Christian groups had been championing the southern Sudanese since the 19th century. And their efforts paid off in 2000 when George W. Bush was elected president of the United States. He elevated Sudan to the top of his foreign policy agenda, and in 2005, the American government pushed the southern rebels and the central government — both war weary and locked in a military stalemate — to sign a comprehensive peace agreement that guaranteed the southerners the right to secede.

"On Saturday, one man held up a sign that said 'Thank You George Bush.'"
Today, there is a new country in the world: South Sudan.

Boy is Obama pissed. Muslims never lose territory.
Stupid W. He doesn't care about black people.
There are about 2 million Episcopalians in the Southern Sudan. But the place called the Darfur is still under the control of the bad Muslim group. Too bad. Still, another great and important accomplishment for W.
Jesus saves, while Mohammed attempts to conquer.
One more element of that insidious, "Miss Me Yet?", campaign by the Bushies.
PS And how hard has Little Zero worked to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa?
The One hasn't done much to prevent the spread of AIDS but has done much to help the spread of Islam. Which, when you think about it, is a way of fighting the spread of AIDS. Damn he's smart.

Islam's spread in Africa ended at least a century ago. More recently, it's been losing ground to Christianity in parts of West Africa.

One turned up Nov 10, 2008.
Excellent book and movie about Sudan: "God Grew Tired of Us."
As a highly non-religious person, I'd like to point out that all religions are not morally equal, and this is a perfect example of that. One of my pet peeves with a lot of atheists is how they attack all religion like it's the same. Some are nearly polar opposites sharing only a belief in a god.

I was speaking of Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan and who knows where it will stop. Though true, not all of those countries are in Africa.
More successful nation-building from the greatest president of the 21st century. Thank you George Bush!

bago....and I am guilty from the right of attacking leftist Christians. I suppose a pacifist Quaker or lefty legacy Protestant often really do have good intentions.
So it does matter whether the USA's President is a believer in Jesus, like W is, or whether he is a Kenyan Nationalist dedicated to removing all that came from the Episcopal Church's heritage in the British Empire's old Colonies.
Big fucking deal.
20 years from now when the historians reflect on Bush's presidency, I wonder if they'll mention Sudan.
I got chills reading the article.
A while back one of the horrible women who carry GOP water on talk shows went on and on about the "spring" in the middle east was all GWB's doing and how marvelous it was. She was an idiot. This thank you note is idiotic. This blog is idiotic for noting it.
HD...Where have you been?
Without you, we have had no one to tell us that we are wrong about everything.
Nice to see you again.
Jesus saves, while Mohammed attempts to conquer.
"Jesus saves, Satan invests."
Yet, Obama still takes the credit for the birth of a nation.
Go fuck yourself, Hdhouse - you are an idiotic fucking moron. You are so fucking stupid you forgot to mention that you were just passing through. Did I mention you should go fuck yourself? Not frequently enough, I guess. You are still a lying, tax-dodging, Klan-loving, disingenuous, mega-douche who is too fucking stupid to live. Now go fuck yourself. Do it today.
George Bush did so much good for Africa. God bless that man and the whole brand-new country of South Sudan.
It is a big deal.
George W. Bush:
Raaaaaacist!
Must give Queen Michelle some pause to hear Africans say for all Bush's other faults, he was more attentive to Africa than the Obamas - despite Africans treating the Obamas as if they were rock stars based on skin color.
A slight pause for Michelle...then back to diving on that pile of tasty fat cakes.
As for Bush, it is nice - after you could fill all the gratitude the Islamoids gave him for a trillion nation building and his Religion of Peace gibberish, Jewish votes given him for his knee jerk support of whatever Israel wanted, and Euros for his policies ....into a japanese-sized condom.
Is Carol Herman in her cups a little early today?
This is a truly glorious day in the history of mankind. I have relatives in Sudan this very day who have tried to help the hurting and dying of Sudan's last 5 years.
Blake wins the thread.
Another day of Democrats/progressives caught with their pants around their ankles! Even when you put their own stupidity and utter moral bankruptcy right in front of their faces, it is impossible for them to see it, much less admit their extreme folly, blind hatred, and basic governing incompetence.
"W" wins again! I said it a dozen times here in his last year as President and I will educate Democrats/progressives again: George W Bush will continue to grow in greatness as time goes on.
Carol Herman - you are disgusting in your comment. Thought you were sometimes insightful, now we see you're just basically hateful. Absorb this Ann Althouse quote from an earlier Althouse post this morning:
Maybe what just happened near you is not actually the most dramatic thing that ever happened. Your feelings are one thing. Reality is something else. Make an effort to discern the difference.
HD - you are often a brilliant counterpoint to many issues here. On this issue, your take is deeply wrong.
Cedarford - You are a hate-filled anti-Semitic animal - the kind of person that is only 3/5 of a human being. Have a cocktail with Carol tonight, would you?
Funny - a truly African-American President has done far, far less for Africa than the White President hated by most African-"Americans".
Big fucking deal.
The successful resistance to the spread of horrible totalitarian murderous Islam anywhere at anytime is a very big deal you worthless blowhard.
Obama was doing Afghanistan, bin Ladin, Pakistan, straightening up the mess that Dubya made in Sudan ... er, um. Hmmm.
Those danged Christians in South Sudan wouldn't let Obama undo the excellent work Dubya did to help them.
Kirby, the people of Darfur can convert to Christianity and ask to become South Sudanese.
Luther, homosexuality is rampant in the Islamic world. Birds fly with one wing in Kandahar, and boys choose their girlfriends from the freshmen entering boys' school.

Yup.
Miss the man.
May the people of South Sudan be able to find their way to peace and prosperity.
I like the pic in Time of the new prez with the cowboy hate the W gave him.
I wish them the best.
Gulp.
"Luther, homosexuality is rampant in the Islamic world."
Of course it is when you allow, nay preach, polygamous marriage. It's the only game in town for many. Therefore, though hidden, accepted. Besides, there is likely more excitement from a ten year old boy than a declitorized woman.
Though then, I guess, that the calls from the mullahs that homosexuals be killed is just theater, well, other than the pictures of the hanged bodies that managed to make it out of Iran and SA.
"Those countries have been Islamic for centuries."
Yes, you are right. And with their barbaric tendencies held in check, which is why many don't think of them as particularly Islamic. Now watch.
Another Bush accomplishment that Obama takes the credit for: www.cnsnews.com/news/article/obama-administration-takes-credit-birth
Stories like this one make me very happy. I hope they make a go of it. Love the hat!
Primatives love George Bush
From about 2001-2007 I worked with quite a few people in DC on the issue of Southern Sudan, and helped with quite a bit of advocacy in churches as well on the issue (there are indeed quite a few Episcopalians in Southern Sudan). The Bush administration was light-years ahead of the Clintons in trying to find a solution that protected the Christians and animists in the South. Talk to any Southern Sudanese activists about Bush and you'll hear the same thing: endless praise and admiration for what he did. If it hadn't been for his dedication to seeing through the 2005 agreement, none of this would be happening right now.
