Retweet the Right Thing.

Next time Spike "Do The Right Thing" Lee does racial politics on Twitter, perhaps he'll be a little more more circumspect. He was certainly clever to settle quickly with that elderly couple who fell victim to his impetuousness:
Elaine and David McClain are in their 70s and say they have a son named William George Zimmerman, who lived in their Sanford area home in the mid-1990s. They say he is no relation to 28-year-old George Zimmerman, who killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26....

“At this point in time, we have come to an agreement with Spike Lee and his attorneys, and at this point, the matter is fully resolved,” Morgan said. “Spike has agreed to compensate the McClains for their loss and for the disruption into their lives. He’s taken full responsibility.”....

“He was really kind,” Elaine McClain said. “And when he called us, you could just tell he really felt bad about it. And it was just a slip, and I just know that he really, really has been concerned.”
Yeah, it was just a slip. He intended to send the lynch mob to the other George Zimmerman's house. Did he apologize for that? And what did the McClain's get out of Lee other than an apology? Did he buy them a new house at a new address? What's the market value of their old house, now that the address is out there in digital-vigilante-o-sphere?

Meanwhile, the street address of the parents of the real George Zimmerman is out there. Roseanne Barr retweeted it, then took it down — because she was criticized. She said that that at first she thought it “was good to let ppl know that no one can hide anymore.” Since she needs to be popular and she got some pushback, she stepped back and tweeted as if she'd reached a higher level of morality: “But vigilante-ism is what killed Trayvon. I don’t support that.” But she kept her moral understanding fuzzy: “If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll rt his address again... maybe go 2 his house myself.”

As noted at the Cold Fury blog, sure, Spike, now you apologize, you lousy, stinking, racist prick. Now that it looks like there's going to be a real price exacted for your mindless hate.

Either the Zimmermans are better people than I am or couldn't afford a real ballbusting lawyer. I'd have sued the wee auteur so far into bankruptcy he wouldn't be able to afford to direct the remake of 2 Girls 1 Cup.

As far as the loathsome why-aren't-your-15-minutes-of-fame-over Barr is concerned, I hope she does go to the real Zimmerman's house. No jury in the land would convict him if he filled her worthless ass with lead.

Used to be that our so-called betters were taught something called noblesse oblige, the proper way for the noble of birth to behave around the common people. The USA doesn't have hereditary nobility, of course, but our celebrities, the famous, the infamous and the notorious, haven't learned that, since most of them came from common stock themselves. Perhaps we need to have schools for the nouveau famous to learn celeb oblige, the main lesson taught not to shit on the peasants via Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Even if I were sure what happened either way, **and I sure as hell am not,** I can't imagine publishing an address in that fashion. It completely blows me away that anyone thinks that's appropriate, or even--God forbid--useful.

Also, personally, the whole notion of it's "good to let [people] know that no one can hide anymore" strikes me as very chilling and even--you'll pardon the chose of term--creepy.

If THIS is a crime...soliciting kidnapping.

Then why are the New Black Panthers not being indicted for doing exactly the same thing regarding Zimmerman. They are doing it publicly, nationally and with a big reward. They are soliciting the kidnapping of Zimmerman.

Of course, we know the answer to that question. The New Black Panthers will never be investigated as long as their 'bros are in charge of the Justice System (there is a joke) and hold the Presidency.

Maybe they can threaten to burn down Detroit or something if they don't get their way....oh....wait.....

When someone named Zimmerman, no matter who they are, gets killed because of the mad media feeding frenzy, the irresponsible tweets by twits, and the price on their head which is a solicitation for kidnapping and murder......just who is going to be charged?

No one.

We are so screwed. And people wonder why gun sales and ammo sales are skyrocketing. The handwriting is on the wall for those who want to just see.

I have a question that is somewhat off topic, but the more relevant Zimmerman post is getting pretty far down the page so I'll try.

Is it a point in Zimmerman's defense that he fired only one shot?

Yes, I know that one shot killed Martin, but in the split second in which Zimmerman had to decide whether or not to pull the trigger again he had no way of knowing that.

Could this could be used as evidence that he had a defensive mindset when he chose to use the gun which would support his version of events (to the extent that we know his version)?

Just asking.

