"Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit..."

"... resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities," reports the BBC. This is news, right?

Huge news in some circles. Somewhere around 10 million people play (including me) and it was talked about by a lot of people.

Wasn't that one diplomat killed in Benghazi a WoW player?

I don't doubt for some of them what happened to day is more real than Libya.

More real than Libya? I think you're buying into stereotypes a bit.

WOW has been out for 10+ years. The population is pretty adult in my experience. Sure, there is new players who are young but most of my friends are in their 30's with spouses and/or kids and a real life outside a game to boot.

Sure, it's a game but there is a lot of investment in characters over time, so it hurts. And it is a lot of people all together.

We've started playing Guild Wars 2. I'm not sure if I like it or not. I haven't played anything much since the semester started. I should probably play instead of come here. It would be a better break from school, more of a change of pace.

WoW is over. It should have been F2P a year ago. They missed the bus.

Pandas? Really?

John,

It's all about the pet battles now. Like the pokemon, you gotta collect them all.

They still have 10 million players paying 10 bucks a month, so they don't need to go free to play yet.

The funniest part of this was that South Park had a great episode a few years ago with almost the exact plot:

Fantasy seems to be a reality to people who need an escape to a land where they can be hope to be winners.

Two other examples are Lottery tickets and Fantasy Football. Both are betting games.

That's fine with me if it works for them, but it seems very boring.

Now about that fantasy President game...

When it looks like Paris circa 1349 or the Holomodor, yeah, it is sort of news. Or at least, a species of news-ish spectacular. As much so as anything Madonna gets up to these days, anyrate.

Yikes, so many preconceived notions here. People playing aren't like that despite what South Park would have you believe.

And it's $15 a month.
