May 10, 2012

The day after Obama evolved, WaPo rolls out a Romney-bullied-a-gay-guy story.

This supposedly happened in high school in 1965:
John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection....

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another....
Romney declined an interview, and a spokeswoman said "The stories of fifty years ago seem exaggerated and off base and Governor Romney has no memory of participating in these incidents."

Another story:
In an English class, Gary Hummel, who was a closeted gay student at the time, recalled that his efforts to speak out in class were punctuated with Romney shouting, “Atta girl!” In the culture of that time and place, that was not entirely out of the norm. Hummel recalled some teachers using similar language.
ADDED: Obama bullied a black girl:

Her name was Coretta, and before my arrival she had been the only black person in our grade. She was plump and dark and didn’t seem to have many friends. From the first day, we avoided each other but watched from a distance, as if direct contact would only remind us more keenly of our isolation.

Finally, during recess one hot, cloudless day, we found ourselves occupying the same corner of the playground. I don’t remember what we said to each other, but I remember that suddenly she was chasing me around the jungle gyms and swings. She was laughing brightly, and I teased her and dodged this way and that, until she finally caught me and we fell to the ground breathless. When I looked up, I saw a group of children, faceless before the glare of the sun, pointing down at us.

“Coretta has a boyfriend! Coretta has a boyfriend!”

The chants grew louder as a few more kids circled us.

“She’s not my g-girlfriend,” I stammered. I looked to Coretta for some assistance, but she just stood there looking down at the ground. “Coretta’s got a boyfriend! Why don’t you kiss her, mister boyfriend?”

“I’m not her boyfriend!” I shouted. I ran up to Coretta and gave her a slight shove; she staggered back and looked up at me, but still said nothing. “Leave me alone!” I shouted again. And suddenly Coretta was running, faster and faster, until she disappeared from sight. Appreciative laughs rose around me. Then the bell rang, and the teachers appeared to round us back into class.
"Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance."

UPDATE: Romney apologizes:
"I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended ... obviously I apologize," Romney said on Kilmeade & Friends, a radio show....

"I don't remember that incident and I'll tell you I certainly don't believe that I ... thought the fellow was homosexual," Romney said. "That was the furthest thing from my mind back in the 1960s, so that was not the case."

Never waste a good crisis, right?

I wonder, Obama is evolving from what to what?

Okay, so we're gonna hear Romney grade school stories now, eh? So when do we get Obama's high school and college transcripts, or at least some stories of his hijinks and depredations?

Well, well, well. Isn't that convenient? Just when Little Black Jesus has made it OK to be gay, along comes a handful of recovered memories of mean ol' Mitt Romney who wants to shove them right back into the closet (after cutting their hair, of course).

Cue Hat's tiresome anti-Mormon screed in 3 - 2- 1. . .

I assume the fear is that President Romney might mandate crew cuts for all males.

I've also heard, from unnamed sources, that in second grade, he pulled the pigtails of the girl seated in front of him -- her eyes welling with tears. The War on Women was being waged even then.

It was a great country while it lasted.

As Matthew Sablan noted in an earlier post, "Conveniently, the victim died in 2004, and one of the major sources for the story was a member of the Obama campaign in 2008."

We have $15,800,000,000,000 already borrowed, with another $100,000,000,000,000 in unfunded liabilities in Big Entitlement. We have issues with Iran wanting to come up wih a Final Solution to Israel. We have energy issues that could plague the world wide economy for decades.

And what do the Democrats want to run for office on? "Free" birth control for women (but not men) and some alleged story about some low-key bullying that may have occured 50 years ago.

yashu said...

Hey, didn't that (almost) happen in season 2 of Top Chef? The bullying of Marcel.

Oh for effing Christ's sake.

THIS is what we are going to focus on? The country is in an economic melt down. Unemployment is higher than it has ever been. Chinese companies are taking over US Banks. Our military is shrinking. Manufacturing is almost non existent. Oil and Gas and Coal are going through the roof because of Obama's policies. Food is costing more and more every day. People can't afford to fill their gas tanks, buy groceries, pay their rent or mortgage........

And we want to discuss whether Romney was a big meanie to some faggot back in grade school?

Really?

FOCUS PEOPLE.

Matt Sablan said...

One key point: one of the people involved in this story used to work for the Obama campaign, the alleged victim Lauber never mentioned it to his family (he is dead now, so no comment). Not only that, but it seems like a scene out of a movie, as opposed to a scene out of real life. Or from a Stephen King book, like Dream Chaser.

