Buttons offed.
I finally figured out how to rid this blog of those damned "share" buttons. It's not that I'm against sharing — on Christmas! — but those things were slowing down the page loading. Had you noticed? Are you noticing a difference?

Absolutely speeded up loading your pages, Ann.
I noticed loading really bogged down on your blog a month or so back and I thought it might be you somehow had gone to 15-20 MPXL photos.
I hate all the social networking crap on every single web site.
Oh, boy, have I!
Sign me up if this is a petition.
Great move, Ann.
Can you bottle it and send some to all your other generals?
Oh yeah.
I noticed.
YABADABADOO!
Much faster and cleaner looking.
Much faster and cleaner looking.
Having ad block, I noticed that google plus one is the usual thing that's hanging in the address bar on loading. No more.
me too..
Yeah, I definitely notice the difference. Especially that damn google button, it was the worst.
See, you are in the giving spirit.
It's impressive how immediately those things were adopted in their nefarious forms. This forced me to make a counter list of of anti-social networking sites. They're names of storage sites and clouds, you can share, but with yourself, your other devices.
From Apple characters, If this will display:
❖ Nonaurbzwx.com
◘ Youneverasked.com
◀ Itwasntthatimportant.com
◉ EhIthoughtyouknew.com
✱ Didntcaretomention.com
✪ Nbbmo.com
preview showed those displayed, apologies if they don't. They're trying to be random logos.
But honestly, at the sight of the phrase I visualized two hands clasping the lapels of their own jacket and ripping them apart to reveal not a blouse but two voluptuous naked breasts. Buttons offed, pop pop, that's the image that happens.
Chip Ahoy:
Photoshop or it (your fantasy) didn't happen.
When you got Ann Hathaway going commando, David Gregory whipping out a magazine... can you blame Althouse for trying to pull something off?
Animated photoshop or your fantasy didn't happen.
I haven't noticed a difference in speed but there is one thing that happens only here, and it's done it on three machines that I noticed.
When a video loads at top, a blank box appears in the center of the video as it loads. Then fills in. A small thing, but odd, and only here. I thought that would end with the new machine, but it hasn't. It's not a problem, it's just one thing that make this site technically different from all those other thousands of places where that small interruption does not happen. So that makes me think, your unique witchcraft, Shirley, or perhaps some spell cast upon you.
Could be a variant of the Wisconsihex in use through the 50's to disrupt signals and vex service while collecting information without adding content. Could be. <-- 50% of trufax
Yes! Thank you....it was so annoying!
More efficient. Well done, Ann.
Woo hoo! No more blank white boxes in the middle of posts while the blog loads!
I had a page (Professor Jacobson) hang 3 times today on some facebook connection. I always wonder about these site designs where collecting likes seems like a higher priority than providing content.
I have a confession.
I use both Adblock and Ghostery, so I see none of that. No ads, no social media buttons, nice and clean.
I've been told that I'm a Very Bad Person depriving bloggers of their ad revenue for using Adblock. I justify my doing so by A. going through the Amazon portal when I can, and B. reminding myself that if the blog experience is slow, laggy and annoying I won't visit anyway, so the lack of my eyeballs on the ad is a moot point.
When an add starts to play, I just stop it, leave.. and figure I've probably heard what I was been asked to wait to listen to anyhow.
The saving grace of YouTube is that they let you skip after five to ten seconds or so.
But I suppose they way its going that's going to be gone... over the green monster.
Hey, how do you like that? where did that come from? it fits!
The Green Monster.
Dr Weevil, so I did. Hours ago, did it, and not all of these come out alright and I go, man this just sucks. And I mustn't put it anywhere.
I was thinking of the two hands together, nothing but hands then blam norks. This frumpy thing keeps changing everything I type. But the jacket I found and hands I found in a brief search resulted in fail. It's nsfw and unpublished, here in preview, forever pending in draft limbo.
Couldn't find hands. They had to be a precise configuration, although one hand would do. I could copy and flip it. Did not find in google images, know where I found the hands? Guess. Guess, I said. Yes! You win! I got them from the ASL dictionaries. Looked up the ASL word for "separate" Two of the dictionaries say the word the way I do and they're women's hands. Both screencaptures suck. So I picked the least suckiest and fixed them the fairly suckily but quickly by moving the wrist and extending with blur.
See? This is what happens in the perverse minds of men. You say buttons offed and then that up there happens. It's not even my fault, it's your fault with your wily ninja dog whistle phrases.
No, i did not notice but, now that you mention it, your blog loads much faster now & it is noticeable. I never realized how much juice those social networks use, it's obviously considerable.
Yes, thank you. There were times when I thought my computer must be malfunctioning, your page was so slow.
It's not that I'm against sharing — on Christmas! — but those things were slowing down the page loading.
Thanks a bunch, Althouse. It's good to know that you aren't against sharing as long as it doesn't require any sacrifice.
YES! YES! YES!
Thank you, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
I didn't notice the slow down, but I find on many blogs that those buttons cover part of the blog entry and are a pain to navigate around (sometimes not even possible to navigate around).
The in-text ads are another annoyance. Disguised to look like blogger links, they make it difficult to move the pointer around the page without blocking what I;m trying to read.

This does seem a bit faster, but curious to see what happens when you have a video in one of the first posts.
It's good to know that Jake Diamond is all in favor of sharing, even when all he's got to share is bile.
Yeah. I noticed too.
...and count me among those who won't miss not having "social network" tags available.
Bah!
Yes, and my company internet monitor app has stiopped overlaying its wanton reminders that your site contains content that might be prohibited by our Code of Conduct.
The site definitely loads faster for me, both via laptop and PC on the one hand, and my smartphone on the other. The hollowed-out blank space with loading is also gone, though that only appeared on my smartphone. I have a Windows Phone 7 system running on that, and I assumed it was some weird mismatch. The empty-space issue appeared only on this site.

You're such a tease, Althouse.
The only thing I see when I follow the links is:
"Invalid Security Token
Error 403"
But it shows REALLY fast.
