"President Barack Obama and Psy shared the stage in Washington on Sunday but didn’t dance 'Gangnam Style' together."

"Obama has said he thinks he can do 'Gangnam Style' — Psy’s signature dance — but hasn’t proven it yet."

The 2 mega pop stars just shook hands, and nothing (apparently) was said about that inconvenient lyric of his that goes:
Kill those fucking Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives
Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture
Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law, and fathers
Kill them all slowly and painfully

The mainstream press won't report it to the point where it is commonly known, therefore the nation will not have to ask:

1. Is the president so clueless that he doesn't know the slimy past of a White House guest?

2. The president does not have any problem with Psy's view of America and our military.

Two questions:

1. Is PSY short for PSYcho?

2. When he sings "Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture" and continues with "Kill their daughters" and doesn't mention their sons, is he specifically thinking of Obama, Bush, Clinton, or all three? They have five daughters and no sons between them. (Come to think of it, Cheney also has only daughters.) Of course, PSY does go on to mention "daughters-in-law", which implies sons, but apparently the sons get to live.

So:

a. PSY seems a bit misogynistic, wanting to kill the daughters and daughters-in-law but not the sons (if any). Or maybe he's just confused.

b. References to daughters take him more than half-way to a specific death-threat against the current president and one or two of his immediate predecessors. The references may not be quite clear enough to be prosecutable, but they sure as heck ought to be enough to convince the Secret Service to keep him far away from Obama, Bush II, or Clinton - and their daughters.

Which brings up another question: Did Sasha and Malia get to meet this delightful person? (I can't be bothered to read the news stories to find out.) If so, do they know he wants them to be killed? That's the clear implication of his lyrics.

I was at the Army Navy game on Saturday and it is a tradition to show home-made videos done by the cadets or the middies. The gangnam dancing was used in many of the videos and was a big hit with the fans in attendance. Surprised nobody has noticed the John Yoo irony. Yoo even looks like Psy.

John Choon Yoo (born July 10, 1967) is an American attorney, law professor, and author. As a former official in the United States Department of Justice during the George W. Bush administration, he became known as the author of the Torture Memos on the use of what the CIA called enhanced interrogation techniques.

Yoo emigrated with his parents from South Korea to the United States as an infant. He grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating from the Episcopal Academy in 1985. He earned a B.A. degree summa cum laude in American history from Harvard University in 1989 and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1992. Yoo was admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania in 1993. From 1995 to 1996, he was general counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is married to Elsa Arnett, the daughter of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Peter Arnett.

They can, but the concern we should have is whether they would then each feel it necessary to declare as nuclear powers, destabilising the East Asian power balance. Japan easily has the technical capabilities to develop a nuclear weapon (if they don't have one already). Until 2004, South Korea also had an active, covert program to weaponise uranium (in violation, I believe, of the 1994 Agreed Framework).

Balfegor said...

Also, quick question, as I cannot find a video of the original performance -- is Psy signing/talking in Korean or English? I would go further and dissolve NATO. Outside of Britain, France and Germany, the rest don't have militaries inasmuch as they are nothing more than slightly better armed SWAT teams. NATO could barely maintain the air war in Libya without our assistance.

Colonel Angus said...

Why would this be destabilizing? Currently both nations enjoy our protective nuclear security blanket. Our withdrawal would only mean our nukes are replaced by their own, should they choose to arm.

Quite frankly I think our financial unsustainability of being Europe and Asia's protector coupled with our ever increasing welfare state are a bigger threat than Japanese or ROK nukes.

Look on the bright side, if the Asian theater decides to beat the hell out of itself, we could find ourselves enjoying those halcyon days of the 1950s when American manufacturing was at its height and outsourcing wasn't even in the vocabulary.

If Republicans will not learn and think the only reason we lost was America now wants anti-American celebrity, the full gay agenda, and mo' free stuff for Obamaphone mommas - they are missing the core problems:

1. Reaganism is a dead force. People no longer believe supply side economics grows the economy, no longer believe tax cuts for the rich pays for itself or creates jobs. 11 years of Bush-Obama proved that the 80s were a growth period for reasons other than supply side and tax cuts for the rich.
2. America is sick of Neocon wars that never end, and believe the Democrats will keep us out of such morasses.
3. 30 years of scandal and recurrent collapses in banking and finance have made Americans think the Leaders of Wall Street are not to be trusted and the Democrats can keep a better eye on them.
4. The problem with fixing all praise on the Owner class who "built that!" - is Republicans were out saying they would champion 2% of the population while the Democrats focused on the other 98% - the workers and customers. And while many workers like The Boss - they don't worship The Boss. And have different priorities.
5. Even though Clinton was also culpable - Republicans hold the bad for the gutting of American jobs due to Republican Reagan era dogma that Free Trade creates jobs instead of gutting them - and Republicans got pinned with the Party of Outsourcing as well.
6. The Religious Right goobers dominate the Deep South and Republican platform on issues like rights of rape zygotes and creationism and other stupid unproductive stuff that drives everyday secular women away in droves.

