"Has recall election made Scott Walker a GOP hero?"

Asks Politico:
All the big GOP players now know Walker’s story by heart. Republican billionaires and megadonors are suddenly well-acquainted with him as well.

And if he wins in the June 5 recall against Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D) — which polls suggest he’s likely to do — his trajectory will very likely be even higher.

Not only will Walker be lionized by his GOP colleagues for embarrassing Big Labor and forcing the left to pour cash down the drain in a presidential election year, he’ll be credited with making the state more competitive for Mitt Romney.

Not bad for a rookie governor who has never been known for his charisma or burning political ambition....
The recall has put Walker in the position where he must advertise and promote himself, which might have been awkward before — and it was never his thing. TV viewers are getting barraged with Walker ads — and almost nothing for his cash-strapped opponent, and we're tolerating it because he was forced into having to defend himself. What a nice opportunity for him!

I don't watch all the TV shows, but this week, I've watched "American Idol" and part of a couple Brewers games, and I've seen ad after ad for Walker. I saw one ad against Walker, and it was a confusing complaint about how Walker is a "rock star." Idiots! They made him a rock star.

Ah! I found the "rock star" ad:

What do you think of the "rock star" ad?

I have little doubt this personal account is accurate...but then, I assume Walker's personality, as described herein, is probably pretty true to most who are drawn into politics.

By the way, has anyone seen the HBO series VEEP? Hilarious and painful, it probably gives a more accurate rendering of the humiliating experience of living and working (and "serving") in "the Beltway" than we will ever find in journalistic accounts. To the degree this show is reflective of the truth, we can only assume all who choose this life for themselves are seriously damaged people.

The article Robert Cook linked is actually hilarious. It was written by a very angry liberal who probably can't tolerate anyone who isn't just exactly like himself.

For a man who "isn't fit for office", Walker has done a pretty damn good job, both in Madison and in Milwaukee County.

Brian Brown said...

I'm not sure I'd refer to Walker as any sort of hero (but he has more political courage than Obama) but he certainly has exposed the public sector unions as bullies and losers.

Joe said...

The link from Cook reminds me of a dissenter in Utah about Romney; there is some vague criticism, but it's most ad hominem and after a while you realize that it's mostly about the speaker and some major bitterness they are carrying for reasons that are totally unclear.

(The link actually makes no case for why Walker is unfit for office. It's hardly about Walker at all and that which is boils down to "Walker is a bad man because I heard...". It's mostly about the speaker. It seems that the writer's bitterness is that he graduated and Walker didn't, but Walker made it big and the writer didn't and it pisses him off.)

Scott Walker was just another state rep who opined occasionally on the local sunday morning shows. The Milwaukee County pension scandal broke and he took the opportunity to get elected as county exec.

The unions and the democrats made Scott Walker's career long before he was elected governor. It is not surprising they are doing it again.

Bob Ellison said...

Robert Cook, the essay to which you linked is mostly opinion presented as fact, by a person who demonstrates him/herself to be a little biased: "...Scott Walker is the latest tea party right wing, uneducated, superstitious nut job bent upon destroying America with a virulent form of conservatism bordering upon fascism."

Don't you have a sense for liars? The author, Glen Barry, is off the charts.

He's also a lousy writer. "With a C average (if that) and never graduating, I am not surprised..."

It's an HBO show which will only be available on the network and online at HBO-GO (sort of an HBO version of netflix). Honestly, you should have HBO for Game Of Thrones alone, if nothing else.

VEEP is pretty damned good, but it's no GoT. For one thing, no Lannisters.

Patrick said...

Having read the article lined by Robert Cook, my first thought is this is not written by someone trying to He's writing for a self described radical magazine, and throwing bombs and innuendo, much as he accuses the Governor of doing. He uses an example of Walker's "bullying" at MU. Apparently there was a to do about the student government misusing student funds, which lead to resignations of some of the students in the government. Walker pushed for further investigation, and some sort of trial. Really, that doesn't sound like bullying, trying to determine whether the funding scandal went further.

Most of the rest is just the writer stating that someone who disagrees with him is unfit for office. And it's Walker who is the fascist.

I would think that Mayor Barrett's only hope to win in the recall election is to convince the independent voters that the Governor is taking WI in the wrong direction. Articles like that are not going to do it.

One last thing: the writer, and others like him make a big deal out of the fact that walker has no college degree. I know a lot of people with college degrees, I know a lot of people without them. From what I've seen, a college degree does not guarantee intelligence or even overcome ignorance. It is way too easy to think of people without degrees that would be much better than many of those who have graduated from elite schools.

He's a hero for putting Conservative policies into action and seeing them succeed. That doesn't make him a Republican hero necessarily since a lot of RINOs undoubtedly see him as eliminating opportunities for them to reach across the aisle to their friends in the Democrat Party.

The ad itself is a little counter-productive since it unintentionally draws attention - for those who know the truth - to all the government jobs that have been able to be eliminated, and thus money saved, due to his policies and that the trips Walker has made out of state to lure companies to set up shop in WI.

Walker reduced a 3.6 billion dollar deficit without raising taxes or directly laying off employees like the governor of Illinois. Despite doing the opposite of Walker, Illinois is a basket case, closing prisons and clinics and still having to modify employee benefits.

Walker's reforms allowed WI school systems to bid out health care insurance and saved hundreds of millions of dollars because the Union owned monopoly company was charging a third over market rates (and then funneling the excess money to Democrats)

With the educational reforms we will soon see bad teachers being released to more suitable employment and good teachers being elevated. Union attitudes about excellence and effective teaching processes will disipate and we will soon see improvement in out education.

With the savings in the schools, property tax pressure has lessened and state-wide property taxes declined slightly.

Its kind of hard to see why all taxpayers aren't considering Walker a rock star. Only those that are paying attention are.

This ad strikes me as a lame attempt to resurrect a theme from the McCain campaign against Obama. In 2008, McCain tried to tag Obama as the rock star/celebrity candidate -- the fake columns, the oceans recedeing, the Victory Column speech in Berlin, the adoring throngs, etc. -- all to make a point that O had done nothing and accomplished nothing. He was The One, The Anointed, but was celebrated just for being O. The intent was to show that O was an empty suit.

We all know how well that worked for McCain. But at least it was funny. This one is pathetic. If Barrett thinks this is good stuff, it's another excellent reason not to vote for him.

Walker's "threat" to "call out the National Guard" to force Act 10 was kinda hilarious. Does the writer know what the hell he is talking about?

He threatened the Guard to get lawmakers who ran away to get back and do their job. It's not like it was not going to pass.

And the "I thought he was a jerk in college so he isn't fit to be governor now" mentality was hilarious.

...see, because the writer comes across like an unmitigated asshole.

I on the other hand completely agree with those goals and no I don't need public employees doing me favors with my tax money. If the job can be done by private contractors for ten dollars an hour, its a fraud and a ripoff of the taxpayers to pay more than that. What liberals seem to ignore is that forcing a wage to be more than a true market woudl bear means that someone ELSE gets the shaft and gets LESS than the market would have otherwise borne ... or gets nothing at all as they are unemployed. If forcing people to be paid above what the market will bear is so great, why not just pay everyone a thousand dollars an hour? Why stop there? Why not two thousand?