Oh, and "aridog", Ms Fluke's libido had absolutely nothing to do with her testimony before Congress, or her desire for insurance to cover female birth control. If you had actually heard what she was saying, it was that she has friends who use birth control for MEDICAL purposes. In fact, aridog, there are many women who use birth controll pills for purposes other than satisfying their scary female libidos. Ms Fluke was pointing out that students, who are usually quite poor, can't always afford the pill. And many of them use it to quell long and painful periods and for other medical reasons as well. In fact, the reason all women use birth control absolutely does not have anything to do with you and Rush's unhealthily prurient interest in their sex lives. So no, Ms Fluke doesn't want YOU to pay for her birth control. She wants her health insurance plan to pay for it. But I'm sure you'd rather sit around and repeat Rush's brain-dead talking points all day, so by all means, continue.

Perhaps Zimmerman should offer himself up as a sacrifice, to wash clean the sins of whitey. Maybe let an angry, jeering mob of randomly-selected black people and celebrities whip him as he drags a couple of wooden beams up a hill somewhere, then let Sharpton nail him to it and have him hoisted up in the sun so that everyone can stab him and feed him vinegar while he slowly dies.

Meanwhile, Obama can be washing his hands somewhere.

That, along with Martin's killing, ought to satisfy the blood lust of our failing empire for a little while.

Until all that happens, perhaps we can tide ourselves over by throwing a few more Zimmermans to the lions, while black bodies, innocent and otherwise, pile up out of view.

Rose said...

He was so nice, paid them off after they lawyered up - that DOES NOT answer the other question -

And WHERE is the race-baiting President of this nation? Calming the waters? NOT. Tamping down the rhetoric? NOT.

No dissonance there for ya. Didn't think so. Insurance companies print money, right?

PS: I'm a guy who pays for health insurance, which includes BC pills for a $5 co-pay for those, presumably female, who need them for any reason. My premiums include that benefit. I don't begrudge it ... for one reason, among many, that I might have prostate issues someday and women's premiums will be part of what supports that. What I do object to is Ms Fluke's demand that this be "free" issue ... when nothing is "free" and any 3rd grader should know that.

Second, no it had NOTHING to do with using birth control for medical reasons. Catholic health organizations already offer this for patients who have heavy periods, for example. So read your talking points again and see if you've missed something.

Third, and most important: demanding that Catholic health organizations pay for birth control takes religious freedom away from such organizations. This mob-justice thinking by some on the left reminded me of "The Satanic Verses" episode. This is from Wikipedia:

"Rushdie has never been physically harmed for the book, but others associated with it have suffered violent attacks. Hitoshi Igarashi, its Japanese translator, was stabbed to death on 11 July 1991; Ettore Capriolo, the Italian translator, was seriously injured in a stabbing the same month[13]; William Nygaard, the publisher in Norway, survived an attempted assassination in Oslo in October 1993, and Aziz Nesin, the Turkish translator, was the intended target in the events that led to the Sivas massacre on 2 July 1993 in Sivas, Turkey, which resulted in the deaths of 37 people.[14] Individual purchasers of the book have not been harmed. The only nation with a predominantly Muslim population where the novel remains legal is Turkey."

That is the reality of mob rule.

Spike Lee should apologize to civilized society, as should Roseanne Barr. I often disagree with Lee but always wanted to believe he was a person who acted in good faith. Roseanne Barr, not so much. It would appear I gave Mr. Lee too much credit.

Rob said...

If it is not clear, I would be as disgusted with Lee if he had the correct address. Pointing the mob in the correct direction is to be part of the mob.

Fumbletino: Violence from the right? Hmmm. Let's see. We've got Abraham Lincoln, Malcolm X, MLK, JFK, RFK . . .

Man, you are one ignorant fellow.

Lincoln, a Republican, was killed by Booth, a Democrat and an actor to boot. Lincoln was a conservative--as in conserve the Union. Booth and his democratic fellows were radical traitors.

Malcolm X was killed by other Black Muslims in a power struggle.

Dr. King was killed by James Earl Ray (unless you believe that some phantom guy named Raoul actually fired the shot with a gun that Ray provided.) Ray was a racist, but he had no history of political activity or even political beliefs. He was neither right not left wing, just a petty criminal and escaped convict who decided that he could become someone by killing an important man. You could latch on to one of the unproven conspiracy theories, but these lead mainly to Fidel Castro (communist), Lyndon Johnson (liberal democrat) and the KKK (mostly disgruntled democrats who thought the party was betraying them.)