We only just found out the last couple weeks about Obama eating dogs and it was in his best selling never read book. No no, there isn't any liberal bias. The new media is a big help in countering liberal MSM. The liberal media will not be able to save Obama from defeat in Nov.

The stories are credible and do not reflect well on Romney. On the other hand, the fact that they are coming to light at just this particular moment inspires a certain amount of cynicism about the Obama campaign and its friends in the media.

Lauber is a real person, who according to his sisters, did come out of the closet sometime after high school. It's amazing that he never thought to tell the story while he was alive, and it had to fall on Romney's old friends, at least some of whom are now his political opponents, to share the story.

And here's another Romney story from VFR:

Kristor writes:

Whatever else we might say about Romney as a politician, he is admirable as a man. The facts adduced below make it seem highly unlikely to me that Romney is seeking the Presidency in order to compensate for some deficit he feels in himself, or to stroke his ego, or to sate some selfish urge. This bodes well.
Quoting from an email sent to me by a correspondent:

On Romney’s character….

In July 1996, the 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner at Bain Capital, disappeared in New York City. She had attended a “rave” party and gotten high on ecstasy. Three days later, her distraught father had not been able to find her.

When he learned of this, as CEO of Bain Capital, Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York on a chartered airplane to help find Gay’s daughter.
Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriott and hired a private detective firm to assist with the search. He established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the NYPD, and went through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York, and asked them to help find his friend’s missing daughter.

Romney’s accountants at Price Waterhouse Cooper put up posters on Street poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy owned by Bain put fliers in the bag of every shopper. Romney and the other Bain employees scoured every part of New York and talked with everyone they could: prostitutes, drug addicts, anyone.

That day, their hunt made the evening news, which featured photos of the girl and the Bain employees searching for her.

As a result, a teenaged boy phoned in, asked if there was a reward, and then hung up abruptly.

The NYPD traced the call to a home in New Jersey, where they found the girl in the basement, shivering and experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a massive ecstasy dose. Doctors later said the girl might not have survived another day.

Romney’s former partner credits Mitt Romney with saving his daughter’s life, saying it was the most amazing thing, and he’d never forget for the rest of his life.

Many people are unaware of the fact that Romney was asked by his old employer, Bill Bain, to come back to Bain & Company as CEO and rescue the firm from bankruptcy. Romney left Bain Capital to work at Bain & Company for an annual salary of one dollar.

When Romney went to the rescue of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, he accepted no salary for three years, and would not use an expense account.

He also accepted no salary as Governor of Massachusetts.

Character counts—and yes, it’s worth reading again!

You can verify the story at Snopes.com.

Prolly be page 1 on the Obama Post tomorrow.

Whew, the kids I bullied as a kid turned out to be straight, likewise for the kids who bullied me.

It sounds like it was about hair conformity, not "presumed" sexuality.

But who is still bullying people in the manner that actually drummed Lauber out of school.

After the incident, Lauber seemed to disappear. He returned days later with his shortened hair back to its natural brown. He finished the year, but ultimately left the school before graduation — thrown out for smoking a cigarette.

Why, if you weren't reading too closely, that would sound like he was involved in the incident!

The WaPo's handling of this is shameful.

Back in 1965, it was a completely different world. Gays were deeep in the closet, had zero impact on the culture, and most of us in high school had literally no awareness of gays, they just weren't part of our world. I don't know if this incident happened or if it happened as reported but I think it is unlikely that Mitt realized that this particular deeply closeted classmate was gay.

Looks like Wapo is going the NYT route, sacrificing credibility to do election year propagandizing.

I'm not being snarky. It's a real question. I was born in '64 so I was a year old when this supposedly happened.

I can easily believe that a boy or a boy and his friends would not get kicked out of school for fighting. They might get in trouble, but boys fighting wasn't seen as the horror it is today. You were expected to work it out, get your big brother to clobber the miscreants, or show you how to throw a punch, something like that.

Also, calling a boy a girl has a long history of being the insult of choice, the same way that your DI calls you all "ladies". It's not an insult to gay men. It's an insult to *women*.

But smoking? Depends on where, and I'm guessing this wasn't a public school, but I know a girl my own age who lost a whole pay-grade for smoking at basic training. It's the context as much as the offense, of course, but why would it be hard to believe that a boy would get expelled for getting caught smoking?

