4 theories — you haven't heard them all before! — about what happened in the first debate.
One of my theories is that Obama was preoccupied by what had happened in Benghazi 3 weeks ago, perhaps scrambling to keep it from turning into a scandal that would sink his campaign. Bob Wright's response is — absurdly — to bring up the ridiculous old theory that the high altitude in Denver played havoc with Obama's big brain.

I moved from Nashville to Denver for grad school. It did involve changes and adaptations to the altitude. The chief change was that the air was so dry I had dry skin for the first time in my life.
My grades stayed the same though. So Bob is grasping at Obama gasping.
Trey
That has to be the lamest excuse ever. I suspect that the pressurization in Air Force 1 has a lower ambient oxygen level as the city of Denver. Commercial aircraft fly at the equivalent pressure of 6000-8000 feet. Denver is 5280.
Bob Wright's response is — absurdly — to bring up the ridiculous old theory that the high altitude in Denver played havoc with Obama's big brain.
Did you feel a little dirty podcasting with such an obvious racist?
Ann Coulter had it right. Zero is a retard. Corky would beat him in a game of tic-tac-toe. Hell, the chicken at the state fair would beat him.
The President has spent so much time flying around the country, I'm sure he's adapted to altitude. Bet he could even go Diving the same day he flies, well at least a shallow dive. I call BS on Bob.
If Obama is so smart, why is it he's so dumb?
It's impossible Denver is at a higher altitude than Obama's head.
Dear Leader floats above all of us.
The Daily Mail has a pic of Santiago de Cuba after Sandy passed by.
50 years of Castrocommunism have taken its toll.
Sad.
It is hard to coverup Benghazi and debate at same time even with Candy Crowley tackling Romney when he breaks away on TD run.
Planes are typically pressurized to something like 8000 feet.
I guess images not attuned to reality are subject to quick topples.
The images did go from Romney dull to Romney exciting and Obama seductive to Obama useless trash.
So what changed was the public's perceptions of the long Con that Dems have used for 50 years.
Was that was the result of internet educating people?