Bobby Kennedy was killed by a Palestinian with a hatred of Jews and of Kennedy for assisting Israel.

JFK was killed by a pissant little communist.

Your statement is almost laughable, except that there are millions of people as ignorant as you who also believe that the "right wing" engineered these killings.

Another shocking fact: The Democratic party is the organization that defended slavery and then instituted Jim Crow and segregation to keep blacks from their rights for another 100 years. Democrats opposed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments and far more democrats that Republicans voted against the civil rights laws of the 1950's and 1960's.

But, wait. Baxter is black also. Imagine that. A black student government president at a major southern univeristy in 1970. A black man being treated fairly under the law by southern policemen. But, a bunch of left wing hate mongers can't look at the reality of the world today, or yesterday. Racism today is promoted by leftwingers to maintain a power base and create division to their own advantage. And some of us grew up after all the civil rights legislation had been passed and the klan was a teensy fringe group. We were raised on MLK's vision, living in harmony.

Then we watched riots in LA where people were killed for the crime of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, heavy gang violence, and a bunch of people cheering as a murderer got off scot free because he was the same skin color as they were (and watched as he wrote a book saying he totally did it, hahahaha).

We watched all sorts of things that don't live up to the vision we were fed as children and now we're watching this, which is not about the facts. We are watching people actively trying to incite a race war! This is nuts.

There are some things here all logical people can agree on.

No one "knows" what happened between G. Zimmerman, and T.Martin. We have suspicions, ideas, and beliefs, but absolutely no 1st hand knowledge.

We should wait for any police investigation is over before rushing to judgement. Afterwards, depending on your views of the police, your beliefs will either be vindicated or not, either way, some are still going to be angry.

President Obama could have quelled any civil unrest by saying "We don't know. Let the police handle it". He didn't. Why is open to conjecture, but the results are what counts, and what he said didn't help matters.(truly, they didn't hurt that much either) As we are constantly reminded by the bumper stickers "if you ain't part of the solution, you're part of the problem"

Spike Lee didn't help the matter either, and tweeting the address of innocent people to a mob should be a crime. Even if it were Zimmerman's address, that is trying to abet a lynching/kidnapping/murder/whatever.

Roseanne, is just the latest to jump up and down shouting "ME TOO! MEEE TOOO!!" As such shes getting what she sows, nothing.

Any mob action is a break down of our civilization, and as such, should be frowned upon by all right thinking people.

But I predict that what happened in Florida wont stay in Florida. The rest of us will get to see who wins the race war the hard cases are determined to start.

I'm late to the party here but what makes Do the Right Thing a great movie that holds up is that it is a tragedy. Everyone in the movie does the wrong thing.

The police shouldn't have killed Radio Raheem. Sal shouldn't have been such a blowhard and he should have just put up pictures of black people because, after all, it was black people giving him money. Mookie shouldn't have started the riot. Even the white guy wearing the Bird jersey should have thought about what he was doing in that neighborhood.

So, it's kind of poetic -- not to say ironic -- that a guy who made great art about people doing the wrong thing could have done the wrong thing himself in such a racially charged situation.

Fen said...

Nothing wrong with that at all.

But from here, its sounds like you want to jail Zimmerman because the racist mob is threatening violence. That's an entirely different motive.

Too bad the unfortunate couple bought/were bought out by "Spike"'s apology/$$$...after they had contacted an attorney. How great would it have been if they had demanded he publicly apologize for tweeting/inciting a mob with someone's address to begin with.

Who knows what specifically happened to cause the escalation to a shooting.
But once it becomes a national powder keg, what do we make of the president's role/abdication?
I've heard people refer to Obama as a peacemaker, a healer. Really?
What do they think noting his non-existent son would look like Trayvon was supposed to convey?
Stop.
Any number of "fatherly" statements of empathy or concern could have been made without reference to his well known physical attributes. There was no need to personalize it..especially based on looks...especially in an already racially charged situation.
Instead of stating the obvious and giving the not so subtle subtle nod to presumed racism in the incident, when not necessary...How about stepping forward and telling the country that despite what NBP say, the law applies to all and there will be no allowance for bounties or any other vigilante behavior...including tweeting to incite violence.
That's what a peace maker, especially the "first black" (or as NYT might say white black) president would be wise to do. Holder would logically play a role but note how laughable this reasonable approach seems with the current players.
As it is, his silence is likely to be viewed as tacit approval.
That's no peacemaker. That's Obama...weighing in prematurely..and when it matters..voting present...or rather, absent.
To further explore this, imagine if the KKK had publicly declared a bounty/posse on a black person involved in a similar situation. There would be a HUGE clamoring for the president to say something and for DOJ to crack down.

