What Petraeus needs to do to get his reputation back.

This is a topic for brainstorming. Meade and I are talking about it after reading a provocative comment in the "Did Petraeus lie" thread. Bagoh20 said:
I'm not interested in all this mental masturbation, but it continues to amaze me how many people will sacrifice every principle for Obama, man who has lied to them repeatedly and come up short on every bit of promise. He's gonna need to perform a few miracles, be crucified, and rise from the dead to deserve it. How many journalist, pundits, and regular folks have fallen far and hard. People, who confronted with their hypocrisy and lack of discernment, now just shrug, [are] willing accept what would have been repugnant just a few years ago. I have lost respect for so many. I hope Petraeus does not turn out to be a disciple as well. We could use a clear-headed Judas about now.
Judas has a bad reputation, but having put the familiar Jesus template on Obama, we see why bagoh20 used Judas as the model. He's saying Obama needs a betrayer, and the name Judas also evokes the word "betrayal," a word so strongly associated with General Petraeus, notoriously called General Betray Us.

But Petraeus is already dishonored and exiled. You have to betray from the inside. You have to sacrifice something valuable to yourself to build a reputation through disloyalty. As an outsider, you've got a motive to bad-mouth those who ousted you. It's hard to get credit for taking revenge.

Still, Petraeus knows what he knows, and he can be a truthteller. I think there is a path to prestige through loyalty to the truth. He has begun to take that path by openly confessing to adultery — which is a disloyalty to his wife but a truthtelling. Compare Bill Clinton's early engagement with his Lewinsky problems: He lied. But Petraeus is caught up in lies. He lied about the adultery before he confessed. And he seems to have lied to the House Intelligence Committee about Benghazi.

It's a hard path to prestige through truthtelling, but what other path is there?

Right now it seems the media sees him as a way to destroy the military (gotta have all those defense cuts for food stamps), so he's going to have to go for broke (notice I didn't say all in or all out? you're welcome) and just spill everything.

If we're lucky, there'll be an Internet video in it that goes viral.

Nothing like a subpoena to get at the truth. Nothing like a fear or perjury, or obstruction of justice.

Mr. President, you said that no one wants to know what happened at Benghazi more than you. Do we need an independent prosecutor to look into this?

Sure, Petraeus could tell the truth, just as Robertson could have ruled against Obamacare, just as Republican congress members could have pushed pack hard on Obama's executive orders, just as the media could have covered Benghazi or Fast and Furious or the New Black Panthers or the ballot box stuffing in Pennsylvania, etc.

But nothing seems to happen beyond the usual voices in the wilderness of the blogosphere or talk radio.

Petraeus' reputation is gone.

There is absolutely nothing he can do to get it back, but he could partly redeem himself by publicly unloading on all of the lies and crap pulled by the Obama administration on him and others.

Problem is, he does that and they'll bring him back on active duty (you can with retired regulars), prosecute him in a kangaroo court martial, and send him to jail and take away his pension.

If he didn't have the balls to tell Congress the truth when he knew the Bamaites had the goods on him, why would anyone believe he'll tell the truth when (privately) threatened with jail, loss of rank, and loss of pension?

Petraeus is for the ash heap of history now. He might as well be a Russian in a Show Trial.

Getting his reputation back? You never come to grips with what the reputation was in the first place -- mostly competence in military matters, I should think. He's in the same company as Generals Patton and MacArthur and many others, good military leaders all but hardly models of personal rectitude across the board. The idea of a great military leader brings with it a sort of square-jawed image of the fearless fighter, brimming with strength and rectitude, but that's mostly a movie-maker's fiction.

Petraeus' reputation as a general and military strategist who made the surge work in Iraq is secure. Nothing about his infidelity or dishonesty during his time as CIA director even casts a shadow on the reputation he developed as a military leader.

The post implies that Petraeus had a reputation for unspecified personal qualities but that's mostly just a reprise of the movie-maker's fiction about a great general's presumed personal strength and rectitude rather than anything else. "Truthtelling" now is beside the point as to Petraeus' actual reputation, and inadequate to restore a (fictional) reputation for sterling personal qualities he may never have had.

Ann ends with: "It's a hard path to prestige through truthtelling, but what other path is there?" The truth is that he was never a candidate for sitting atop a pedestal, with all the attendant hero-worship. If anything comes out of this mess, perhaps the reminder that these guys, no matter how great and inspiring they are in some things, are very much like the rest of us in everything else.

"I don't think Americans will wait until they are missing meals to get really cranky about the economy and taxes."

Tax the rich, the blood suckers.

