"Hope is in the street not the White House."
"Who lied? Who died? Who pays? Who profits?"
"Birds not bombs."
"Corporations get handouts/We get shut out."
"Occupy the World."
"U.S. empire abroad requires austerity at home! Bring all troops & dollars home now."/"Still waiting to get trickled down on."
"Soon the poor will have nothing left to eat but the rich."
Following a man in a badger hat and rainbow fingerless gloves, a woman eats from a bag of popcorn:
"The world is a dangerous place to live... not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
"End the wars," a sign clothes-pinned onto a marijuana flag, held by a man wearing a "No more drug war" T-shirt.
"It's time for peace" (and also time for the Farmers' Market, which is going on at the Capitol Square at the same time the peace march arrives).

do these loony birds have a common theme? i for the life of me cant figure out who they are mad at!
Ever so groovy
There never seem to be any good-looking protesters in Madison. Turns out there's a reason.
So-- the people who do nothing about it should get dangerous?
Yup. They're always out there!
They were probably there, too, before the 1960's came up with "hippies."
Don't forget there was the Charleston. And, the "flappers" ... that came out of America before our grandparents! (Unless, like mine, your grandparents were so old they were born shortly after Lincoln was assassinated.)
So why should I be surprised that you can't get hippies to still come out. Isn't that what freedom is all about?
At least these days there's less smoking. This used to be so "open" ... hollywood stars were doing it in movies.
In fairness, Lily Cole and Kate Beckinsale could probably do better things with-- oh, never mind that . . . .
They all voted for Obama and they all will again. Some things are more important than peace.
A bunch of Stalin-worshiping commonists, IMHO...
Any patriotic American loves War. The desire to kill the enemy naturally pulses through their red-blooded veins. Causing death and destruction at the direction of our political Regime is our most important task as citizens.
Actually, I'd say that these people are more terrorists than commies. Like George W. Bush said, "If you aren't with us, you are with the terrorists." These people are clearly not with us.
Maybe tomorrow Scott Walker will order a drone attack to take them out? That will show the world that we don't tolerate Stalin-worshiping terrorists here in the good ole' U.S.A...
"Hope is in the streets , not the Whitehouse." J should be along any moment now ready to denounce the sign holder in question for not toeing the line in J's head.
Tea Party protesters looked every bit as loony to liberals as these protesters look to conservatives.
I would call them useless idiots but that might be an insult to actual idiots.
@ Ann - did you get the chance to ask the Einstein quoter what should be done to make the world a less dangerous place?
I see white people of varying ages, but mostly old.
Where did those hippie dippies get such a nice, large 48 star flag. Shouldn't it have 57 stars in their world?
I can see where this is going.
It's a return to the great "U.S. Out of North America" campaign.
@Althouse-
Despite the fact that the subjects are commie terrorists, these photos are exceptionally good. Much better than your usual standard. Carrot Man in the last one is particularly iconic, and your photo of him captures all the malevolent commie terrorist agrarianism that is the essence of Wisconsin. You could put that photo on the cover of your upcoming Madison photo-book, right under the title Midwesterners Who Love Stalin.
@ST--Phase One of that campaign appears to be underway.
wv: beart--Don't just make art...
Julius, what in the hell are you carrying on about?
Are you in the early stages of senility?
@Julius--I for one welcome your attempt at irony, but I haven't got a clue about what your point is. Do you claim that Althouse intentionally took pics only of unattractive people with stupid signs, while filtering out a crowd of generally thoughtful and attractive folks?
I think she's a skilled photographer, but not that good.
Nobody blamed Obama?
That's scary.
Is it time for another Kent State yet?
This is the sign that needs to be carried, but they can't admit to the elephant in the room.
I grew up outside the United States.
I went to Columbia and Harvard.
I've never held a real job in my life.
I have one of the largest private jets in the world waiting to take me wherever I want.
I play golf almost every weekend at some of the most exclusive resorts in the world.
When I retire, I'll make millions of dollars in speaking fees and millions more by serving on the boards of the corporations you are protesting.
My name is Barack Obama and I am the 1%.

Nobody blamed Obama?
If you do that, they put their fingers in their ears and go, "Lalalalalalalalala!!"
Where did those hippie dippies get such a nice, large 48 star flag.
Good catch!! Those went out over 50 years ago. A collector's item they ruined by sewing a pot patch on it.
Just in time for the mission in Uganda
They look like they've been wandering the back woods of WI for the last 40 years or so, suspended in time.
'Nam was the last time they felt so, so, ... relevant.
And I love the, "Who Lied, Who Died", nonsense. Give them a media lie and they'll be calling the people in uniform torturers and baby killers before you can take a breath.

