What's Happening to Hillary? Only a clod would say the clot is a plot!

Here are Senators Lindsey Graham and Dianne Feinstein, interviewed by Chris Wallace (yesterday, on "Fox News Sunday"):
WALLACE: Senator Graham, how important is it for Secretary of State Clinton to testify under oath before she leaves office about the Benghazi terror attack?...

GRAHAM: Absolutely essential that she'd testify....

WALLACE: Some of your Republican colleagues say they are prepared to hold off the confirmation of John Kerry as secretary of state, until Secretary Clinton testifies as secretary, before she leaves office.

GRAHAM: That's going to happen. I've been told by Senator Kerry he wants that approach also. He needs to hear what she says so he can make comments about, I agree with her/I don't agree with her. It makes sense to have her go first.

WALLACE: Do you agree with that, Senator Feinstein, that she needs to testify first, as an -- and have you been assured she will testify, though it has been 3 1/2 months since Benghazi and she still has never really answered questions, about Benghazi, her role before, during, after the attack? Do you have reason to believe she'll testify as secretary?

FEINSTEIN: She has said she will and I believe she will. You know, she's had a very real accident and she's recovering from it, and, she will be back. I gather, her first day, of work may well be next week. So, I think that's good news.
With all that assurance that Hillary Clinton would testify, later that day, we heard the news that Hillary Clinton had entered the hospital with a blood clot. We weren't told the site of said blood clot. Was it her brain (recently concussed)? Was it her leg (where she had a blood clot back in 1998)? The former is a big deal, the latter, not so much. Why not specify the site, since it make such a big difference, medically? Oh, but we're told we must not display any skepticism, any hint of suspicion that the SOS is trying to avoid having to testify about Benghazi. The woman is ill. Only a clod would say a clot was a plot.

Here's medical expert Kent Sepkowitz:
Unlike the relatively bland “concussion after fainting” pronouncement from earlier this month, this terse press release from her spokesman smells a little fishy. First it is odd that we are not told where the clot is—usually the clot, referred to as thrombophlebitis, occurs in the leg, a condition suffered by former president Richard Nixon after leaving the White House.
Maybe you can remember — if not, guess! — how sensitive we were to Nixon's phlebitis, which conveniently flared up in the midst of Watergate. Ha! That bastard thinks he can get our sympathy. Pathetic! (That's what I said at the time.)
The clot [in the leg] can be uncomfortable but is only dangerous and even life threatening if it breaks free and travels downstream into the lung—a pulmonary embolus, in medical parlance.... Given that Clinton already has had this condition and those who have had one episode have a predilection to recurrence, the lack of a reminder of the 1998 clot from her press people seems a strange oversight.

Another problem with the “concussion then clot” story is this—the concussion, if indeed it came after a faint, should not directly predispose Clinton to a clot....

Alternatively, is it possible that the clot in question is one in the lining of the brain that can form after head trauma.... But anticoagulation is never given to persons with clots around the brain. They are either watched without intervention or surgically evacuated. So this possible explanation is out.

We are left with a story that is not easy to connect up with sparse information from the inside crowd, who could easily deflate speculation with two or three more measly facts. The National Enquirer has already declared Clinton to be suffering from a brain tumor, linking her observed weight gain, possibly from treatment for the putative cancer, and not-exactly-explained need to leave Obama’s Cabinet to the grim diagnosis. Such a story no longer seems to me as implausible as it did after the faint and concussion reports.
The suppression of informationthe site of the clot — suggests 2 radically different theories: 1. fakery/exaggeration to evade testimony, or 2. something horribly serious. I read Sepkowitz to exclude the middle ground.

UPDATE: Email from CNN says: "Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a blood clot between her brain and skull behind her right ear, her doctors said." This seems to be the option that Sepkowitz excluded because "anticoagulation is never given to persons with clots around the brain." If that's correct, then something is still, to use Sepkowitz's word, fishy.

UPDATE 2: Here's the Washington Post, on January 1st, noting the site of the clot and saying "The conventional treatment is an anticoagulant drug for at least six months." So that directly contradictions Sepkowitz's statement that "anticoagulation is never given to persons with clots around the brain."

AND: I've got a bit more to say here

I won't venture a guess as to which of the two possibilities are true.

If (remember that I said if) she's faking to avoid testimony, then I would assume that the facts about the Benghazi incident are far more damaging to the Obama admin than previously speculated.

Of course she'll never testify.

Curioser and curioser

A russian intelligence site
http://www.rg.ru/org/pravitelstvo/minoboroni/gru/

is reporting that Hilary was injured in a plane crash in Iran that also killed Navy SEAL Job W Price.

The military claims that Price died of gunshot wounds to the head and is an apparent suicide.

The link above takes you to a site in cyrillic. A search of the site for Clinton Iran does turn up a story but I have no idea what it says.