He needlessly doubted his media whores. They have delivered so far.
I disagree with you that Obama was distracted. He doesn't care. The ex-SEALs were "bumps in the road." He may be distracted now that the coverup is failing but he has enough pressure on potential whistle blowers that the facts will not come out until after the election. Remember the Watergate coverup worked until after the election even though Nixon was hated by the press.
Interesting difference in the background chosen by the speakers.
Wright features a book shelf in the background. Althouse features the minimalist space dominated by a window facing toward the light.
Says a lot, doesn't it? One speaker features what is rapidly become an obsolete technology. The other features what I might call the Apple design theory.
I think Obama is just an undisciplined grump.
That's my theory.
Obama got head faked.
A week or so before the debate it "leaked" that Romney was practicing zingers, one-liners, and comebacks. Obama's handlers thought they'd counter by having Obama look like a victim--hurt and betrayed by the mean words slung at him. It would fit the Dem's lie campaign of Romney as am angry, mean-spirited bully.
Romney simply debated.
Btw, the one person that thought that Obama blew Romney away in the first debate was Obama himself. It leaked that Obama came off the stage pumping his fist and saying he "killed" out there. The sycophants around him looked at each other and decided to agree. They decided to tell him that one never knows how a debate went until the reviews start coming out. People surprise you.
Wright is an extremely annoying, poorly presented speaker. He never looks directly into his camera, and his voice has a screaming, hectoring quality.
If I were managing his video sessions, I'd clean up his act. I wonder why he doesn't work on his presentation.
Naturally the democrats being so brilliant could not have foreseen Denver's altitude effecting Obama's brain that simply must have copious amounts of ambient oxygen to properly function. They could have held the debate in a more dense oxygen laden location like a hyperbaric chamber.
The best explanation is usually the simplest. Obama has such disdain for Romney, and such confidence in his own righteousness, that he did not feel debate prep was necessary. But he was embarrassed by a prepared and focused Romnster. Obama did much better in the next debate; I attribute his improvement to practice.
I don't accept the explanation that Obama is just that dim. I do think he is immensely arrogant. Yet he claims that so much hinges on his reelection and so much will be lost if he is defeated. Thus, his dismissive attitude toward his opponent, and the debate more generally, is far more damning than a revelation of his incompetence. It evinces a disdain for the very American people he claims to defend.
Althouse's schoolmarm presentation is difficult to counter because it's kinda like shape shifting.
She just wants to be helpful.
She looks far softer and more receptive than Wright, who is all edges and frowns.
Althouse drives home her points almost invisibly within that cloak of playing the ever so considerate schoolmarm who just wants the kids to develop their innate skills.
Wright is an extremely annoying, poorly presented speaker. He never looks directly into his camera, and his voice has a screaming, hectoring quality.
Wright is deeply annoying. There is a supercilious whine when he speaks.
I have the patience to read him, but not listen for more than a minute.
Bloggingheads can get better speakers before they get any more of my minutes.
I guess we never want obama negotiating for our country's sake in high altitudes then. Cripes, these people are sad. Another day, and another excuse for a rapidly shrinking presidency.
Yep, Ann got the bozo on the pressurized insides of AF1 (or any plane). Haha. These liberals are so stupid but they think they know it all. Hubris.
He was sitting in Las Vegas getting ready for the debate. Why could he go to Denver and prepare like Romney did, if altitude was a factor? Goes to show the incompetence again.
1. overconfidence
2. lack of respect for Romney
3. poor preparation. (he took the day before off to visit the Hoover Dam)
4. a victim of a "yes Mr President" culture. (Since Rahm left, I bet nobody argues with him)...
You have it, Ann- Obama was himself. Romney was himself. Romney's self was not the Romney invented by Obama, but the Romney those who know him have seen. The rest of the nation were introduced to the Romney/Bain guy 'mode' many of us have seen before. The shock and awe of a particular command of facts and figures delivered with the precise tone and attitude required of the moment. Combine Romney's command with Obama following the election playbook strategy of: "...when you think you're leading, don't do anything stupid- make your opponent make up ground", and you get what we all saw...
Obama's first debate reminded me of how he behaved at the Health Care Summit. Yes, you can speak because I allow you to. But it doesn't matter what you think. This is the way it is.
Do all Democrats get stupid at altitude, or just Obama?
No need to come up with complicated theories to explain Obama's sub par performance in the first debate. He was rusty because he hadn't debated or been seriously challenged by anyone for four years.
Romney, on the other hand, had just gone through a serious of debates in the GOP primary. I attribute his improvement from the GOP debates to the fact that he didn't have to pretend to be a severe conservative anymore. He was more in his comfort zone as a mainstream pragmatist.
Altitude of Las Vegas is 2200 feet. What a whine? Shouting Thomas must have been a clown in school to complain about schoolmarms.
Let's Occam's Razor this: He did badly because that's within his usual range of possible performances, which was made worse appearing by Romney hitting at the top of his range of possible performances.
Well, I have noticed feeling more flatulent on a plane, which might be a process of pressure equalization.
Now that I Google, it's called "Jet Bloat".
Bloating can be an uncomfortable side effect of flying. It occurs because the gases in your body expand at higher altitudes.
Maybe Obama actually shit himself in Denver?
I skipped ahead to the Benghazi discussion. Althouse presented some facts about what happened. I don't know if those facts, e.g. the two ex-Seals killed sixty attackers before their own death, are beyond dispute, but I do know that those facts are out there. Wright looks like the kind of guy who prides himself on being well read and well informed. Yet he claims that he never heard of these happenings.....I'm sure Robert Wright is a decent person with humane instincts, but here he presents the kind of willful ignorance that causes such distrust of intellectuals.
If the altitude in Denver affects people so negatively, how can we let pilots who just arrived take-off again? We need new regulations that require them to spend a night before flying out again.
Googling to see if you're right and I'm wrong is a waste of your time.
One former liberal and one unabashed current dopey liberal making lame ass excuses for our dopey president.
Obama 'was preoccupied' with Benghazi?
Once again, Professor, I am amazed by your opinions.
It's to beginning to seem as if you are trolling your readers.
Most of the time you seem grounded and your ideas well thought-out but your blind spot regarding Obama is worrisome - you appear unable to apply to him the same standards you used in your observations of the OWS people.
When you look at Obama you continue to see him as a blank slate upon which you project what you imagine him to be instead of what he is: a terrible President without the necessary experience to lead the nation; a man so filled with extreme Leftist views married to a
narssacistic(sp) personality that he thinks he and only he is right.
A typical cabin altitude, such as the Boeing 767's, is maintained at 6,900 feet (2,100 m) when cruising at 39,000 feet
If I'm Robert Wright, I hope the Obamao doesn't have to make any decisions while on a plane.
I like the theory that were trying to wean him off coke for the debates.

Shout, do you have a thing for Ann?
I mean like that naughty librarian vibe a lot of guys said they got from Miss Sarah?
Sorry, Ann. I like your analysis most of the time, but with Bob Wright supplying half of the content, these conversations are so lame. He is unlistenable.
The discussion of Roe v. Wade slid into the ditch.
The Supreme Court is never, ever, going to "take away the right to an abortion." If the Court were to someday reverse Roe v. Wade, we would simply see the matter taken out of the federal constitutional context. No other "rights" would be adjudicated. I suspect that in places like New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, California, Illinois, Michigan and even Wisconsin, we would see state supreme courts find that somehow state constitutional law would protect the "right" to abortion.
Moreover, and more importantly, without the overarching construct of Roe v. Wade, we'd see state legislatures spurred into acting moderately on abortion; putting into law some of the moderate policies that most of the American electorate favors.
You know all of this already; this observation on my part is mundane and elementary for a Con Law professor.
But laymen really get the wrong idea, when authorities talk blandly about 'reversing Roe v. Wade and taking away the right to choose.' The framers of the Constitution would have had no concept of a "privacy" right to an abortion. We could very easily make it a part of the Constitution. We call those things "Amendments."
Historically, we gave women the right to vote by way of an Amendment. I fail to understand why everyone wouldn't accept that conferring a right to an abortion wouldn't be done the same way, procedurally.
I doubt Roberts will push for overruling Roe v. Wade. The man clings to stare decisis like Michael Moore to a back of barbecued ribs.
Ann, could you summarize your 4 theories so we don't have to wade through 10 minutes of Bob Wright? That would be nice of you...
Ann - take a breath every now and again!
Watching Bob Wright gives you a new appreciaiton for the macho facade that is Wally Cox.