As I was saying...
The lumpen coddled class. Forty years have I struggled in America...to push away from the table!
They look to me like a prettty average bunch of people taking a saturday off before they start work again on Monday.
Dont have many people of color in Madison: whats up with that? all I see are pasty saggy doughy white bread carrying signs.
"The world is a dangerous place to live... not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
Easy for you to say, Einstein.
In photo #5 the dude with the dog looks like V. I. Lenin.
"Dont have many people of color in Madison: whats up with that? "
Well, we did have Titus living here in Madison for a few month. Some find him colorful. But he moved back to Boston.
"Where did those hippie dippies get such a nice, large 48 star flag."
I remember when that was the flag. The stars all lined up. They had to stagger the lines when Alaska and Hawaii came in. As a kid, that bothered me, wrecking the clarity of the design like that. It was some compensation that 50 is such a nice round number.
Occupy the Pizza World?
Sure, they hate war, but how do they feel about kinetic military activity?
I believe there are 3 Air Force One's, several Air Force Two's, plus the back-up fleet of C-5's and C-17's to carry the bulletproof SUV's, and sometimes a wing of F-16's to go with it all.
The political parties are starting to feel small. How can they encompass individuals who no longer share their two-dimensional view of the world?
People have to unite even as they work out their differences and compete for their individual concerns. That's something the parties and the people who can't see beyond the party dogmas don't do well - instill a sense of unity.
And in other news from 1967, Elvis and Priscilla are married in Las Vegas!

All we are saying is give peas a chance.
This message provided by the Pea Farmers' Council.
Carrot baggers of the world unite!!
"Like George W. Bush said, "If you aren't with us, you are with the terrorists." These people are clearly not with us. "
Wait, you are saying these people are supporting and harboring terrorists? Since, as you well know, that's actually what Bush said.
I've always thought that the building at the top of State that holds Myles Teddywedgers is very attractive. So thanks for showing all the pictures of it.

WI should be so lucky. If Walker were to do that the average IQ in Madison would rise above room temperature and 'entitlement' spending would nearly disappear. Good idea RV. Never knew you had it in you.

TEA Party protestors bath, are neat and orderly, get permits, work and pay taxes and are simply demanding that the scum portrayed in the photos stop picking their pockets and support themselves. Only a loon would find the false mirror equivalence.
"Hope is in the street not the White House"
Wow, a protest sign in Madison I agree with.
A better name for the march: Unattractive People With Grievances.
What Michael Haz said. Why is it that these protests are always populated by people who look like you'd never want to know them? Go occupy a shower, then occupy an armchair with a nice book.
Right now, a nice moscato is occupying me.
There was a time when people were ashamed to have these attitudes. Now they carry signs proclaiming their weakness, foolishness and laziness. It truly is Idiocracy in our time. No long evolutionary mechanism was needed. Universities accomplished it in a single generation. Idiots aren't born, they are made... and at considerable profit.
"do these loony birds have a common theme?"
A: queers/druggies.
"It truly is Idiocracy in our time."
Not universally.
"Right now, a nice moscato is occupying me."
Cool. Same here, along with a rack of ribs and some home made salsa.
Yesterday we had a big party at my company. We welded up a huge barbecue out of steel plate we had laying around. We cooked tons of carne asada, and baby back ribs with all the usual fixins. We put tables and chairs out on the sidewalk and grass in front of our building, turned up some music, and 70 of us partied all afternoon in perfect 75 deg. weather.
We were protesting lazy, parasitic, whiny mindsets, by celebrating our fantastic success year to date accomplished through simple hard work and giving our fellow citizens what they want to buy so that they would send us checks for it. It's working very well, and it's working better than these people's method of simply asking for the checks between bong hits.
We party too, but we work first to pay for it. A novel concept.
“Hope is in the street not the White House.”
The more hope is part of your plan, the less plan you have.
”Who lied? Who died?”
Eventually everyone.
“Who pays? Who profits?"
If you don’t profit, where do you get the money to pay?
”Birds not bombs."
Why must we only choose one?
"Corporations get handouts/We get shut out."
We have the highest corporate taxes in the world. Where does all that tax money go?
”Occupy the World."
Done.
What kind of pervert walks around with a sign saying: "Still waiting to get trickled down on."?
Can't you advertise for that on Craig's List or something?
The source of that Einstein quote appears to be a book by Israel's former ambassador to the UN, Gad Yaacobi.
What a truckload of naivete!
Fools and fellow travelers all. The real world would gladly mug them and take their lunch money.
Glad to see the anti-war crowd, lately hypocrites, FINALLY getting back to work, even if they had to cobble together a strange coalition of misfits to do it. And a couple protesters with the temerity to point out that they are now Obama's wars! Wow, that IS progress.
Not that I expect anyone in that crowd to break their lifelong allegiance to the Leftist Party, but would a front-running Republican with a real end-the-wars plank at least cause them some doubt?
Corporations get handouts/We get shut out."
Actually, you get to have no federal income tax liability, clown.
Tyrone: And in other news from 1967, Elvis and Priscilla are married in Las Vegas!
So who's more clueless, the confused nostalgics who pull on their Che shirts when some march, any march goes by, or the meta-nostalgics who get distracted by their every move?
A: "You know, I don't think there's any getting around this economic mess until the TBTFs are allowed to FOAD, according to sound capitalist principle, as they would if our system weren't lousy with with crony 'capitalist' corruption. What do you think?"
B: "Well, I, um...hey, there's a dirty old hippie in a 'Free Mumia' t-shirt! Ooh shiiiiiny!"

Things are looking up. I notice you are not sneering, Ann.