There is a report on the whole thing with details here:

http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1641.htm

Normally I would dismiss this as fever swamp stuff. But it is Clinton and you can never dismiss any story about them, no matter how crazy (Imagine, a semen stained dress. That Drudge guy is nuts)

I doubt it is true but someone should get the state dept on record denying it.

We already know her condition. It is serious enough she will never have to testify about Benghazi, but not serious enough that it will harm her future in politics. Though it is serious enough to support the idea she is a strong leader because she 'overcame' her condition.

The blood clot will be blamed for her amnesia during her Senate testimony.

Jeez, Althouse. Stop being such a gossip. Wy don't you eal with the facts that you have? You don't know anything, so stop acting like you do. The woman is sick, and you've been gossiping based on your limited information for weeks now, because you want to make a huge deal out of Benghazi. Your desperation has revealed that you're a pretty shitty person.

Buzzfeed posted about conspiratorial conservatives who look shitty now that the state of Clinton's health has grown more serious. Why double down on your conspiracy theories? Why not just wait to see what happens to her? If you don't believe her, why not just shut up? Why are you being so shitty?

We are about to go over the fiscal cliff. The Republican caucus in Washington is broken, and will be blamed for not being able to even make it close to a deal. Meanwhile, with the other news story, conservative activists cannot help but continue to sneer about Clinton's health. Basically, you all look bad.

2013 might be a time for resolutions: fewer conspiracy theories, less knee-jerk hate for everyone who doesn't agree with one politically, more thoughtfulness about whether what one is writing contributes to a substantive discussion and isn't meaningless gossip. Basically, resolve to stop being a shitty person.

Sadly, I cannot agree.

Nixon faced an extremely hostile press determined to dig out the truth.

My biggest fear in relationship to the Obama admin is precisely that it faces no adversarial press to reign in the normal human tendency toward corruption and self-dealing. This may lead to disaster as events unfold.

i don't know, but really, why do you give such a shit whether she testifies in five minutes or in two weeks? by your logic she would have to keep ramping up health excuses to get out of testifying. And it's not like the Republicans in the House have any crazy information to sting her with. In the end, there would be all of this conspiracy for nothing, it doesn't make sense. The conspiracy would truly just be to delay her having to go to capitol hill, where she would get some Republican committee members just being stern with her. The State Department investigation didn't touch her and the House investigation won't be done until she's gone, and her testimony won't change the results of that investigation much. Just logically, there's no need for a conspiracy.

But that wasn't my point--my point was that all this conjecture and speculation and gossip is inappropriate and makes you guys look like jerks.

You don't know whether those "you guys" are really the fierce Bush supporters you imagine.

Strawman #1.

The issue here is whether the Obama admin engaged in malfeasance in a particular incident, not whether we have a moral aversion to death in combat.

Strawman #2.

You have anything relevant to say that's actually about this topic?

jd said...

@AllenS...you came up with to nonfactual statements...that doesn't mean they are unable to ever be truthful.

You're trying to put forward a syllogistic fallacy, sorry.

Hagar said...

A little off topic, but yesterday's thread got hijacked:

1. Sen. Feinstein said "... They aren't good hunting weapons. I mean, no hunter, in my view, worth his or her salt, would use an assault weapon to hunt, and, they're not necessarily good defense of[sic] weapons."

Not true, in the configuration usually pictured and .223 cal., it is an excellent varmint and small game gun. And, of course, if you are going to hunt big game, order the rifle in a configuration suited to what you are going to use it for and to your personal preferences in stocks, etc.

Besides, we should make national legislation based on Sen. Feinstein's personal opinions about activities in which she does not engage and knows nothing about, other than what she has seen on TV?

2. "... as a matter of fact, the Bushmaster has a legal slide you can put on it to make it fully automatic. And just pump out slews of bullets and it gives --"

I do not believe that this can possibly be true. Such a device would certainly be illegal to have installed on an AR-15 in your possession, since it then, ipso facto, would be a fully automatic firearm.

So, after all this time, Senator Feinstein simply has not bothered to find out the most elementary things about a very hot-button issue on which she proposes to introduce legislation.

And I had thought that she at least was bright and relatively honest - at least for a Democrat. I am sorry to see I was wrong about that.

AllenS said...

"Oh, noes! I didn't lie, they were just nonfactual statements!"

KCFleming said...

Shit, jd, Bill wouldn't even agree to the meaning of the of the word "is."

@AllenS. Yeah on New Year's Ever morning I'm going to research the archives of this blog to find proof of the fact that conservatives didn't storm the pentagon demanding an account of why the post-invasion planning for iraq was so shitty. Why don't you prove that negative for me?

