stupids.

Even my senator, who showed promise, has fallen under the McCain/Graham stupid spell.
My other senator started stupid. No word on the progress.