Not so. We can withdraw the "Heroes with boots on the ground" - as even back as far as 1950s we saw each outing of the ground grunts as horrifically expensive and of little value in swinging any conflict we entered. With a big chunk of the AF and Navy budget in theater used simply to protect ground troops that usually could not defeat the enemy.

The Army is far less useful to US security or even helping in other country's defense - than the other branches.

Withdraw the Army from S Korea. Leave Japan and S Korea with a commitment for air and naval support and the nuclear umbrella. And force the S Koreans to start paying for part of US defense costs like Japan has long done.

How much is a security commitment from the US worth, without US troops in country as a trigger? Do you really think the American public will support getting involved in a real war -- not a dinky punitive expedition like we've been performing in Afghanistan/Iraq for the past decade -- but a war whose opening act will be the levelling of Seoul or a nuclear attack on Tokyo, with hundreds of thousands dead, millions diplaced, etc., without troops already in the line of fire? The pacificts will be screaming "No blood for cars! No blood for cellphones!" in the streets.

Re: Colonel Angus:

Cedarford has already noted this, but re: the nuclear umbrella, the destabilising element isn't that Korea or Japan couldn't establish the deterrent or be relied on to use it mostly responsibly -- it's what other countries would do in response. Quite frankly the American public would be demanding immediate withdrawal of American troops in that event. This country doesn't have the stomach for a real war. We've lost 6600 troops in the last 11 years which is less than the 6800 Marines and sailors killed in a little over a month on Iwo Jima. If CNN started listing American casualties in the hundreds on a daily basis in the ROK rest assured the American public would demand withdrawal.

"Kill those fucking Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives"

So, to Dustin and to many here, that first line seems automatically to translate into "kill our soldiers." Sorry Dustin, not the same thing.

and then

"Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture"

Those who gave the orders to torture are the ones that make this guy especially bloodthirsty, a bloodthirst extending even to the order-giver's family members.

"Kill torturers and their families"? Not the same thing as 'Kill our soldiers."

I'd say Obama shouldn't have met with the guy unless he is prepared to back up this incredibly incendiary language. But Presidents have met with worse people, this one has and the ones before him have.

I think my comment makes it clear I don't think Psy amounts to much...just a little fat kid yapping on about a Seoul-Gu that is extremely wealthy with housing cost comparable or exceeding that in NYC, the Hamptons, or Beverly Hills. That he yapped like a Yankee hater a while back doesn't surprise me...given our long history with his kind in Fonda, Kerry, Ayers, et al ad nauseum.

I haven't read all of the comments to see if any other speakers of Korean have chimed in, but "Yankee" has been mistranslated. The original lyric was "코쟁이"/kojengi, which means "nose bastard", aka, whitie/cracker. Yankee is simply "양키"/yangkee. Some in the conservative press here in Korea are saying this makes him not only a nationalist but a disgusting racist.

Gwen ... thanks for the translation. I never thought to look up the Hangul or spoken Korean for the lyrics. Not that it would have helped me much....it has been a long time since I read, let alone spoke, Korean.

Is this the same harrogate who spent all fall telling us how ugly we are?

One of the effects of spending all your time straining your ears for the sound of dog whistles is that you lose the ability to hear klaxons.

Paul,

On this website it's very often klaxons. Non-devotees hear them well.

I don't think Psy amounts to much, but that he is allowed on camera with the President of the United States is unacceptable.

That, however, is the fault of this president and his staff, not Psy.

Can anyone imagine President Reagan doing this? Bush the elder? Or the younger, for that matter?

Not even Clinton. Hell, even Carter would have balked at inviting this guy.

harrogate - English grammar isn't so precise in normal usage that you can say that the "soldiers who torture" is exclusive or inclusive.

In context it's more likely a description of soldiers as a set rather than a limit of a sub-set of soldiers.

In any case... ambiguous.

That you hear klaxons here but find a way to explain that Psy didn't say what he clearly said, or that he's limiting rather than painting with a broad brush... just *who* do you think he means? The handful of soldiers in prison for abuses at Abu Ghraib? Yeah, I guess Ms. England had a child. The team that waterboarded three high level Al Qaeda individuals?

He's singing about a couple dozen people?

No seriously... try harder.