@shouting thomas. Your straw man #1 is actually a straw man of your own position. If you're upset about malfeasance, it should not be narrowed to a particular president. unless you don't care about malfeasance, but rather care more about shitting on a particular president/secretary of state. Which is what appears to be the case. Your straw man #2 doesn't make sense, it seems like a mean to just say you don't like what I'm saying so you're going to say I'm not saying anything substantive.

Shouting Thomas said...

And it is my understanding that the trigger mechanism on an AR-15 is a sealed unit that has intentionally been made very difficult to tamper with.
This is, of course, not so for other semi-auto rifles, such as the old M1 carbine, f.ex.
I would also think that a clever tinkerer with access to a machine shop could turn quite "Feinstein legal" rifles into full auto's.
But it is the Bushmaster specifically that she is talking about.

Also note that it is possession of a full auto that has been illegal since 1934.

Likewise, manufacturer's are prohibited from offering shotguns with short barrels for civilian sale, but since we all have hacksaws, it is again possession that is banned for the citizens.

There has been a consistent pattern of lies, evasions, misdirections, and delays since 9-11 from the Obama administration, including Hillary, on Benghazi.

We have every right to be suspicious about these odd, unclear announcements about Hillary's health that only surfaced when she was about to testify on Benghazi.

The questions about Benghazi are simple chain of command issues. Who decided not help the Ambassador before the attack? Who decided not to help the Ambassador during the attack? Who decided not to tell the truth to the American people after the attack?

We are asking for information known to Obama and his top advisers in the government and military.

It's more than 3 1/2 months later and we still don't what happened at Benghazi because Obama and his people won't tell us.

Whatever is happening with Hillary looks like part of that pattern. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, maybe it's both.

I have a friend whose brother is an NFL Hall of Fame QB. This friend told me once of something his brother observed in his very successful football career, and something I've seen frequently as well, after having him name this phenomenon:

When a player (typically a skill player like a quarterback) makes an exceptionally bad play (like throwing an interception at a key juncture in a game), many times, that player will "pull up lame" or hobble off the field as if to garner sympathy or somehow explain the reason he has made such a horrible mistake.

He calls it "Loser's Limp."

No medical word on whether said limp creates clots...

We really shouldn't have to guess at the health of our politicians, especially in this day and age.

Bruce Hayden said...

I am not a doctor, and a couple of posters up stream most likely are. But, it does sound to me like Hillary! has some health issues, and someone is hiding stuff about it. I am normally as cynical as the next wingnut about the Clintons, but the fact that she couldn't testify because of her health, then was going to, and now can't again is too complicated to be totally a ruse to keep from testifying, which is why I think that there are real health issues involved.

Now, it could be cosmetic surgery, but I think that that would be too blatant, even for a Clinton, for her to delay testifying so that she can complete getting a face lift, etc. If she shows up looking a decade younger than she did a month or two ago, she will predispose a lot of Republicans, in particular, towards doubting pretty much everything she says. And, they would probably start off her questioning by asking: "Did you refuse to comply with your subpoena so that you could get cosmetic surgery? Or, were you just trying to run out the clock?" Something like that. (Assuming that they had subpoenaed here, which I cannot remember at the present time, esp. after both she and Gen. Petreaus were talking about invoking the 5th Amdt.)

Another reason that I do somewhat believe that she has real health issues is that she has pushed herself far harder over the last four years than most people in their mid-60s do. She has been in the air traveling to different countries around the world fairly constantly during her term in office. I think that she has traveled more than her immediate predecessors, and part of it, I think, is that they worked much more closely with the White House than she has been able to do. Dr. Rice got the job because she was GW Bush's right hand person and alter-ego when it came to foreign relations. Hillary! got her job, I think, through a political payoff of some sort, and has been doing what she could to affect foreign policy, while the real decisions were being made in the White House. And that has meant, I think, an awful lot of travel, even more than is typical of a Secretary of State. I think that travel, as well as a fairly grueling work schedule, is what has aged her so much, and I think probably adversely affected her health.

A great deal of that has got to be large numbers of Dem supporters essentially whistling past the graveyard (whistling in chorus to boot — to give themselves more courage) — rather desperately hoping and praying that there really doesn't turn out to be anything too scandalous when the truth about the government's response to Bengazhi (in progress and after) comes out.

Nobody's talking about an "elaborate hoax."

The statements in question have been issued by the Obama admin and the State Department, not by Clinton's doctors.

It takes only one person in the Obama admin to issue a misleading, but not entirely accurate, statement. No elaborate hoax is needed.

A blood clot in the leg would not raise immediate questions about mental clarity and competence.

He told me that this could cause anything from complete paralysis down to no physical effects at all.

If she had the clot in her brain, which is what the papers seem to want us to believe, she has had a stroke. Now we need to know how badly affected she is.

If the clot was in her leg or elsewhere, well, best wishes for a speedy recovery and prompt retirement.