See, this is why I *didn't* like that movie -- because that's the impression we're supposed to be left with.

But Sal did nothing wrong. His big crime was running his restaurant the way he wanted to run it. For this, he lost his livelihood. Which basically sent the message: whatever you do, don't live around poor black Americans. They're insane.

I dunno, I had a very different experience growing up in the south. The older generations were pretty bitter towards each other, but the younger folks got along well. There was none of that "you're in a [race] area, you do things the [race] way" mentality anymore. Heck, even interracial couples weren't all that unusual anymore.

I suggest you watch Jimmy Stewart in Anatomy of a Murder. Forget all you saw in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Zimmerman will be fine and get rich writing a book after a possible few months served and some non-reporting probation.

But we are stuck with vigilantism begatting vigilantism. Men like Spike Lee could defuse this locked up hold if honesty is tried in place of stone walling.

Oh yeah, the Police Chief left town and delegated his job, but not his pay to someone else unknown who has so far refused to speak to the public which noticed that it has been abandoned to the vigilantes.

You of all people should understand repentance and forgiveness is what is needed to cut the ground out from under the brayers for blood that are now bootstrapped into attention by a vacancy at the top. They will take the job opening if no one else has the courage to take it.

In honor of Zimmerman I have been watching The Brave One as I type this. Jodi Foster had the courage to take the job the police would not do.

But there seems to be considerable misunderstandings among people here who normally comment in good faith and intelligently. It is too bad that we again find ourselves rent by arguments of race disguised as detective work or stupid gossip about which none of us know anything beyond our own strong prejudices. I will note that many who worked in civil rights in those days are bitterly disappointed at the left's cynical use of race to gain and hold power and more so at the continued gullibility of many in the black community and, of course, in the press. And I guess it's irrelevant that Zimmerman is a Democrat, right?

If you are afraid of the "new" Black Panthers or Spike Lee's vigilante posse that is because you enjoy being afraid of Scary Black Men. Please feel free to enjoy your fake victimhood, but don't pretend that it has any basis in reality.

The Panthers put a bounty on Zimmerman's head. Lee gave out what he thought was his address to get him killed.

Rush does not and did not care about her love life. She wanted US to pay for it. Screw that. It's not a legitimate use of taxpayers money

Lee is a great opportunity for us to re-start commnnications that have recently been lost behind a wall of denial that went up in the name of fighting race hustlers. All of this happened at The Zimmerman family's suggestion that they were the ones under attack and we owed them solidarity against a black hoard.

Celebrities tweeted addresses they thought was theirs to the mob. The Panthers have a bounty. NBC on-air personality Sharpton is basically threatening riots.

Yes, they don't have a black mob against them.

BTW, Hispanics, note how quickly the Democrats will worry about you. Republicans don't like bad immigration policy. Democrats, apparently, will allow lynch mobs against you...then again, it is a Democratic tradition.

He has a traditional morality and he identifies good where it is found and evil where it is found.

He tweeted the wrong address in the hopes of the mob getting to him.

Where the hell is his morality?

Screw Lee. I hope the mob decides to turn on him next.

We have seen first hand the advances in race relations and know how little it might take to undo what has been achieved.

If it requires allowing a mob to run things regularly to keep the peace, then who gives a damn about race relations? I'd rather have horrendous racial hatred then succumbing to mob rule.

If the Justice system follows its own laws and re-enters the covere up of the stupid shooting death of Trayvon, then there would be no braying for blood by Panthers of either colors.

So, again, if the system doesn't do what the mob wants --- then the mob is JUSTIFIED?

Is that REALLY what you wish to argue here?

Heh. I remember saying (though only to myself) the same exact thing about you, dear Pogo, starting something like 4 or so, give or take, years ago.

Living through life is a revelatory thing. It's what people experience and do, friend.
