"Archaeologists in Bulgaria are chuffed today..."
I love the word "chuffed." And "boffins": "Tomb-raid boffins find golden hoard of the warrior Thracians/Spartan-arse-kickers who produced Spartacus..." (How's that for a headline?)

I didn't know Wodehouse was still writing.
"However, despite being desperate hardcases, the Thracians weren't what you'd call intellectuals and produced no written records or language of their own", but they liked bling", sounds familiar.
I thought boffins were birds.
Otherwise, very interesting stuff.
B. Kliban cartoon:
Two oddly dressed men, armed with swords, square off against one another amid ancient ruins.
"Listen, buddy. I'm a Scythian and I don't have to take any crap from a lousy Phoenecian."
In fact the Spartans kicked Thracian ass and every other Greek ass on the Peloponesse for over a hundred and fifty years. Maybe Thracians kicking Spartan ass refers to when they finally shaped up under Philip of Macedon, Alexander's father, very late in the Greek game.
boffin=under-class english for someone who knows things
Ah... I got "boffins" but had to read a bit further to realize that I had the meaning of "chuffed" opposite of what it is.
Chuffed= Thrilled to bloody bits.