Actually, if the clot was anywhere, best wishes for a prompt recovery and speedy retirement.

This doesn't sound particularly confusing or ominously, darkly, mysterious.

It sounds as if she's suffering from a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, that is, one aside an artery, usually in the leg. This is routinely treated with anticoagulants, that is--blood thinners.

I understand that she has suffered from this before. Her spokesman has specifically clarified that the notion that the clot was located in the head (a subdural hematoma, not treated with anticoagulants), was assumed by a reporter on the basis of the concussion.

In fact, the clot was discovered as a result of an exam that occurs routinely in case of concussion, but was not stated to be located in the head.

Sorry folks.

I suspect that if it is true, it is because some people are more equal than others, and a Clinton, 4th or so in line for the Presidency, is much more equal.

To me, not a medical professional, as I know all of you are, it makes some sense. My understanding is that she has had leg problems since her long-ago pregnancy, manifesting in those elephant legs that she works to hard to hide with her pants suits. That was maybe 30 years ago, and she is now in her mid 60s. It may be as simple as her attending physician asking if there were any other symptoms with the concussion, her mentioning something about her leg, and, with her being all that more equal, instead of dismissing it as irrelevant to the condition, checked up on it, and found a clot. Or, something like that.

somefeller said...

I think the serious people (national security personnel, administration officials, important Democratic or reasonable GOP Senators and Congressmen, etc.) should be allowed to do their work without being hassled by right-wing bloggers, radio hosts and the politicians who serve them.

And grownups don't need to drop everything to cater to and respond to questions from obnoxious children. It's a simple concept and these are serious matters.

Bruce Hayden said...

Right now, he is riding high on his reelection, and could afford the embarrassment of being found out for sitting on the side lines watching as these Americans died working for him, and doing nothing. They were able to punt the scandal beyond the election, and now should come fully clean ASAP.

That said, I don't think that he is that smart. He has managed to bury Fast and Furious, as well as his school, immigration, and draft histories, and probably figures that the MSM will continue to cover for him indefinitely. We shall see.

Unknown said...

Sure.

It would be routine to examine a patient, particularly one who has a prior history of DVT, and has suffered a concussion, for the possibility of a clot.

Particularly in adult patients, there is a risk of clot following a concussion. You should contact your health care professional or emergency department right away if you have any of the following danger signs after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body:

Headache that gets worse and does not go away.
Weakness, numbness or decreased coordination.
Repeated vomiting or nausea.
Slurred speech.

Such an exam would not only be routine, but to neglect it in a patient with a prior history of DVT would probably be negligent.

Unknown said...

Also, you might keep in mind that she has now likely

-Been examined by internists, cardiologists, radiologists and surgeons;

-Has had MRI, lab tests (repeated), X-Rays, phlebotomy--all of which have produced results;

-Has been seen by multiple nurses, nurses aides, PA's and other medical professionals

-Has been prescribed a regimen of medications, including anticoagulants, which have been dispensed from the hospital formulary.

This would require a remarkable conspiracy of medical professionals--who, on the day before, did not know she was coming.

What does that even mean, garage?
Are you drunk already?

Well, it's 5 o'clock somewheres, I guess.

Garage, I doubt if they will believe even this new news.

"Ann Althouse should change her name to Ann Outhouse"

Man, a regular Oscar Wilde.
When he was five, maybe.

garage, you're such an intemperate, bitter partisan.

You aren't interested in anything but propaganda.

Remember all those indictments against Gov. Walker that you just knew were imminent?

Shouting Thomas said...

So, we're going to pretend, huh, that leftists are temperate in their remarks about Republicans?

Bullshit, Inga.

You are a sanctimonious, prudish old hag.

garage is not my idea of a reliable news source, either.

I'll be satisfied with Clinton's health status and willingness to testify when I see her taking the oath in front of a congressional committee.

"Symptoms and signs of CVT can be grouped in three major syndromes:

■Isolated intracranial hypertension syndrome (headache with or without vomiting, papilledema, and visual problems)
■Focal syndrome (focal deficits, seizures, or both)
■Encephalopathy (multifocal signs, mental status changes, stupor, or coma)

■Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is uncommon, with an overall incidence of <1/100,000 annually. The disorder is more common in neonates and children than in adults, and among young adults more common in women than men. The mean age of onset is 39 years old.

■In elderly CVT patients, the proportion of cases without identified risk factors is higher (37 percent) than it is in adults under age 65. The most common risk factors in those ≥65 years old are genetic or acquired thrombophilia, malignancy, and hematologic disorders such as polycythemia.

Inga, it's not just that we don't believe this latest news, it's that we've been taught not to believe anything the Clinton's say by the Clinton's themselves. The timing, the slow release of information, the contradictions, the whole shady context of it is typical of the Clinton machine. We've been carefully taught.