Interesting(at least to me) was that studying the story of Paul, I grew disenchanted with Pauline Christianity. I think there is much good to come from Paul and his descendents, but now I question whether we as Christians, and as a Catholic specifically, didn't lose something when Paul became the leader of the church.

Those studying biblical history know that James, who was Jesus' brother was the first Bishop of Jerusalem. This post eventually evolved into the Pope of the Catholic church.

But before that, the Jews revolted, in the year 77 a.d. As punishment, the Romans exiled all the Jews from Judea. Paul, had been wandering the countryside preaching that Jesus was for gentiles too.(Paul was a gentile). He had been driven out of Judea by the church Jesus had established, for being an apostate. The Romans looked around, found this hermit preaching peace and love to anyone that would listen to him, and set him on James' throne(James had died, by either accident, or Roman/Jewish assassination). By the time the Jews were finally allowed back into the city, Pauline Christianity was a thriving church under Roman protection. There was little they could do until they got their independence.

I cut corners but basically that's the story. It is fascinating to delve deeper into it though.

We had protections against sexual orientation since 1988 in Massachusetts, and even those like myself in Massachusetts who disagree with gay marriage, we are pretty supportive of protections for gays.

My support for marriage isn't based on hatred, but rather a value in both a mother and father. Too much fatherless, and I wish public policy would help promote stability 'for the sake of the children'. It doesn't mean there aren't legal issues to address the legal needs of non-marital relationships, I wished we created a strong form of domestic partnership laws open to adult relationships, while making marriage stronger for children.

Re: the latest incident, it is all about gay fund raising lagging for the dems. The gays and other dems have been demanding that Obama do something, anything on the gay front before they would loosen the purse strings.

In response, you see this carefully orchestrated Obama/Biden/JournoList response. First Biden tests the waters with his "slip of the tongue". They do it with Biden because he screws up so much that it gives them deniability in case the reaction was really bad.

Next Obama realizes that he has "evolved". Next the dem media propagandists (aka journolisters) get together and manufacture an incident from Mitt's teenage years that "proves" Mitt is anti gay. It is most probable that, if the incident happened at all, Mitt had no idea the deeply closeted kid was gay but no matter.

All of this is timed to occur just before the dems do major fund raisers with the gays this weekend. So all of this BS is just about fund raising from a particular dem Privileged Interest Group (PIG).

It is way past time to stop calling these frauds news people, they are simply dem media propagandists.

The Gospels are good reads about what Jesus did, but Christian doctrine today is actually taken from Paul's gospel that he says he received as a revelation directly from the ascended Jesus in a heavenly vision.

Paul's epistles are an account of Paul's gospel of grace through faith and and trust in being lead by the Holy Spirit rather than keeping Law. That made the legalists in Jerusalem his enemy, and they did try to kill him many times for "teaching against the Torah of Moses."

Paul was feisty enough to teach that Christians are no longer under the law of Moses, and that all accusations of violating Moses' law of sin and death have been nailed to the cross of Jesus and settled there forever by faith in the sacrificial death of the Lamb of God who was dead and buried and then raised from the dead three days later as the sign that we are our justified.

Titus: Not if it didn't happen. And, seeing as the WaPo has been found lying about one part of the story, it very well could have been embellished or fabricated. They didn't even need to lie about White; they could have left his comment out entirely and not hurt their story. They included the lie because White is the guy who brought the Romneys together, so they wanted to use someone who appears friendly to Romney to make it more sinister.

Too bad they lied.

Two points --

1. The Obama story isn't really comparable, because that's kind of Obama getting bullied into treating the girl poorly.

2. I love that Romney says "fellow."

Romney didn't remember it but he does remember that he didn't think the kid was gay because back then that wasn't talked about.

So he doesn't remember this but remembers that he didn't think the kid was gay.

Nice, and Althouse is still sucking his cock.

You know Romney will be better for gays then Teddy Kennedy....but his views haven't changed. He is really such a liar and a really bad politician. And I voted for him for governor of Mass but every one of his views have changed since then and will continue to change to fit whatever audience, state or zip code. At least Rick Santorum was sincere.

Lovely.

How does any of that "advice" translate to a vote for Barack Obama?

At this point you're just asking people to stay home.

I believe Tom Maguire at JOM had link a week ago that debunked the Obama story in Dreams. The only black girl in the school said it didn't happen to her. Another Ayers concoction, like the shifting tidal currents.
