A number of states are just big cities which rule a hinterland as colonies: e.g. Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Washington, Oregon. I propose a number of new states be created. San-Francisco/San Jose/LA for one. Milwaukee/Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland for another. New York/Philadelphia/Baltimore/DC for a third.
Perhaps libertarians value choice and independence over safety and security.
I think you mean perceived security. The government cannot keep all the promises its made. We're running out of money
That would explain the "masculine" traits. (practical clothes, careers, less emphasis on looks, pleasing others)
This is just an ugly stereotype. I know many attractive, libertarian-leaning types. And for myself, I spend a crazy amount on lovely, high heeled shoes.
This all brings us back to Joel Garreau's 1981 Book The Nine Nations of North America--a hypothetical regionalization treatment broken down by economics, culture and topography. Check it out on Wiki gentle readers--makes interesting reading and fodder for endless speculation..

I just put this item up yesterday as a humorous aside to the whole 57 states thing, but it is a fascinating piece of history.
They left out Oiho. I know it's a state, the president said so.
The new state that will be there after Nov. 2012 and before Jan. 2017 will be:

Didn't Del Marva play second base for the Reds? IIRC, he ended up in jail due to his fondness for Nickajack.
Awkward: Transylania University is in Lexington. Lexington wasn't in Transylvania.
You can have the bourbon, we'll keep the scenic horse farms of the uberrich.
Only in Kaintuckee: Bourbon county is dry and Christian county is wet.
I live in a moist county.
There's a minor league farm team in baseball, the Delmarva Shorebirds. I appreciated learning more about Delmarva.
Wait till DBQ shows up and she can tell you about Jefferson. much better than I can.
All I want to say is that those a$$holes in LA stole our water.