One amazing thing about the so-called working class is they voluntarily subjected themselves to Union bosses's exploitations, they are jealous of the rich, their employers. It's always other people's fault that they can't find a job.

I asked a union worker once how they could approve of the union boss's half a million salary, his inch thick gold chains, his Hugo Boss suits, Italian shoes, chauffeured limousine. The brainless worker told me, the boss has to keep up appearances so he would not be looked down by the management in negotiations in which they would get another 25 cents per hour.

The mind boggles.

Via neo-neocon, this is worth a read. Here’s a tasty morsel:

TO THE GLOATERS crowing over the comments sections of every conservative and Republican website: burn through every gallon of that sweet euphoria as quickly and fully as you can, for it will very soon become stale and leave only the putrid taste of rot in your mouth. I know you, for I’ve seen your peers and walk among them in the Land of the Frenchmen. Tomorrow, the effects of your plebiscite will pierce through the exhilaration of your victory, and they will crush you as much as they afflict those you mock today.

Just as they did in France, the policies you champion will affect everyone’s standards of living, directly and indirectly. If you are wealthy today, your wealth will dwindle tomorrow. If you are already poor or believe yourself so, you will never rise and prosper.

Soon, just as the French did, you will realize that you’ve elected yourself servants of an unaccountable oligarchy courted by a small intelligentsia to which you will never belong, from which you will never profit and of which you can never get rid. Then, you will join the legions of what the French call les déçus de la Gauche, or "the Left’s disappointed"—Indeed, even in Left wing France, the Left never fails to disappoint its followers for it is made of and thrives on fallacy and deceit.

Just as the French, when you realize that the effects of the political model you tout today cascade and accumulate to the point where you have effectively handed that oligarchy a permanent majority that begins to feed on its pawns—you—it will be too late and your loss will be complete.

Understand this: I am not a US citizen nor a resident in the USA, so this is not the bitter retort of a sore loser. This is a prophecy from a foreigner who has seen your future because he lives in it: you, my friend, who laugh today will cry twice as much tomorrow.

I'm beginning to think that the depth of Benghazi is that it was a gun running operation to the brotherhood and AQ backed rebels against Assad. More or Fast and Furious in the Middle East. That levels to conflate and twist the truth in this regard will be a history book unto itself. This will not bode well for anyone, much less for this country.

Even Iran/Contra tried to sink to this level with the implication that Oliver North's and his secretary, Fawn Hall had a fling which was another smokescreen that ended up being false, I believe. But the stain of Benghazi is going to be with us for a long, long time because of the terrorist impact of it all. Obama is trying to ride out the wave that Bin Laden is gone, therefore terrorism is too. This will not work and it will only embolden the enemy to continue these attacks on our soft spots.

Our underwear is showing and they stole our pants. Thanks Obama. This is on you.

I’m with Methdras on this and have said so previously. I understand that the CIA’s station in Benghazi appears to be the largest in the Middle East. There is every reason to believe that the CIA was using their facility collect the weapons K-daffy had in large quantities to be shipped to Syrian rebels using the Turks are the conduit. As an added bonus, we may also have been involved in some rough-and-ready interrogation of people we didn’t like.

The Right supported Petraeus because we like victorious generals, but we have absolutely no idea of his political views. We can be fairly sure that he is a political animal because you don’t get four stars without that qualification.

The press remains perfectly willing to accept Team Obama’s explanation for everything.
Attack on Benghazi cause by a video? Sure.
Not enough security because nobody ever told them? Sure.
The only real force that could be mustered had to come from the US? Yep.
Nearly a week after the fact Rice goes on all the talk shows and blames the video? Makes sense.
Rice is picked as the front man instead of Clinton because she knew nothing about the attack except what Team Obama told her. Of course.

Who wrote the talking points for Ambassador Rice? Who cares?
What was the facility in Benghazi? Shut up.
Why was the Ambassador there on 9/11? Why not?
What was the meeting with the Turkish official about? None of our business.
Were we "walking guns" to Syria's rebels, if so, is there any indication of Iranian or Syrian involvement in the attack? We already told you, it was a spontaneous demonstration that got out of hand.
Who knew what and when; specifically what orders were given? Look a squirrel, or sex with a General.

An ex-diplomat called this the Whitewater defense which turned garden variety political bribery into a sex case distracting everyone from the real crime. And Team Obama could not be more pleased that the MSM has been given an excuse to focus on salacious details while the Benghazi scandal is forgotten by everyone except the alternative media. And look boys and girls, it’s a twofer: not only does it distract attention from military and diplomatic disasters, but it is well on its way to decapitating the military.
