Jeremiah Wright says he was offered $150,000 in 2008 from "one of Barack’s closest friends" to stop preaching until election.

Edward Klein reports on his interview with Wright.
“Did Obama himself ever make an effort to see you?”

“Yes... And one of the first things Barack said was, ‘I really wish you wouldn’t do any more public speaking until after the November election.’ He knew I had some speaking engagements lined up, and he said, ‘I wish you wouldn’t speak. It’s gonna hurt the campaign if you do that.’

“And what did you say?” I asked. “I said, ‘I don’t see it that way. And anyway, how am I supposed to support my family?’ And he said, ‘Well, I wish you wouldn’t speak in public. The press is gonna eat you alive.’

“Barack said, ‘I’m sorry you don’t see it the way I do. Do you know what your problem is?’ And I said, ‘No, what’s my problem?’ And he said, ‘You have to tell the truth.’ I said, ‘That’s a good problem to have. That’s a good problem for all preachers to have. That’s why I could never be a politician.’

Well, let's see if any of Obama's surrogates accuse Klein of fabricating the interview or of misquoting Wright.

This would not have been all that different from what got Edwards into trouble.

“Barack said, ... ‘You have to tell the truth.’"

So, two possibilities:

1. BHO believes what Wright was preaching, which makes him a h8er.

2. BHO was just telling Wright what he wanted to hear, which makes Obama a liar (or at least a politician).

I don’t know if he had a wire on him. Said Wright, the truth monger, when meeting privately with Obama.

That would be my first suspicion too.

Hmmm....Chickens coming home to roost!!

Anyone who takes this at face value is as stupid as Obama hopes you could be.

Anyone who doubts that Wright has tempered his rhetoric need only compare this interview to any of his pre-campaign sermons.

This is disinformation -- one of the Left's favorite tools. (It's a fancy word for fraud.)

harrogate,

That's soooo interesting!!!!

You think it's not? I would've thought a close friend of a Presidential candidate telling the candidate's clergyman to STFU already would be "interesting." YMMV, of course.

What it really says, if true, is that Zero didn't trust the Establishment Media.

Because they were white?

Michelle, no, it's not very interesting to me, even if it is true. Lots of pundits were shrieking about Wright; it wouldn't surprise me at all if someone invested in Obama's election tried to get him to stop preaching. I think the whole thing is stupid. The outrage over Wright was stupid. Efforts to stop him from preaching, if true, were stupid. Acting like this is huge information now, giving Klein money for this kind if "E" channel quality writing, is stupid.

Sometimes, I grant, "stupid" intersects with "interesting." I give you Charlie Sheen, for example. But in this case, they're on different planes.

I would be interested in hearing the Rev. Wright's views on gay marriage. I feel that there many more facets to this man's bigotry than just his feelings about whites.....That's something you will never see on tv: a black preacher or latino evangelical being interviewed about their feelings on gay issues.

One interesting thing about this year's election cycle is that when Democrats try to demonize Romney's Mormon faith, they're opening up the whole Wright issue. After all, if it's acceptable to look into what Mormonism teaches, then it's acceptable to discuss the things Wright preached for some 20 years with Obama in the congregation.

After all, that's only "fair" and we all know how much the Democrats believe in fairness, right?

I wonder if all this belated 2008 vetting is an attempt to get Obama to run against Bush again.

Obama is a poser. I don't think he cared what Wright was teaching or even listened. I think Obama is so ignorant about religion, that to him anything resembling Christianity was good enough for politics.

It has become quite obvious that Obama is completely tone deaf when it comes to religion. He barely "knows" the vocabulary and certainly never internalized it. It makes sense given his upbringing.

For once I agree with Harrogate. This doesn't tell me personally anything I hadn't already inferred about Obama and his close associates.

Whether it gets any traction with the Independents who voted for the Con Man in Chief the first time around is a different (and interesting) story. Would love to see a poll asking if this story changes opinions about Obama.

I also agree that this is a non-story. This is nothing that anybody who has looked at Obama's background would be surprised about. He plays hardball politics.

Beldar suspicions are probably close to the mark. Wright is just being neutralized for this election cycle.

Does anyone believe anything that the man says? And quoting obama as saying "you know what your problem is? You have to tell the truth". Come on. No one talks like that. It's a fabrication of a conversation he wishes he would have. Possibly by now he believes it himself.

A man's gotta put bread on the table and if exhorting his congregation to "Get the white debil!" does it, why that's honorable, right?

Well, the should prosecute Obama for conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws and then consolidate the case with the Edwards prosecution.

Is Wright a compilation of several clergy or did he call Obama a liar?

I believe, at this point, Wright had already retired from Trinity into a multi-million dollar house in a gated community.

So, totally by coincidence, an offer of money comes in over the transom, just as Obama asks Wright to shut up.

Damn.

JAL said...

Did Klein asked him if he accepted it or any other $$ or objects / positions of value?

So, now we know where Obama stands on God d*** America, on Anti-Semitism, bigotry and race hatred. He considers it the truth coming from Wright's mouth.

He's also an idiot because Wright insulted him more than once by calling him to a liar before his face. Whenever Wright saysn"politician" he means liar. That is the only conclusion you can draw from Wright's statements.

So Obama thinks highly of Wright, but Wright thinks Obama is a lying asshole.
