But he died. A stroke has downed the "Dear Leader," at the age of 69.
The death triad of Christopher Hitchens and Vaclav Havel deserved at better third, but... good riddance.
ADDED: "I’d like to think God let Havel and Hitchens pick the third." That's a great way to make sense of the bizarre triad. And I like the unstated assumption that God would especially love that big old atheist Hitchens.

Hey lets not be disrespectful of the dead!
And who are you to criticize Kim? What country were you ever a dictator of? You're just envious. He was beloved by millions.
First Bin Laden and now Kim Jong.
Obama is on a roll!
*trying hard to keep a straight face*
WOOT! One more stalinista down. Fidel next. -cp
wv: acopa. cabana.
I'm always respectful of the newly dead, even when they're murderous, tyrannical dictators.
'Cause I have good manners.
And I'm stupid.
I wonder if his kids mourn his passing. I hope so. Someone should. I don't.
I hope his son is a step in the right direction for North Korea.
He died before Obama got a chance to apologize.
hilariously evil to the end, the official cause of his death is "mental and physical overwork".
What's up with North Korean youth? Shouldn't one of these kids rebel against their parents? You know, really disappoint them and not become a despicable murderous fool of a dictator who starves his people to death while sipping campaign.
What North Korea needs more than anything else is...
Rock N Roll.
Didn't even know he was ill?
ugh.
He'd been sick for some time. Interesting you mention the "death triad." They may come in threes, but not necessarily congruently.
One of his kids did rebel: an older son who was caught trying to sneak into Japan to visit Disneyland. Said son has now been passed over for the succession.
Il ill? Who knew?
Awesomest ever?
Lots of ways to play the three guys.
There's Larry, Moe, and Curly.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Or FMK, for those inclined to play that game.
There's only one important question: can Parker and Stone work this into the next episode of South Park?
Goodbye to the world's greatest golfer.
Okay, got you linked. Kim's son, Kim Jong Eun, can be seen at the video clip at the post: 'North Korea's Kim Jong Il Has Died'.
Obama destroyed him with his mind.
But that is so weird because Kim Jung deux came before Kim Jung un. They do everything backwards over there innit.
* L fingers frame air-picture *
Picture it: Three portraits. Stacked. All the same guy.
Kim Jung Well
Kim Jung Il
Kim Jung Dead
"First Bin Laden and now Kim Jong.
Obama is on a roll!"
If Ahmadinejad kicks the bucket, I'll vote for Obama.
"Kim Jong-il died of physical fatigue during a train ride."
Death in the socialist paradise.
Obama is the closest we ever came to having our own Jong type figure. If it wasn't for that damned Faux News and talk radio, we could have pulled it off.
""Kim Jong-il died of physical fatigue during a train ride.""
Understandable, since they copied the train design from a Flintstones episode.
May he rot in the lowest plane of hell for all eternity, where whatever soul he has is being being tortured for all eternity. Good riddance to that rancid piece of human shit.
What a wretch. There's a guy at the casino I frequent who looks just like Kim jong-il. Almost identical. Same style of glasses, too, but favors knit sweaters to the khaki jumpsuit. I may snap a picture of him to get the conspiracy theories going. "Faked his death so he could expatriate to the US and play Texas hold 'em."
I'm sure President Golfpants will wish the new North Korean leader well during this difficult time
>I hope his son is a step in the right direction for North Korea.
in the same sense Kruschev was a step in the right direction after Stalin
Really North Korea is the last bastion of communist ridiculousness. Even Cuba is moving toward markets, slowly.
The fascinating thing to me has always been how people can continue with these flawed economic systems after they so clearly don't work. It makes sense to me that East Asia would be the last holdout because of the common tactic there of human leaders taking the mantle of gods. But that's a treatise I won't get into.
The good news is that this kid was educated at a Swiss boarding school. Something good and market-like may have rubbed off. The bad news is that he will rule under a regent for a long time, possibly forever. But since a regent isn't a god...
P.S.: Khrushchev was most certainly a positive step for the USSR. The absurd and constant murdering was greatly, greatly reduced.
I hope his son is a step in the right direction for North Korea.
All evidence says probably not. Kim Jong Il's personal chef claims he's "exactly like his father" and "He has superb physical gifts, is a big drinker and never admits defeat."
Drunken stubborn guy... never good in a leader.
Surely you knew he was ill? His health has been a concern for several years because of the instability that will likely follow. Over a year ago, knowing that he was going to soon die, he named his young son as successor. This could become very dangerous.
Death has been waiting for him to finish just as it waited for Hitchens and Havel.
Havel was a truly great man who left behind a stable country and Eastern Europe. His words serve as an inspiration to dissidents throughout the world. May his memory some day serve them as a blessing.
Anyway, your quip have a typographical error.
>Drunken stubborn guy...never good in a leader.
I take it then, that you did not vote for President Grant.
Maybe Kim's passing relieves a teeny tiny bit of the sorrow we feel for the passing of Hitch and Havel.

