Paul Ryan tries to make the worrisome percentage 30, not 47.

"Seventy percent of Americans want the American dream. They believe in the American idea. Only 30 percent want the welfare state... Before too long, we could become a society where the net majority of Americans are takers, not makers."

Talk about not helping.

Amazingly (not) there's a lot of folks who have no idea what Romney said and why. More than 47%.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

Oh please. No political truths. We must only speak of lies and illusions. Hope and Change. Bullshit and crapola. Taxes and fees.

"Seventy percent of Americans want the American dream. They believe in the American idea. Only 30 percent want the welfare state," Ryan said.

It should be noted in the applicable Venn Diagrams that a good portion of those who favor a welfare state are doing quite well in their "careers", thank you very much, in many cases only because of the welfare state.

Ryan is clearly a racist; "takers" being a dog whistle.

If we're not still there today, we've been there already.

I look forward to the day when takers mock the makers for being too stupid to take.

What's the upside to making, much as "I didn't make that" anyway?

'Making' is just another structurally racist heteronormative construct of white male power anyway, right?

Yea whatever.

Only the lefties are whining about these truthful remarks about the welfare lifestyle we are funding. Most citizens agree with the criticisms, especially the tax paying middle class ones that aren't Koolaiders for Obama.

The lefties are whining about it because it is the ugly truth about the consequences of endless largesse with no accountability.

“Paul Ryan’s message at this open forum -- just as it is every day on the campaign trail –- was one of upward mobility and opportunity for all Americans. The discussion was about the size of government and nothing more.”

Nothing more. See.

My point is, I can agree with him all day, but is it politically expedient to talk in such a fashion?

Especially given the ongoing media narrative.

The Federal Government is like a club. The club needs to collect dues to pay the costs of remaining the club we all want.

47% of the members pay no dues. Many of them share the jobs of cleaning up the clubhouse or bringing food for the socials, but some of them don't even do that.

Some of the 47% actually sleep at the club house and eat the food in the club refrigerator. These are are also mostly the ones who pay no dues and never help with the chores.

In addition, there are many above the 47% who pay less than the per-member dues. They mostly help with the other stuff and don't take advantage of the club more than anyone else.

A few members pay many times the per-member dues, some even pay for hundreds or thousands of other nonpaying members.

The club is going bankrupt very quickly. The current elected board has been trying to fix this by giving away many more free memberships, and berating the highest contributing members.

The board is coming up for reelection and they have a lot of votes from the nonpaying members. And they say the future is bright for our club.

EMD, the optimist part of me (fleetingly small) thinks that either Romney and Ryan must confront this head on, spin be damned. I don't want them to cower, I want them to be bold and speak the truth. With so few actually trusting the media spin machine, it may even help. The media won't give them an inch unless they stop saying enough to give them a chance to win. The MSM narrative should not control the campaign.

Statistics.
Bah Humbug.
Just throw me a number.

No matter how true it is if a conservative says it it's an evil lie.
No matter how false it is if a liberal says it it's the gospel from on high.

So I just pick and choose the numbers I like.

I'm Full of Soup said...

That is a fairly reasonable approximation-about 35% of the country are Dems and most of them are taxeaters not taxpayers.

I'd like to see Ryan use a Wisconsin/Hawaii/Harvard/Southern Street accent.

Just every so often.

I have noticed something in our politics:

The right gets really pissed when you tell a lie about things, and the left gets really pissed when you tell the truth.

Example: Foodstamps
Point out the fact that many people are taking advantage of others to the detriment of all of us. The left gets really pissed by that, and calls it racist, which really pisses off the right. Truth / lie

Romney is paying the price for mismatching thoughts. There is a floor of Democratic support of about 47%. And there is a significant population whose votes for Democrats will never waver because of their government dependency. But the one group is a subset of the other. And by defining the dependent number at 47% Romney essentially said every Democratic partisan is dependent. Further he did it in a condescending way that prevents him recovering by saying he was only pointing out the government influence but not making a value judgement.

This was such a simple mistake to avoid (don't mention the %s, don't tie the two groups together, skip the condescension - any of these would work). And this is hurting him because it plays into the fears Democrats have successfully indoctrinated their supporters with over the generations.

Marxist inspired class hatred is real, and there's a good chance it will keep Obama Presient. We've already seen erosion of Obama's support stop, perhaps even reverse. Romney needs something during the debates to get it started again, but at this point I'm not sure what it could be.

