"Norway suffered two shocking attacks on Friday..."

"... when powerful explosions shook the government center in the capital and, shortly after, a gunman stalked youths on an island summer camp for children of members of the governing Labor Party. Police were treating the assaults, which together killed at least 16 people, as connected, according to Norweigian news media, though it remained unclear who was behind them."

The police put what happened on Utøya in connection with the explosion in the government building earlier in the afternoon. At a press conference late Friday night, police said that there is a 32-year-old who has been arrested and is now questioned.

Police believe it may be the same person is behind both incidents. This is based on the description of a man dressed in police uniform were seen moving away from the scene in Oslo.

It was an hour after the explosion that shooting on Utøya started. Thus, police work on the basis that it may be the same person who has turned to both.

- There is reason to see a correlation between the two events today, says Anders Frydenberg, prosecutor at the Oslo police to NRK.no.

It's unreal. I have buddies and friends who are there. And if he had wanted, he could just choked down us there and then, says Sondre Selstad Amundsen (19) to NRK.

He is one of about 700 AUF young people in recent days has been on Utøya of Labour Youth League summer camp. Friday afternoon he took the boat from the island to the mainland to catch the bus on way home.

Shortly after he came ashore a little before at 16 Friday afternoon, he met there was apparently a policeman. The two greeted shortly before the uniformed man walked on the boat and for insects.

A large number of youths fleeing desperately from Utøya-when an offender began to fire at the youngsters.

- Spoken eastern dialect
Less than half an hour later, while Selstad Amundsen still waiting for the bus, he heard the shots from Utøya.

In retrospect, he understood that after all solar terms(

(ya-I know-should be-of all the things in the world or something...)

is the man he greeted minutes earlier who shot and killed several children.

I don't know if I would consider this "trite", but I'm sure this guy got on some blogs (he did get quoted in newspaper):

Mads Gilbert:

Mads Fredrik Gilbert (born June 2, 1947, Porsgrunn) is a Norwegian doctor, solidarity worker and a member of the socialist party Red. He received his PhD at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He is a specialist in anesthesiology and a leader of the emergency medicine department of University Hospital of North Norway, and has been a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Tromsø since 1995.

A statement made to Dagbladet in the wake of the September 11 attacks was met with strong reactions. His statement to Dagbladet was: "The attack on New York did not come as a surprise with the politics the West has followed the last decades. I am upset by the terrorist attack, but I am at least as upset over the suffering that the US has caused. It is in this context that 5000 dead has to be seen. If the U.S. government has a legitimate right to bomb and kill civilians in Iraq, the oppressed has a moral right to attack the U.S. with the weapons they may create as well. Dead civilians are the same whether they are Americans, Palestinians or Iraqis." When asked if he supported a terrorist attack against the US he answered: "Terror is a poor weapon, but my answer is yes, within the context I have mentioned."

Not the last place I would expect. In fact what surprises me is that it's taken this long to metastasize into real violence. Norway has been storing up trouble for a decades now with an immigration and asylum policy that is the worst in Europe after Sweden's. Stroll around Oslo and you'll see about as many veiled women and glowering bearded men as you might see in Karachi -- nah, that's an exaggeration, but Norway as the epicenter of Nordic culture is dead. The real growth is in the Muslim-dominated neighborhoods, while the birthrate for Nordics dropped below replacement levels back in the 90's. By mid-century Norway will be a majority Muslim country, thanks largely to the Labour-Green coalition government that has ruled Norway since the Reagan-era Pershing missile imbroglio which got leftist governments embedded like ticks in the skin of several bodies politic.

Ironic that it was a Labour youth camp (Imagine that! A kids camp rum by and for a political party. I thought that kind of thing died out along with the Nazis) which was attacked today.

That said, I hope that their memory will lead to a reaction to clean out the rat's nest that has grown in all the Scandinavian countries with unchecked immigration and political correctness refusing to see a problem growing in their midst.

The group that claimed responsibility had a real grievance against the Norway government too:

OSLO, Norway (AP) — A Norwegian prosecutor has filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he's deported from the Nordic country.

The indictment, obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, centers on statements that Mullah Krekar — the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam — made to various media, including American network NBC.

What a shame.

Is it trite to make bad jokes about rampaging Lutherans?

I read the linked article (and one article linked from it) and what I learned was that Norwegians were arrested, now and then. Is it trite to make bad jokes about rampaging Lutherans when the news is uninterested in actually reporting who did it?

I am Norwegian but I'm not a Norwegian citizen. The culprits are, at least, supposedly Norwegian citizens (and the other article about previous arrests made the same PC choices) and the reader is left to guess if they belong to some other ethnicity or not.

Our media is hell bent on concealing information from us. When the Danish Cartoon *thing* was happening the professional media refused to show or discuss or reveal the actual cartoons so that people could be informed.

Obviously the importance and reality of events in Norway are completely different if the culprits are a homegrown Aryan group or an immigrant Muslim group or crazy commies or radical anarchists or converted and radicalized ethnic Norwegian Muslims.

Any of those things means something different for the culture and for History itself, for possible solutions and for any effort to understand events. And the default has become to actively conceal and obfuscate the truth.

In light of that, bad jokes about rampaging Lutherans are appropriate.

And how the *hell* does someone expend that much ammunition before they are stopped? And lastly... arrested? They effing *arrested* him? Did they just wait until he was DONE!

MnMark said...

Assuming this was done by a Norwegian with strong nationalist feelings, I don't understand what this guy thought he was going to accomplish for his cause. This does nothing but provide fodder for demonizing people who want to see Norway remain Norwegian. There is no act I can think of that is more completely destructive of his presumed goals than this.

I take two lessons from this.

First, when you undertake a project to remake your society by allowing the immigration of a culture with a long tradition of antagonism towards your own, you get terrorism from both a fraction of the immigrants and from a fraction of your native people who resent what you are doing.

Second, if terrorists are going to increasingly use guns (as in Mumbai and here) then a lot more people better be getting concealed carry permits. There apparently wasn't anyone armed on that island but the murderer and he could take his time without fear of armed opposition.

It certainly isn't an arguemt for more gun control. Is there a country in the Western hemisphere with more gun control laws than Norway? And yet a native Norwegian was able to get the guns to do this. Give up once and for all on the idea that you can control guns, and start training and arming law-abiding people to balance things out.