What about Churchill?
The first three people to cease weeping wil be shot.
Mesquito wins!
Who will we send to the funeral to represent the US? Ron Paul?
How will OWS cope with the loss of such a passionate and prominent supporter of income equality?
I guess they have a kiddie table in the deepest pit of Hell.
Dissonant triad.
What a shame. When Castro goes tits up, the lefties around here will be inconsolable.
King Jong Il followed in the footsteps of his father Kim Il Sung. Kim Jong Il will be succeeded by his son, Kim Jong Un. And if Kim Jong Un dies in office, he’ll be succeeded by his younger brother, Kim Jong Deux. [Really, you should thank me -- I make the facile political jokes before you have to see them on late-night TV.)
Odd that Kim’s death happened at around the same time as that of Vaclav Havel, who deserves to be honored for his life as a dissident, playwright, poet, post-communist leader, and Zappa fan. While it’s already been speculated on this thread that Kim Jong-il has surely been committed to the fires of hell, one can only assume that Havel has been welcomed into the kingdom of heaven.
And if Christopher Hitchens ends up in either place, boy is he going to be pissed.
What struck a nerve with me were the interviews with the average N. Korean on the street.
One man's haunting plea and concern,"Dear Leader starved us like no else could. Who will starve us now, and if they do, will their starvation come close to the way Dear Leader did it?. What do I tell my one child? How will she understand Dear Leader will never again shoot 11 holes in one, I caanot talk more as my soul stings."
Bastard Jackals like this are worthy of whatever pain his sins have wrought him. Times 100.
Holiday Cheers!
"... King Jong Il followed in the footsteps of his father Kim Il Sung. Kim Jong Il will be succeeded by his son, Kim Jong Un. And if Kim Jong Un dies in office, he’ll be succeeded by his younger brother, Kim Jong Deux..."
Too soon.
What to sing at his funeral?
"I'm So Ronery".

While it is fashionable to demonize Amahdinejad as the unquestioned dictator of Iran, the truth is he is an elected President and most of the real power is with the Revolutionary Guard (Quds Force)and the clerics headed by Ayatollah Kameini. He goes, no real difference in Iran's anti-West posture and support of militant Islam.
Indeed, in some cases, Amahdinejad has been a check on the Quds Force.

The only people that really give a shit about Iran, militant or not, are the same types, like us, who are either news or political junkies. Those people know what DinnerJacket is.
It would seem from the giant dance videos that the North Koreans are having a blast. I loved this little piece of shaking rock edited to a series of NK military parades. We might as well pay tribute to a demi-god whose strange mind contributed to this bizarre aesthetic!

Josh Trevino’s tweet of the year: “I’d like to think God let Havel and Hitchens pick the third.”
Too soon.
Not soon enough!
Brilliant!
What could be better than taking one of the truly evil powers out with you?
Derek Hunter had the best tweet I've seen so far...
Well, now we know what God was busy doing in the 4th quarter of the Broncos/Patriots game. #KimJongIl
Shame on the world for letting this fuck stick live out his natural life.
If Ahmadinejad kicks the bucket, I'll vote for Obama.
The trifecta Gaddafi, Bin Laden, and Kim Jong-il i isn't good enough for you? Greedy 1% bastard.
Wow, evil dictators are dropping like flies with Obama at the helm.

That’s OK he’s supporting new ones popping up all the time, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and the “Reformer”-in-Chief in Damascus.

You mean Dubya set up Kim's death, too?
Wow, evil dictators are dropping like flies with Obama at the helm.
Obama probably had about as much to do wtih Il's death as OBL's. I wonder how many members of his own cabinet maneuvered events around Valerie Jarrett eventually forcing her to force POTUS to make the call this time.
"Wow, evil dictators are dropping like flies with Obama at the helm."
Confusing correlation with causation is sooo much fun...so, if, under the generous proposition the dairy cow has gotten laid twice since the Dali-Obama has been president, we can all see the dairy cow's sex life has improved 200% with Obama at the helm.
No wonder the dairy cow supports Obama sooo much.
The Heath Ledger predicted this.
What will Kim Jong-Il Looking At Things do?
My only reaction is Good Riddance to that twisted little runt, and I hope he's burning in hell.
Time to rent Team America: World Police!
Prayer Warriors team forces Christopher Hitchens through the pearly gates.
Ear plugs passed out to the angels while Hitchens adjusts.
Last seen sitting in the pose of The Thinker. Was I wrong all along?, he wonders. No, Christopher, you were not.
