"His focus on the deficit, and his more general critique of an out-of-touch Republican candidate and establishment, got him 19 million votes—despite a ridiculous performance as a candidate."
I take no comfort in knowing we've had decisive masses of stupid voters before Obama descended from the back benches of the Illinois State Senate riding his magic unicorn.
Kristol's point about not dismissing threats out of hand (the fact that Georgette Mossbacher is a big backer of his should remind him constantly) is a good one, but I have to agree 100% with Bob.
If anyone is going to be sullen it's going to be Captain Tin Foil.

Newt has already displayed his propensity to whine. I thought he was damaged goods when he originally announced and I've never wavered from that. Frankly, I was surprised he managed to survive despite that big un-assing of staffers last year.
It was fun in 1992, when I was in the Bush White House, having our allies ridicule arguments, first by Pat Buchanan and then by Perot, as silly and uninformed...
No. Newt is crazy. That's the clincal explanation and the only one that draws from the entire record.
So many love to push that meme - the "crazy" man who's done more for the conservative movement, as far as real-world political accomplishments, than all of his challengers combined.

I've tended to agree with that, but notice that every time Paul is asked if he'd run third party, he denies it.

Not at all. He's merely a rank opportunist and hypocrite, a fraud, as are so so many of his peers.
When he announced he was running in the primary, who was it that said he was a giant joke and there was no reason to take him seriously and that it spoke poorly of the Republican party that he was doing so well?

I take Who Are The People Who Thought Joe Biden And Howard Dean Were Viable for $600, Alex, er, Andy.
There is a good chance that Newt will go the third party route. By now he must have burned all his bridges with the GOP. He has at least one wealthy backer. He is a sore loser. The media will encourage him because they love controversy and will secretly want 0bama to be reelected.
A big reason Bush the Elder lost in 1992 was his imperious disregard for the fiscal conservatives who defected to Perot seeking a budget-balancer. Bush went back on his 'no new taxes' pledge without pushing for real spending cuts (remember, we were already on the 'baseline budget' facade of naming reductions in increases as cuts) or even offering up a justification or apology to his own supporters.

Newt isn't Perot. Ron Paul is. They even share initials!

Pity people can't learn.

Later when Clinton was trying to get NAFTA through.. who can ever forget Gore calling Rush a distinguished American?

Always cause for concern with a politician ;)

If Newt Is Perot . . .
. . . then Romney should avoid being Bush.
Being Bush is fine with me; just don't be Dole.
Being Bush is emphatically not fine.