I think this 47% meme only helps RR in Florida so I am thrilled the lefties are still whining about it. Nothing retirees like more than to hear about 47% takers, obama phones and free gas when they see their savings become worthless and their fixed income eroding by inflation. RR should be proudly repeating this to anyone with ears (or a hearing aid)

Apparently Ryan keeps changing the way the numbers add up in everything from his budget to this.

cubanbob said...

Politics isn't football. Winning isn't everything. What is the point of winning if when elected you can't govern?
Romney if he wins needs a mandate from the electorate to curb entitlement spending and if he doesn't make the case now how will he get congress to do what it must if he wins? Go big or go home. What this country doesn't need is a more efficient tax collector for the welfare state.

edutcher said...

The Romster used the number of people not paying income tax.

Ryan uses the number of Lefties plus about a quarter of the "moderates".

Not bad.

But I love this from the article, "It's not definitively clear whether Ryan said 'the welfare state' or 'their welfare state.' HuffPost originally transcribed it as 'their welfare state'."

So Puffington feels it incumbent to translate for us.

Its readers are too stupid to read the transcript or listen to the speech.

Old people in Florida reminded me of this.

When I worked at the FED, the people in Securities would tell me of the phone calls they get. There are a lot of very old people, women especially, that do not know anything at all about finances. Their husbands did all that. Their husbands set them up with with the safest investments they knew. They didn't pay high interest, but they were always reliably historically low risk. But then things changed to extended stretch of low interest, those investments don't pay what they were planed for and there is no husband around and they're too old anyway to re-plan. The women call in hopelessly confused and unable to cope.

This is how bad, and you might not believe this. One woman called and said, "How can my checking account have nothing in it when I still have checks in my checkbook?

mark said...

@roesch "... Ryan keeps changing the way the numbers add up ..."

Quite the accusation. Can you link the facts to that? I'd like to see how his budgets don't add up consistently.

For myself, it would be nice if democrats actually proposed and passed a budget. Maybe they wouldn't have put my kids trillions more in debt. Or stole billions from the non-union GM retirement funds.

Oh, God, that's what The Blonde's mom always used to say.

And, yes, her husband insisted on handling the money.

(back in the old, old days, Mama took the paycheck and put all the money in specific envelopes; she didn't want Papa blowing it at the corner saloon)

These are two different coversations and two different statistics.

1.)There are approximately 47% of the people who do NOT pay any INCOME TAXES. This is a fact.

Romney did not say that 47% of the population was on welfare or part of the entitlement mentality. Of that 47% many are hard working lower income people that don't pay any income taxes because the IRS Tax Code allows them deductions and exemptions.

2.)There ARE probably 30% of the people nationwide who are on welfare. It is 32% in the State of California. Many if not most of those are never going to be anything BUT welfare leeches and have adopted it as a lifestyle.

Those people will never vote for anyone who threatens their gravy train. They will never take responsibility for their own lives and plan to suck the lifeblood from the rest of us.

TWO DIFFERENT CONVERSATIONS

Sorry but you're just being dishonest about what Mittens said about the 47%. Mittens said they "believe they are victims." That's not consistent with "hard working lower income people;" that's consistent with what you call "part of the entitlement mentality."

Your post is an example of the Mittens etch-a-sketch tactic. Keep shaking.

Try again, sweetie. What he said was there's 47% of the electorate that was going to go Demo.

And that's it.

The rest was talking in generic terms about people who embrace the Welfare State.

It must be lousy to be a Lefty today. Everything said is available on transcript.

And Diamond needs to be careful about what he calls people. He uses the term so often people are going to start thinking he knows so much about it because he sees it in the mirror every day.

PS CHeck out the new Barry vid.

Racism on the half shell.

Bullshit.

Romney said this:

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it -- that that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. ... These are people who pay no income tax. ... [M]y job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

Apparently Mittens' fibbing problem is rubbing off on edumbshit.

Once again, is he including corporate takers? Farm subsidies? Defense? Tilting the laws with high octane lobbying and bribes? etc. etc. Or on a lower level, the *landlords* who profit from Section 8 (rather than the tenants, who profit much less)?

The Cato institute put corporate welfare at 100 billion in 2012:

Libya security. Murdered kids in Mexico. 2006 speech on Katrina. Murdered border agents. Murdered ambassador. Lockheed Martin layoff NON-warnings (WARN Act). Taxes on middle class.

Fibbing? Obama has pathological lying disorder.
